Iranian Speaker Blasts Saudi Invasion of Yemen as Genocide

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says “Saudi invasion of Yemen is an all-out war against a nation. We are faced with a genocide in the country.”

According to a report by IFP, Larijani made the remarks in a press conference on March 13, answering a question about Saudi Arabia’s crimes in Yemen.

He added Iran is following up on the issue of Yemen, as it is a very important topic.

“Iran is very sensitive about this issue and is upbeat that Saudi Arabia would eventually change its behaviour towards Sana’a after its two-year imposed war against the country. The continuation of this war is not in the interest of Saudi Arabia, as an important regional country. We are hopeful about a change of policy by Saudi Arabia in this regard.”

In response to a question on the 2015 Mina tragic incident and Tehran’s willingness to resume ties with Riyadh, he said, “Iran’s foreign policy, in general, is based on fostering friendly relations with all Muslim countries.”

“However, we are required to work towards this goal within a pre-established framework. Mina stampede immensely distressed us. Nevertheless, we have set a number of frameworks and are required to move within them.”

Egypt Ties

On Iran’s relations with Egypt, the Iranian parliament speaker said Egypt and Iran are two regional countries with a strong civilizational background which maintain an acceptable growth.

Tehran has always taken great care to establish rational ties with Cairo, he added.

Larijani noted that previously, relations between the two states were slightly damaged due to Egypt’s behaviour towards Iran as well as a number of other factors.

Nevertheless, now that the conditions have changed, Iran welcomes any move by the country that would help normalise relations, he added.

“Egypt is an important country, but the steps taken so far have always failed to lead to the deepening of the relationship between the two states.”

Appointment of Ambassadors to Damascus, Muscat, Sana’a

Responding to a question on why the Iranian Parliament has not adopted a firm stance towards appointing Iranian ambassadors to important countries such as Syria, Oman and Yemen while it has a commission called “National Security and Foreign Policy Commission”, he acknowledged the delay in dispatching Iranian envoys to a number of states, stressing that, “We are not faced with a lack of diplomats suitable for such missions. We have sufficient connections. However, we are required to follow up the issue to resolve the problems.”

Outcomes of Talks with Persian Gulf States

Asked about his evaluation of the visits by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif to Kuwait and Oman as well as Qatar, respectively, he said Iran has always done its utmost to maintain peaceful and brotherly relations with the neighbouring states and adopt a positive approach to them.

“Perhaps, at certain occasions, a neighbouring country has adopted a hostile stance towards us, but we have always sought to forge brotherly ties with all the neighbouring countries. In his trips to Kuwait and Oman, President Rouhani held proper consultations with the countries’ officials and managed to effectively and accurately convey the views of the Islamic Republic to them. The officials of these countries were interested in holding further talks with their Iranian counterparts, the responsibility of which was delegated to the foreign ministers.”

Iran-Turkey Ties

Asked by a Turkish journalist about the Iranian foreign ministry’s move to advise Iranian tourists against visiting Turkey over security concerns while there is no such travel notice on the crisis-hit Iraq, Larijani said, “Turkey is Iran’s neighbour and friend. However, in this special case, Turkey is different from Iraq in some aspects.”

“In Iraq, Iranian pilgrims visit safe zones, such as the central Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, the security of which is much higher than the Turkish destinations Iranians visit. As you know, certain moves have taken place in Turkey causing a number of problems in the country. We are optimistic that the number of terrorist problems would decrease in Turkey, the country’s conditions would return to a normal state, and Tehran and Ankara continue their friendly relations.”

He stressed that Iran’s warning to its nationals is, by no means, indicative of abnormal relations between Tehran and Ankara, adding the Iranian government has to issue warnings to its people to keep them safe.

Iran expects the Turkish government to practice more prudence and tactfulness in issuing statements and adopting stances, Larijani said.

“Although Iran exercised patience, certain remarks made by the Turkish officials failed to be in proportion to the two states’ level of neighbourly ties.”

