Kofi Annan Calls on Iran to Retain Rafsanjani’s Pragmatic Approach

rafsanjani

“Iran has lost one of its most influential leaders and a strong voice for reform and for the improvement of regional relations,” said Annan, who also chairs The Elders, an international non-governmental organisation of public figures noted as elder statesmen, peace activists, and human rights advocates.

“President Rafsanjani understood that a rapprochement between the main leaders of Sunni and Shia Islam is crucial for international stability. I hope his pragmatic approach will be continued for the benefit of the people of Iran and the region,” he added in his message.

According to a report by IFP, The Elders also expressed their condolences at the death of Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the former President of Iran who passed away at the age of 82.

In their statement, The Elders said President Rafsanjani was a key figure in Iran’s political life since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, becoming a forceful advocate for domestic political reform and wider engagement with the international community – including strong support for the P5+1 nuclear agreement concluded in 2015.

The Elders met President Rafsanjani during their visit to Iran in January 2014, when they discussed regional conflicts and wider geopolitical questions.

Martti Ahtisaari, an Elder and international conflict mediator, said, “I am saddened to hear of the death of President Rafsanjani. When he met the Elders’ delegation in 2014, we held fruitful discussions and he gave us good advice on regional security issues, the need to address root causes of conflict, and the importance of negotiating in good faith to solve complex geopolitical issues.”

“It is crucial that Iran, regional powers and all parties to the nuclear agreement maintain their commitment to peace and security in the months ahead,” Ahtisaari added.

The Elders were brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007. They describe themselves as “independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights”.

The goal Mandela set for the Elders was to use their “almost 1,000 years of collective experience” to work on solutions for seemingly insurmountable problems such as climate change, HIV/AIDS, and poverty, as well as to “use their political independence to help resolve some of the world’s most intractable conflicts”.

Muslim World Deprived of an Astute Politician: Nigerian President

Muhammadu Buhari

In his letter to President Hassan Rouhani, Buhari condoled the demise of Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Expressing his great sorrow at the tragic loss, he demanded President Rouhani to convey his heartfelt condolences and grief as well as those of the Nigerians to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei — “who lost a confident and kind friend following the sad incident” — Iranian statesmen, and the family of the country’s late ex-president [Ayatollah Rafsanjani].

According to a report by IFP, the full text of the message is as follows:

To His Excellency Dr. Hassan Rouhani

President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you

Last Sunday, I received the shocking and distressing news of the passing away of Mr Hashemi Rafsanjani, Iran’s esteemed ex-president and head of the Expediency Council, at the age of 82.

Your Excellency, please accept my personal condolences over the great loss. The ex-president was a great and influential politician. An architect of Iran’s Islamic Revolution and one of the most important and significant leaders of the country in the post-Revolution era, Mr Rafsanjani played a pivotal role in governing the Islamic Republic of Iran. At present, his loss has created a vacuum in Iran’s political and social atmosphere, the filling of which would be a herculean task. Iran lost a revolutionary figure and the Muslim world an astute politician.

Although he has gone, his memory, the services he provided his compatriots with and his lifetime achievements will be remembered for a long time.

Among the indispensable roles Ayatollah Rafsanjani played in laying the foundations of modern Iran as well as his accomplishments were taking part in the demonstrations of June 5, 1963 in Tehran, performing a significant role in many of the attainments of Iran’s revolutionary government, serving as the speaker of Iran’s first Parliament after the Islamic Revolution, being the country’s president for eight fruitful years, presiding over the country’s Assembly of Experts and chairing the Expediency Council.

His absence would be absolutely bitter and agonizing. I hope that god has mercy on his soul.

Please convey my heartfelt condolences and grief, as well as those of the Nigerians, to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei — who has lost a confident and kind friend following the sad incident — Iranian statesmen and the family of the country’s late ex-president [Ayatollah Rafsanjani].

I supplicate God to bestow great patience to his household to endure the agony of this excruciating loss.

