Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri’s visit to Syria and First Vice-President Es’haq Jahangiri’s trip to Turkey grabbed the headlines on Saturday.

General Baqeri in his visit to Syria visited the front lines of Aleppo and reviewed the latest situation of fight against terrorists. He also met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and delivered the letter of Iran’s Leader to him.

In his visit to Istanbul, Jahangiri attended the Developing-8 Summit and warned of plots to disintegrate the region in his meetings with Turkish officials. A deal between Tehran and Ankara to use national currencies, instead of US dollar, in bilateral trade was among other results of the trip covered by Iranian newspapers.

The nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers (known as JCPOA) also remained a top story in today’s papers. Pro-government media once again highlighted the EU’s support for the nuclear deal, and stressed that the deal is sustainable and operational even without the US.

On the other hand, conservative papers and critics of Rouhani’s government, particularly Kayhan, reflected the remarks made by British, French, and German officials who called for negotiations over Iran’s missile program and regional presence, and concluded that Europe is following the same path of US, looking for re-negotiation of JCPOA and receiving further concessions from Tehran.

The UAE’s appointment of an Iranian Baloch woman as the minister of science also hit the headlines.

Ali-Akbar Velayati, an international aide to the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, says the majority of Iraqi people favour the integrity of their country.

“Fortunately, with the prudence and farsightedness of the Iraqi prime minister, government and parliament, the conspiracy to disintegrate Iraq orchestrated by Zionists and supported by the Americans was foiled with the bloodless recapture of Kirkuk,” said Velayati, who is a member of the Expediency Council.

“This indicates the prudence of the Iraqi government, the country’s people, army troops and Popular Mobilization Units forces,” he added in a Farsi interview with Tasnim.

“They managed to win back Kirkuk, which is an important city and where Arab Kurds, Shiites, Turkmens and Sunnis have been living alongside each other peacefully for years,” Velayati noted.

He said the recapture of Kirkuk rid them of the “artificial scheme” to bring about the secession of the Kurdistan region from Iraq.

“The majority of Iraqi people want the integrity of their country. Although Barzani was seeking to implement a plan dictated to him from outside, Iraqi people have paid due regard to their national interests and are seeking to maintain the territorial integrity of their country,” he said.

“God willing, we will witness the progress of the government and people of Iraq, which has the most commonalities with us as its neighbor,” he noted.

He said Iran will not hesitate to offer any kind of assistance that the legitimate governments of Iraq, Syria and Lebanon may demand to advance their development and national interests.

“Gone are the days of the United States’ influence and presence in the region, and Trump is struggling to no avail,” Velayati noted.

He said US authorities are disgraced in the world.

“The Americans should identify their faults. The best way to get rid of failures is to return to their country and let people in the region determine their own destiny through interaction with one another,” he underlined.

Iran President Proposes New Ministerial Picks to Parliament

Reza Ardakanian has been named as President Rouhani’s pick for Ministry of Energy. Rouhani’s earlier pick Habibollah Bitaraf failed to receive a vote of confidence from Iranian lawmakers back in September.

Ardakanian, an international expert in management of water resources and environment, holds a PhD degree in Water Resources Management from Canada’s McMaster University.

He is the Founding Director of the UN University’s Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (known as UNU-FLORES).

He has been on the boards of various international programmes/organizations such as the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme, the UNESCO Institute for Water Education, the International Hydropower Association, and the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security.

A faculty member at Sharif University of Technology, Ardakanian formerly held a number of national offices in Iran, including Deputy Energy Minister for Water Affairs (2001–2005).

Rouhani’s other ministerial pick is Mansour Gholami, who has been proposed as the new science minister. The Iranian president had not picked anyone for the post when he proposed his cabinet to the Parliament.

Currently the dean of Hamadan’s Buali Sina University, he holds a PhD degree in Agriculture from Australia’s University of Adelaide.

According to Iranian MP Behrouz Nemati, the Parliament will confirm it has received the names of the two ministers tomorrow, and will later discuss their qualification.

Iran’s Jalilvand Wins Gold Hugo at Chicago Film Festival

Jalilvand won the prize in the New Directors Competition of Chicago Film Festival. The slate recognizes emerging talents in filmmakers presenting their first or second feature films.

In the previous edition of the festival, Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman had won the Silver Hugo Special Jury Prize.

‘No Date, No Signature’ earlier claimed two awards at the Horizons section of the 74th Venice Film Festival in Italy. The movie bagged Best Director Award for Jalilvand and Best Actor Award for Navid Mohammadzadeh.

After receiving his prize at Venice, Jalilvand said, “I live in a country whose people believe when you pray for others, God first smiles at you and answers your prayers, so please pray for me that after getting this prestigious award, I do not get proud and never forget that cinema first is to make me a better person before turning me into a better filmmaker”.

‘No Date, No Signature’ was first shown at the 35th Fajr Film Festival in February, where it received 12 nominations and won three awards for best director, best supporting actor and best sound mixing. It is Jalilvand’s second feature film and tells the story of a forensic doctor who one day at his office comes across a child’s body and feels responsible for his death.

The 104-minute film has Amir Aghaee, Navid Mohammadzadeh, Hediyeh Tehrani, Zakiyeh Behbahani, Saeed Dakh and Alireza Ostadi in the cast.

Hollywood Reporter’s Deborah Young believes the movie is “filmed with great sensitivity and style and superbly acted,” and said that “its story zeroes in on the class conflict between the rich and the poor”.

Young has also hailed Mohammadzadeh’s performance, calling him a “versatile young actor” who dives into a hot-tempered role as the grief-stricken father. “His furious visit to the chicken factory turns into one of the film’s most dramatic and effective scenes,” she wrote.

