Leaked US intelligence files show Israel plans to attack Iran: Report

Pentagon

The apparent security breach occurred amid an intense standoff between Iran and Israel – which has vowed to respond to a barrage of missiles fired by Tehran earlier this month.

On Friday, two documents were posted to the anonymous Telegram channel Middle East Spectator, which covers events in the region and is critical of Israel.

The first of the files, apparently prepared by the Pentagon’s National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, says the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) “continued key munitions preparations and covert UAV activity on October 16 almost certainly for a strike on Iran”.

The second document contains a detailed report about a “large-force employment exercise” conducted by the Israeli Air Force on October 15-16.

An unnamed US official confirmed the authenticity of the documents to CNN, describing the leak as “deeply concerning”. The official told the network that the ongoing probe is aimed at determining who had access to the top secret files that eventually made their way to social media.

The Telegram channel which published the documents released a statement on Saturday, claiming that it had received the files from “an anonymous source on Telegram who refused to identify himself”. The channel further claimed that it had “no connection to the original leaker”.

On October 1, Iran fired nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel in response to the war in Gaza and the assassinations of top members of pro-Palestinian groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

Israel did not specify how and when it would retaliate, with some reports saying that the IDF was planning to strike military targets in Iran, rather than nuclear or oil facilities. Israel would make “final decisions based on our national interest”, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on Thursday.

Anti-government Israeli protesters demand a deal to release Gaza-held hostages

In Tel Aviv, people protested outside the Israel Defense Forces’ headquarters, blocking traffic and chanting anti-government slogans.

Eran Nissan, a peace activist from the progressive Israeli group Mehazkim, has been attending anti-government rallies since January last year. On Saturday, he was handing out T-shirts and stickers with derogatory messages about Israel’s far-right security minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

Nissan said a ceasefire-for-hostages deal was the central demand of the protests.

“The issue of hostages is the first, the second and the third priority,” he told CNN, adding that he believed the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on Wednesday presented an opportunity to finally agree to an agreement.

“There’s a solid majority and consensus in the Israeli society on this, 105 hostages have (already) been brought back in a deal,” he continued, in a reference to the weeklong ceasefire and hostage exchange that took place last November.

There are 101 hostages still held in Gaza, Israeli authorities say, but as many as one-third of them are thought to be dead.

He stated that he believed the current government had an interest in prolonging the war.

“They know that once the war is over, they will have to answer questions about how they were complicit in bringing Israel to the October 7 (terror attack), and that there is going to be a national inquiry, and that there is going to be a demand for elections. And any poll that you see right now shows they’re going to be hit hard,” he stressed.

The large-scale protests Saturday were among the first since the government banned large gatherings citing security concerns following the October 1 Iranian ballistic missile attack.

Iran, Turkey share stance on need to cease Israel’s crimes: FM

Araghchi made the remark in a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the third meeting of the 3+3 regional cooperation platform in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Friday, according to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued on Saturday.

He said as two big and influential neighbors in the region and the Muslim world, Iran and Turkey share a stance on the serious threat that the Israeli regime’s acts of aggression and crimes pose to regional security and stability.

“They emphasize the need for an urgent international action to end the killing of innocents, curb [Israel’s] warmongering and stop the regime’s genocide in Gaza and Lebanon,” the top Iranian diplomat added.

He also stressed the importance of improving coordination among the influential countries in the region, particularly Iran and Turkey, to make decisions and implement urgent measures to stop the Israeli regime’s war machine.

Since early October 2023, Israel has been waging brutal two-front aggression that has killed at least 42,519 people in the Gaza Strip and 2,412 others in Lebanon so far.

Erdogan, for his part, stressed it is imperative for Iran and Turkey as two important countries in the region to boost close cooperation in order to halt Israel’s genocide and crimes.

At the head of a delegation, Araghchi arrived in Istanbul as the next leg of his regional tour and also attended the 3+3 mechanism meeting. Before arriving in Istanbul, Araghchi had traveled to Jordan and Egypt for consultations with senior officials regarding the latest regional developments, particularly the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Araghchi’s regional tour, aimed at stopping the Israeli regime’s crimes in Lebanon and Gaza, also took him to Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Oman.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, the Iranian foreign minister warned about the potential for a widening conflict in West Asia.

He characterized the situation in the strategic region as a “powder keg” in light of Israel’s escalating actions in the besieged Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.

the Iranian foreign minister warned of the possibility of an ever-expanding war in West Asia, describing as a “powder keg” the situation in the strategic region following Israel’s escalation in the besieged Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.

Israeli strike on northern Gaza kills dozens of Palestinians

Israeli air raids targeted a multi-floor building and damaged a number of nearby houses, medics in the Gaza Strip reported.

The government media office said that Israeli forces had bombed overcrowded residential areas in Beit Lahiya, adding that women and children were amongst the casualties.

“This is a war of genocide and ethnic cleansing. The occupation has conducted a horrifying massacre in Beit Lahiya,” the media office added.

The attack shook the entire western part of the town, and buildings collapsed while people were inside. Residents were given no warnings to leave their homes.

Many people were left trapped under the rubble, with paramedics and civil defence crews unable to immediately reach the area due to the intensity of Israeli bombardment.

Hossam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, said that many of those wounded in the attack had died due to a severe lack of resources, medical supplies and specialised personnel at the facility.

He added dozens were missing under the rubble, and could not be rescued “due to the lack of resources and ongoing strikes”.

Earlier on Saturday, Israeli forces surrounded and shelled the Indonesian Hospital, which is also located in Beit Lahia.

