Iran, E3 set to resume talks in January: Spokesman

Esmael baghaei

He noted that Iran and the three European countries, also known as E3, initially agreed to carry on with talks following the previous format and context.

Iran has consistently stayed committed to negotiations over the past two decades in an effort to address concerns and has never abandoned the negotiating table, he highlighted.

Baqaei emphasized that Iran’s decisions will be based on the attitudes and actions of the parties involved.

Tensions between Iran and European countries have escalated over the past two years due to European accusations.

European countries claim that Iran has supplied ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the Ukraine conflict, an allegation that Tehran has categorically rejected.

In a recent action against Tehran, the European troika pushed the adoption of a resolution in the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in November.

The resolution accused Tehran of poor cooperation with the agency and demanded a “comprehensive” report on its nuclear activities by spring 2025.

In response, Iran stressed it has activated a “series of new and advanced centrifuges”.

Legendary Iranian actress, voice performer Zhaleh Olov passes away

Zhaleh Olov

Her son, Shahrokh Razmjoo, confirmed her passing, stating that she died around noon on Monday at Shahram Hospital in the Iranian capital.

Olov was a distinguished figure in the field of acting and voice-over, and was honored at the 8th Eternal Faces, an event commemorating the prominent figures in various fields in Iran, in 2010.

The Iranian Ministry of Culture extended its condolences to her family and the artistic community.

Born in 1927 in the Sanglaj neighborhood of Tehran, Olov was raised in a family that highly valued culture. Her father, an army officer with a passion for art, encouraged her to engage with Persian literature from a young age. By seven, she was familiar with the works of towering Iranian poets Hafez, Saadi, and Ferdowsi.

Olov began her career directly from elementary teacher training college by joining the radio, where she became a staple in radio drama through the Night Story program.

She continued her work in radio seriously from 1948 onwards.

Throughout her career, Olov played roles in various television series, with notable performances in Once Upon a Time and the movie Mum’s Guest.

Iran says has not in direct contact with Syria’s new rulers

Esmael Baghaei

Asked about Iran’s contact with the opposition groups that overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Esmaeil Baqaei said at a press conference on Monday that there is no direct contact between Iran and the ruling current in Syria at present.

He noted that Iran had stepped in to fight against terrorism in Syria in the past, adding that there used to be contacts with a number of Syrian opposition groups in order to settle the crisis.

The spokesman also reiterated Iran’s policy of support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that the Syrian people alone must decide their own fate.

It is necessary to prevent Syria from turning into a haven for the rise of terrorism, he added.

Highlighting the age-old political and civilizational relations between Iran and Syria and pointing to Iran’s assistance for Syria in the war on terrorism, Baqaei stated, “In the future, we will make decisions considering the behavior of the ruling currents in Syria.”

In remarks on December 22, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said a group of rioters, with the help and planning of foreign governments, managed to exploit Syria’s internal weaknesses to plunge the country into chaos.

“Their plans in Syria led to unrest and chaos, and now the United States, the Zionist regime, and their allies, feeling victorious, have resorted to extravagant claims and nonsensical talk, like the followers of devil,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei asserted that the future of the region will be better tomorrow than it is today.

“We predict that a strong, honorable group will also emerge in Syria, as today’s youth in Syria have nothing left to lose. Their schools, universities, homes, and streets are fraught with insecurity. Therefore, they must stand firmly against those who orchestrate and perpetuate this insecurity and strive to overcome them,” he stated.

Italy warns Russia’s threat to Europe much wider than imagined

Giorgia Meloni

“It’s about our democracy, it’s about influencing our public opinion, it’s about what happens in Africa, it’s about raw materials, it’s about the instrumentalization of migration. We need to know it’s a very wide idea of security,” Meloni was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Russia and Belarus have been orchestrating an influx of migrants since 2021, letting thousands of asylum seekers to the European Union’s eastern borders with a pledge of safe entry into the EU.

In November 2021, Belarusian troops escorted thousands of asylum seekers to the Polish border, cutting through the wire fence to allow refugees to cross. Most of them were violently pushed back by Polish border guards who set up a no-access zone at the border for nine months.

Italy’s right-wing prime minister urged the EU to view migration as a distributive problem as well as a security one.

“Security also means critical infrastructure, it means artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, raw materials, supply chains. It means a new and more effective foreign and cooperation policy, it means migration,” Meloni added.

Meloni cautioned against complacency in the EU, adding that even after Russia’s war in Ukraine ends, its security challenge will not go away.

“We have to understand the threat is much wider than we imagine.”

Tensions between Europe and Moscow have surged after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The EU imposed 15 packages of sanctions against Russia, and most of its members provided military support to Kyiv.

Deputy FM raps US for holding Iranians hostage

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran

In a post on his X account, Vahid Jalalzadeh deplored the arrest of two Iranian citizens in the US and Italy for alleged connection with a drone attack that killed three US soldiers in Jordan in January.

“The unilateral and cruel US sanctions and every measure caused by those illegal sanctions, such as taking Iranians hostage on various pretexts like circumventing the unlawful and illegitimate sanctions, are condemned and run counter to the international law,” the Iranian foreign minister’s deputy for consular, parliamentary, and Iranian expatriates’ affairs said.

Jalalzadeh stated that the Foreign Ministry is duty-bound to protect the rights of Iranians worldwide.

The US federal prosecutors in Boston on December 16 charged 38-year-old Mohammad Abedini, the co-founder of an Iranian-based company, and Mahdi Sadeqi, 42, an employee of Massachusetts-based semiconductor manufacturer Analog Devices, with conspiring to violate US export laws.