Miankaleh: A Heavenly Sanctuary in Iran

Miankaleh

Miankaleh, a peninsula in northern Iran, is named “the heaven of birds” because of its rich nutrition resources for more than 260 species of migratory and native birds.

According to a Farsi report by Mehr, this wildlife sanctuary is one of the most important protected areas in Iran.

MiankalehThe Hyrcanian tiger, the largest Iranian cat, whose name is mentioned in many history books, lived in this peninsula up to less than one and a half century ago.

The wetland of Miankaleh consists of three habitat types. Every year, hundreds of thousands of birds from northern latitudes of Caspian Sea come to Miankaleh during autumn and winter. This wetland is also a prominent habitat of Caspian Sea’s cartilaginous and bony fish.

The diversity of species in Miankaleh attracts thousands of domestic and foreign visitors to this region every year.

Newspapers on Saturday covered the landing of a brand new plane Iran had purchased from Airbus, and the end of 39 years of sanctions against Iran’s aviation industry. Reformist and pro-government papers described it as a victory for Iran and an achievement of nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, but conservatives referred to the plane as a second-hand and rented one, and slammed the government for humiliating the Iranian nation through their overexcitement.

Another top story was President Hassan Rouhani and other officials’ remarks about the late former president Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

The differing comments made by US President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet members about JCPOA [nuclear deal] also received great coverage.

Iran Will Never Renegotiate Nuclear Deal with World Powers: Deputy FM

Speaking in his Senate confirmation hearing, Tillerson said on Wednesday he would recommend a “full review” of the nuclear deal with Iran, but he did not call for an outright rejection of the 2015 accord.

In reply, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for American and European Affairs Majid Takht Ravanchi told reporters in Tehran on Friday that Iran “has many times reiterated that the JCPOA dossier will not open again at any rate.”

Iran will not allow the agreement to be renegotiated and this is the stance of all other member states to the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany), he noted.

The Iranian diplomat further pointed to a recent session of the JCPOA Joint Commission – a group tasked with monitoring commitments to JCPOA – saying that the sessions was held at the request of Iran to deal with the US failure to fulfill its obligations under the deal over the past year.

The meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission took place on Tuesday in Vienna, marking the first year of implementation of the deal.

While the JCPOA, a 159-page nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 came into force in January 2016, some Iranian officials still complain about the US failure to fully implement the accord.

In March 2016, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said Americans have yet to fulfill what they were supposed to do as per the nuclear deal.

Iran still has problems in its banking transactions or in restoring its frozen assets, because Western countries and those involved in such processes are afraid of Americans, the Leader said at the time, criticizing the US for its moves to prevent Iran from taking advantage of the sanctions removal.

Iran, Russia, Turkey Discuss Syrian Crisis ahead of Astana Meeting

Ansari arrived in the Russian capital Moscow on Friday and first held a meeting with the Russian deputy foreign minister and special presidential envoy for the Middle East and North Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov, to discuss the latest developments on the Syrian crisis and coordinate upcoming peace talks due to be held in the Kazakh capital Astana later this month.

“The two diplomats stressed the importance of maintaining close dialogue between Moscow and Tehran on the Syrian crisis and on other current issues of the regional agenda,” a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

It added that the two officials had also discussed the prospects for the resumption of comprehensive intra-Syrian peace negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland.

The senior Iranian diplomat and Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei then took part in a trilateral meeting with Bogdanov and Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Yıldız to discuss the Astana talks that have been scheduled for January 23 in the wake of a nationwide Syria ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey last month.

Russia, Turkey and Iran will mediate the forthcoming peace talks that will be held between representatives from the Damascus government and dozens of foreign-sponsored opposition groups.

The ceasefire, which was endorsed by the UN Security Council on December 31, and the crisis resolution talks exclude the Daesh and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham Takfiri terrorist groups.