Israeli forces targeted the upper floors, where over 40 patients and medical staff had been present, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Marwan Sultan, director of the Indonesian Hospital, stated: “Israeli tanks have completely surrounded the hospital, cut off electricity and shelled the hospital, targeting the second and third floors with artillery.”

Saturday’s attack come as Israel’s total siege on Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza entered its 15th day. No food or clean water has arrived in the camp during that time.

1 killed, several wounded in fresh barrages fired at Israel from Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said a total of 150 launches from southern Lebanon on Saturday had been detected.

One person was killed in Acre, northern Israel. Paramedics announced that the 50-year-old man was hit by shrapnel while sitting in his car.

Another person injured by shrapnel at the same location was evacuated in moderate condition to the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya.

Cross-border attacks have intensified in recent weeks but Israeli fatalities are rare.

A barrage aimed at the city of Haifa damaged a home in Kiryat Ata, according to emergency services.

Ten people in the area had been taken to hospital. Three people suffered shrapnel injuries, while others were suffering from shock.

Following damage to an open road in the Western Galilee, four people were referred to the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, including a man who was in moderate condition with shrapnel injuries.

While cross-border warfare between Israel and Hezbollah continued since the Gaza war last October, Tel Aviv escalated its offensive in Lebanon late last month, killing Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah and many other commanders.

The extensive airstrikes, followed by a ground invasion, have claimed more than 1,500 lives and displaced around 1.3 million people.

Iran FM: Israel’s warmongering turned region into powder keg

At a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Istanbul on Saturday, Araqchi emphasized that the current critical situation in the region is entirely the result of the Zionist regime’s actions. He stressed that Iran is prepared for any possible scenario.

Araqchi blamed the Israeli regime as the main source of global insecurity, pointing out that international mechanisms have been ineffective in stopping its actions.

He also highlighted how US support has emboldened Israeli leaders to commit further crimes in Gaza and Lebanon.

Referring to the Israeli regime’s crimes in Gaza over the past year, Araqchi mentioned the killing of nearly 43,000 Palestinians. Despite the complete destruction of Gaza and the genocide against Palestinians, he said, Hamas remains steadfast and will continue its resistance, asserting that Hamas cannot be eliminated.

He underscored the urgency of stopping the Zionist regime’s crimes in Gaza and Lebanon, calling on all Muslim nations to use their full capacities to that end.

Araqchi also spoke about his meetings with the Turkish president and foreign minister, noting that both countries could play a key role in restoring peace and stability in the region.

The Iranian foreign minister added that discussions with Turkish officials covered topics such as the joint fight against terrorism, securing border areas, environmental challenges, strengthening cooperation in the energy sector, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, in turn, emphasized the need for peace and stability in the region, urging Israel to end its threats against neighboring countries.

He called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, stating, “We do not seek war; we call for restraint.”

Fidan also warned that the Israeli prime minister is attempting to provoke a conflict with Iran by threatening to target Iran’s nuclear sites.

Iran’s Guardian Council spokesperson dismisses disqualification claims against President Pezeshkian

Masoud Pezeshkian

Nazif emphasized that Pezeshkian has registered for parliamentary elections five times and has been approved each time, adding that he was also qualified in the recent presidential election and “is now the president of all of us.”

The remarks come as the principlists seem to have started a push to remove President Pezeshkian and have threatened to push charges against him over the appointment of Former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as his deputy for strategic affairs.

Kamran Ghazanfari, a member of the Iranian Parliament and the Perseverance Front, accused President Pezeshkian of committing a crime by appointing Zarif, who has two children with American citizenship, as his strategic deputy.

Ghazanfari stated that several warnings were issued by the parliament members, deeming the appointment illegal.

Zarif had earlier tweeted that he intended to resign from his position and return to academia, which Ghazanfari claimed was a public deception.

He warned that if the appointment is not revoked, legal action will be taken, potentially leading to Pezeshkian’s removal from the presidency and a sentence of 5 to 15 years of social rights deprivation.

Hamid Rasaee, another lawmaker from the Perseverance Front, also posted a message on X social media platform, claiming that in a meeting between Pezeshkian and Tehran representatives at the parliament, the president had clarified that keeping Zarif within the administration prevents him from becoming an opposition figure.

Drone hits Netanyahu’s residence in Caesarea

Lebanese drones targeted the residence of Netanyahu on Saturday, though no casualties were reported.

The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Netanyahu’s private residence in Caesarea was the target but said that neither he nor his wife were home at the time.

Two additional drones fired from Lebanon were intercepted by the Israeli military.

“A UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] was launched towards the prime minister’s residence in Caesarea,” Netanyahu’s office announced in a statement.

“The prime minister and his wife were not at the location and there were no injuries in the incident,” it added.

In an earlier statement, Israel‘s military announced a drone launched from Lebanon “hit a structure in the area of Caesarea”.

In a statement issued on Friday, Hezbollah announced the start of a new phase in its retaliatory operations against Israel, which has been conducting strikes on Lebanon and Gaza for more than a year.

The Operations Room of Hezbollah announced “the transition to a new and escalating phase in the confrontation with the Israeli enemy”, and that the decision was made “based on the directives of the Resistance Command”.

Israel has been targeting Lebanon since October 2023, after the regime launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

Since late September, Israel has escalated its strikes against Hezbollah, assassinating its leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah and a number of its senior figures.

At least 2,350 people have been killed by Israeli fire, and 10,900 others wounded since the clashes began last year, according to the health ministry.
