Put an end to discussions over the Iran nuclear deal

1898686 (1)

Mohammad Javad Zarif has said that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is now behind us, calling for an end to discussions surrounding JCPOA.

The foreign minister made the comment on Monday in a joint meeting of governors general from across the country and heads of Iran’s diplomatic missions abroad and added that JCPOA gets a low mark [5 out of 100] when looked at through a pessimistic lens and a high mark [95 out of 100] when viewed through an optimistic lens. “If we fail to seize the opportunity that has arisen in the wake of JCPOA, the mark will plummet to zero. If we get involved in bickering, we will get neither 5 nor 95.”

The following is the translation of what else Zarif said in the gathering as reported by alef.ir on November 9:

JCPOA

We should take into account the timing of the Iran nuclear deal and the country’s conditions if we seek to review JCPOA. In 2011, Iran sold 2.5 million barrels of oil per day, that figure dropped to 900,000 barrels two years later. The enemy was trying to push down Iran’s oil sales even further. Iran’s oil exports would have been somewhere in the neighborhood of zero if Iran and P5+1 had not inked the Geneva Agreement and the Joint Plan of Action.

Some close their eyes to realities on the ground and pay no heed to the fact that Iran’s economic growth began to slip into negative territory back in 2011 [-6 percent]. Now the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is over, whatever it was. I recommend those supporting the government stop discussing JCPOA because we need to tap into collective measures, reach a national consensus and seize the post-JCPOA opportunities.

Infiltration

We should not fight over ‘infiltration’. We are all following the Supreme Leader’s guidelines and are concerned about infiltration [of outsiders]. The Foreign Ministry is meticulously monitoring foreigner shots at infiltration. We believe that the best way to counter infiltration is to take the initiative. Time has come for us to seize the initiative and make maximal use of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

We are all anxious to seize the post-JCPOA opportunities to serve the interests of the public, the country, the establishment and the revolution. The Supreme Leader has repeatedly talked about the threat of infiltration and abuse by the revolution’s ill-wishers [of the nuclear deal].

JCPOA can turn into an opportunity for us, but we will face grave dangers if we lack planning and vigilance, and get involved in infighting rather than trying to take the initiative. We should not let domestic differences play into the hands of the ill-wishers.

Today the ill-wishers and even Iran’s regional friends have become agitated and terrified, because their long-term investment and plans to portray Iran as a country in which a security-charged atmosphere prevails have produced no results. They are scrambling to stop their plans from failing. That’s why we need to make thoughtful planning on that front.

Extremism and sectarianism

The threat of extremism and sectarianism has its roots in shortsighted and flawed policies of certain regional and international players. Today violent groups which have grown in the region act in the name of Islam and ideologically influence teenagers and young adults.

The barbaric crimes these groups commit are not logically acceptable. These groups pose a security threat to the entire world, but certain countries in this region have not yet realized the threat of extremism. As long as they do not accept the fact that such a threat exists, Takfiri groups will be given extensive support by certain institutions within sovereign states in the region.

Iran’s ambassadors and governors general can have consultation to review different aspects of extremism threat, offset such a threat and stop sectarianism, tribalism and Shiite-Sunni divisions from growing. We need consultation and like-mindedness in this regard.

Foreign Ministry

Over the past three decades, the Foreign Ministry has not developed expertise on the economic front. Governors general can offer counseling to the Foreign Ministry and introduce the capabilities and needs of their provinces to the ministry. Contacts between the provinces and the Foreign Ministry can help meet the needs of the provinces and make use of their potential.

An envoy makes headlines in Malaysia even before arrival in KL

Afkham

Marzieh Afkham, Iran’s new ambassador to Malaysia who has yet to arrive in Kuala Lumpur, has made headlines in this Southeast Asian country.

The website of the Malaysia Insider has said “Iran has appointed its first woman ambassador since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, naming Foreign Ministry officer Marzieh Afkham to head its embassy in Malaysia.”

It also quoted Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as saying “Choosing Afkham as ambassador took a few minutes, but choosing her successor took four months.”

The Sun Daily too covered news on Afkham’s new assignment and said, “Iran’s moderate President Hassan Rouhani called on ministers to appoint women to high posts and said his government would stand up against discrimination.”

The daily further said Iranian women may hold key posts, including in parliament and the Cabinet.

The Malay Mail Online was another Malaysian newspaper that gave coverage to news of Afkham’s appointment as ambassador to Kuala Lumpur.

Before being appointed as ambassador, Marzieh Afkham served as Foreign Ministry spokeswoman and before that as the head of the Foreign Ministry’s Media and Public Diplomacy Center.

At the induction ceremony of Afkham’s replacement Sunday, Foreign Minister Zarif said that, “Today, the first female ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran is heading for Malaysia, which is a friendly, brotherly and very important country to Iran, to bolster ties between the two countries.”

Alikhan Abdollahi is a 27-year-old Afghan national who fled the civil war in his country along with his brother and came to Iran 16 years ago, hoping to find peace here. Back them he never imagined that one day he could display his handworks at an exhibition.

What follows is the translation of part of a report about the Afghan artist iscanews.ir has released:

Alikhan is a janitor in the capital and has been making sculptures for more than a decade.

“I think of myself as a self-thought artist in the true sense of the word, because I have never had a trainer. Building on my imagination which erupts like a volcano inside me, I create artworks,” the Afghan artist said.

He added, “A spark of inspiration is enough for a person to get started; it is not clear when and where such a spark happens. An old man who created paintings of flowers on paper with his fingertips was my source of inspiration. In fact, I view him, who was also a self-thought artist, as my mentor.”

