More Americans want US to encourage Israel to cease military operation in Gaza: Poll

Gaza War

A new CBS News/YouGov poll found that 37 percent of surveyed Americans want Biden to encourage Israel to stop its military actions in Gaza — slightly up from the 31 percent who said the same in February. Another 23 percent said in the new poll that Biden should encourage Israel to decrease its military actions in Gaza.

Biden has amped up his criticism of Netanyahu in recent weeks as Israel continues its war against the Gaza Strip. Biden stated last week that Netanyahu’s approach to the war “is a mistake”.

The poll found that just 12 percent of those surveyed said Biden should urge Israel to increase its military actions in Gaza. Another 28 percent said that Biden should tell Israel to keep its military actions the same, which is down from the 32 percent who said so in February.

Overall, 33 percent of respondents said they approved of Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war, which is the lowest percentage CBS News polling has recorded since the onset of the war. That figure is down from the 38 percent who approved of Biden’s handling in February and from the 44 percent who approved in October.

The poll, conducted before Iran’s drone and missile attack on Israel, also found that most surveyed Americans did not want the US to take military action against Iran if it attacked Israel.

Twenty-five percent of those surveyed said the US should take military action, 42 percent said the US should support Israel’s actions but not get involved militarily and 32 percent said the US should not get involved at all.

Zelensky says Ukraine struggling in Donbass, blames west

Volodymyr Zelensky

He echoed an earlier statement by the army’s commander-in-chief, Aleksandr Syrsky, who warned of a significant escalation in recent days, with Russian forces attacking Ukrainian positions near the cities of Lyman and Artyomovsk (known as Bakhmut by Ukraine) and advancing towards Chasov Yar.

“The situation on the front during a hot war is always difficult. But these days – and especially in the Donetsk areas – it’s getting harder,” Zelensky said in an address to the nation on Sunday.

He drew a comparison with Iran’s missile and drone attack on Israel on Saturday.

“Modern air power proves its effectiveness, modern air defense systems are capable of protecting lives – this was demonstrated in the Middle East,” Zelensky said, adding that the West is turning a deaf ear to Ukraine’s pleas for more funding.

“The whole world sees what real defense is. It seems that it is feasible,” he stressed, while criticizing the US Congress for holding up a proposed aid package that has been in limbo for months.

Since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, Western backers have provided Kiev with billions of dollars in aid, with Washington alone giving over $113 billion. The White House has failed, however, to gain congressional approval for an extra $60 billion in military assistance, with Republicans in the House of Representatives insisting on stronger measures to curb illegal immigration on the southern US border.

Moscow has maintained that no amount of Western funding will change the course of its military operation.

Israel says not seeking war after Iran’s attack

Isaac Herzog

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is speaking with many world leaders and there is “intimate dialogue with allies” in response to Iran’s actions, he said.

“We’re considering it all. We’re acting cool-headedly and lucidly,” Herzog stated.

“I think we’re operating in a very focused way and very responsible way and I’m sure there will be a decision accordingly that will make sure that we protect and defend the people of Israel,” the president added.

“This was a very aggressive and brutal attack, which looks like a declaration of war. But I also added immediately to say that we are not seeking war. We are seeking always peace.”

Tehran launched extensive missile and drone strikes against the occupied territories in response to Israel’s deadly attack on the Iranian diplomatic premises in Syria early this month.

Iranian officials have stressed their country’s military operation against Israel was “in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defence”, stressing Tehran is not seeking to escalate conflict in the region.

Members of the Israeli war Cabinet have vowed retaliation against Iran for the missile and drone launches, despite urging from the Joe Biden administration.

John Kirby, White House national security communications adviser, has stressed the Biden administration is “not looking” for a wider war with Iran.

Asked Sunday on NBC News’s “Meet The Press”, if the Middle East tensions have escalated into a wider war, Kirby said, “The president doesn’t believe that it needs to move in that direction whatsoever”.

“And also, Israel demonstrated again, as I said, that they’re not standing alone, that they have friends,” Kirby added.

“So the president’s been clear. We don’t want to see this escalate. We’re not looking for a wider war with Iran. I think, you know, the coming hours and days will tell us a lot.”

Iran’s envoy warns Washington against initiating military action against Tehran

Amir Saeed Iravani

“Iran has no intention of engaging in conflict with the US in the region,” Iravani told a UN Security Council meeting on Sunday.

