Iran faces demographic challenge as births drop below one million for first time

Iran Population

The alarming forecast was revealed on Wednesday during a meeting with officials from the Medical Sciences Universities at the Ministry of Health.

Zafarghandi highlighted that unlike Western countries, Iran is experiencing an aging population before achieving full development.

“While other nations first developed and then faced population decline, Iran is encountering these issues concurrently,” he explained.

The minister emphasized that current fertility rates have dropped from 2.01 in 2016 to 1.66, and if the trend continues to 1.1, Iran will face a severe demographic crisis.

Pointing to the existing population laws that support married dormitories, infertile couples, and provide loans, he stressed the need for a scientific approach to population growth and warned against relying on untested global slogans and actions.

Zafarghandi called for a national resolve to address the crisis, urging changes in cultural and economic policies and responsibilities to create a cultural wave for increasing the youth population.

Iran condemns US veto on Gaza ceasefire resolution at UN Security Council

“Despite overwhelming global support for, and 14 UNSC members’ backing of Gaza ceasefire, the outgoing Democratic US administration vetoed the draft resolution, revealing its full contempt for innocent lives and regional peace and adding to its 13 months long complicity in Israel’s genocide,” Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on his X account on Thursday.

“This disgraceful veto not only marks another failure of UNSC to uphold its Charter based mandate but also serves as a US-granted license for occupying regime to continue its carnage in Gaza and Lebanon with impunity,” he added.

“This is in stark violation of established IHL (international humanitarian law) principle ‘respect and ensure respect’ as well as the Genocide Convention and entails United States international responsibility for complicity in atrocity crimes,” Baqaei noted.

The US on Wednesday vetoed a resolution at the UNSC demanding an “immediate, unconditional and permanent” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as Israel’s bombardment of the Palestinian territory continues.

The US voted down the measure while the 14 other members of the council voted in favor.

While the resolution called for the release of captives held in Gaza, Washington had voiced opposition to its demand for an “unconditional” ceasefire.

This is the fourth time that US President Joe Biden’s administration has vetoed a resolution calling for an end to the war in Gaza since Israel’s military offensive began in October of last year.

To date, nearly 44,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, which has also plunged the coastal territory into a humanitarian crisis.

Carving artists breathe new life into withered trees in Iran’s Zanjan

Carving artists breathe new life into withered trees in Iran’s Zanjan

Majid Doosti, the head of the organization, announced on Thursday that withered trees in Zanjan are being given a new identity using carvings and artistic designs.

The pilot project was initially implemented in Zanjan’s Sabzeh Meydan, and the current phase is being executed on Saadi Street north of the city.

Doosti stated that the project is aimed at making optimal use of the withered trees’ potential for urban beautification in order to present a new and distinctive appearance to Zanjan.

Ukraine launched British-supplied ‘Storm Shadows’ at Russia: Report

British Storm Shadows

The reported attacks come after Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky claimed to have received permission from multiple Western countries to deploy their long-range rockets against targets deep inside Russia. Moscow has warned that such attacks would amount to NATO’s direct involvement in the conflict.

“We as a nation and as a government are doubling down on our support for Ukraine and determined to do more,” British Defense Secretary John Healey said in Parliament on Wednesday.

London approved the use of ‘Storm Shadows’ in response to allegations from Kiev that North Korean troops had joined the fighting in Kursk Region, a “Western official familiar with the matter” told Bloomberg. The anonymous source noted that the British government considered the alleged move to be an escalation by Moscow.

Multiple outlets reported over the weekend that US President Joe Biden had lifted the restrictions on Kiev’s use of American missiles. While the White House has neither confirmed nor denied this officially, a volley of ATACMS projectiles was fired at Russia’s Bryansk Region early on Tuesday.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on the reports of ‘Storm Shadow’ strikes. According to one Telegram channel, up to 12 missiles were launched at Kursk Region on Wednesday afternoon, but were intercepted by air defenses. Photographs making the rounds on social media showed purported fragments of the British-made missiles found in the village of Maryino, about halfway between the Ukrainian border and the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in Kurchatov.

Another Telegram channel added that at least two missiles were intercepted over Yeysk, a seaport in Russia’s Krasnodar Region.

The US and its allies had placed certain restrictions on the use of the weapons they have supplied to Kiev since 2022, in order to maintain plausible deniability regarding their involvement in the conflict with Russia. Ukraine has been clamoring for lifting these limitations since May.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the use of Western long-range missiles by Kiev would change the nature of the conflict and make NATO a direct participant in the hostilities. Moscow has also revised its nuclear doctrine to encompass conventional attacks by proxies.