The Afghan sculptor went on to say, “I have trained a student too. Arash is Iranian and has created very beautiful works.”

Abdollahi, whose sculptures have been put on show in both the Iranian Artists Forum and Day Art Gallery twice, and have held exhibitions in Laleh Park, Sa’dabad Palace, Niavaran Cultural Center, Abi Art Gallery and Milad Tower, says, “I am not satisfied with my works and plan to carry on with efforts to improve them.”

He concluded, “I might send my son abroad on a scholarship. I like Iran and think of the Iranians as honorable people.”

Iran to US defense chief: Watch your words

Dehghan

Iran’s defense minister has warned his American counterpart to mind his words, following accusations by the US official that the Islamic Republic is militarily active in certain countries in the Middle East.

“US Secretary of Defense [Ashton Carter] had better go over his past record in this position of authority and reconsider his bully-like and aggressive stances and talk more sensibly and circumspectly henceforth,” Brigadier-General Hossein Dehghan said on Sunday.

Carter had better “save the US more troubles like the ones it is already bedeviled by in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen and [also] refrain from provoking the sentiments of the countries of the [Middle East] region by humiliating [them],” the Iranian minister added.

On Friday, American magazine The Atlantic published an interview with the US defense chief, in which he alleged, “If you look at where the Iranians are able to wield influence, they are in the game, on the ground” in a number of countries.

Dehghan also expressed wonder as to why “the complex and apparently powerful and ubiquitous American intelligence agencies” mislead their authorities into [taking] “unreal, irrational, and aggressive positions.”

The Islamic Republic “is after stability and security in the region,” he said, adding that the regional security will come with the absence of US and trans-regional countries and intervention.

The Iranian official further pointed to the strategy maintained by the United States and Israel to perpetuate insecurity, war, and bloodshed in the Middle East.

“The Americans can no longer hide their hideous and ugly aggressive face behind deceitful slogans. This guise came off years ago and no nation considers the US to be its well-wisher.”

Misinformed about regional affairs

Reacting to Carter’s remarks, Chief of Staff of the armed forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi said, “We are certain that the US secretary of defense’s remarks are based on wrong information and the absence of correct perception of regional issues.”

“Our policy regarding neighboring and Muslim countries [is that of] Islamic unity, preservation of Muslims’ interests [as well as] independence, and sovereignty of all of them,” he noted.

Saudi charge d’affaires summoned over execution of Iranians

Ghashghavi

Iran has summoned Saudi Arabia’s charge d’affaires following the execution of three Iranian nationals convicted by the kingdom of drug smuggling.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry called in Saudi Charge d’affairesAhmed al-Muwallid in the absence of the ambassador to convey its dismay over the executions on Sunday.

Hassan Ghashghavi, an Iranian deputy foreign minister, said earlier that “Unfortunately, by implementing the death sentence against three Iranian nationals, the government of Saudi Arabia did not do bilateral ties justice.”

“Countries refrain from executing such sentences by respecting bilateral relations and keeping in mind that implementing such sentences will not have a positive effect on the ties,” he noted.

“There are many foreign nationals sentenced to death in Iran. However, implementation of their verdicts has been prevented… due to expediency,” the official said.

He also said the Iranians had been denied legal representation and that Tehran would take proportionate diplomatic action following the executions.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said Sunday the death sentences of the Iranians, who had been arrested while allegedly smuggling large amounts of hashish to the kingdom, were carried out in the city of Dammam, the capital of the Eastern Province, earlier in the day.

The sentences had been endorsed by the kingdom’s Supreme Court as well as King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Minister: Iran can be a health hub for regional countries

Hashemi

The health minister says Iran can render health services to as many as 400 million people living in this region.

Dr. Hassam Hashemi made the remark on Sunday in a gathering of foreign-based Iranian ambassadors and added that Iran’s health system is among the leading systems in the region. The following is the translation of what else the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) quoted the minister as saying in the gathering:

The minister said that Iran’s health system is capable of offering services to as many as 80 million Iranians and cover a population of between 150 and 400 million living in regional countries, adding that Iran – in cooperation with its partners in this region – should turn into a regional hub for people to receive treatment.

Over the past two years, the Government of Prudence and Hope, the Foreign Ministry and the foreign minister have managed to “negotiate one of the revolution’s most insurmountable passes”, building on the guidelines of the Supreme Leader and advice of the president, he said, adding that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) [Iran has inked with P5+1) is not a small achievement and that the posterity will pass better judgment on the Iran nuclear deal.

Dr. Hashemi went on to say that the Foreign Ministry carried out its own responsibility and now the onus is on parliament and other agencies to put this big achievement to good use. “The Health Ministry will seize the opportunity that will open up in the post-sanctions era to upgrade the health services it renders to the public.”

The minister then touched upon the Healthcare Transformation Plan and said that over the past two years his ministry rode out a pharmaceutical crisis by implementing the giant healthcare plan, adding that as many as 2,000 Health Houses were built across the country, the ministry overcame the shortages of physicians in towns with a population of less than 20,000, and around 6,000-7,000 specialists were dispatched to less developed areas in the country.

Fringe dwelling triggered by drought and war is a headache for the country, he said, adding that his ministry has offered health coverage to about nine million fringe dwellers by implementing the Healthcare Transformation Plan.

The health minister also said that foreign investors can now seize multiple opportunities inside Iran and put their money into building hospitals and health system infrastructure, adding that foreign investment should be in line with the country’s policies of ensuring Iran’s independence and cutting its dependence [on others].

Iran can make maximal use of post-sanctions conditions by importing the know-how on the health front, he said.

Dr. Hashemi concluded that the country should take steps toward bringing in the technical know-how so that it can make progress and maintain its independence.
