No More Barrier to Trade with Iran in Euros: Diplomat

“Restrictions on our country’s banking transactions in euros have been removed,” Hamid Baeedinejad, the director general for political and international affairs at Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a post at a social network.

Hailing the developments in Iran’s financial interaction in recent days, the diplomat said India’s move to pay the first installment of its outstanding oil debts to Iran via an account in Turkey demonstrates that restrictions on transferring large sums of money and exchanging that money, for example Indian rupee to euro, have been lifted.

According to a recent report by the Business Standard, Indian refiners have cleared part of their $6.5 billion debt to Iran in euros through Turkey’s Halkbank.

It was the first payment to Iran by India since the removal of anti-Tehran sanctions.

The sanctions were terminated after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 finalized a comprehensive nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and started implementing it on January 16.

Iran Eyes Attracting 2.5 Million Chinese Tourists Annually

Speaking in a televised program, Soltanifar, also a vice-president, said the country seeks to increase the current number of 150,000 Chinese tourists visiting Iran per annum to some 2.5 million visitors.

While Iran needs to prepare the necessary infrastructures for a huge rise in the number of foreign tourists, China has expressed willingness to invest in Iran and construct hotels and restaurants, he added.

Noting that China sends more than 120 million tourists to the other countries every year, Soltanifar said Iran attaches great significance to attracting tourists from the populous country.

The top official had announced earlier that Tehran has drawn up a long-term plan to boost revenues from the tourism industry to $30 billion.

According to a road map, Iran will be hosting 20 million tourists annually by 2025, generating a $30 billion income, Soltanifar said in March.

He noted that the country has the potential to satisfy the needs of all types of tourists, given its diverse climate, the huge number of historical sites, pilgrimage destinations, and great opportunities for health tourism.

According to Soltanifar, the costs of medical treatment in Iran are one fifth of those in European countries.

With a large number of attractive natural and historical sites, Iran is one of the most favorable destinations for tourists.

More foreign tourists are starting to arrive in Iran after a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) came into force and nuclear-related anti-Iran sanctions were terminated in January.

India PM in Tehran to Strike Agreement on Chabahar Port Development

Modi landed in Tehran on Sunday for a two-day visit with Iranian officials. He was welcomed by Iran’s Economy Minister Ali Tayebnia at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport.

He is expected to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Monday morning. The two heads of state will discuss the enhancement of trade, economic, cultural and political cooperation.

During Modi’s stay, Iran and India are set to sign 14 cooperation agreements, including an agreement to develop the southern Iranian port of Chabahar, which lies in the Gulf of Oman.

Modi, who is on his first official visit to Iran, will also meet with the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Meantime, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani will travel to Tehran to join Rouhani and Modi for the signature of the agreement on Chabahar Port.

Iran and India agreed to develop the strategic Chabahar Port in 2003. The project, however, was suspended following the imposition of sanctions against Iran over the country’s nuclear program.

In May 2014, India and Iran signed an MoU to jointly develop the port once the international sanctions against Iran were lifted. Iran received sanctions relief after its nuclear deal with six world powers took effect in January this year.

The Chabahar route will allow Indian goods to reach Afghanistan via the Iranian port of without crossing Pakistan’s territory.

Chabahar is located in the Gulf of Oman on the border with Pakistan. It is Iran’s closest and best access point to the Indian Ocean and Iran has devised serious plans to turn it into a transit hub for immediate access to markets in the northern part of the Indian Ocean and Central Asia.

Iranian dishes excel at making people who have never tried them fall in love at the first bite. The unique combination of spices and flavorings with a wide range of vegetables, herbs, fruit, grains, nuts, meat and most importantly rice only needs the wand of Iranian cuisine to perform magic and leave an explosion of unforgettable tastes in the mouth. The delectable smell, delicious look and perfectly pleasant taste make it almost impossible to resist them. To share the gastronomic delights of Iran, IFP has decided to file a series of mouth-watering recipes for Iranian dishes.

Adas Polo is a tasty Iranian rice dish with lentils. It can be served with different ingredients like dates, raisins and small meat balls or just fried minced beef flavored with spices, saffron or even tomato paste. Some prefer to add in a mixture of them as a layer among the layers of rice and lentils, while others spoon them as a topping onto the mixed rice on the serving dish. Because the recipe can undergo change to fit different tastes, it can also be a winner with vegetarians if the meat is excluded.

Ingredients:

Serves 4

1. Four cups rice (400 grams)

2. Two cups lentils – Soak them for half an hour or so.

3. One cup raisins

4. Two to three large onions – The onions should be peeled and thinly sliced.

5. Two level teaspoons saffron –You will need a pestle and mortar to grind it into powder; the powder should not be prepared much in advance, because it will lose part of its aromatic smell. You had better brew it with a little hot water to have better color and aroma.

6. 300 grams minced beef

7. Two tablespoons tomato paste (optional)

8. Two heaped teaspoons cinnamon

9. Oil

10. Salt, ground black pepper and turmeric to taste

11. Two potatoes – Peel and cut them into round slices.

12. Water

How to cook Adas Polo

1. Rinse the rice with lukewarm water a few times, then soak it for a few hours in water to which four tablespoons of salt has been added. Bring some water to a boil in a pot and then add some salt to it. Drain the salt water from the rice and add the rice to the boiling water. Leave the rice in the boiling water until it is al dente. The rice should be neither too hard nor too soft; it should be firm and slightly chewy. Avoid overcooking the rice. Strain the rice in a colander and then rinse it with water.