“However, if the US initiates military operations against Iran, its citizens, or its security and interests, Iran will use its inherent right to respond proportionately,” he added.

On April 1, the Israeli regime committed a terrorist attack against Iran’s diplomatic premises in the Syrian capital Damascus.

The Israeli attack resulted in the martyrdom of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), his deputy, General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and five of their accompanying officers.

Retaliating against the attack, the IRGC targeted the occupied territories late on Saturday with a barrage of drones and missiles. The retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation True Promise, has inflicted damage on Israeli military bases across the occupied territories, but the extent of which is yet to be specified.

Following the reprisal, Iran both relayed the message that it viewed the matter as “concluded”, and also warned the US against trying to involve itself in the conflict.

Shortly after the retaliation, Iran’s permanent mission to the UN issued a statement, saying the conflict was one between the Islamic Republic and the rogue regime, “of which the United States should stay away.”

Iravani added, “We demonstrated our commitment to peace by exercising our restraint about involving the US Army in intercepting Iranian drones and missiles bound for military targets in the occupied Palestinian territories.”

“This underscores our dedication to de-escalating tensions and avoiding the expansion of conflict.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, the envoy lambasted the US and the UK for their protecting the Israeli regime against accountability.

“The US and the UK are fully responsible for all its (Israel’s) decades-long aggressions and other crimes and unlawful measures in our region,” he stated.

“Furthermore, they are responsible for all crimes of the Israeli regime, as it cannot commit any of such savage crimes in Gaza without the consent, order, and all-out political, financial, and military support of, and collaboration with, the United States and the UK.”

The envoy was referring to the regime’s October 7-present war against the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 33,700 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

Iravani cautioned that “the absence of accountability and the [Security] Council’s inaction in the face of the Israeli genocide and war crimes against the Palestinian people has only emboldened this regime to continue its violations unchecked.”

Iranian daily warns of ‘moles’ following Israel’s targeting of top commander in Damascus

Israeli strike on Iranian consulate in Syria

In an article on Monday, Jomhuri-e Eslami sought to turn heads to the hitherto -less-discussed issue of ‘infiltrators’ who enabled the Israeli regime to target the senior commanders in the Iranian Embassy’s consular building in Damascus on April 1.

Israel, largely believed to have acted on a tip-off, launched a missile and drone attack on the Iranian diplomatic site that led to the death of seven military advisors, including General Mohammad Reza Zahedi.

The aggression provoked an extensive Iranian response on Israel’s military bases and intelligence centers.

“We resolutely responded the Zionists with hundreds of missiles and drones for crossing our red lines,” the Iranian newspaper wrote, adding, “Whether this story ends or God forbid continues with their madness, we must raise the walls of our house and fortify it.”

Jomhuri-e Eslami believes that the first step is to seal the “infiltration points,” explaining “Infiltrators should be sought among insiders; in the closest circle of friends, those who hear the words and are familiar with the codes and symbols.”

The daily had thinly-veiled words for Russia for being ‘unreliable’ in tough conditions.

“There are countless spies in Syria and Lebanon. We shouldn’t make friends with anyone (there). We shouldn’t bet on the owners of S300 and S400 (missile systems) who fall asleep when the enemy attacks us either. Let’s stand on our own two feet,” it concluded.

Israel decides to postpone military offensive in Rafah after Iran attack

Gaza War

Israel has waged a military offensive on the Gaza Strip since an Oct. 7, 2023 cross-border attack led by Hamas, in which nearly 1,200 people were killed.

More than 33,700 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have since been killed in Gaza, besides mass destruction and conditions of famine.

Claiming it to be “the last stronghold of Hamas”, Netanyahu has insisted on invading Rafah, where around 1.4 million displaced Palestinians have taken refuge from the incessant attacks.

Despite growing international outcry over the invasion plan, the prime minister last week said a date had been set for the offensive.

“Today I received a detailed report on the talks in Cairo, we are constantly working to achieve our goals, first and foremost the release of all our hostages and achieving a complete victory over Hamas,” Netanyahu stated.

“This victory requires entry into Rafah and the elimination of the terrorist battalions there. It will happen – there is a date.”

According to the public broadcaster, the postponement of the ground operation came after consultations with the Israeli security apparatus.

Earlier on Sunday, Finance Minister Avigdor Smotrich called for invading Rafah and imposing control over the entire Gaza Strip.

The postponement comes after Iran launched around 300 missiles and drones towards Israel late Saturday evening.