“Attempts by some NATO members to participate in the facilitation of possible long-range strikes with Western weapons deep inside Russian territory will not be left unpunished,” the head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergey Naryshkin, said on Wednesday.

While the US and the UK appear to have given Kiev the permission Zelensky demanded, France has said it’s still considering the move. Meanwhile, Germany and Italy have publicly said that their weapons can only be used on Ukrainian soil.

Iran security official: No part of Israeli occupied territories beyond our reach

Ahmadian and Sabbagh

He made the comments during a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh in Tehran on Wednesday.

Ahmadian highlighted that, strategically, Israel has achieved no significant success despite its widespread attacks on innocent civilians.

“The Zionist regime has suffered substantial losses, is grappling with a bankrupt economy, and today global public opinion acknowledges the legitimacy of the oppressed Palestinian nation while recognizing Israeli occupation and racism,” he asserted.

He emphasized that the Zionist enemy’s attempts to create hype over minor strikes on Iran pale in comparison to Iran’s capability to strike any point in the occupied territories, despite the extensive support provided by US and Western defense systems.

Ahmadian further noted that Hezbollah and other resistance forces have effectively trapped Israel on the ground, forcing its Western and American allies to scramble for solutions to prevent further blows to the regime.

“It is now evident that the resistance is shaping the region’s future,” he concluded, reaffirming the enduring strength of Iran-Syria relations.

Sabbagh, in turn, remarked, “Few can comprehend the strategic depth and scope of relations between the two nations. Those attempting to drive a wedge between us fail to grasp the profound nature of this partnership.”

He added, “Today, Hezbollah and the resistance not only defend Lebanon but also safeguard the entire region and Arab countries against Israeli aggression. Defeating the Zionist project lies solely in this battlefield.”

The minister also expressed gratitude for Iran’s unwavering support across various levels.

Iran, Qatar call for end to Gaza war

Pezeshkian Qatari FM

In a meeting held in Tehran on Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian engaged in discussions with Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar.

The top officials’ talks focused on bolstering cooperation between the two nations and touched upon various topics of mutual interest.

They also addressed pressing regional issues, including the urgent need to put an end to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and exploring pathways to peace in Lebanon.

Mohammed al-Thani conveyed warm regards from the Qatari Emir, expressing wishes for the Iranian President’s good health and happiness, while hoping for continued prosperity for the Iranian government and its people. The Iranian President also asked the Qatari Prime Minister to send his warm wishes to the Emir.

President Pezeshkian highlighted the agreements reached during his recent visit to Qatar, emphasizing the necessity to accelerate their implementation. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to fostering broader and deeper relations with its friendly neighbor.

The Qatari Prime Minister expressed a strong interest in furthering ties with Iran, announcing that the Emir of Qatar is expected to visit Iran early next year.

During Pezeshkian’s visit to Doha in October, Iranian and Qatari officials signed agreements aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including trade, education, and sports.

Also on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi engaged in discussions with his Qatari counterpart, further solidifying their diplomatic relations.

The two senior diplomats underscored the urgent need to halt the Israeli regime’s genocidal actions in Gaza and to put an end to its aggression against Lebanon.

They also discussed initiatives for enhanced consultations and the mobilization of regional and international efforts to curb the escalation of insecurity throughout the region.

Furthermore, the Iranian and Qatari Foreign Ministers advocated for the strengthening of cooperation between Tehran and Doha across all sectors.

US vetoes another UN Security Council resolution demanding Gaza ceasefire

US UNSC

The draft resolution was aimed at calling for an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza and the release of all hostages held by Palestinian groups in the blockaded Strip.

The measure received 14 votes in favour, with the US the sole member to reject it. However, because the US is a permanent member of the council, it has the ability to veto any resolution brought forward.

“We made clear throughout negotiations, we could not support an unconditional ceasefire that failed to release the hostages,” Robert Wood, the alternate US representative to the UN, said during a debate following the vote.

“Simply put, this resolution would have sent a dangerous message to Hamas: there’s no need to come back to the negotiating table,” he added.

Unlike several previous resolutions regarding a ceasefire in Gaza, Wednesday’s measure was brought forward by all 10 elected members of the Security Council.

The US has vetoed four previous attempts at calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, on most occasions being the lone vote against the measures.

Since Israel’s war on Gaza began a year ago, Israel has killed more than 43,900 Palestinians and wounded more than 103,000, according to the official death toll from the Palestinian health ministry. Some estimates, however, place the death toll at more than 100,000 Palestinians.

The United States under the Joe Biden administration has provided both diplomatic cover and military support for Israel’s war efforts in Gaza, and now Lebanon, while also playing a role in the negotiations for an end to the conflict.

