Iranian Police Seize 4.6 Tons of Narcotics in Southern Province

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Brigadier General Azizollah Maleki pointed to several major operations by his forces in the province, saying that following intelligence operations over the past week, 63 drug smugglers were identified and arrested.

During the operations, the security forces seized 4608 kilograms of various types of illicit drugs, including 3218 kg of opium, he noted.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug trafficking over the past three decades.

The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past 34 years.

Iran Condemns US Airstrike on Syrian Troops

Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the US-led aerial bombardment of Syrian army forces near the city of Deir ez-Zor, describing such attack as a clear sign of American support for the terrorist groups in the Arab country.

In comments on Sunday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said US-led bombing of Syrian forces and a subsequent offensive by the ISIS demonstrates that terrorist groups in Syria benefit from the backing of the US.

US-led coalition jets on Saturday bombed Syrian government forces’ positions near the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor, killing more than 90 troops and paving the way for ISIS militants.

The Iranian spokesman further slammed the airstrike as a violation of Syria’s independence and sovereignty, noting that US attacks are even risking the ceasefire and propping up the group which has been explicitly branded as a terrorist one in the United Nations Security Council resolutions, as reported by Tasnim.

Thus, he added, such US action was in contradiction to the international regulations and to the commitments of the UN members, particularly a Security Council member.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the international adviser to Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, also said US airstrikes on Syrian government forces who are fighting terrorists highlight Washington’s true intentions.

“We strongly denounce the US measures, and do not believe that it was a military mistake,” said Amir-Abdollahian on Sunday during a meeting with Syria’s Ambassador to Tehran, Adnan Hassan Mahmoud.

The US will do anything to weaken Syria’s morale and boost terrorist groups, he added.

“The presence of US soldiers in Syria violates international laws and has not been coordinated with the Syrian government,” he added, as reported by Press TV.

He went on to stress that Washington’s attack on the Syrian army also violated a Russia-US brokered ceasefire in Syria. “Attacking an army which is battling terrorism means backstabbing and helping ISIS,” he noted.

Over 90 Syrian soldiers were killed and 100 injured in the airstrikes by the US-led coalition. Russia said the attacks were performed by two F-16 fighter jets and two A-10 support aircraft.

An unnamed US military official has also said that the bombings in Deir ez-Zor were carried out using US intelligence, which was being gathered for days.

Iran Comes 15th in Rio Paralympics Medal Standings

Iranian national sitting volleyball team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Paralympic Games final.

The Persians beat their arch rival 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15) at the Riocentro – Pavilion 6 to win their sixth Paralympics medal.

The victory marked Iran’s first Paralympic gold since Beijing 2008, when Iran last beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final.

This was the eighth gold medal won by Iranian athletes in Rio Paralympics, helping Iran finish 15th in the event after winning 8 gold, 9 silvers and 7 bronze medals.

China once again dominated the global sporting arena after securing a total of 239 medals from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

China ranked first on the final medal tally after winning 107 gold, 81 silver and 51 bronze medals from the 11-day sporting event that concluded Sunday in Brazil.

The Chinese Paralympic Team also topped the 2012 London Paralympic Games with a total of 231 medals. This year, China deployed a delegation of 308 Paralympic athletes, the biggest from the 160 nations that participated in the recently-concluded Paralympic Games.

The Great Britain came second with a total of 147 medals, 64 of which are gold, 39 are silver and 44 are bronze.

Paralympics Closing Ceremony: One Minute Silence Held in Memory of Golbarnezhad

Tributes were paid to Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad, who died on Saturday, at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games closing ceremony.

The prestigious event was brought to a close inside a packed Maracana Stadium on Sunday evening.

Sir Philip Craven, International Paralympic Committee president, said the movement was “united in grief”.

“Tonight is a celebration of the last 12 days of sport but it’s also a very sombre occasion following Saturday’s extremely tragic events,” Craven said, upon opening his speech.

“The passing of Bahman Golbarnezhad has affected us all and left the whole Paralympic movement united in grief.”

Cyclist Golbarnezhad’s death is the first in competition at a summer Olympics or Paralympics since the death of Danish cyclist Knud Enemark Jensen in the 100km team time trial at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

As well as the closing ceremony tribute, flags were lowered to half-mast as Iran won gold on Sunday afternoon in the sitting volleyball gold-medal match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, one of the final events of the Games.

Flags have also been lowered around the Paralympic village.

An investigation into the crash has begun, the IPC said.

Iranian Cyclist Golbarnezhad Dies after Rio Paralympic Road Race Crash

Bahman Golbarnezhad, from Shiraz, was treated at the scene of the accident before being taken to a local hospital. Iran’s NPC later announced he had died. He was 48.

The road races began at Pontal and included the Grumari circuit incorporated in the Rio Olympics road races.

