Ahmadinejad, Baqaei’s Cases Still Open: Judiciary Spokesman

ejei

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei said the lawsuits were filed against Ahmadinejad in the capacity of president and have not yet led to the delivery of a verdict.

Asked whether a court would be determined to probe Ahmadinejad’s case in the current Iranian calendar year, Mohseni-Ejei said he could not comment on this issue as long as a hearing has not been scheduled.

A number of lawsuits have been filed with Iran’s judicial officials after Ahmadinejad’s term in office concluded among which cases of malfeasance are more prominent.

Out of major cases filed against the former president are three complaints by the Iranian Parliament’s Article 90 Commission.

The commission filed lawsuits against the former administration, which included failure to set up the merged Ministry of Sport and Youth and name its minister on time, refusal to submit the articles of association of the National Iranian Oil Company and failing to allocate the necessary budget to the Tehran subway.

A court hearing for seeing into complaints filed against Ahmadinejad has been postponed on several occasions.

Mohseni-Ejei further pointed to lawsuits against Baqaei and said his “case is pending and under investigation.”

The Judiciary spokesman added that Baqaei’s “innocence or guilt has not been definitively established,” rejecting Baqaei’s claim that he had been acquitted by the court and an apology was made to him.

On Wednesday, Ahmadinejad, Iran’s former two-time president starting in 2005, registered to take part in the 12th round of Iran’s presidential election.

Ahmadinejad was accompanying Baqaei, who also went through the registration process. He has already thrown his weight behind his former aide.

Erdogan Urges Other Countries to Respect Turkish People’s Vote

Erdogan

A slim majority of Turkish voters agreed on Sunday to grant sweeping powers to their president, in a watershed moment that the country’s opposition fears may cement a system of authoritarian rule within one of the critical power brokers of the Middle East.

With nearly 99 percent of votes in a referendum counted on Sunday night, supporters of the proposal had 51.3 percent of votes cast, and opponents had 48.7 percent, the country’s electoral commission announced.

Striking a conciliatory tone following the bitter contest, Turkey’s president Erdogan called on foreign powers to respect the outcome – which will mean 18 constitutional changes – as he thanked the Turkish people.

He said, “April 16 is the victory of all who said yes or no, of the whole 80 million, of the whole of Turkey of 780,000 square kilometres.

“We would like other countries and institutions to show respect to the decision of the nation.”

But as he addressed thousands of flag-waving supporters in Istanbul a short time later, he was more defiant.

“There are those who are belittling the result. They shouldn’t try, it will be in vain,” he said.

“It’s too late now.”

Shortly afterwards, the main opposition party demanded the cancellation of the result, saying the referendum had been won through “illegal acts”.

But speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Erdogan said results showed a winning margin of 1.3 million votes in what he described as a “historic decision”.

The head of the country’s electoral board confirmed the win shortly after Mr Erdogan spoke and said the final results would be known in 11-12 days.

The “yes” vote means Turkey’s parliamentary system of government will be replaced with a presidential one and could see Mr Erdogan remain in office until 2029.

The office of prime minister is also set to be abolished, allowing the president to draft the budget, declare a state of emergency and issue decrees overseeing ministries without parliamentary approval.

The changes are due to come in after the next election, scheduled for 2019.

The majority of Iranian newspapers on Monday covered the inauguration of several mega projects in South Pars (SP) Gas Field in southern Iran, including the launch of SP Phases 17, 18, 19, 21 and 22 – with an investment of $20 billion – by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, as a national historic victory and achievement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s victory in the country’s nationwide referendum on Sunday (April 16), winning 51.5 per cent of the votes, was also a main focus of the Iranian daily newspapers.

The deadly flood in northwestern Iran, which killed at least 41, and the criticisms raised against the government’s aid delivery to the flood-hit people, also received wide coverage by Iranian newspapers.

Also in the limelight were Iran’s May 19 presidential elections, candidate hopefuls’ remarks as well as policies and strategies and the stances held by reformists and conservatives towards their nominees. One newspaper quoted a reformist analyst as saying that the conservative party’s main candidate Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi has not been received very well by his fellow partisans as they know that he is not going to win the election.

International reactions to the brutal massacre of the Syrian children and women of the Shiite-populated villages of al-Foua and Kefraya while being transferred by buses to the city of Aleppo constituted the other major portion of the news stories in today’s papers.