Relations with New US Government

Answering a question on the relations between Iran and the US and Tehran’s plan to give a strong response to the threats uttered by American officials and US President Donald Trump aimed at minimising Tehran’s influence in the region, the Parliament speaker said action speaks louder than words: There is a wide gap between having something in mind and expressing it publically and putting that idea into action.

“Given the conflicts it has experienced and in view of the ones still occurring in it, the Middle East has become a very tough region. Those who seek entry to it should be very careful not to come in inconsiderately with bare feet, as it will be highly costly for them.”

Nevertheless, he said, it would be highly plausible, if the US adopts a rational approach to fighting terrorism for it has suffered massive losses at the hands of terrorists.

“One of Trump’s rivals in the presidential elections, said, ‘We incurred the cost and the ISIS was formed.’ I [personally] demand them to, in case they are serious about what they say, do us a favour and annihilate the terrorist group. However, if they pursue other goals in the region, they should know that their predecessors had similar experiences in Iraq. I hope that they adopt a wise approach.”

Iran, Russia, Turkey Reaffirm Reinforcement of Syria Ceasefire

“The three countries… underlined the importance of the essential role of the Astana meetings in terms of complementing and facilitating the Geneva process, welcomed the resumption of the Geneva talks and… based on the interlinkage between the Geneva and Astana processes, they expressed their support for the continuation of the talks in Geneva on March 23, 2017,” said the joint statement by guarantor states, read out by Kazakhstan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Akylbek Kamaldinov.

Russia, Turkey and Iran as the three ceasefire guarantor states have discussed ways at the Astana talks on Syria to strengthen it and reduce violations, the three states said in a joint statement.

“The delegations of the three countries… reaffirmed their commitment to the consolidation and strengthening of the ceasefire regime, exchanged information on reports of ceasefire violations and stressed the need to reduce violations through increasing efficiency of the trilateral monitoring mechanism,” Sputnik cited the statement as saying.

Kamaldinov said that the fourth round of talks will take place on May 3-4, DNA India reported.

Kamaldinov also said that “separate consultations on expert level will be held in Tehran in April,” he said.

Earlier, Russian negotiator Alexander Lavrentiev said some of the Russian, Turkish and Iranian delegates would remain in Astana for meetings with a delegation from the Syrian opposition due to arrive in Astana later on Wednesday.

Thailand: A Role Model for Ecotourism

The tourism industry is a major drive force behind Thailand’s economy, contributing 17.7 percent (over $70 billion) to its $340 billion GDP last year, which is quite a significant figure that any country might crave for.

According to a report by IFP correspondent, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul believes that although tourism, which she brands as “the lion’s share of the Thai economy”, is booming, the South Asian country needs to further improve it in order to attract more “quality tourists”.

“The tourism industry in Thailand is growing and we are aiming to be a high quality destination. There are still many things that we have to develop to make sure tourists have a better stay in Thailand” Wattanavrangkul says.

Official figures show more than 32.5 million tourists, the majority of whom are Chinese (27 percent), visited Thailand in 2016 which shows a rise of nearly 9 percent compared with the year before. The significantly high number puts Thailand among top 12 countries dominating global tourism. In Asia, it stands second after China.

However, its bustling capital Bangkok, with many high rises, hotels, and large shopping malls, is the world’s most popular travel destination when it comes to cities. Thanks to over 21 million overseas travellers who visited Bangkok last year, the Thai capital ascended on the throne, pushing aside London.

The Thai tourism minister says the government plans to bring even more foreign visitors through a string of measures which include a project to facilitate traveling between Thailand and other countries.

“The Ministry of Tourism desires to provide foreign tourists with the easiest way of traveling,” Wattanavrangkul points out, adding that a working group comprised of several ministries is cooperating to implement the project.

Along with Bangkok, other cities like Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, and Pattaya are popular tourist spots. Tourists come to Thailand for three main reasons; shopping, entertainment and enjoying its nature and tropical wet and dry climate.

Changing Outlooks

The government, however, seeks to broaden the scope by offering more things to do and more places to go. Wattanavrangkul says her ministry wants to change the outlooks.

As the country’s first female tourism minister, Wattanavrangkul has promised to redefine Thailand as a female-friendly travel destination.