Abedini, a dual citizen of Switzerland and Iran, was arrested in Milan, Italy, at the request of the US government, which will seek his extradition. Sadeqi, an Iranian-born naturalized US citizen, who lives in Natick, Massachusetts, was also arrested.

The two Iranians have been arrested and charged by the US authorities with allegedly exporting sensitive technology that was used in a drone attack that killed three US soldiers and wounded 47 others at a US military outpost in Jordan, near the Syrian border, in January.

Iran’s interior minister warns population crisis looms

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the nationwide electronic birth certificate system, Momeni emphasized the urgent need for smart automation in all processes.

He stated that the digitization of birth certificates, made possible through the cooperation of the Civil Registration Organization and the Ministry of Health, marks a significant step towards complete digital transformation of identity processes in the country.

However, the focal point of the event was the declining birth rates in the country, with Momeni stressing the importance of implementing the Family and Youth Support Law effectively.

Acknowledging that previous efforts have not been successful, Momeni called for a thorough analysis and more coordinated action across all sectors and institutions to address this pressing issue.

He called for a nationwide effort to raise awareness and stop the decline before aiming for population growth.

Iran currently has a population of around 84 million.

US suggests Ukraine consider ceding territories: El Pais

Russia Ukraine War

Trump has repeatedly pledged to end the Ukraine conflict within a day of taking office, but has yet to elaborate on how he plans to achieve this. His vows have raised concerns in Kiev that it may be facing not only a decline in aid but also an audit of the billions of dollars it has received from the White House under President Joe Biden.

“You look at some of these cities and there is not a single building in good condition left. So, when you say “restore the country”, restore what? This is a 110-year reconstruction,” the Spanish daily cited Trump as saying in a “message” to Zelensky from his Florida golf club this week.

Earlier this month, Trump called on both Ukraine and Russia to reach an immediate ceasefire. He posted the call on his social media platform Truth Social after meeting in Paris with Zelensky and President Emmanuel Macron.

The Wall Street Journal reported in early December, citing officials, that Trump had said Western Europe should deploy its troops to Ukraine to monitor a potential ceasefire.

He reportedly added that the EU should play the main role in defending and supporting Kiev, while Washington could support the effort without sending troops.

Speaking at his end-of-year press conference on Thursday, Russian president Vladimir Putin reiterated that Moscow remains open to negotiating with Kiev without any preconditions, except those that had already been agreed upon in Istanbul in 2022, which envisaged a neutral, non-aligned status for Ukraine, as well as certain restrictions on deploying foreign weaponry. He also noted that such talks would have to respect the realities on the ground that have developed since that time.

Iranian official touts  blanket removal of internet filtering, dismisses step-by-step plan as ‘ineffective’

Mobile Internet Iran

Mohammad Sarafraz, who is also a former head of the IRIB state television and radio organization, advocated for an immediate and complete removal of filters on social networks and online stores like Google Play, arguing that the current blocking policy, imposed to contain social unrest, has backfired.

Sarafraz emphasized that the gradual lifting of internet filtering, proposed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, is not effective and warned that the current widespread restriction is unsustainable.

He believes that an immediate removal of the filters would prevent users from resorting to VPNs and other circumvention tools, which have become increasingly valuable due to the restrictions.

Noting that 80% of Iranian users are relying on VPNs, he warned, “Continued restrictions could push administrative and residential complexes toward satellite internet, ultimately forcing a delayed removal of the filters.”

Sarafraz denied reports of any council vote on the matter, explaining, “The plan was set to be reviewed by a special commission, but no further meetings have taken place, leaving members’ opinions unknown.”

The Supreme Council of Cyberspace is tasked with overseeing the internet in Iran.

Sacked Persepolis coach Garrido bids emotional farewell

Juan Carlos Garrido

In his post, Garrido expressed his gratitude and appreciation for everyone involved with the club.

He wrote, “Thank you, Persepolis. I can only thank all of you: the players, staff, and fans. I thoroughly enjoyed our time together. Thank you, Tehran. Thank you, Iran. You will always be in my heart. I wish you all the best. Goodbye.”

Garrido managed 20 matches this season, achieving 9 wins, 5 draws, and 6 losses. His record includes victories in the Premier League, Persian Gulf Pro League, and Hazfi Cup.

According to Iranian news agencies, following Garrido’s departure, the Persepolis board of directors held a meeting on Sunday.

During the meeting, they appointed Karim Bagheri, a former star of Iranian football, as the interim head coach for the upcoming half-season until a new head coach is selected.

Jalal Hosseini will also join Bagheri as an assistant coach.

Sanctions against Syria must be lifted ‘as soon as possible’: Turkish FM

Hakan Fidan stated a lifting of the long-standing sanctions was vital to allow the country’s economy to recover after 13 years of conflict.

“The sanctions imposed on the previous regime need to be lifted as soon as possible,” he said in a press conference.

“The international community needs to mobilise to help Syria get back on its feet and for the displaced people to return,” the minister added.

Turkey has been eager to involve itself in the transition from the government of Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown by rebels on 8 December.

Earlier this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara was already working with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sharaa (also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani) and others on forming the new constitution, which he described as the most important step for the country.

Although there is no overt support from the Turkish government for HTS, both parties have been engaging with each other for years.

Ankara reportedly green-lit the operation to capture Aleppo last month, leading to the events that drove Assad to flee the country.

It has also been eager to return some of the millions of Syrians who have fled to Turkey since the war began in 2011.

Turkey’s intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin visited Damascus on 12 December, just a few days after Assad’s fall.

He was filmed leaving the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, surrounded by bodyguards.
