ICC replaces judge in Netanyahu arrest case on health grounds

ICC

Romanian magistrate Iulia Motoc asked to leave the three-judge panel on health grounds on Friday and was immediately replaced by Slovenian ICC judge Beti Hohler, the president of the ICC said.

The move is expected to further delay a decision in the case focused on the Gaza conflict as the new judge will need time to catch up on the filings.

In May prosecutors asked for arrest warrants for Netanyahu, his Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders, saying there were reasonable grounds that the men had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The court has no set deadlines, but has generally taken about three months to rule on requests for arrest warrants in previous cases.

The decision had already been held up by several rounds of legal filings from Israel challenging the jurisdiction of the court.

Flouting a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, Israel has continued a devastating offensive on the besieged enclave since an attack last year by Palestinian resistance group Hamas.

Nearly 43,000 people have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 100,000 others injured, according to local health authorities.

The Israeli onslaught has displaced almost the territory’s entire population amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the blockaded territory.

US, UK urge end to Israel, Iran retaliatory attacks

Israel Attack Iran

Washington has urged Tehran to stop attacking Israel to break the cycle of violence after Israel’s airstrikes on Iranian military targets in retaliation for a missile barrage.

The US National Security Council spokesman, Sean Savett, said on Saturday: “We urge Iran to cease its attacks on Israel so that this cycle of fighting can end without further escalation.”

Stressing that the US did not participate in the operation, he added, “It is our aim to accelerate diplomacy and de-escalate tensions in the Middle East region.”

A senior administration official said President Joe Biden and his national security team had worked with the “Israelis over recent weeks to encourage Israel to conduct a response that was targeted and proportional with low risk of civilian harm”.

“And that appears to have been precisely what transpired this evening,” the official told reporters.

London has also announced that it was “monitoring this situation closely” after the Israeli strikes on Iran.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Iran not to respond to the attack, saying the Middle East needs to “avoid further regional escalation”.

He said: “I am clear that Israel has the right to defend itself against Iranian aggression.”

“I’m equally clear that we need to avoid further regional escalation and urge all sides to show restraint. Iran should not respond,” he continued, adding, “We will continue to work with allies to deescalate the situation across the region.”

France has also taken note of Israel’s announcement of strikes against military targets in Iran.

“France urges the parties to refrain from any escalation and action likely to aggravate the context of extreme tension prevailing in the region,” the foreign ministry in Paris announced in a statement.

Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also warned Iran against any “escalation” after Israel struck Iranian military targets.

“My message to Iran is clear: massive escalating reactions must not continue. These must stop immediately. Only then can we open the possibility of a peaceful evolution in the Middle East,” he posted on X.

The Israel Defense Forces spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, confirmed early Saturday that the IDF conducted “precise strikes on military targets” in Iran on Friday night.

Iran’s air defense force has confirmed Israeli attacks targeting positions in Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam provinces, saying the offensives have caused limited damage.

“Despite the previous warnings of the officials of the Islamic Republic to the criminal and illegal Zionist regime to avoid any adventurous action, this fake regime attacked parts of military centers in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam this morning in a tension-causing action,” the air defense force announced in a statement on Saturday morning.

It further said that the country’s integrated air defense system successfully intercepted and countered the act of aggression.

The attacks caused limited damage in some locations and the dimensions of the incident are under investigation, the statement added.

Russia provided Yemen’s Houthis with satellite data to attack ships in Red Sea: Report

Yemen Houthi

Russian targeting data helped the Houthis expand their strikes, the sources told the WSJ. The data was reportedly handed over through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Such assistance shows how much Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to undermine the Western economic and political order, the WSJ wrote. According to experts, Moscow is trying to foment instability from the Middle East to Asia to cause problems for the US.

The WSJ reported in early October that infamous Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who was released in a prisoner swap between Russia and the US in 2022, was suspected of preparing a small arms deal with Houthi fighters.

Iran, one of Russia’s key allies, was also brokering secret negotiations between Moscow and Yemen’s Houthis to transfer Yakhont supersonic anti-ship missiles, Reuters reported in late September, citing seven unnamed sources.

Since the onset of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, Houthis have been conducting numerous strikes against the occupied territories. It has also carried out dozens of attacks on ships with links to Israel in a show of solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s military onslaught against the besieged enclave.