However, more than a year on, ceasefire talks have not garnered any results.

Earlier this month, Qatar, which has played a leading role in facilitating the peace talks, announced it would withdraw as a key mediator in Gaza negotiations unless Israel and Hamas fully commit to ceasefire efforts.

On several occasions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected ceasefire proposals accepted by Hamas, defying the advice of his security establishment.

Hamas has been adamant that any ceasefire deal must eventually lead to the total withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from the Gaza Strip.

The group rejected a recent proposal that would have brought the release of a small number of Israeli captives and a 30-day cessation of hostilities, but no withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from the besieged enclave.

Syria says dozens killed, injured in Israeli strike on Palmyra

Israeli F-35 warplanes

The air attack was launched from the direction of al-Tanf in eastern Syria and caused “significant material damage”, Syria’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Wednesday that was quoted by the state news agency SANA.

Al-Tanf is an area near the Iraqi border controlled by the United States.

Since the Syrian war began in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria, targeting the army and Iran-backed groups.

But since Israel’s war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023, it has ramped up its strikes in Syria as hostilities with the Iran-aligned Lebanese group Hezbollah have intensified.

Syrian state media reported several Israeli air raids last week in Homs province, which borders Lebanon. Palmyra is located in Homs.

Palmyra is known for its ancient city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was seized by the ISIS (ISIL) armed group in 2015 and partially destroyed before it was recaptured by the Syrian army.

Iran’s president asks Pope to intervene to stop Israeli crimes in Gaza, Lebanon

Masoud Pezeshkian

Pezeshkian has written to Pope Francis requesting his efforts to help bring a halt to Israel’s barbarism amid the increasing risk of the outbreak of a regional war.

In the letter, Pezeshkian urged attempts to establish a ceasefire and to create opportunities for humanitarian aid to be sent to the victims.

Referring to the crimes of Israel in Gaza and their extension to Lebanon over the past year, the Iranian president said “these savage attacks are ongoing without regard for rights and international norms”.

“Genocide and widespread destruction of urban and medical infrastructure are occurring, with a significant portion of martyrs and injured being women, children, and civilians.”

It is “deeply regrettable”, the Iranian president stated, that the world witnesses such cruelty and violation of human rights in sacred lands that have been home to great prophets and messengers of peace for all humanity.

Pezeshkian added Iran has been striving to bring a ceasefire and prevent the escalation of war, as manifested by its decision to delay its response to Israel’s assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late July.

“Following this incident, we aimed to deliver a firm response based on principles outlined in the United Nations Charter regarding legitimate territorial defense against those responsible for this crime.”

However, Pezeshkian noted, “due to persistent messages from Western leaders warning that our actions could jeopardize efforts for establishing a ceasefire, we delayed our response.”

“Nevertheless, despite our restraint, the occupying Israeli regime continued its blatant violations of the sovereign rights of regional countries by launching extensive attacks on Lebanon that are still ongoing.”

Pezeshkian asked the Pope to exert his good offices to prevent further inhumane aggressions and encourage world leaders, not least Christian nations, to contribute to this vital cause.

“Undoubtedly, this action can significantly impact alleviating victims’ suffering and addressing those in distress. The Islamic Republic of Iran declares its readiness to assist in this process,” he continued.

The Iranian president also expressed hope for further expansion of Iran’s constructive engagement with the Vatican in pursuit of peace and justice worldwide.

Baghdad condemns Israeli letter to UN as pretext to justify assault against Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani

“The message sent by the Zionist entity (Israel) to the UN Security Council represents a pretext for aggression against Iraq and aligns with its ongoing efforts to expand the war in the region,” Sudani said in a statement on Tuesday.

He emphasized the Baghdad government’s rejection of threats against his country, saying, “Decisions of war and peace are solely within the authority of the Iraqi state, and no party is allowed to infringe upon this right.”

Israel has already warned the Iraqi government that unless it reins in the attacks by the resistance groups, it faces Israeli strikes on its territory, according to reports.

The Iraqi prime minister also reaffirmed his country’s position of staying out of conflict, while maintaining its principled stance of seeking an end to Gaza and Lebanon crises, and providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian and Lebanese peoples.

On Monday, Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar sent a letter to the UN Security Council, asking the body to pressure the Iraqi government to end attacks by resistance fighters in the Arab country against the Tel Aviv regime’s interests.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, has been conducting numerous operations against sensitive targets lying across the Israeli-occupied territories since October 7 last year, when the Zionist entity began waging a bloody onslaught against the Gaza Strip.
