Architecture booms as Iran opens its doors to the world

Architecture-Iran (7)

Iran is “on the verge of a new era for architecture” according to local architects, as change sweeps through the Islamic republic following the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

An expanding economy, growing demand for contemporary lifestyles and booming investment in tourist infrastructure are combining to create new opportunities for professionals in the once isolated nation.

“Iran is opening its doors to the world,” Reza Mafakher of Iran-based firm Xema architects told Dezeen, citing the election of reformist president Hassan Rouhani in 2013 and the lifting of international sanctions in 2016 as key drivers of change.

After that, “the projects referred to our firm were different both in terms of scale and function,” Mafakher said. “This represents the beginning of a boom in the industry,” he added. “We believe that we are on the verge of a new era for Iran and its architecture.”

Persian Gulf Marine Tourism: Neglected Opportunities

13_Marine

Despite covering most of the northern coasts of the Persian Gulf (not to mention a fair portion of the Sea of Oman), Iran has only just started to tap into its potential for marine tourism, hoping to claim a stake in the lucrative marine tourism sector.
After months of negotiations, Iranian officials launched a cruise shipping line between Khasab in Oman and Qeshm Island earlier this year for Omani tourists, allowing them visa-free entry to the key Persian Gulf Island, CHTN reported.
The emirate of Dubai in the UAE aims to attract over 1 million marine tourists by 2020. According to local officials, all relevant bodies are coordinated to help facilitate the entry of tourists via cruise ships. It has so far increased the number of its cruise ships by 22%, which has helped increase the number of sea passengers by a whopping 33% last year to 500,000.
Dubai’s Port Rashid is the number one cruise terminal in the MENA region, in terms of traffic and infrastructure, according to Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of the emirate’s Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation.
“Our goal now is to go all out and make the passenger-friendly facility the best in the world. To that end, we have joined hands with all authorities present at the port, including Dubai Customs, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, and Dubai Police to deliver expedited, top-notch services to cruise tourists,” he said.
Qatar is also preparing to take full advantage of Iran’s inertia and has set the goal of making its capital, Doha, a key marine destination in the Persian Gulf by mid-2017.
It is also adding 30 new cruise ships to its small fleet this winter, which means a 300% growth in the tiny Arab nation’s fleet of cruise ships.

He has asked people on his social media page to send him video footage of street children who show musical skill and promise, so that he can help them improve their talent with the necessary training and build a career, Honaronline reported.

“After seeing the clips, we will identify the talented children and provide them advanced training so that they can have a secure professional future,” Heydari said. The Tehran Municipality is cooperating in the project.

Every year, the World Day Against Child Labour is observed on June 12. According to the World Bank, there are 1.7 million children in forced labour in Iran (reportedly mostly Afghans), and 168 million worldwide.

The new round of negotiations between Iran and Armenia was held on the morning of June 15 in Tehran, aiming to promote research activities in energy and electricity fields between Armenia’s Scientific Research Institute of Energy (SRIE) and Iran’s Niroo Research Institute (NRI).

On the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was inked last year between SRIE and NRI, it was agreed to develop technical cooperation particularly in the field of power industry equipment, including 10 kV network parameters, high flow measurement, and the commercialization of research results, as well as undertaking joint ventures.

Regarding the readiness of Armenia’s SRIE to collaborate with in Iran in these areas, the new round of talks was held today in Tehran.

Speaking on the sidelines of the meetings, Head of Iran’s Niroo Research Institute (NRI) Mohammad Sadegh Ghazizadeh pointed to the need for launching joint projects by exploiting Armenia’s potentials and its position in Eurasia for joint production as well as exports to global markets. “A preliminary agreement has been reached to establish a production line for certain electrical goods.”

An MoU was exchanged between SRIE of Armenia and Iran’s NRI last year on the sidelines of the 13th Session of the Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation between Iran and Armenia headed by Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian.

The joint session was hosted by Iran, focusing on increasing mutual economic and industrial activities, exchange of technical and engineering services as well as energy exchange.

In a statement on Wednesday, the IRGC provincial base said Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport by the IRGC intelligence forces and taken to the city of Kerman.

According to the statement, a series of extensive intelligence operations, including monitoring of cyberspace, led to the arrest of Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a main ringleader of institutes affiliated with foreign intelligence agencies who had carried out various operations to serve the hostile purposes of the enemies of the Establishment.