Houthis have stressed that they will not stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza end.

Flights return to normal in Iran after brief suspension over Israeli raids

Iran Airport

Jafar Yazarlou, the spokesman of the CAO, told state media that flights would resume from 9am local time (05:30 GMT), coming shortly after the Israeli military confirmed that its overnight attacks on Iran had concluded.

Neither Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran nor other airports were subjected to any attacks.

Patients, staff trapped in Gaza’s hospital amid Israeli siege

Gaza War

Israeli soldiers raided the hospital in northern Gaza on Friday and ordered patients to move down to the main courtyard, the Wafa news agency reported, as they conducted mass arrests.

At least two children have died in the intensive care unit after the hospital’s generators stopped and the oxygen station was targeted, the health ministry announced in a statement.

Among those inside are 195 patients, and 70 medical staff members, the ministry said in its statement, adding that the situation there is “alarmingly deteriorating”.

The raid came a day after Israeli tanks shelled the compound of the hospital, one of the few remaining functioning medical facilities in the north of the enclave, as the Israeli siege entered its third week.

According to the hospital’s director, Hussam Abu Safia, the intensive care unit suffered severe damage from the tank attack.

He warned that the hospital could become a mass grave as one patient was dying every hour as a result of the Israeli military assault.

World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Ghebreyesus said “we have lost touch with the personnel” at the hospital and called the raid “deeply disturbing”.

He wrote in a post on social media platform X, that the hospital “has been overflowing with close to 200 patients – a constant stream of horrific trauma cases. It is also full of hundreds of people seeking shelter”.

The Palestinian Health Ministry noted Israeli soldiers “stormed” the hospital, “detaining hundreds of patients, medical staff and some displaced individuals from neighbouring areas who sought refuge”.

Witnesses and doctors at the scene say fires had broken out, making it difficult for people to evacuate the building and for ambulances to operate. Wounded patients and those with other health complications were dragged outside the buildings into the courtyard of the hospital.

A second medical facility in northern Gaza, the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya, was put out of service on Monday as Israeli soldiers stormed a school and detained the men there before setting the facility ablaze. The fire reached the hospital generators, causing a power outage.

Those evacuated from the Indonesian Hospital were displaced to Kamal Adwan Hospital, a mid-size facility struggling to accommodate patients beyond capacity.

The United Nations announced it had been unable to reach all three hospitals in northern Gaza – Kamal Adwan, Indonesian and al-Awda Hospital – despite demanding access to allow aid in.

The UN Human Rights Office stressed it was “increasingly concerned that the manner in which the Israeli military is conducting hostilities” in northern Gaza, also with the “unlawful interference with humanitarian assistance and orders that are leading to forced displacement”.

Israel says 10 soldiers killed in Lebanon over 2 days

Israel Army

Five soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon on Thursday and another five were killed Friday, the IDF has announced.

Tel Aviv has mounted a massive air campaign in Lebanon since last month against what it says are Hezbollah targets in an escalation from a year of cross-border warfare between the regime and the group since the start of Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip.

Israel expanded the conflict on Oct. 1 this year by launching a ground assault into southern Lebanon.

In Lebanon, more than 2,500 people have been killed and over 12,000 wounded, according to the Lebanese ministry of health. The health ministry and doctors say hundreds of the casualties have been civilians, including women, children, the elderly, as well as scores of medics.

Some 1.2 million Lebanese have been displaced during the war.

A total of 163 health workers have been killed and 272 injured as a result of Israeli attacks since tensions flared up in West Asia in early October 2023, Lebanon’s acting Health Minister Firas Abyad announced at a press conference in Beirut.

Iranian military source dismisses Israeli claims of attacking 20 sites in Iran

Iran Air Defense System

According to the source, the actual number of targets is significantly lower, noting that no military centers related to the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) in Tehran were targeted.

Tasnim also quoted the source as saying the claim that 100 Israeli military aircraft participated in the attack is entirely false, adding, “Israel attempts to exaggerate the impact of its weak assault.”

The source also stated that Israel’s provocative move was conducted from outside Iran’s borders and caused limited damage.

Iran confirmed that Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military sites in Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam provinces in the early hours of Saturday, but said the raids had limited impact.