On the other elements of the movie, she has written, “the film is a visual pleasure, shot in elegant, nearly black and white images highlighted with faint traces of colour. Sets and costumes are effective in creating characters and setting the stage for the unfolding drama, matched by subtle musical comment”.

Jalilvand debut directorial work ‘Wednesday, May 9’ won the INTERFILM award at the 72nd edition of the festival in 2015.

Iran Not to Be First Side to Breach Nuclear Deal: Official

“We won’t be the first (to) withdraw from the deal… We will be committed to our obligations. We will not be the first who violate the agreement,” Araqchi told reporters in Moscow on Friday, RT reported.

He added that Iran would “react” to those who quit the agreement.

Senior Iranian officials, including Araqchi and Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi, have traveled to the Russian capital to attend a seminar titled “A Review of 25 Years of Iran-Russia Nuclear Cooperation & the Horizon Ahead”.

Earlier, Araqchi said the US government’s “irresponsible approaches” have created a new condition for the deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He added that the JCPOA is not a bilateral agreement between Iran and the US, adding that the historic nuclear deal is an international accord endorsed by the United Nations.

In a major confrontational stance against Iran on October 13, US President Donald Trump refused to certify the multilateral deal on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said he will choose not to certify that Tehran is complying with the agreement.

Iran Should Reap All Benefits of Nuclear Deal: Austria FM

In a Saturday phone conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, underlined the need for all parties to the JCPOA to remain committed to the deal, and reaffirmed Vienna’s support for its implementation.

He also stressed that Iran should be able to reap all the benefits of the nuclear deal.

Zarif, for his part, congratulated Kurz on the victory of his party in Austria’s parliamentary elections and wished him success in his new post, the chancellor of Austria.

The two sides also exchanged views on ways to enhance bilateral ties, the implementation of, and other issues of mutual interest.

Iran’s Top General Meets Iranian Advisors in Frontline near Syria’s Aleppo

“The life of terrorist groups is coming to an end,” said Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri during a meeting with military advisors and armed forces involved in battles against terrorists in Syria, ISNA reported.

The senior military official further described “unity” and “exemplary coordination” among the Syrian army and its allied forces as the key factors behind the “successive” gains they have made against the terrorists.

Baqeri further expressed hope that the Syrian forces and allied fighters will continue to hold the upper hand in the fight against the Takfiri militants.

Iran's Top General Meets Iranian Advisors in Frontline near Syria's Aleppo

Since his arrival in Syria on Wednesday, the Iranian general has held talks with senior Syrian military officials.

On Thursday, he also met with President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, where the two sides exchanged views on the battles against terrorism.

Iran, along with Russia, has a military advisory mission in Syria aimed at strengthening its army on the battlefield against terrorism. Moscow has also been providing air cover to Syria’s ground offensives. Syrian forces are also receiving assistance from fighters of Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement.

Backed by their allies, Syrian government forces have managed to deal heavy blows to terrorist groups, which have been wreaking havoc on the Arab nation since early 2011.

University of D-8 Countries to Be Built in Iran

In the final declaration released after the conclusion of a D-8 Summit in Turkey’s Istanbul, the member states of the Developing-8, including Turkey, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, hailed the construction of a joint university in Iran.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared that students from all the D-8 member countries will study at this university.

The 9th Summit of the Developing Eight Organisation for Economic Cooperation took place on October 20, 2017, in Istanbul, Turkey.

During the summit, the D-8 member states agreed to use their national currencies when doing business with each other.

“D-8 countries conduct a great deal of trade between each other. When making these purchases, they will be able to purchase goods by using their own currency. No need to involve dollars. D-8 countries will be able to do this for themselves,” Erdoğan said, emphasizing that using national currencies will boost trade and economies.

They also called for expansion of the D-8 group, and declared that the number of its member states will be increased to 20.

“The Developing Eight (D-8) needs to gain more visibility. We cannot leave our future to the mercy of a few actors. We are advocates of an organisation in which all countries of the world, regardless of size, have an equal say,” said Erdoğan.

The D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, is an organisation for development co-operation among its member states.

The objectives of D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation are to improve member states’ position in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at international level, and improve standards of living.

The combined population of the eight countries is about 60% of all Muslims, or close to 13% of the world’s population.

Iran Condemns Deadly Terror Attacks in Afghanistan

In a Friday statement, Qassemi expressed sympathy with the Afghan government and nation and offered condolences to the families of those martyred in the attacks.
“Savage terrorists and ignorant Takfiris who have faith in nothing and do not know anything about humanity once again targeted the oppressed and innocent people of Afghanistan with their blind and loathsome attacks,” he noted.
“The sole objective of these terrorists is to cause religious rifts and deepen insecurity in the neighbouring country of Afghanistan.”
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will stand by the resisting government and nation of Afghanistan until the complete eradication of violence, crime, terror and insecurity there in spite of the opposition of some trans-regional powers,” Qassemi underlined.

Henna Grinding: Ancient Iranian Profession, Tourist Attraction

Henna grinding (locally known as Mazara) is one of the ancient professions in the central Iranian province of Yazd. Henna grinding dates back to more than seven centuries. Henna grinding originally goes back to merchants from Yazd who did business with tradesmen from India, Pakistan and the Persian Gulf countries. They used to grind not only henna, but other spices such as pepper, cinnamon, ginger, etc.

At the moment, the industry exists only in Yazd province because it requires a specific climatic condition. Henna grinding must be done away from direct sunlight. Henna must be ground in a completely hot and dry atmosphere. In Yazd, there are numerous shops where henna grinding is done. The shops, which are around 200 years old, are a major attraction to domestic and foreign tourists.

As for the origin of the word “Mazara,” “Maz” means “crushing wheel,” which rolls over henna leaves or other spices and grinds them. In the past, the Maz was moved by strong men, camels or similar animals.