The Friday talks came after a trilateral meeting between the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey in Moscow on December 20, when the three sides agreed on steps to revitalize an intra-Syrian political process to end to the war in the Arab country.

The three countries had successfully implemented a similar truce deal earlier that month following the defeat of militants in Syria’s northwestern city of Aleppo.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on January 8 that he was “optimistic” about the upcoming peace negotiations in Astana, and expressed the government’s readiness to negotiate with the armed opposition groups.

Syria has been fighting foreign-sponsored militancy over the past almost six years. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimated in August last year that more than 400,000 people had been killed in the Syrian crisis until then. The UN has stopped its official casualty count in Syria, citing its inability to verify the figures it receives from various sources.

Iranian President Calls for Immediate Work on Joint Projects with Afghanistan

rouhani

In a meeting with Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah in Tehran on Wednesday, President Rouhani hoped for political stability and unity in Afghanistan to make enhancement of mutual cooperation possible.

He referred to projects for development of Iran’s southeastern port city of Chabahar and the connection of Iran’s railway to the Afghan city of Herat as major areas for accelerated cooperation between the two countries.

President Rouhani also assured the Afghan government and nation of Iran’s unwavering support.

The Afghan official, for his part, underlined the Kabul government’s resolve to expand relations with the “friendly and brotherly” country of Iran, in all fields.

Heading a diplomatic delegation, Abdullah arrived in Iran on Wednesday to attend a memorial service held for Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former president of Iran, chairman of the Expediency Council, and Tehran’s representative in the Assembly of Experts, who passed away at the age of 82 on Sunday.

President Rouhani Confers with Turkish Counterpart on Syrian Crisis

Rouhani Congratulates Erdogan on Turkey's National Day

In a telephone conversation on Thursday, the Turkish president offered his condolences to the Iranian nation over the demise of Ayatollah Rafsanjani and said the cleric was a great politician who made efforts to help establish peace and stability in the region and strengthen Tehran-Ankara relations.

He further emphasized that his country is determined to promote cooperation with the Islamic Republic in various areas, adding that close ties between the two nations can play a major role in resolving regional problems.

Rouhani, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the Turkish government for the condolences and said it proves that Iran and Turkey are two Muslim neighboring countries that share sorrow and joy with each other.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani died at the age of 82 on Sunday. The top cleric was an influential figure in a campaign led by Imam Khomeini that resulted in the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The deceased became president for two terms and was the chairman of the Expediency Council for some 20 years.

The Iranian and Turkish president also held talks on the latest efforts to resolve the prolonged Syrian crisis and the upcoming peace talks of the Arab country in Kazakhstan’s capital of Astana.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

Israeli Regime Bombs Military Airport in Damascus: Syria

syria

Syrian state news agency (SANA) reported that Mezzeh Airport was rocked by multiple explosions, with ambulances rushing to the scene.

The Syrian Arab Army has warned that there will be repercussions for Israel for the “flagrant attack” on the military base, state TV said, citing a Syrian army command spokesman. It also linked the alleged strike to Israel’s “support of terrorist groups.”

The army said several missiles were fired at the Mezzeh airport’s compounds from the Lake Tiberias area in northern Israel at about 12am Friday. The strike reportedly damaged one of the compounds of the crucial military facility, RT reported.

The Mezzeh airport is located west of Damascus, just 5 kilometres from the Presidential Palace, the official residence of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

There was no information on the death toll resulting from the airstrike immediately available. The base is reported to house Syria’s elite Republican Guards and Special Forces.

Footage from the scene with heavy fire and the sounds of explosions has surfaced on social media. Multiple reports from journalists and activists on the ground described the bombing, with the opposition also reporting there were rockets fired.

This is the second time in two months the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has being accused by the Syrian government of targeting Syrian positions from Israeli territory.

On December 7, SANA reported that “several surface-to-surface missiles” were launched by the IDF from the Golan Heights. At the time, the source in the Syrian armed forces slammed the attack as a “desperate attempt” by Israel to endorse terrorists.