The unprecedented attack was in response to an April 1 missile attack targeting the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, which killed several of Iranian military commanders.

G7 leaders say Iran strike on Israel risks ‘uncontrollable regional escalation’

“With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilization of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation. This must be avoided. We will continue to work to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation. In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives,” the G7 leaders said in a statement on Sunday.

Iranian officials have stressed their country’s military operation against Israel was ‘in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defence’, stressing Tehran is not seeking to escalate conflict in the region.

The G7 leaders condemned the “direct and unprecedented attack” launched by Iran in their statement and emphasized their “full solidarity and support to Israel”.

The leaders also noted that they will continue to work to end the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

“We will also strengthen our cooperation to end the crisis in Gaza, including by continuing to work towards an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas, and deliver increased humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need,” they added.

Iran FM: Military action against Israeli regime did NOT target civilian areas

Hossein Amirabdollahian

He emphasized the precision of Iranian armed forces’ strikes, specifically targeting a military base housing F-35 planes belonging to the occupying Israeli regime, which were used in an attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

Amirabdollahian clarified that these strikes were solely aimed at military targets, affirming Iran’s commitment to legitimate defense without civilian casualties.

Amirabdollahian said Tehran has conveyed Iran’s intention for a limited and minimal operation aimed at defending its diplomatic missions and punishing Israel within the bounds of international law.

He criticized the disparity in international responses, questioning why restraint was recommended to Iran while the Zionist regime’s aggressions have thus far gone unchecked.

Furthermore, Amirabdollahian condemned the opposition of the United States, England, and France to issuing a UN Security Council statement condemning the Israeli regime’s deadly attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria, which resulted in the killing of seven high ranking Iranian military advisors.

He highlighted this as a violation of international regulations and the Vienna Conventions, urging adherence to diplomatic immunity granted by the UN Security Council.

Israel conducted 16 massacres daily since start of Gaza war: Report

Gaza War

The Gaza government’s Media Office issued a statement detailing the 190-day-long bombardment carried out by Israel on the besieged enclave.

The statement reported that the Israeli army has committed “2,973 massacres in the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023”.

The report stated that during the Israeli military’s assaults on the Gaza Strip, 14,560 children and 9,582 women were killed.

Additionally, 7,000 individuals are either trapped under the rubble or missing, with hospitals receiving a total of 33,700 fatalities and 76,300 individuals sustaining injuries.

It was reported that 72% of those exposed to Israeli attacks in Gaza are women and children.

It was highlighted that in Gaza, where Israel’s actions have led to starvation, a humanitarian crisis has emerged due to the blockade of aid.

As a result, 30 children have tragically died due to malnutrition and dehydration.

It was also stated that the Israeli military has launched over 70,000 tons of explosives on Gaza since Oct. 7, targeting not only civilian areas but also the healthcare sector.

This relentless assault has resulted in the deaths of 485 healthcare workers and 66 civil defense personnel in Gaza.

Also, Israeli attacks have resulted in 140 journalists dead and 17,000 children in Gaza living without one or both parents.

There are still 11,000 injured people who need urgent treatment abroad, and 10,000 cancer patients are facing the danger of death due to inadequate health services.

Overcrowded shelters housing displaced Palestinians have been overcrowded with 1,089,000 cases of infectious diseases and over 8,000 cases of “Hepatitis A”.

Over 60,000 pregnant women in Gaza cannot receive health care, and 350,000 people with chronic illnesses are at risk of death due to lack of medication, according to the report.

It added that the Israeli army has detained more than 5,000 Palestinians since its initial attacks on Gaza.

Also, Israeli soldiers detained 310 healthcare workers and 20 journalists, and 2 million people have been displaced in the Gaza Strip with a population of 2.3 million.

Over 70,000 houses were completely destroyed, and a total of 290,000 houses were damaged and uninhabitable, according to the media office.

The Israeli army destroyed 171 government facilities and 100 schools and universities, and 305 schools and universities were partially damaged.

The Israeli military also destroyed 233 mosques completely, damaged 301 mosques, and targeted and destroyed three churches.

It was also stated that Israel targeted 159 healthcare institutions in Gaza, rendered 53 healthcare centers and 32 hospitals inoperative, and made 126 ambulances unusable.

Israel also targeted Palestine’s cultural heritage, destroying 203 historical and cultural assets in Gaza, according to the report.