To do the makeover, she says, the country has taken several measures aimed at encouraging foreign families and females to give it a second thought before they give up Thailand for another country for holidays.

A key step, as she says, was to “introduce new tourist destinations and activities in Thailand” for families and females.

“Last year, men constituted 70 percent of the Japanese tourists to Thailand and women only accounted for 30 percent… This lack of female tourists was maybe because of their misperception of Thailand. They thought the country had nothing to offer, whereas, women can also travel to Thailand and have lots of fun and relaxation and get refreshment,” the minister says.

“Pattaya is no longer Thailand’s only tourist destination. There are a large number of new places and smaller towns where tourists can touch the local experience,” boasts.WattanavrangkulEnjoy Bumpy Elephant Ride in Ko Chang

The severe-looking minister sounds to be right. In my recent trip to Thailand with a group of Iranian journalists, I stayed two days on a beautiful island with a dense forest and sandy beaches.

Ko Chang, meaning the island of elephants, is located 310 kilometres southeast of Bangkok. We took a half-an-hour ferry ride to reach an island no Iranian has ever set foot on.

During our comfortable stay at a reasonably priced five-star hotel, we went snorkelling around three isles near Ko Chang, visited Mu Ko Chang National Park, experienced a soothing Thai massage at a top-notch spa and visited the elephant camp where we mounted the mega mammals for an hour-long ride on a bumpy dirt path through a thick forest.

Amazingly, the island has really a lot to offer to families.

Tourism plays an important part for Thailand, a nation of 67 million people. According to the tourism minister, some 4.5 million Thais are directly and indirectly involved in the industry.

Due to political upheavals in recent years, Thailand’s tourism lost some steam but soon managed to bounce back.

Wattanavrangkul stresses that “a stable political situation” could help “improve the quality of life” and bring about a “better future for Thais.

thailand treeA Role Model to Look up to

As a country with countless tourist attractions, Iran can learn a lot from Thailand to boost ecotourism. According to the Thai tourism minister, last year up to 120,000 Iranians took all the way to Thailand to spend a few days there, whereas, only 5,400 Thais came up to Iran to see the ancient civilisation of Persia and enjoy its four-season climate and nature.

Last September, Massoud Soltanifar, the then chief of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization met Wattanavrangkul, who was on an official visit to Iran. At the meeting Soltanifar expressed Iran’s willingness to “make use of Thailand’s experiences” to promote tourism.

Why not? Iran can look up to Thailand as a role model to revitalize its tourism sector through which it can create more jobs, spur its economy and once again make a name among top tourist countries.

Sharp Rise in Number of Foreign Media Covering Iran’s Beauties

According to Pouria Souri, the head of public relations at Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, over 100 teams from international news agencies applied for permission to prepare reports, photographs and films of historical places or meet tourism officials in the current Iranian year (started 20 March 2016).  The number of applicants has almost doubled compared with the previous year when 54 journalists sent requests to ICHHTO.

“The US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Turkey, China, Iraq and Oman were among the wide range of countries that chose to introduce Iran to their nation through news reports and programs,” Souri was quoted as saying by IRNA.  Reputable news agencies and media outlets such as Associated Press, Sky News, ARTE, France 24, TRT, Wall Street Journal, The Economist and Japan’s National Geographic, as well as a myriad of lesser-known channels and publications, have shown interest in Iranian attractions.  The provinces of Tehran, Isfahan, Fars, Yazd and Khuzestan as well as tourist sites of Niavaran, Sa’dabad and Golestan palaces and Iran’s National Museum (all in Tehran) have received the greatest attention from foreign media.

“The publication of these reports will help promote Iran as a tourist destination worldwide and hopefully boost inbound tourism,” said Souri.

Astana Talks to Wait for Syrian Opposition to Arrive

The opposition representatives are scheduled to attend Thursday’s talks, opposition sources told Anadolu Agency. It will include a spokesman and a small technical team.

The opposition on Saturday had called for the postponement of the negotiations until March 20 because they claimed Syrian government has breached a violation.

