6 Murderers Escape ‘Eye for an Eye’ Punishment in Iran

The convicts were supposed to receive the Qisas punishment, which means retaliation in kind in the Islamic Penal Law, early on Wednesday in Rajai Shahr prison in the northern outskirts of Karaj, approximately 20 km west of Tehran.

With the efforts of the Peace and Reconciliation Unit of Tehran’s Criminal Court, four killers escaped retaliation punishment and the two others were granted respite by the victims’ nearest relatives.

One of the murderers is a boy who was 19 at the time of committing murder. He had killed a man following a fatal argument in the street over driving dispute.

He was sentenced to retaliation under the Qisas principle at branch 74 of the Tehran Penal Court.

The verdict was also confirmed in branch 3 of the Supreme Court of Iran, according to a Farsi report by the Tabnak news website.

While the sentence was supposed to be implemented, he managed to escape the retribution with the consent of the victim’s first-degree relatives.

In two other cases, two of the six murderers obtained consent from the victims’ relatives with the payment of over $450,000 as Diyya – the financial compensation paid to the victim or heirs of a victim in the cases of murder.

Iranian General Blasts US for Regime Change Comments

In comments on Thursday, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri slammed the recent anti-Iran remarks as a new episode in a series of dreams that US officials repeat every now and then in a childish manner.

Iran has no concerns about the “ludicrous dreams” that American officials have about overthrowing the Islamic Republic, the commander added, stressing that they would meet with a practical response to their words.

The comments came after US Secretary of Defense James Mattis accused Tehran of sponsoring terrorism and called for regime change in Iran in an interview with the newspaper of a local American high school.

The suggestion of regime change is not the first by a Donald Trump administration official. In June, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stated that the US would support those wanting to bring about regime change in Iran.

US Downplaying Iran’s Role in Mosul Liberation: Analyst

Russia-based political analyst Andrew Korybko says the US is trying to downplay Iran’s key role in recapturing the Iraqi city of Mosul from ISIS terrorists.

In an interview with the Tasnim news agency, the commentator noted that Washington, predictably, seeks to blow its contribution to the Mosul recapture out of all proportion and deliberately play down Iran’s role in that victory.

“The liberation of Mosul is a great victory and achievement in the fight against terrorism, but it shouldn’t be celebrated too much because still much remains to be done in the campaign against terror in order to liberate more areas in Iraq and to establish security in areas already liberated,” the analyst highlighted.

“Moreover, the end of war on terror in Iraq wouldn’t mean a peaceful and prosperous future is guaranteed for the country, especially given the Kurds’ new scenario to hold an independence referendum in Iraq. This could very likely cause civil strife among Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds in the country, or could even trigger a regional war similar to that of Arabs against Israel in 1948,” the commentator underscored.

He once again stressed that the US seeks to aggrandize its role in the recapture of Mosul although the US Air Force did play an important role in the liberation of the city.

“Only after the resignation of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki did the US take part in anti-terror operations in Iraq.”

“Only in the past year has the US become somehow serious in fighting terrorism in Iraq, which has been due to marvellous gains by the Syrian army backed by the Russian Air Force,” he said.

The analyst underscored that Iran took part in operations against terrorists only after receiving the go-ahead from Iraqi and Syrian governments.

“By fighting terrorists, Iran seeks to keep this country from turning into the next target for ISIS militants,” he added.

He then made predictions on the future developments in the region following the defeat of ISIS in Mosul.

“ISIS will most probably change its operations from territorial wars to conventional terrorist acts, exactly similar to the ones carried out by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Mali following France’s military intervention in 2013.”

He said many have forgotten or ignored the importance of this African war against terrorism.

Iranian Math Genius Fighting Cancer at US Hospital

According to one of her relatives, Mirzakhani is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in the US after medical tests confirmed that cancer has spread to her bone marrow a few weeks ago, the Iranian Haft-e Sobh daily reported.

Maryam’s parents travelled to the US on Monday to join their daughter and her family and take care of them.

Mirzakhani had been diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago, a year before she set the record of the first ever woman to win the prestigious Fields Medal, also known as the Nobel Prize of mathematics.

The medical team has put the genius mathematician under intensive care to treat her third recurrence of cancer.

The 40-year-old mathematician, currently a professor at Stanford University, was the first Iranian woman elected to the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in May 2016, in recognition of her “distinguished and continuing achievement in original research.”

With past honorees, including renowned physicist Albert Einstein, and inventors Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell, being a member of the organization is considered to be as one of the highest achievements for scientists in the United States.

Born in 1977 in Tehran, Mirzakhani was raised in the Iranian capital. As a brilliant teenager, she won gold medals in both the International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong 1994), in which she scored 41 out of 42 points, and the International Mathematical Olympiad (Canada 1995) with a perfect score of 42 out of 42 points, ranking her first jointly with 14 other participants.

The math genius received her Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Iran’s prestigious Sharif University of Technology in 1999. She later went to the US to further her education, earning a PhD degree in mathematics from Harvard University in 2004.

She became full professor of mathematics at the age of 31 in 2008 at Stanford University where she is currently lecturing.