Iran’s air defense force announced it successfully intercepted and countered Israel’s act of aggression.

Normal life reportedly goes on in the capital Tehran and other cities following the strikes, but Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization has canceled all flights until further notice.

Iran and Israel have been engaged in a cycle of attacks and counterattacks amid the year-long Israeli campaign in Gaza and its spillover in the region.

Iran had earlier warned any Israeli strike on Iran would face harsher response than its previous operations in April and October.

Russia to deploy North Korean forces in Ukraine in days: Zelensky

North Korean Soldiers

“According to intelligence, the first North Korean soldiers are expected to be deployed by Russia to combat zones as early as October 27–28,” Zelensky wrote Friday on social platform X.

“North Korea’s actual involvement in combat should not be met with indifference or uncertain commentary, but with tangible pressure on both Moscow and Pyongyang, to uphold the UN Charter and to hold them accountable for this escalation,” he added.

Zelensky last week warned that North Korea was sending 10,000 troops to fight alongside Russian forces, and the United States on Wednesday confirmed that about 3,000 North Korean soldiers were training at military bases in Russia, spiking fears they would be used in Russia’s battle against Kyiv.

And Ukrainian spies spotted North Korean troops entering the combat zone Thursday, raising concerns about the war’s escalation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has not confirmed or denied his intentions to use North Korean soldiers in battle but insisted it was his country’s choice to make.

“When we have to decide something, we will decide … but it is our sovereign decision whether we will apply it, whether we will not, whether we need it,” Putin told Russian state television, adding, “This is our business.”

Putin has warned against interference from the West even as Zelensky has urged Ukraine’s allies to send additional weapons and munitions.

“The sooner they realise the futility of such an approach in relations with Russia, the better it will be for everyone, and perhaps, above all, for themselves.”

North Korea has long supplied Russia with artillery shells and short-range ballistic missiles in return for access to critical technology and financial aid.

But North Korea and Russia entered a strategic partnership in June after Putin traveled to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, forming an alliance to “provide military and other assistance by all means at its disposal” during a state of war for either country.

“Russia’s aggression has revealed deep cracks in the foundation of international security. It has exposed the UN’s inability to effectively respond to flagrant violations of its own Charter,” Ukrainian Cabinet member Andriy Yermak said in a statement.

“A permanent member of the Security Council has become an aggressor. This undermines the basic principles of the Organization,” he added.

Israeli military confirms Iran raids finished

Israel Attack Iran

“I can now confirm that we have concluded the Israeli response to Iran’s attacks against Israel,” Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in a video message shared by the Israel Defense Forces.

“We conducted targeted and precise strikes on military targets in Iran – thwarting immediate threats to the State of Israel. The Israel Defense Forces has fulfilled its mission,” he added.

Hagari warned that if Iran were to begin “a new round of escalation”, Israel will be “obligated to respond”.

“Our message is clear: All those who threaten the state of Israel and seek to drag the region into a wider escalation will pay a heavy price,” he stated.

“We demonstrated today that we have both the capability and the resolve to act decisively, and we are prepared on offense and defense, to defend the state of Israel and the people of Israel.”

Iran Air Defense Base: Israeli provocation caused ‘limited damage’

Israel Attack Iran

The Air Defense Base announced that despite previous warnings from Iranian officials to the Israeli regime to avoid any adventurous actions, the regime launched a provocative attack on military centers in Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam provinces early on Saturday.

The statement asserted, “The integrated air defense system of the country successfully intercepted and countered the aggressive action, resulting in limited damage to some areas, which is currently under investigation.”

The Air Defense Base called on the public to maintain solidarity and calm, urging them to follow news related to the incident through national media and ignore rumors from enemy media.

Around 02:15 am on Saturday local time, several explosion-like sounds were heard, especially in western Tehran.

At around 05:00 am on Saturday local time, the sound of Iranian air defense systems was heard in eastern and central Tehran.

The Tehran Air Defense Public Relations announced that the sounds heard around Tehran were related to the reaction of Tehran’s air defense systems in three points outside the city.

According to field reports and released footage, normal life goes on in the Iranian capital Tehran and other cities following Israeli strikes on the military targets.

Iran previously warned that any Israeli attack would be met with a firm response.