The Vista Chinesa circuit – which included a treacherous descent where Annemiek van Vleuten of the Netherlands crashed into the curb, sustaining heavy concussion during the Olympics in August – was not part of the Paralympic course, The Guardian reported.

Golbarnezhad was 14th in the time-trial on Wednesday and also competed at the London 2012 Paralympics. He was Iran’s sole cyclist at the Rio Games.

Iran’s NPC said in a statement, “Regretfully, The Islamic Republic of Iran’s NPC announces that Mr. Bahman Golbarnezhad, passed away because of his accident during the competition.”

The athlete’s family in Iran were informed and the Iranian team was brought together in the athletes’ village and told of the sad news.

Sir Philip Carven, the International Paralympic Committee president, said, “The Paralympic family is united in grief at this horrendous tragedy which casts a shadow over what have been great Paralympic Games here in Rio.”

Carlos Nuzman, president of Rio 2016, said, “This is very sad news for sport and for the Paralympic movement. Our hearts and prayers are with Bahman’s family, his team-mates and all the people of Iran.”

An investigation into the accident has been launched.

Golbarnezhad Had Once Lost His Leg, and Now Loses His Life, for Iran

Born in 1968 in Iran’s southwestern city of Abadan, Golbarnezhad lost one of his legs during the Iraqi imposed war in 1988, according to a report by IRNA, as translated by IFP.

He first started weight-lifting and during his career, he won 13 gold and one silver medals in world competitions.

According to Iran’s NPC, the country’s flag will be flown at half-mast on Sunday, September 18, and the participants of the closing ceremony will remain silent for one minute in memory of the Iranian athlete.

Iranian President Urges Strong Unity among Independent States

On the sidelines of the 17th NAM summit on Margarita Island, Venezuela, Rouhani sat down for talks with Bolivian President Evo Morales on Saturday to discuss the enhancement of Tehran-Sucre ties in different areas.

“There is no limit to the expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tehran and Bolivia. The strengthening of such ties will be in line with the interests of both nations,” Rouhani said.

He further emphasized the need for all independent nations to stand united in efforts to pursue their common objectives, saying the Islamic Republic welcomes closer relations with Latin American states, especially Bolivia.

The Iranian chief executive expressed Tehran’s readiness to help speed up Bolivia’s economic development plans, calling for increased mutual investment and business cooperation, particularly in the banking sector.

Morales, in turn, hailed Iran’s successful economic projects in Bolivia, saying Sucre wants an even more active participation of Iranian firms in the country.

During his stay, Rouhani also met with Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa on Margarita Island, where the two senior officials emphasized the need for enhanced bilateral ties in all spheres.

Rouhani said Iran and Ecuador have taken common positions on different issues of regional and international significance, adding that such commonalities necessitate closer relations between the two nations in various fields.

The lifting of anti-Tehran sanctions as part of last July’s deal on the Iranian nuclear issue could serve as a good opportunity for Tehran and Quito to strengthen their relations.

“We are fully prepared to offer our experience and capabilities in the fields of science, technology and energy to our friend Ecuador,” said Rouhani, adding, “In order to create dynamism in relations between the two countries, especially in private sectors, the expansion of banking ties is of great significance.”

Correa, for his part, said his country is determined to further bolster bilateral ties with the Islamic Republic, saying the opportunity created by the removal of anti-Iran bans must be seized to that effect.

‘Iran-India Ties Benefit Region’

In a separate meeting, Rouhani exchanged views with Indian Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari on the promotion of Tehran-New Delhi economic cooperation.

The Iranian president said the enhancement of bilateral relations will be in the interests of both nations as well as the entire region, which is suffering from extremism and terror threats.

The Indian official also hailed “lasting” relations between the two sides, describing a recent visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Iran as a new chapter in Tehran-New Delhi ties.

Another meeting also took place between the Iranian chief executive and Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra.

Rouhani said the Iranian and Algerian nations have stood together during hard times, and must now work to broaden their economic relations after the lifting of nuclear-related embargoes against the Islamic Republic.

Lamamra also delivered a message from Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to Rouhani.

The top diplomat said Iran-Algeria ties have been based on independence, adding that Algiers is resolved to further promote brotherly relations with Tehran.

On Saturday, the Iranian president addressed the opening ceremony of the NAM summit. He officially submitted the body’s rotating presidency for three years to his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro and expressed Iran’s support for him.

The NAM meeting brought together heads of state and delegates from all the 120 member countries to discuss key regional and international issues.

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states and 21 observer countries, represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members. It is regarded as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.

Iran Picks Asghar Farhadi’s ‘The Salesman’ for 2017 Academy Awards

A board comprising nine Iranian directors and producers chose Farhadi’s drama on Saturday to represent Iran in next year’s Oscars.

