Top EU Court Allows Employers to Ban Muslim Headscarf

The court ruled that an employer can prohibit staff from wearing the Islamic headscarf or other religious symbols in the first case of its kind before the EU’s top court.

“An internal rule of an undertaking which prohibits the visible wearing of any political, philosophical or religious sign does not constitute direct discrimination,” the Luxembourg-based court said on Tuesday.

The ECJ ruled on the cases of two female employees in Belgium and in France, who were dismissed for refusing to remove their headscarves, a day before a Dutch parliamentary election dominated by the issue of immigration and integration.

The court’s ruling considered the case of a Belgian woman working as a receptionist for G4S Secure Solutions, which has a general ban on wearing visible religious or political symbols, according to media reports.

The court’s advocate general last year recommended that companies should be allowed to prohibit headscarves as long as a general ban on other symbols was in place. Companies should though consider the conspicuousness of such symbols and the nature of the employee’s activities.

The court’s ruling will also cover a French IT consultant who was told to remove her headscarf after a client complained.

The advocate general’s advice in the French case was that a rule banning employees from wearing religious symbols when in contact with customers was discrimination, particularly when it only applied to Islamic headscarves.

An opinion of an advocate general is not binding but is followed by the court in the majority of cases.

Esteghlal moved to the top of Group A of the 2017 AFC Champions League with a win against Uzbekistani football club PFC Lokomotiv Tashkent.

On Monday evening, the Tehran-based team pummelled Railroaders 2-0 in a match played at all-seater Azadi Stadium in western Tehran.

Esteghlal finally took the lead in the 37th minute, with Esmaeili receiving the ball and firing it through a crowd of players from 16 yards towards the visitors’ goalpost. The ball cruised past Ignatiy Nesterov and kissed the net.

Ali Ghorbani also got himself on the score sheet in the 84th minute to seal Esteghlal’s 2-0 win over Lokomotiv, Press TV reported.

Iran’s Leader Endorses Conditions for Pardoning Prisoners

The country’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani in a letter had asked for the Leader’s authorization of the conditions so that convicts deemed fit to receive clemency will be pardoned or have their sentences commuted on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) beloved daughter Hazrat Zahra (SA) and the upcoming Iranian New Year, known as Nowruz or Norooz.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Supreme Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

Each year on different occasions, including in February, when Iran marks the victory anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, or on religious occasions, Ayatollah Khamenei grants an amnesty for a number of prisoners.

Those granted clemency are prisoners convicted in local courts of arbitration, the country’s Islamic Revolution Court, the judicial apparatus serving Iran’s Armed Forces, and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.

The clemency, however, does not apply to some types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery, embezzlement, corruption, money laundering, acid attack, counterfeiting money, disturbing the country’s economic system, and alcohol-related crimes.

Reformists Choose Rouhani as Candidate for Iran Presidential Votes

The senior reformist lawmaker, Mohammad-Reza Aref, has announced that the country’s reformists will support Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s incumbent president, in the forthcoming presidential election scheduled to be held on May 19, 2017.

According to a Farsi report by the Etemad newspaper, following the extraordinary general meeting of the Reformists’ High Council for Policy making, Aref said the headquarters unit of the reformists and Rouhani’s supporters will be set up for the May elections.

Art of Making Iran’s Traditional Soap Registered Nationally

The director general of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of East Azarbaijan [Province], Morteza Abdar, said that the art of making the traditional soap of Maragheh (in northwestern Iranian province of East Azerbaijan) was registered in the list of Iran’s national intangible cultural heritage items, in a meeting in Tehran on March 11.

According to a Farsi report by IRNA, Abdar added with a historical background of more than two centuries, the soap of Maragheh is Iran’s most well-known traditional soap and the main and most valuable souvenir of the Iranian county.

He said prior to the mass production of industrial soaps, Maragheh soap was used by most people in Iranian cities, adding, it is currently available in abundance in the traditional markets of all the cities of the country and is quite popular among Iranians.

