Steinmeier’s visit is aimed at preparing the ground for talks between Tehran and Riyadh.

Tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia was created when the Saudi rulers executed a prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr on January 2.

Tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia was created when the Saudi rulers executed a prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr on January 2.

Iran’s Police arrested a number of protestors.

A day after on January 3, Saudi foreign minister announced that Riyadh severed its diplomatic relations with Tehran.

Under the pretext of its embassy issue, Riyadh has formed a so-called anti-Iran coalition and is trying to add members to that coalition by taking unwise measures.

Holding telephone conversations with his Iranian and Saudi counterparts, Steinmeier has stressed importance of avoiding further tensions between Tehran and Riyadh.

He has also called for making any kind of effort not to damage the achievements gained in Syria peace talks in recent months.

At present, the most important issue that Germany is concerned about is to successfully finalize the peace talks on Syria in Vienna to prevent the flow of Syrian refugees into that country.

Iran: All sanctions to be annulled today

“Today, with the submission of the report by the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the JCPOA will in fact become implemented, and after that, a joint statement… will be read out to announce the implementation,” Zarif told reporters on arrival in Vienna.

“We think that the implementation of the JCPOA is not only a very good opportunity for the Iranian people by which all the oppressive Security Council sanctions, all the resolutions of the IAEA Board of Governors will end and officially be annulled, but all the oppressive sanctions that have been imposed over the nuclear issue against the Islamic Republic will God willing be annulled today… and this is a very good day for the Iranian people,” Zarif said.

“But, besides, we believe that this is a very good day for the region; our region will be relieved of the shadow of an unnecessary conflict that could have caused worry for this region,” he said.

“This is also a good day for the world,” the Iranian foreign minister said, adding, “Today is a day when we prove to the world that threats, sanctions, intimidation, pressure don’t work; respect works.”

“Through respect, through dialog, through negotiations, we can in fact reach mutually-acceptable solutions, implement mutually-acceptable solutions, prove that the nay-sayers were always wrong, and therefore move towards a world in which diplomacy – not force, not pressure – will prevail,” Zarif said.

World’s largest portrait painting workshop

Portrait Painting workshop dubbed “Flight 464” was held here on Imam Hossein Square in Tehran, on Friday, to eternal the faces of those killed during Mina tragedy and crane crash in Hajj 2015.

The crush occurred after two large masses of pilgrims converged at a crossroads in Mina during the symbolic ceremony of the stoning of Satan in Jamarat on September 24.

Saudi Arabia claims nearly 770 people were killed in the incident, but Iranian officials say about 4,700 people lost their lives in the tragedy.

The number of the Iranian fatalities is at least 464, exceeding that of other countries.

Saudi Arabia has come under harsh criticism over its role and handling of the Mina incident.

The tragedy came days after a massive construction crane collapsed into Mecca’s Grand Mosque, killing more than 100 people and leaving over 200 others wounded. According to the figures released by Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, 11 Iranian pilgrims were among the deceased and 32 of the injured were also Iranian nationals.

Saudi playing victim over Iran tensions: Leader aide

“In my opinion, this (the recent tension) was the result of the wrong policies of Saudis who didn’t know their limits and that’s why they made efforts to isolate Iran by playing victim,” Ali-Akbar Velayati said in an interview with ISNA on Friday.

He, however, added that Iran enjoys a strategic position in the region and gives priority to the establishment of close relations with other countries, particularly neighbors, on its foreign policy agenda.

Velayati stressed the importance of interaction with neighboring states, saying Iran accepts cooperation with countries based on equal footing and mutual respect.

He noted that the continuation of Iran’s relations with other countries depends on their will and said, “It is impossible in the arena of foreign policy to make a decision without taking the opposite side’s demands into consideration.”

The Leader’s aide emphasized that powerful countries currently seek to interact with Iran based on mutual respect due to the Islamic Republic’s might in regional and international scenes.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran on January 3 following demonstrations held in front of the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad by angry protesters censuring the Al Saud family for the killing of top cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

Some people mounted the walls of the consulate in Mashhad while incendiary devices were hurled at the embassy in Tehran.

Thailand plans to raise trade with Iran to $5bn

“The value of trade and [mutual] investment between Iran and Thailand can increase to $1.2 billion two years into the lifting of the sanctions,” Thai Deputy Minister of Commerce Suvit Maesincee said.

“Within four or five years after the removal of the sanctions, the transactions between the two countries can reach $3 billion or even $5 billion,” he added.

Maesincee said Iran-Thailand trade was reduced last year by $600 million due to oil price fall and global recession.

He said Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai is expected to travel to Tehran in coming days.

Maesincee said Iran is located in a “strategic position” providing access to Eurasian countries of 700 million people.

Iran currently enjoys a meager $99 million share in Thailand’s $200 billion market.

Sanctions relief

The European Union is ready to lift economic sanctions against Iran as soon as the UN nuclear agency verifies Tehran’s compliance with its obligations under a nuclear agreement it reached with six world powers last July.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is expected to issue its final report on Saturday confirming that Iran has lived up to its obligations under the nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The IAEA is expected to confirm that Iran had fulfilled its obligations so that the 28-nation EU, alongside the United States and the United Nations, can end their sanctions on what is known as “Implementation Day” for the JCPOA.

Iran and the P5+1 – the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China plus Germany finalized the text of the JCPOA in the Austrian capital of Vienna in July 2015.

Under the JCPOA, limits are put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all nuclear-related economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic.

Obama lifts ban on aircraft sale to Iran

President Obama delegated that authority to Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday through a presidential memorandum, a directive similar to an executive order.