Employed by foreign media and intelligence services, she had been involved in planning and performing media and cyber projects with the purpose of a “soft overthrow” of the Islamic Republic’s Establishment, the statement added.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe “is a main ringleader of hostile institutions who had been involved in criminal activities over the past years under the auspices of foreign governments’ media and espionage services,” it added.

It also noted that Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been kept in a suite at Kerman prison and had regular telephone contact with her family.

According to the statement, her case has been sent to Tehran for judicial processes, while the IRGC intelligence agents are conducting supplementary investigations.

Iraqi FM Commends Iran’s General Soleimani for Advisory Help

In a televised speech, Jaafari said Baghdad praised General Soleimani’s role, describing him as an advisor with respectable views who is always ready for self-sacrifice. As regards Iran’s assistance to Iraq, the top diplomat said his country is ready for any cooperation that respects Iraq’s sovereignty.

Last week, Jaafari made it clear that General Soleimani is helping Iraqi forces in the fight against Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists at the request of Baghdad. His comments came after Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir accused Iran of military presence in Iraq and of interfering in the internal affairs of other regional countries.

In reaction, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari rejected the allegations, stressing that Iran’s advisory mission in Iraq is underway at the request of Baghdad.

Iran, a close ally of Iraq, has been supporting the Arab nation in the fight against ISIS since the terrorist group invaded Iraq in summer 2014.

Iran MPs Consider Suing Canada Over Asset Seizure

Iran's Parliament

Canada’s Ontario Superior Court of Justice ordered last Thursday, June 9, that $13m in non-diplomatic Iranian assets be handed over to a number of families.

The decision was similar to the US Supreme Court’s ruling in April to hand over about $2bn of Iran’s frozen assets to the American families of those  killed in a 1983 bombing and other attacks.

“There is an atmosphere of Iranophobia in America which doesn’t want the goals of the JCPOA to materialize in a peaceful environment,” Iranian MP Alireza Rahimi said on Wednesday. “Court rulings against our assets under various pretexts are in line with efforts to portray a totally insecure atmosphere after the JCPOA and debase the opportunity which has been created.”

Rahimi said, “We must be careful that technical and legal issues do not mix with politics and that legal issues are not overshadowed by politics.”

“The Iranian government must put taking legal measures on the agenda, in proportion to the files which are opened against us, in order to defend the obvious rights of the people.”

The MP, who is a member of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said that the necessary coordination has been made between the Presidential Office and the Foreign Ministry to take legal action.

“At the moment, all parts of the establishment are ready for the legal pursuit of these issues,” Rahimi added.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the ruling, which comes as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government seeks to restore diplomatic relations with Iran.

“The move by the Canadian government contradicts claims about the normalization of relations between the two countries, and compensation for the extremist policies of the country’s former government,” Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari said last Saturday.

Iran has denied any role in the attacks on which US and Canadian courts have based their cases to appropriate the country’s frozen assets.

Why Is Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s US Visit Important?

Here’s IFP’s translation of a report by Alef on why the powerful Saudi prince’s visit to the US is important. We have also added certain information to the report from other sources.

Saudi Arabia’s powerful deputy crown prince flew to the United States on Monday June 13 for meetings with US President Obama and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

He arrived in Washington on Tuesday morning and was welcomed by Secretary of State John Kerry.

The visit of bin Salman, whose powers include his role as Defence Minister, comes amid a diplomatic row with the United Nations and policy differences with the United States over the war in Syria and relations with Iran.

A diplomatic fight, usually kept behind closed doors, exploded in public Thursday, June 9, as the UN’s Ban accused Saudi Arabia and its military allies of placing “undue pressure” on the international organization.

Last month, the Saudi-led coalition was put on a blacklist over its role in the deaths of children in Yemen. The UN report, which annually shames the worst perpetrators, announced that the coalition was responsible for 60% of the 1,953 children recorded as killed or maimed in the conflict in 2015.

A source told CNN earlier last week that the Saudis applied full court pressure with a threat to cut off ties with the UN if the organization did not remove the country from the blacklist. The UN source said that a threat of a “total rupture” had been made, placing hundreds of millions of dollars to UN humanitarian agencies in doubt.

It seems like the Saudi Defence Minister’s meeting with Ban at this particular juncture might lead to further controversy.

Based on a Reuters report, the Saudi royal court also announced in a statement late on Sunday, June 12, that the prince would discuss ways of strengthening relations with the United States, which have cooled under Obama’s presidency.