Opposition delegate Osama Abu Zaid earlier tweeted that the opposition would not attend.

Following the Dec. 30 cease-fire, the first round of Astana talks were held on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, brokered by Iran and Russia, who support the Bashar al-Assad government, and Turkey, which backs the opposition. A second round was held in mid-February.

The negotiations continue in parallel with a more formal UN-mediated peace process in Geneva.

Iran’s Persepolis Defeated by Qatar’s Al Rayyan in ACL

In Match-day Three of ACL in Doha, Mehdi Taremi gave visiting team an early lead just six minutes into the match but Rodrigo Tabata equalized the match 13 minutes later.

Tabata then put his side 2-1 up in the 58th minute from the spot after Jalal Hosseini upended Sebastian Soria in the box.

Sergio Garcia scored the third goal for the host with two minutes from time.

The win sees Al Rayyan leapfrog Persepolis and Al Hilal to the top of the standings after the Saudi Arabian side drew 2-2 with Al Wahda in Tuesday’s other Group D encounter.

persepolis al rayyan Esteghlal Khuzestan of Iran was also held to a 1-1 draw by Qatar’s Lekhwiya in a match held in Ahvaz on Tuesday.

Hassan Beytsaeid put the host side in front after seven minutes when he picked himself off the floor to convert from the penalty spot as Esteghlal sought to maintain its perfect start to the campaign, Tasnim reported.

But Ismaeil Mohammed found the back of the net in the 11th minute to level the scores and earn Djemal Belmadi’s team a draw that sees the Qatari side maintain the two-point gap between the teams at the top of Group B.

Debutant Esteghlal Khuzestan had already earned back-to-back 1-0 victories over Al Fateh of Saudi Arabia and the UAE’s Al Jazira.

Islamic Virtual Network Needed to Counter West’s Cyber Colonialism

Saeid-Reza Ameli Renani, the head of the Faculty of World Studies at the University of Tehran, highlighted the need for establishing a virtual network for the Muslims world to help create a healthy atmosphere in the cyberspace and improve relations among Muslims.

According to a report by IFP, held under the scientific supervision of Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli, the confab was attended by the Muslim world’s elites and thinkers as well as domestic and foreign Islamologists.

Speaking at a recent conference, Ameli provided examples of the widespread use of the Internet and its great popularity, asking the question: “Are we moving towards a new culture in this new era?”

He noted that virtual colonialism is the West’s modern type of colonisation, adding, “Currently, the US is colonising the world by means of virtual networks. In fact, we are not undergoing a transition from one tool to another, but a change from one social and cultural system to another one. In the virtual environment, a slight alteration in an algorithm can lead to a change in a concept or a life reality.”

“Now that it has become possible to be present everywhere, if we fail to be omnipresent we are lazy and lack an effective system or plan to counter the Satan’s domination,” he quoted Ayatollah Ebrahim Amini, a member of the Assembly of Experts, as saying, stressing that at present there are two approaches to globalisation: Top-down and bottom-up.

“The former is evident in the efforts by the US and European states to dominate the world, whereas, the latter is an approach to be adopted by anybody, even someone living in a small remote Iranian village.”

Commenting on the cyberspace’s cultural issues and the concept of cyberspace culture, he said it is not plausible to study and discuss cultural, political and economic issues each in isolation.

“Currently, the main focus is on the centrality of culture. At present, people have a large number of options and choices at their disposal. If what they are presented with fails to be attractive enough, they will definitely opt for another one.”

He concluded his speech by proposing to set up a special virtual network for Muslims, saying, “The virtual environment has provided us with the opportunity to create our own eco-system. We can create our own place, space and location in the virtual environment and officially and privately set up the Muslims’ network on the Internet to have a healthy atmosphere.”

“Internet has the capacity to provide Muslims with a healthy atmosphere for exchanging experience and knowledge with each other in numerous fields and on different topics and help them have a network for launching different campaigns to, by using all the available facilities, be able to move and work towards a better future. God has promised us a better future saying the earth will be inherited by the righteous ones,” he noted.