Mirzakhani received Blumenthal Award from the American Mathematical Society in 2009. She was also awarded the 2013 biennial Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize in Mathematics by the American Mathematical Society, and garnered the 2014 Clay Research Award from the Clay Mathematics Institute.

But the most important of all her awards is the 2014 Fields Medal that she won in recognition of her contributions to the understanding of the symmetry of curved surfaces. This medal, commonly viewed as the highest honor a mathematician can receive, is given every four years to mathematicians under the age of 40, by the International Congress of the International Mathematical Union (IMU).

Mirzakhani’s research interests mainly include Teichmüller theory and ergodic theory. About her mathematical approach to developing new proofs, she has said “it is like being lost in a jungle and trying to use all the knowledge that you can gather to come up with some new tricks, and with some luck you might find a way out.”

Mirzakhani is married to Jan Vondrák, a Czech theoretical computer scientist who works at IBM Almaden Research Center. They have a daughter named Anahita.

VP Blasts US Deportation of Iranian Cancer Scientist

Speaking to Tasnim on Wednesday, Sattari said Iranian cancer researcher Mohsen Dehnavi and his family were denied entry to the US “under unconventional pretexts” despite obtaining all legal documents related to cooperation with Harvard Medical School as a visiting scholar.

“Though such incidents will not have any (harmful) effect on the scientific course of the country’s (Iran’s) researchers, they’d lead to frustration and lack of synergy among researchers when it comes to scientific cooperation,” he deplored.

Dr. Dehnavi, who had travelled to the US with his family on a valid visa, was sent back to Iran two weeks after US President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban came into force.

On Monday, the Iranian nanotechnology expert was denied entry to the US, along with his wife and three children, and detained at Boston’s Logan international airport after US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers deemed him “inadmissible” to the US.

The researcher, 32, was traveling to the US to work as a visiting scholar at Boston children’s hospital, which is academically affiliated with Harvard Medical School, according to the Guardian.

Iran Gas Deal with Total Continues to Stir Controversy

Newspapers on Thursday, July 13, widely covered the remarks made by Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh about the gas deal with Total in an address to the Parliament on Wednesday. The huge deal has sparked huge controversies since it was signed earlier this month.

‘Zanganeh Strongly Defends Total Deal’, ‘Endless Controversy’, and ‘Opponents of Total Deal Back Off’ were among the headlines used to cover the controversial deal.

Pro-government papers mostly picked positive headlines to highlight the cancellation of a triple-urgency parliamentary motion to stop the deal with Total, and described Zanganeh’s defence of the contract as a victory for Rouhani’s government.

Critics of the government, however, looked at the same issue from a different point of view and used critical and even harsh headlines to rap MPs for accepting the gas deal.

The Siasat-e Rooz and Kayhan newspapers claimed that Iranian officials have violated the law by signing the deal with Total.

Resalat, however, adopted a softer stance and only covered the remarks made by Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani who declared a committee composed of Judiciary and Parliamentary representatives will oversee the deal with Total.

Iran Locates Sites for Tidal Power Generation

The woes of using fossil fuels, including its pollution of the environment, are no secret any more, said Massoud Sadri-Nasab, the director of a state-funded project titled Identifying Potential Sites for Producing Energy from Tidal Currents in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea.

“Most of the countries in the world have taken steps towards achieving renewable energies. The tide is one the main sources of these energies,” he noted, according to a Farsi report by the Mehr News Agency.

He went on saying that some regional countries like India and Pakistan have already launched projects to generate renewable energies.

Sadri-Nasab said Iran is surrounded by two seas in the north and south which can be used for generating energy.

“We have already studied the ebb and flow of the regional waters in 10 sites and at the end recognized 5 of them as the best sites for generating energy.”

The project director said Khor Musa in the south is the best site for electricity production.

“Imam Khomeini Port next to the port cities of Pol and Kaveh are respectively the other best sites for energy generation,” he said.

On the tide in the Imam Khomeini Port, he said the water in this region rises and falls at least twice per day.

According to Sadri-Nasab, the Imam Khomeini site is potentially capable of producing 60 to 80 megawatts of renewable electricity.

“The produced electricity has its own purchasers in the region especially because the site is close to a free petrochemical zone and Imam Khomeini Port,” he said.

Documents Show Saudi, UAE Back Al-Qaeda, ISIS

Qatar has revealed documents which show Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) support al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorists in Yemen, reports the Lebanese Al Mayadeen news network.

The diplomatic papers which leaked out of the Qatari Embassy in Washington were handed over to Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. They show Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and Emirati heir to the throne Mohammed bin Zayed back some al-Qaeda and ISIS kingpins in Yemen.

According to the papers, the deputy US Treasury secretary for terrorism affairs has said that bin Salman and bin Zayed were in constant contact with Yemeni Ali Abkar al-Hassan Ali and Abdallah Faysal Sadiq al-Ahdal, whose names are on the US list of people linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist group.

The documents bring to light details about the activities of the two top al-Qaeda leaders as well as Saudi intelligence chief Khalid bin Ali al-Humaidan’s direct financial support for Ali Abkar to purchase required equipment and deliver it to ISIS members.

The US official has voiced concern over bin Salman’s links with ISIS and other terror groups without coordination with the White House.

He also speaks of Washington’s discontent with the expansion of al-Qaeda in Yemen and adjacent countries.
