Iranian newspapers today covered the message of condolences by the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei over the deadly mine explosion in northeastern Iran.

The top story, however, was the second presidential debate between the six candidates, which was held on Friday afternoon in a less tense atmosphere compared with the previous debate.

Reformist and pro-government papers praised Rouhani’s stronger presence in the second debate, and a number of conservative media referred to the apparent coalition between the three conservative candidates Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Ebrahim Raisi, and Mostafa Mirsalim.

Qeshm Island Geopark Becomes Global after Receiving UNESCO Green Card

Qeshm Geopark Becomes Global after Receiving UNESCO Green Card

In a meeting held in September 2016, the Global Geoparks Council of the United Nations’ Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) had decided to designate Qeshm Island Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark for a four-year period.

The decision was endorsed during the 201st session of the UNESCO Executive Board on Friday, May 5, and Qeshm Island Geopark officially became global.

The designation will start from May 5, 2017, and will be valid until May 4, 2021, according to a statement by the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences of the UNESCO Global Geoparks.

Geoparks have significant scientific and geological value, apart from being a natural and cultural heritage. The Global Geopark Network, established by UNESCO, not only registers such parks but also pursues three other objectives: Geopark protection, spreading awareness and setting standards for green tourism.

To comply with UNESCO standards, a geopark must have appropriate infrastructure and adequate accommodation for tourists, in line with environmental standards while protecting the natural landscape.

Geopark is a territory encompassing one or more sites of scientific importance, not only for geological reasons but also by virtue of its archeological, ecological or cultural value.

Iran’s Qeshm Island; Major Hub of Tourist Attractions

Geopark literally means ‘Geological Park’ and semantically, is a vast area the boundaries of which are clearly specified and surrounds several remarkable geological phenomena (geological heritage) this area should be able to play an important role in economic development of the peripheral communities.

Qeshm Island Geopark sprawls over an area of 32,000 hectares on the western side of the island.

Qeshm Island is one of Iran’s seven free zones and a top holiday destination. Apart from the sandy beaches, the island’s famed mangrove forests in the Hara Protected Area draw numerous Iranian and foreign tourists.

Iranian Parties Should All Have Equal Rights: Rouhani

“If we are going to achieve our goals in social and political issues, we should recognize different thoughts. We are not even allowing different parties and groups to be active in an equal way,” Rouhani said in the second presidential debate on Friday afternoon in reaction to the remarks made about his government’s intolerance towards criticism.

“Are all ethnic groups and minorities in Iran enjoying equal rights? We are even criticized by the two sides for appointing a female Sunni as a local governor. They ask why the governor should be a woman and why a Sunni,” he went on to say.

“All Iranians should enjoy equal civil rights,” he went on to say.

Qalibaf Slams Rouhani’s Gov’t for Importing Apparel from Italy

Qalibaf Slams Rouhani’s Gov’t for Importing Apparel from Italy

In response to a question about his plans on education and science growth in the second presidential debate on Friday, Qalibaf referred to a ‘dubious’ apparel cargo discovered in a house belonging to Rouhani’s education minister, and said such unnecessary imports will harm the country’s economy.

In reaction to Qalibaf, Es’haq Jahangiri said the imported goods belonged to the education minister’s daughter, who was unemployed and spent only 200 million tomans [around $53,000] for legally importing the clothing from Italy.

However, Qalibaf noted that other Iranian people who are unemployed are not capable of doing such business, and the move by the country’s education minister will have dire consequences.

Mirsalim Raps Rouhani for Discontinuing Plane Production Plan

During the second presidential debate on Friday afternoon, Mirsalim said Rouhani’s government has discontinued a national plan for designing and manufacturing planes and plane parts, and is instead importing them from other countries.

Mirsalim referred to Turkey which is manufacturing plane parts and said Iran is not less capable of its neighbouring country.

“Bin Salman’s Remarks Show Riyadh’s Collusion with Terrorists”

khoshrou

Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo, in a letter to the Secretary General of the world body António Guterres, expressed Iran’s protest at recent “unlawful” and “inflammatory” remarks by Saudi Defense Minister and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Khoshroo said Salman’s comment that “war should be spread into Iran” is a blatant admission that Riyadh is in cahoots with terrorists and is an accessory to acts of terror and violence inside Iran.