Riyadh has been angry at Washington over the recent détente between the US and Saudi Arabia’s arch-rival Iran, after the implementation of a nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Saudis have also been critical of what they see as foot-dragging by Washington over efforts to end the conflict in Syria by ousting President Bashar al-Assad. Riyadh’s push for his overthrow comes as Washington is doing its best to end the crisis first.

Saudi Arabia has also urged Obama to take a tougher stance on what Riyadh sees as Iranian meddling in the affairs of Arab states. Iran denies such interference.

The Saudis are also planning to put Iran in a critical economic and political situation, as Saudi-led military operations in neighbouring Yemen have put Riyadh in difficult conditions.

A US Congress bill relating to Riyadh’s role in 9/11, and subsequent reports by American media, calling Saudi Arabia “Royal Scum”, has also exacerbated the tension.

However, in a move to demonstrate US goodwill one day before bin Salman’s visit, CIA Director John Brennan announced that Saudi Arabia will be absolved of any responsibility for the 9/11 attacks based on 28 classified pages of a congressional report into the incident.

He noted that there is no evidence that proves Riyadh’s role in the incident, and tried to show Washington’s preparedness to close the case.

Meanwhile, American media reports claimed that Omar Mateen, the guy who attacked a gay nightclub in Florida’s Orlando and killed at least 50, had visited Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Just one day after the deadly shooting, US Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton issued a pointed warning to US allies in the Middle East, saying Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar must stop supporting extremism.

Clinton’s remarks came as bin Salman declared before the beginning of his trip that Riyadh had funded as much as 20% of the money that Clinton has spent on courting voters.

“Saudi Arabia always has sponsored both the Republican and Democratic Party of America,” said Mohammed.

He suggested that the generous contribution had been made to fight opposition to the presidency of the former US Secretary of State, who has surpassed the 2,383 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic Party nomination.

These are among the major developments that could have influence on bin Salman’s US visit and his possible meetings with high-ranking US officials.

Prince Mohammed will meet with top State Department and Pentagon officials as he promotes plans to overhaul the Saudi economy, the world’s biggest oil exporter. He will also travel to California for meetings with Silicon Valley executives.

Will Obama Meet bin Salman?

It was billed by Riyadh’s state media as a trip for Saudi Arabia’s powerful deputy crown prince to meet with President Obama and other senior US officials. Now that Prince Mohammed has arrived in Washington, however, it’s still unclear if the president or any White House officials will meet with him, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

“No confirmation at this time for any WH meetings,” White House spokesperson Dew Tiantawach told Foreign Policy.

The absence of any scheduled meetings with even National Security Adviser Susan Rice is fuelling speculation among Gulf experts about a diplomatic snub. It comes amid sharp policy differences between Washington and Riyadh, and unease among US officials about overplaying alliances with the 30-year-old prince, who some view as being locked in a power struggle with the older Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Nayef.

“Very unusual for the Saudis to come out saying he is meeting with Obama and the White House not confirming it,” said David Ottaway, a Saudi expert at the Wilson Centre in Washington. “They certainly knew he was coming.”

Whatever the case, officials will have much to discuss with the ongoing wars in Yemen and Syria and the expected release of 28 redacted pages of congressional inquiry into 9/11 that some have said accuse Saudi officials of involvement in those attacks.

A Defence Department official told Foreign Policy that Prince Mohammed would meet with senior Pentagon officials this week. The prince met with Secretary of State Kerry on Monday evening. A source close to the Saudis said the prince will hold meetings with congressional leaders in both parties this week and will also meet with Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Bin Salman is the son of Saudi King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud Salman. An aggressive publicity hound and inspirational figure for many Saudi youths, the Defence Minister came to prominence in 2015 as the architect of Riyadh’s military campaign against the Houthi Ansarullah Movement in Yemen.

In a sign of the Obama administration’s concerns over the civilian death toll in the Yemen conflict, the White House recently blocked the transfer of cluster bombs to Riyadh, citing reports of their use in civilian areas.

MP Praises Petroleum Ministry for Regaining Market Share

Iranian Parliament

Speaking at an open session in the Parliament on Tuesday June 14, Ahmadi said every economy can reach an international level when it can export items to global markets. “Presence in international markets can have an effect on political, social and cultural grounds as well.”

He said that the export of oil can be seen as the top economic concern for Iran and that the sanctions had caused some trouble in that sector.

He said Iran’s share in world’s oil demand fell from 3.5% in 2003 to 1.26% in 2012 because of the sanctions.

“We must be thankful to Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh and his colleagues for bringing Iran’s oil exports up to 2.2m bpd by the end of the summer.”