The historic decision comes against the backdrop of planned implementation of Iran’s historic nuclear deal with world powers at the weekend.

“They have nearly completed their major nuclear steps, and that’s nothing to gloss over,” US Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said.

He added that the decision would take effect as soon as the nuclear agreement is implemented and international sanctions are lifted on Iran.

“The [nuclear] agreement makes two exceptions: Iran can buy U.S. civilian passenger aircraft, and sell certain crafts – specifically carpets and rugs – to the United States,” USA Today reported.

US sanctions ban the sale of aircraft and parts to Iran. Under an interim nuclear deal in 2013, the West eased the ban on sales of spare parts but selling planes is still prohibited.

Western sanctions are the biggest enemy of Iran’s aviation which has been plagued by a series of air crashes, claiming the lives of hundreds of Iranians.

The nuclear accord reached with Tehran last July has provided Iran with a chance to renew its fleet of commercial aircraft.

Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhundi has said that Iran would need to buy 500 commercial aircraft of various models at a cost of $50 billion.

Iran’s civil aviation fleet consists of 248 aircraft with an average age of 20 years, 100 of which are grounded, he has said.

Aydin Aghdashloo became a Knight in Silence

The French Embassy in Neauphle-le- Chateau Street in  downtown Tehran on Jan. 12, 2016 played host to a ceremony awarding highest of the French government decoration, the Chevalier(Knight) to renowned Iranian Painter and art scholar Aydin Aghdashloo.

French Ambassador to Tehran, Mr. Bruno Foucher placed the National Order of Merit of French Ministry of Culture over the chest of Mr. Aghdashloo. The ceremony was quite modest and attendants were very few. When the 75 years old Aghdashloo was contacted to be informed about awarding of the decoration, he said he prefers the ceremony to be a private and small event and the world famous Iranian painter as usual didn’t want to show off and himself didn’t invite anybody to this ceremony.

Only 10 people including Dariush Shayegan came together at French Embassy. The French Ambassador spoke to the audience about the important position held by Aghdashloo in French culture and importance of his works and placed the Knight Decoration on Mr. Aghdashloo’s chest.

Aghdashloo thanked Mr. Foucher and said he is glad to see that his works have become known outside his home country.

Talking to Iranian Daily Shargh, Mr. Aghdashloo said the Knight Decoration is the highest National Order of Merit award by French government and he is pleased that his works have been appreciated beyond Iranian border and the outside world. He said he has been influenced by French arts and culture like any other painter of the 20th century.

After Aghdashloo’s speech, Shayegan spoke in French of Aghdashloo and his works.

Aghdashloo is very humble artist to an extent that he considers individual exhibition of his works as self flattering and show off and that’s why he asked the French Embassy officials to avoid a large ceremony on his honor.

“Be Prepared for Good News” on Iran Nuclear Issue: Diplomat

“Be prepared for good news; beautiful moments in our beloved country’s history are going to happen,” Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Director General for the Political and International Affairs Hamid Baeidinejad said in a post on his Instagram account.

“I wish you were present in our sessions to witness the dignity and honor of our great nation,” he added in the post.

Also in a post on his Twitter account, Baeidinejad said, “Following intensive negotiations in Vienna, good news on implementation day of the landmark agreement is on the way.”

He had earlier on Thursday noted that the final talks started on Wednesday, and expressed the hope that the remaining outstanding issues on the country’s nuclear energy program will be dealt with by Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) today.

This is the last stage on the long path of Iran’s negotiations with the world powers on its nuclear program, and the day for implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the text of nuclear deal finalized back in July 2015, is looming, he added in a post in his social network account.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi predicted that implementation of a July nuclear deal between Tehran and the Sextet would start by Saturday, after the UN nuclear agency releases its final report.

“The (International Atomic Energy) Agency’s inspectors are supposed to issue their final report on Iran’s honoring of commitments until Friday. I believe the parties will perform their undertakings by Friday and Saturday and (then) the implementation day would be announced,” Araqchi said at the time.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as E3+3 and P5+1) on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion on a 159-page nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.

Afterwards, the 15-memebr United Nations Security Council passed a resolution that endorsed the JCPOA.

According to the UNSC Resolution 2231, all previous UNSC sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program will be terminated when the JCPOA takes effect.

Iran denounces deadly terror attacks in Indonesian capital

On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari voiced sympathy with the families of the victims as well as the Indonesian government and nation in general, expressing hope that such terror attacks would not hamper Indonesians’ will to promote Islam.

“Such terrorist acts, in a country where restraint and moderation are the defining characteristics of its people and has always been one of the frontrunners in the United Nations peacekeeping missions in the world, once again proved that terrorism and extremism have no boundary,” he said.

The Iranian diplomat further urged a tough response to the perpetrators and supporters of acts of terrorism, highlighting the need for a united and global fight against the ominous phenomenon.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Jaberi Ansari emphasized that the Islamic Republic stands by the Indonesian nation and administration in combating terrorism.

Earlier on Thursday, Jakarta was hit by a series of blasts and a gunfight, centered around Thamrin Street, a major shopping and business district near foreign embassies and the United Nations offices in the megacity.

Jakarta police spokesman Colonel Muhammad Iqbal said seven people, including four attackers were killed in Thursday’s incidents.

The Daesh Takfiri terror group has claimed responsibility for the assaults.

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has denounced the attacks and called for calm.

“We condemn these attacks that have disturbed the peace of society and we want to spread this message to the nation and society. I ordered the authorities to catch those responsible for the attacks and even those out there that are involved in this,” he said.

Indonesia has suffered militant attacks in the past and was on high alert over the New Year period after threats from Daesh.