After comprehensive deliberations and further discussions on the five shortlisted films, a strong majority of the board chose The Salesman (titled Foroushandeh in Persian) to compete in Best Foreign Language film in 2017 Oscars, the spokesman for the board, Amir Esfandiari said.

He expressed hope the movie would well represent Iran’s high cinematic capacities in the prestigious world competition.

The Salesman, which premiered in Iran on August 31, won two prizes in the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Lead protagonist Shahab Hosseini won a Palme d’Or for best actor and Farhadi scooped the best screenplay award during the 69th edition of the festival.

The movie is a taut moral drama about a married couple who are acting in Death of a Salesman, a play by Arthur Miller.

In 2012, Farhadi’s A Separation won Iran’s first Oscar for best foreign film.

Iran Rejects Saudi Claim on Yemen Arms Transfer

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN), in a statement released on Saturday, categorically rejected the claim made in a September 14 letter by Saudi Arabia to the UN Security Council concerning the alleged transfer of weapons to the Yemeni Houthi Ansarullah fighters and the violation of UN Resolution 2216 by Iran.

“Unsubstantiated claims can be seen in Saudi Arabia’s letter, claims that no impartial body has ever been able to prove,” the Iranian mission’s statement read.

“This is while Saudi Arabia has for over a year and a half been involved in a full-scale, unequal war — which is devoid of logic — against the people of Yemen and has perpetrated undeniable crimes against the country’s defenseless civilians, children and women,” the statement read.

“Saudi Arabia, which, while destroying Yemen’s infrastructure, has no compunction about attacking hospitals and schools, is accusing Iran of breaching international resolutions while it (Riyadh) has violated international rules and civilian rights on numerous occasions based on documented reports,” the statement further read.

The Iranian UN mission said it was surprising that Saudi Arabia was complaining to the Security Council about the use of weapons in Yemen while it has itself spent tens of billions of dollars on the purchase of munitions to be used against the people of Yemen.

It said Iran does not believe there is a military solution to the Yemeni crisis and “has always demanded an end to hostilities and disagreements [there] through dialog and recourse to lawful and peaceful mechanisms.”

Saudi Arabia has been pounding Yemen since March 2015, with the UN putting the death toll in the war at about 10,000. The offensive was launched to reinstate Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a Saudi ally who has resigned as Yemen’s president.

A recent survey by a group of academics and human rights activists revealed that Saudi Arabia targeted 3,158 non-military sites in Yemen between March 2015 and the end of August this year.

The findings, published by The Guardian on Friday, further revealed that there were 942 air raids on residential areas, 114 on markets, 34 on mosques, 147 on school buildings, 26 on universities and 378 on transport sites during the mentioned period.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen Jamie McGoldrick said last month that the death toll from the Saudi military aggression could rise even further as some areas had no medical facilities, and that people were often buried without any official record being made.

Saddam Hussein Revealed Phobia of Iran at the Gallows

It is interesting yet appalling to know that the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s final words before his execution in December 30, 2006, were about a secret fear of Iran.

According to a report by Al Alam News Network, as translated by IFP, Mowaffak al-Rubaie, Iraq’s former National Security Adviser, said in an interview with Iraq’s Asia TV that Saddam was suffering from an illusion of Iranophobia.

Al-Rubaie, who was accompanying Saddam from the investigation and interrogation stages up until his final moments before execution, noted that, “When they handed over Saddam to me and I was taking him to the judge so that he would hear his charges, I heard Saddam reciting these words over and over again: down with Iran…down with the Magi Iranians.

“When Saddam was asked about why he prevented the progress of Iraq with war and bloodshed, he said he wanted it [Iraq’s progress], but Iran did not let that happen!”

According to al-Rubaie, Saddam had a fear even of Iran’s name inasmuch as he would blame Iran even if two fish had a fight in an aquarium. He believed that Iranians are the descendants of the magi and fire worshipers.

“Since he knew the execution ceremony was being videotaped and probably broadcasted after his death, he was repeatedly cursing Iran,” he stressed.

He said Saddam was a skilful actor as life was like a play in the theatre for him.

“Even in the final moments of his life, Saddam pretended to be brave so much so that when he entered the execution room, the moment he clapped eyes on the noose, turned to the doctor and said, ‘This is for a man!’”

Iran’s Leader Okays Allocation of €1 Billion to Fight COVID-19

The pardon was granted at the request of the country’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani on the occasion of great Muslim festivals of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadeer.

The Eid al-Adha is one of Islam’s holiest festivals celebrated annually around the world and an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries.

Eid al-Ghadeer is also a festive day observed by Shiite Muslims on the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar to commemorate the appointment of Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) by the Prophet Mohammad (PUBH) as his immediate successor.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Supreme Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to certain types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery and embezzlement.