“Following the submission of the documents by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of East Azarbaijan [Province] to the expert committee of registering intangible cultural heritage items and after carrying out the required studies in this regard, the committee registered the art of making Maragheh’s traditional soap in the list of Iran’s national intangible cultural heritage items.

The soap of Maragheh is made of caustic soda and [sheep’s] tail fat. No chemical substance is used in the production of the soap.

At present, despite the large number of industrial soaps in the Iranian market, Maragheh soap, as a traditional detergent, is still popular among Iranians and has an international reputation.

The production of the soap takes a long time. Some six hours are required for the main materials used in the making of the soap to mix together. While it takes three more hours for the mixture to turn into soap.

Located 125 kilometers south of Tabriz, Maragheh is the second largest county of the East Azarbaijan Province.

The Only Ski Resort in Semi-Dry Eastern Iran

Shirbad Ski Resort, 70 kilometres west of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, is located at an altitude of 2,800 metres above the sea level. It was established in 2009.

According to a Farsi report by Khabar Online, it is the only ski resort in eastern parts of Iran, which are mostly dry or semi-dry.

Iranian Delegation in Astana for Fresh Round of Syria Talks

The Iranian team is going to take part in the two-day Syria talks in the Kazakh city of Astana on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Representatives of the Damascus government, the Syria opposition groups, Iran, Russia and Turkey were initially supposed to take part in the talks, but AFP on Monday quoted a spokesman for the Syrian opposition groups as saying that the dissidents won’t be attending the talks.

In February, at the conclusion of the second round of Astana talks, Jaberi Ansari hailed a “calmer and more conciliatory” atmosphere than the first round.

Diplomatic efforts to end fighting in Syria have gained momentum in recent months with the announcement of a ceasefire in the Arab country in early January, Tasnim reported.

The truce, which was negotiated between Russia, Iran, Turkey, the Damascus government and the Syrian opposition, excludes terrorist groups such as ISIS and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.

UN Says Violence against Syrian Children Hits Rock Bottom in 2016

UNICEF said that cases of children being killed, maimed, or recruited into armed groups were the “highest on record” last year.

“The depth of suffering is unprecedented. Millions of children in Syria come under attack on a daily basis, their lives turned upside down,” said Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF’s regional director.

“Each and every child is scarred for life with horrific consequences on their health, well-being, and future,” he said from the central Syrian city of Homs.

UNICEF recorded the violent deaths of at least 652 children last year, a 20 percent increase from 2015, and more than 250 of the victims were killed inside or near a school, AFP reported.

At least 850 children were recruited to fight in the conflict, including as executioners or suicide bombers — more than double the 2015 number.

More than 310,000 people have been killed and millions have been forced to flee their homes since the beginning of civil war in Syria.

UNICEF said that 2.3 million Syrian children are living as refugees in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Iraq.

Another 280,000 still live under siege across Syria, with no access to food or medicine, it said.

To cope with increasingly difficult living conditions, families inside Syria and in host nations have been forced to push their children into early marriages or child labour just to survive.

“There is so much more we can and should do to turn the tide for Syria’s children,” said Cappelaere.

DM Hails Iran’s Advanced Homegrown Tank

Speaking at a ceremony held to unveil Karrar tank on Sunday, Dehqan said upgrading armored equipment of the military tools is one of the main strategies of the Defense Ministry.

“The Karrar advanced tank…, with its numerous features and capabilities, can play a major role in implementing the strategy,” he noted.

The tank is one of the most advanced tanks in the world and can fully satisfy the needs of the Iranian Armed Forces, the minister said.

He further pointed to some advanced features of the Karrar tank, including its electro-optical fire control system, laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, and its capability to hit fixed and mobile targets.

Karrar is a class of Iranian tanks that enjoys modern technologies. Its earlier version is already in service, together with other locally-made tanks like Zolfaqar.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.