2. Parboil the lentils with some salt for less than 30 minutes. Drain water from the lentils and set them aside.

3. Drizzle oil into a pot over a medium heat, so that a thin layer of oil covers the bottom surface of it. When the oil gets hot, turn down the flame and place the round slices of potatoes at the bottom of the pot.

4. In a bowl, mix half a cup of brewed saffron with a small ladle of oil.

5. Add a few spatulas of the rice into the pot over the potato slices and cover it with a layer of lentils. Add a pinch of cinnamon over it and pour a few spoons of saffron and oil on top of them.  Repeat layering until no rice and lentils are left. Wrap the lid in a piece of cloth and put it on the pot. The cloth won’t let the steam find its way out of the pot. It also absorbs drops of water formed as a result of condensation.

To help the steam form, turn up the heat for the first few minutes and then turn the flame down. Be careful not to burn the potato slices, because when the dish is ready, they should be crispy and golden. The mixed rice usually takes about an hour over a low flame to be cooked.

6. Fry the onions in a pan with salt, ground black pepper and turmeric until they turn golden brown. Add in the minced beef and fry it until it turns brown. Add three spoons of brewed saffron to it. The original recipe does not contain tomato paste, yet if you like, you can add it to the mixture and fry it until it turns deep red. Add some water to it and let it simmer until the meat is cooked. The final sauce should be thick.

7. Pour some oil in another pan and sauté the raisins over a low heat with three spoons of brewed saffron and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Remove it after a few minutes; it does not need to be fried.

8. Place the mixed rice on your serving dish and top it with the sauce and the raisins. You can serve the crispy potato slices as a side dish with your Adas Polo.

Saudi Arabia’s Talks of Plan B for Syria Are Made in the Wrong Time

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir’s recent remarks about the “Plan B” are made in the wrong time, as it might face strong opposition by both Russia and the US.

Jubeir said on Tuesday, May 17, that if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad did not abide with efforts to establish a truce across Syria country, alternatives would need to be looked at.

“We believe we should have moved to a ‘Plan B’ a long time ago,” Jubeir told reporters after a meeting of foreign governments in Vienna.

According to a report by Al Alam News Network, as translated by IFP, the plan Jubeir is talking about includes the arming of radical Syrian opposition groups with anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles.

The plan can face the strong opposition of the US and angry reaction of Russia. It is also likely that Russia arms the Syrian army with S-300 missile defense system to help them counter American, Saudi, and Turkish aircraft. Moscow may also restart “exclusive” airstrikes against armed opposition groups, and this would imply a great and deeper role for Russia in the Syrian crisis.

Jubeir’s remarks are surprising at this particular juncture, because Riyadh has been talking about its Plan B since five years ago; why should Al Saud raise it again under the current circumstances? Why didn’t such a plan come into effect when Saudi media claimed Syrian army was bombarding Aleppo and its residents?

All these remarks about the Plan B are actually aimed at misleading and deceiving the Syrian nation, not any more or less. Saudi Arabia is deeply involved in complicated cases ranging from the worsening security issues inside the country to the ongoing war in Yemen and the US lawsuit against Riyadh over its role in 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Iranian Police Seize Huge Haul of Drugs in Southeastern Province

Drugs-1

Speaking to reporters in Zahedan, the province’s capital, Brigadier General Hossein Rahimi said that, after receiving information about a major drug ring in the city of Iranshahr involved in smuggling various kinds of illicit drugs, specialized police forces were deployed to deal with the smugglers.

In an operation on Friday night, the forces managed to detect two vehicles belonging to the smugglers and chased them near Iranshahr, he said.

After a while, the traffickers started shooting at police, the commander said, adding that they soon fled the scene after realizing they could not confront the forces.

General Rahimi went on to say that 910 kg of opium were seized from the smugglers’ vehicles in the operation.

In recent decades, Iran has been hit by drug trafficking, mainly because of its 936-kilometer shared border with Afghanistan, which produces more than 90% of the world’s opium.

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the Islamic Republic is netting eight times more opium and three times more heroin than all other countries in the world combined.

The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 3,700 Iranian police officers over the past 30 years.

2 New Pharmaceutical Products Produced per Month under Rouhani’s Tenure

Measures Adopted to Boost Iran’s Medical Infrastructure amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Here’s IFP’s translation of IRNA’s report on a ceremony held in Tehran on Saturday to introduce the country’s achievements in pharmaceutical industry.

Under the incumbent government, more than 60 new pharmaceutical products have been produced so far, Qazizadeh Hashemi said in an address to the ceremony.

If the Health Ministry receives further support, Iran can be more successful in this regard, he vowed.

The value of drugs imported to Iran was $1.35bn in 2012, but it was decreased to less than $1bn in 2014, the Iranian minister said, adding that the 57% share of domestic drugs has also grown to more than 70%.

There were 300 types of drugs no one could find in Iran, but the number is now reduced to less than 30, he went on to say.

He also noted that the export of Iranian pharmaceuticals has also doubled under Rouhani’s tenure

“In the field of drugs export to regional countries, Iran has strong rivals like Turkey and Jordan, which have made huge investment in the field,” Qazizadeh Hashemi said.

During the ceremony, several drugs for such diseases as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), mental illnesses, and cancer were unveiled.