Among the other news stories were Russia’s preconditions for selling Sukhoi airplanes to Iran, the ISIS’ chemical attack on the western part of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the release of $37 billion worth of Iranian assets, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s submission of a three-month report about the implementation of the nuclear deal, US President Donald Trump’s secret negotiations with North Korea, and the comments made by the Iranian judiciary spokesman, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, concerning the  lawsuits filed against the country’s former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and his vice president, Hamid Baqaei.

Iran Respects Turkish People’s Vote in Referendum

bahram

Speaking to reporters at his press conference in Tehran on Monday, Qassemi pointed to Turkey’s referendum on constitutional changes that would replace the current parliamentary system with a presidential one, saying, “This an internal issue (in Turkey) and we will respect whatever the people vote for.”

He further emphasized that in order to see the referendum’s effects patience is needed.

Qassemi also expressed the hope that the referendum will lead to “peace, stability, security, and a national consensus in Turkey”.

Turkey held the referendum on Sunday. The turnout was high with more 86 percent of the country’s 55 million eligible voters casting ballots that were simply marked Yes or No, according to media reports.

Turkey’s state-run news agency said “Yes” votes were leading in the referendum.

But the main opposition party, CHP, said they will demand a recount of 37 per cent of the vote, claiming that 1.5 million “illegal” ballots were counted.

The pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) also said they had information there was between three and four per cent voter fraud during the vote.

The “Yes” side took an early lead during vote counting and stood at more than 51 per cent with 98 percent of ballots tallied, The Anadolu Agency said.

However, there was also confusion over the number of votes that had been counted, with the Supreme Election Commission reporting that only 65 to 70 per cent of ballots had been opened.

Trump Can’t Harm Iran-Russia Relations: Envoy

The Russian ambassador

Russian Ambassador to Iran Levan Dzhagaryan has weighed in on the relations between Moscow and Tehran and the issue of Syria in an interview published on Saturday in Shargh Daily, saying fostering sustained relations with Iran is Russia’s major foreign policy priority.

According to a report by IFP, Dzhagaryan said Moscow strongly condemns the US missile attack on a Syrian air base, adding, “Russia’s missile defence systems failed to track the US rockets for the Americans had given us the heads-up just two hours prior to the launch of their projectiles and our defence systems are located only in the northwestern Syrian province of Latakia. As we have earlier announced, we will strengthen our missile defence system. Our response to the US attack plan was quite clear, serious and, definitely, negative.”

On April 7, the US military launched 59 missiles targeting an airbase in the Syrian province of Homs. Iran, Russia and Syria have repeatedly condemned the move by the White House.

He added the Russian government did not expect US President Donald Trump to carry out the attack despite his previous promises.

“As Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly said [a few days ago], trust between Russia and the US has deteriorated since Trump took office. This is because Trump and his moves are not predictable.”

Dzhagaryan noted that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also clearly told US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that the attack had been a violation of the international humanitarian laws and an effort to support terrorists and has asked Washington to refrain from making such moves without prior coordination with Moscow.

“In case fighting terrorists is our common goal, such unilateral moves against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s legal government should be avoided. Nevertheless, we will strengthen our missile defence system and wait to see what would be their [the US] next actions.”

Russian President Putin in a recent meeting with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella in Moscow blasted the US plot to mount a poison gas attack on Damascus through Syrian rebels to, later, be able to blame it on al-Assad’s government and provide a pretext for further missile strikes on the country and possible change of the government.

Commenting on Putin’s remarks, Dzhagaryan stressed that in case such events and scenarios unfold, Russia will take necessary actions and measures.

“Currently, the Russian government has decided to take the necessary moves and measures. Unlike the US that first takes action and then thinks about it, we, primarily, carry out the required studies and do the required follow-ups and then make our decisions. Russia has asked the US to refrain from uttering threats. In the recent Group of 7 meeting in Italy, nobody supported the UK’s Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who had engineered the sanctions against Russia [in the firsts place], and no consensus was reached [over the imposition of threatening sanctions against Russia and Syria]. Johnson has cancelled his trip to Russia which implies that the UK plays no role [in issues concerning Syria] and Russia is required to hold talks solely with the US.”

