Iran’s Leila Hatami among Best Actresses of 21st Century

“Asghar Farhadi’s Iranian tale of feuding parents in the midst of a divorce and the impact on their child may have won the director a well-deserved Oscar, but Leila Hatami deserved one, too,” the IndieWire wrote about Farhadi’s A Separation and Hatami’s performance in the film.

“She plays a woman keen on escaping the country’s oppressive laws by fleeing elsewhere, and when her husband won’t budge, she decides to move on anyway. The courts stand in her way — but that’s just the start of their problems, as a showdown with hired help takes a grim turn that complicates the family’s conundrums on a whole new level,” it added.

“Hatami gives the movie a commanding center as a determined woman keen on taking control of her surroundings even as they slowly close in on her. She exudes desperation but never takes it to histrionic extremes,” the report said.

“Much about the success of the performance extends from frustrated glances and baffled reactions as the court and other accusers continue to heap discomfort on her life. However, her resilience adds a transcendent dimension to the role on par with Farhadi’s nuanced script. She’s the key engine in the movie’s rage against the system,” the IndieWire noted.

During her 20-year acting career, Hatami has played in over 30 films and two TV series and won awards at local and international festivals.

She has served as a jury member in several foreign film events, like the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

Juliette Binoche for her performance in ‘Certified Copy’ directed by the famous Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016) is also included in the website’s list with no particular order or numbering.

Kirsten Dunst for her performance in ‘Melancholia’, Scarlett Johansson for ‘Under the Skin’, Emmanuelle Riva for the French movie ‘Amour’, and Marion Cotillard for ‘La Vie En Rose’ are some other famous actresses on the list.

Turkey, Mexico, Pakistan Keen to Import Iranian Vaccines

Speaking in a ceremony in Tehran, Qanei said during early years of his tenure, Iran used to import vaccines from other countries but today the country has made huge progress in vaccine production so much so that other countries like Turkey, Mexico and Pakistan have asked for Iranian vaccines.

“As Mexico has confirmed, Iranian-made BCG vaccine are among top vaccines of this type,” he noted, according to a Farsi report by the Isfahan Metropolis News Agency (IMNA).

He went on saying that the quality of Iranian-made vaccines of livestock type is also promoting day by day.

Qanei expressed the hope that Iran would return to its golden years of vaccine production in the world.

“Today, Iran’s Pasteur Institute has managed to attract the attentions of other countries’ Pasteur institutes for its working models,” he added.

He said in the coming months, representatives of over 15 countries will gather together in Iran to discuss Iran’s plan to fight age syndrome, also known as Sudden Onset Aggression (SOA).

New Head of Expediency Council Hails Rouhani’s Anti-Trump Speech

The new members and chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council held their first meeting on Saturday, September 23.

During the meeting, the new chairman, Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi, blasted the US president’s recent anti-Iran remarks in his UNGA address, and described Trump as ‘mentally unbalanced’ and ‘paradoxical’.

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, he referred to Trump’s allegations as ‘worthless’ and ‘ugly’, and said President Rouhani’s response to those allegations was ‘courageous’, ‘decisive’, and ‘very appropriate’.

The Expediency Council is an administrative assembly appointed by Iran’s Leader and was created upon the revision to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran on 6 February 1988.

It was originally set up to resolve differences or conflicts between the Iranian Parliament and Guardians Council. Members of the council are chosen by the Leader once every five years.

School Year in Iran Starts after Rouhani Rings Opening Bell

Iranian academic year began on Saturday during an opening bell ceremony held in Tehran attended by President Rouhani.

Concurrent with the start of the new school year in Iran, 146 educational projects came into operation.

About 1,300,000 first grade students have started their school year.

Students in Iran go to school for 10 months a year, or about 200 active days, from September to June. The average number of students per classroom is 20. From ages 7 to 18, boys and girls are educated separately.

Beginning at age 7, all students must pass a yearly exam in order to move to the next grade level. Students in primary school learn about hygiene, basic math and science, reading, and study skills.

Iran Can Attract $3.5 Trillion worth of Foreign Investment: CBI

Valiollah Seif

“Given its geopolitical standing in the Middle East as well as the current investment opportunities in various fields and the young and educated population, Iran has the capacity to attract over $3,500bn in foreign investment within the next two decades,” he said.

In an address to the financial heads of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation in Turkey, Seif also referred to the Islamic banking capacities and said with their great performance in the face of the recent world recession, the Islamic banks have managed to attract the attentions of many across the world to their financial mechanism.

“The mechanism is free from usury and this in turn makes it capable of working as a guarantee against grave risks and a facilitator for financial exchanges,” he was quoted as saying in a Farsi report by the Entekhab news website.

Seif said the focus of the Islamic banks on the real sections of economy instead of bonds has made them less vulnerable against economic shocks across the world compared with other banks.

He also referred to the current financial instability in the developed countries and said today strengthening of multilateral as well as regional financial ties can play a key role in restoring stability to the global economy.

“Amid the current instable conditions, the OIC as the second largest international organization after the United Nations can contribute to efforts to tackle the current economic problems in the world,” he said.

He also highlighted the efforts made after the signing of the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers to expand ties between Iranian and European banks and expressed hope the efforts would lead to more foreign investments in Iran.

US Claim that Iran Helping Terrorists Ridiculous: Larijani

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani rejected Washington’s allegation that Iran is helping terrorists and said, “This is the most ridiculous remark today. Are you blind, and don’t you see it is only Iran that is standing up to ISIS in Iraq and Syria?”

“How is it possible that Iran help ISIS and terrorists, and at the same time stand up against them? Is such a move sensible?”

“They (the Americans) themselves know that they are talking nonsense in a bid to sway public opinion around the world, but they won’t succeed because Iran has chosen its path prudently and will tread that path resolutely,” the top parliamentarian added.

He then touched upon plots by the global hegemony against Iran, saying hegemonic powers and their cronies have never wanted to see tranquility and calm in the country.

“The US president [Donald Trump] says blatantly that Iran is problematic. We deem it necessary to tell him that it has been you (the US) who have never stopped making trouble over the past 40 years,” Larijani said.

He said documented evidence exists that the White House was supporting former Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein during the eight year Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s.

He said there is evidence that the US provided Baghdad with intelligence and direct or indirect military assistance throughout the war.

Larijani also touched upon the downing of an Iranian airliner over the Persian Gulf by a US warship back in 1988.

He said the US president should be ashamed of himself as his country has taken so many actions against Iran, and now he has opted to try another anti-Iran move.

The parliament speaker said Trump’s words are nonsense, wrong and hollow.