The full text of Khoshroo’s letter follows:

In the name of God, the most Compassionate, the most Merciful

Excellency,

Upon instructions from my Government, I wish to bring to your attention the recent unlawful and inflammatory statement made by Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — who is also the Defense Minister of Saudi Arabia.

On 2 May 2017, Prince Mohammed bin Salman stated, ‘We will work so that the battle is on their side, inside Iran, not in Saudi Arabia.’ While categorically rejecting the baseless allegations against my country, I wish to underline that his statement reflects an unveiled threat against the Islamic Republic of Iran, in violation of Article 2 (Paragraph 4) of the UN Charter, as well as a clear admission of the long-known complicity of the Saudi regime in acts of terror and violence inside Iran, the latest of which resulted in the murder of 9 Iranian border guards, by the Saudi-financed armed bands. This blatant threat and admission is being made by a regime with a long record of supporting aggression and using terrorist and extremist groups for its short-sighted and dangerous ambitions in the region and beyond.

Over the past four decades, our region and the world have suffered tremendously as a consequence of Saudi insecurity and misplaced obsession with Iran, clearly manifested in the above-quoted statement. This has led to irresponsible, provocative and ill-fated policies and practices of promoting and financing extremism globally and short-sighted and self-defeating adventurism in the region.

We all – including Saudi authorities — need to be reminded of the fact that this misplaced obsession and insecurity lead to the Kingdom’s unreserved support and financing of Saddam Hussein’s aggression against Iran from 1980 to 1988, whose devastating consequence was not confined to the hundreds of thousands of Iranians who became victims of Saddam’s aggression and use of chemical weapons, but engulfed the entire region after his invasion of Kuwait and threats against KSA, biting the hands that had fed and sustained him.

The creation of Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in the 90’s, sponsorship of terror and instability in Iraq since 2003, and formation, financing and arming of ISIS, Nusra Front and other terrorist organization in Iraq and Syria over the past several years are other manifestations of the same Saudi misplaced obsession, which have brought misery and insecurity to the entire globe. It is imperative for the international community to take necessary action to compel Saudi Arabia to stop its reckless sponsorship of terrorism and extremism in the region and across the globe, and particularly its blatant and open aggression, starvation and genocide against the people of Yemen.

In contrast to Saudi rulers, the Islamic Republic of Iran believes that peace and stability is in the common interest of every state in the Persian Gulf region and no country can attain security at the expense of insecurity for others. We have no desire, nor any interest, in an escalation of tension in our neighborhood. We continue to stand ready for dialogue and accommodation to promote regional stability, combat destabilizing extremist violence and reject sectarian hatred. We hope Saudi Arabia will be persuaded to heed the call of reason.

I should be grateful if you would have the present letter circulated as a document of the Security Council.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Iran President Orders Acceleration of Efforts to Save Trapped Miners

In his Thursday message, President Rouhani said the tragic mine blast incident, which killed and injured a number of miners, has grieved the entire Iranian nation.

Rouhani said he has assigned First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri to do whatever necessary to relieve the pains of families of the victims, assess the magnitude of damages, and compensate victims of the incident.

Pointing to a delegation, comprised of the ministers of industry and labour, which was dispatched to the site of the incident as the first step, President Rouhani said all organizations should join hands to speed up the process of rescue operations.

In a separate message, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also expressed condolences to the labour community over the tragic incident, Tasnim reported.

Thirty-five coal miners died in ‘Zemestan-Yurt’ mine in Golestan Province after a gas explosion and raging fire on Wednesday. Twenty-five bodies have been retrieved from the mine so far.

The blast occurred at midday at a depth of 1,200 meters in the coal mine. Officials say the explosion occurred after a locomotive stalled at a depth of 700 meters and the workers tried to jump-start the vehicle with an external battery. Electric sparks triggered the explosion in the tunnel filled with methane.