The Russian ambassador stressed that this [Syrian] issue is very important, adding Moscow has repeatedly told the Western Europe countries that it does not need to hold dialogues with them [about the issue of Syria] as they are not independent and merely reiterating Trump’s decisions and remarks [about the crisis and condition in the Middle Eastern nation].

Rejecting Tillerson’s remarks urging Russia to unite with the US instead of bonding with Iran and Hezbollah, Dzhagaryan said, “We do not need to consult with the US. Russia’s policy is an independent one. They can issue directives to their allies, but we do not need to make such moves.”

He noted that Washington’s cooperation with Moscow in fight against ISIS is not in contradiction to Russia’s independence, adding his country is willing to collaborate with the US in fight against a common enemy, but requires each side to cooperate equally.

“We do not consent to the Americans leadership and, by no means, acquiesce to their command.”

In response to a question concerning the future of the strategic cooperation between Iran and Russia, in case of Moscow and Washington consenting to collaborate with each other on the Syrian issue, he said he sees no contradiction here.

“Firstly, we need to see what the Americans’ offer is. However, we will never consent to enhance our strategic cooperation with the US at the expense of our strategic collaboration with Iran. Iran has its own status and is among Russia’s foreign policy priorities, particularly, after the recent visit of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Moscow which turned out to be very fruitful. Our approach towards Iran is, in no way, impacted by Russia’s level of relations with the US. These are two separate issues.”

He said Russia’s expanded cooperation with the US does not imply that any deals the country makes with the White House will work to the detriment of Iran, adding, the state and type of Moscow’s cooperation with Tehran is quite distinct and well defined.

Both states are in the same front in Syria, he stressed.

“Other issues raised are all rumours spread by the BBC Persian which broadcasts untrue news.”

He noted that despite the Trump administration’s insistence, it is impossible for Russia to choose between Iran and the US, adding each of these two countries has its own position in Russia’s foreign policy.

“Such proposals [such as the one put forward by the US] are, in no way, debatable. We are the decision maker. If the US is interested in cooperating with us, we will also be willing to reciprocate. It is alright though if they do not seek to collaborate.”

The US imposes sanctions and Russia reciprocates, he said.

“Our response will be resolute and serious.”

Russia Expects Iran to Buy Russian Sukhoi Planes!

Commenting on Moscow’s offer to Tehran to sell Sukhoi, a Russian aircraft manufacturer, airliners to Tehran, the Russian envoy said his country has voiced willingness to sell Sukhoi Superjet 100 to Iran.

“In case the Iranian side is interested in the offer, there will be no problem.”

Dzhagaryan stressed that Trump’s entrance into the White House will have no impacts on ties between Iran and Russia as the two countries’ level of relations is at its peak.

Trump’s Secret Talks with North Korea amid Tensions

Trump’s Secret Talks with North Korea amid Tensions

Tensions surrounding the Korean Peninsula are extreme, with no immediate sign of easing. North Korea has made it clear it will respond tit-for-tat to aggressive US moves by firing a missile on Sunday morning, although the launch failed dismally.

The geopolitical crisis is expected to face a critical juncture this week as US Vice President Mike Pence is on a three-day visit to Seoul as of Sunday afternoon, during which he discusses a possible breakthrough with his South Korean counterpart, Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn.

Against this backdrop, a senior journalist has raised startling claims that secret talks had begun between the US and North Korea in New York to end the crisis, according to a report by Korea Times covered by Javan newspaper in Iran.

The North’s recent revival of a parliamentary foreign affairs commission was a “prelude” to the alleged bilateral dialogue, said Korea Economic editorial writer Jeong Kyu-jae, in a self-produced news analysis video posted on YouTube on Friday afternoon.

He did not present any concrete evidence of the alleged secret talks, merely claiming that his claim was based on intelligence from credible sources. The video has been watched more than 150,000 times as of Sunday noon.

“It seems to be true that a secret meeting between the US and North Korea has begun,” Jeong says in the 20-minute video.” As far as I know, the US will demand that North Korea permanently abandon, not freeze, its nuclear program.”

The Korea Times contacted government bodies handling North Korean issues, but nobody confirmed such a meeting.

The favors Washington is reported to have offered in return for the North’s permanent abandonment of its nuclear program are somewhat mind-boggling.

According to Jeong, the US has expressed its willingness to establish a formal diplomatic relationship with North Korea. Once the relationship is formed, Washington would station an infantry outside Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital, to protect the Kim Jong-un regime, and the US Navy would support the mission at North Korea’s military port in Wonsan, according to the journalist.

“If the dialogue turns out to be productive, US President Donald Trump might send his special envoy to the North in a clandestine manner in late April or early May,” he said. “This is a scenario that will play out only when things unfold smoothly. If the talks are unsuccessful, the US might consider a military strike as the next option.”

Experts called Jeong’s claims “absurd” and “unrealistic” A North Korea expert here said China would never agree to U.S. forces being stationed near Pyongyang.

Iran’s FM Arrives in Ashgabat as First Leg of Central Asian Tour

Iran's FM Arrives in Ashgabat as First Leg of Central Asian Tour

The three-day tour spans Turkmenistan, Georgia, and Kyrgyzstan. A 20-member delegation of businessmen and company representatives is accompanying Zarif who cited transit cooperation among the objectives of the visit.

“There is a possibility for transit cooperation with Georgia to link the Black Sea to the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean which is a very favorable way for the future of transit and the North-South Corridor,” he said.

Zarif made the remarks as he landed in Ashgabat on Sunday and was received by Turkmenistan’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Vepa Hajiyev.

The Iranian foreign minister started his visit in Turkmenistan with a meeting with President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, discussing regional developments as well as ways of expanding bilateral ties, IRNA news agency reported.

The International North-South Transport Corridor (NSTC) was formalized among India, Iran and Russia in 2000 to link the Subcontinent and the Middle East to the Caucasus, Central Asia and Europe.

Besides Iran, India and Russia, countries that are on board to integrate into the transit network include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Turkey, Tajikistan, Oman, Syria and Bulgaria.

Zarif has already said the countries involved were discussing the “final details” of the project. Dry runs of the route were conducted in 2014, from Mumbai to Baku and Astrakhan via Bandar Abbas.

The NSTC opens a window for alignment with Silk Road Economic Belt pushed by China to establish new trade and transport links with Central Asia and Europe and provide a counterbalance to US “pivot” to Asia.

Iran's FM Arrives in Ashgabat as First Leg of Central Asian Tour

Before his talks in Ashgabat, the Iranian minister said his talks were aimed at reinforcing the bilateral ties among other things. “Enhancement of relations with neighbors has always formed the Iranian foreign policy’s most important priority,” he said.

Iran, Zarif said, also sought to pave the way for increasing its non-oil exports as well as technical and engineering services to the neighbors, and follow up on the memoranda of understanding already signed with them.

Zarif touched on the Iranian foreign ministry’s plans to help revitalize the country’s economy, saying exports of technical and engineering services to neighbors were one of the subjects which his delegation sought to bring up in the talks.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei named the new Persian year as “the year of production and employment and “the Foreign Ministry has been taking measures to help in their regard,” he said.

Zarif also touched on common threats to the regional countries and the need for collective efforts to confront them.

“Our region is faced with the threat of extremism and terrorism from all sides and we need close cooperation with the regional countries,” he said.

Over 1 Million Working in Executive Team of Iran Presidential Election

Iran Elections

Kazem Mirvalad, a member of the Central Executive Board of Iran’s presidential election, said 1,000,150 individuals will constitute the team responsible for holding Iran’s May 19 presidential election.

According to a Farsi report by Al-Alam News Network, Mirvalad said reports indicate that the election process has progressed very well as the central board’s secretariat, headquartered in the Iranian capital of Tehran, is in constant contact with the counties in other Iranian provinces and a number of executive boards have been set up in other provinces.

Following the conclusion of the voting process and sending the ballot papers to Tehran, in case the central board approves of the reliability of the election process, the results will be announced, he added.

Commenting on the holding of the upcoming presidential votes, another member of the presidential election’s Central Executive Board, Gholamreza Tajgardoun, expressed optimism that the voting process would be gone through successfully and undisputedly.

“In case of any doubts about the reliability of the election system or result, we, as the Iranian people’s trustees, will promptly take necessary actions.”

He listed the other members of the Central Executive Board as Hossein-Ali Amiri, Hamid Mirzadeh, Mohsen Haji Mirzaei-Nekou, Hojjatoleslam Mohammad-Ali Shahidi, Ali Asghar Ahmadi and Kazem Mirvalad.
