Iran’s Regional Influence Result of Making Right Choices: FM

Addressing a group of Iranian expatriates living in Italy on Thursday, Zarif said, “Iran is a country with endogenous security, legitimacy, development and progress, and has overcome all problems and crises by relying on its own people.”

“Iran’s influence in the region is because it has not supported Al-Qaeda, Saddam Hussein, Daesh (ISIS), Nusra Front, and similar groups,” the Iranian top diplomat said, adding that Iran has made right choices.

“Iranian nationals, wherever they are, remain Iranian and their hearts beat for their country. Iranian expatriates are representatives of the honourable nation of Iran, and the foreign ministry is proud to serve the knowledgeable community of Iranian expatriates,” he added.

Zarif, who is on a one-day visit to Italy, also took part in a gathering of thinkers at Rome’s Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) earlier in the day.

During the meeting, Zarif outlined the Islamic Republic’s stances on the Iran nuclear deal, its relations with Europe, fight against terrorism, and regional issues.

The Iranian top diplomat also replied to the questions raised by other participants.

Another top story was the ongoing efforts to resolve the problems of those who had deposited their money in illegal financial institutions. The government, the parliament, and the Judiciary are working to settle the problems after the institutions went bankrupt and people lost access to their money.

Real Madrid Ex-Captain Raises Funds for Iran Quake-Hit People

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck villages and towns in Iran’s western province of Kermanshah on November 12, killing over 500 people and injuring thousands.

Since then, international sympathies and contributions have been pouring in.

Earlier, American world and Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling Jordan Burroughs extended condolences to the families of the victims of the recent deadly earthquake in Iran.

Iran Denies Reports It Refused to Issue Flight Permit for Bulgarian Plane

“Reports that Iran did not issue a permit are not true, whatsoever,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said in a statement on Thursday, rejecting the reports by some foreign media outlets suggesting Iran had declined to issue a permit for an aircraft carrying Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov to pass through the Iranian airspace.

“After the Bulgarian embassy in Tehran presented its official request for a permit for the plane carrying the respected premier of that country, the flight permit was issued,” the spokesman noted.

Qassemi said the pilot made a mistake while announcing to the control tower the flight information and the code of the permit already issued to the aircraft, and that was the reason why the plane was not identified by Iranian air traffic controllers.

He expressed regret over the incident, saying, “The announcement of wrong information as well as contradictions in the information and the flight permit code could have been due to the changes made by the pilot in the last moments.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has one of the safest air transit routes in the region and in the whole world, and civilian aircraft keep passing through it (Iran’s airspace). Definitely, Iran’s airspace is always open to airplanes coming from friendly countries like Bulgaria, which has very good relations with Iran.”

Iran Dismisses US VP’s ‘Baseless’ Accusations

Bahram Qassemi

In a Thursday statement, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said, “The US officials’ move to repeat baseless accusations against Iran reveal either they have intentionally closed their eyes to the reality of ISIS’ huge defeats in Iraq and Syria or they are deeply shocked by the collapse of the terrorist group and their loss of control over the territories in the region.”

“Accusing Iran of sponsoring terrorism by the US officials comes as the Islamic Republic of Iran has always viewed the security of the region as its own security.”

Qassemi said it is more than five years that Iran has responsibly stood by the nations and governments of both Iraq and Syria with the main goal of preserving the regional peace and security.

“We remained steadfast in our fight against terrorism to witness today, along with the concerned people and victims of the killings, violence and terrors of ISIS in different parts of the world, the eradication of the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.”

The spokesman stressed no individual or state can deny the constructive and positive role of Iran in fight against the ‘nasty phenomenon’ of terrorism in the region and the whole world.

Qassemi also referred to the deceptive approach of the US towards the Middle East, ‘which is based on sowing the seed of divisions among the regional states’, and said the approach has led to growing insecurity, expansion of terrorism and increase of potential and current regional tensions.

“Regardless of the baseless, worn-out, and invalid accusations levelled by the US officials, the Islamic Republic of Iran still maintains that dialogue, cooperation and mutual respects among regional states are the only way to cleanse the Middle East of terrorism, tensions and catastrophic and destructive wars.”

“Meanwhile, we believe it is the only option available which can guarantee the security and stability of the regional nations in the near future,” he added.

The spokesman recommended that the trans-regional states either play a constructive and effective role to end the current plight in the region or stop causing rift among the regional states and abandon their policy of coercing and creating artificial threats among regional states, which consequently increases mistrust among them.

“Undoubtedly, establishing peace and security, respecting the sovereignty of the regional states, refraining from interference in the domestic affairs of others, fighting against terrorism, and avoiding double-standard policies, all in all, end up in the interest of all regional and world states,” he concluded.

Qassemi’s remarks came after US Vice-President Pence referred to President Trump’s decision to attempt redefining the terms of the Iran nuclear deal, saying, “We will no longer tolerate Iran’s support for terrorism across the region and across the entire world.”

In an address to an event in New York organized by the Israeli mission to the United Nations and the World Jewish Congress on Tuesday, Pence stressed the US will not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon.

Iran’s Parliament Supports Boosting Economic Ties with Italy

Mohammad Reza Pour-Ebrahimi, the head of the Economic Commission of Iran’s Parliament, said the history of relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Italy, which enjoy a rich historical, cultural and civilian background, proves how both countries are interested in commonalities.

“Diplomatic relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Italy in more than one and a half centuries have always been developing despite some ups and downs. The ties between the two countries are among the few that have such a historical background.”

“In recent years, diplomatic relations have always been maintained, and the two sides have been trustable partners for each other,” ICANA quoted the MP as saying in a Farsi report.

Pour-Ebrahimi also added that bilateral relations, despite the adoption of unfriendly stances by some countries towards Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, have been at a good level, and high-level talks have been held between the presidents, vice presidents and foreign ministers of the two countries.

“According to the data provided by Iran’s Customs, in the past ten years, the largest volume of goods trade between the two countries (imports and exports) reached over $ 2.3 billion, which was halved after the imposition of sanctions. Fortunately, it seems that in the last few years this has stopped and trade between the two countries has regained its upward trend. It is expected that with the efforts of political and economic activists, the level of Iran-Italy trade will surpass this figure to reach an acceptable level.”

He also noted that Iran expects the international community, especially the European Union and Italy, which has a history of long-standing friendship with Iran, to take more solid steps to implement the JCPOA and remove barriers in doing business activities. He further stated that there are some problems and restrictions in the banking and financial areas that are not related to the nuclear deal, and prevent the normalization of the conditions in this area.

“Iran’s Parliament is responsible for fundamental policies of the country and plays a major role in developing economic relations with other countries. As a legislative body, the Parliament has always adopted two approaches: to boost and develop the private sector, and to support foreign investment. It has also passed laws to achieve these goals,” the MP went on to say.

Pour-Ebrahimi also pointed out that as productive investment serves as the main engine of economic growth and development in countries, the Parliament has sought to attract, encourage, support and facilitate the flow of foreign capital to the country through the adoption of the Law on the Promotion and Protection of Foreign Investments.

“Tax exemptions, visa facilitation, non-commercial risks coverage, placing no limitations in terms of the  amount and type of investment, allowing foreign state-owned companies to invest, referring commercial arbitrations to the international bodies, facilitating the process of issuing licenses and other things, were among the incentives and facilities that are foreseen in this law.”

He once again stressed that the Parliament’s support for private sector activities in the domestic and international arena can be a significant point for the development of relations between the two countries saying that this capacity must be used to expand and economic relations between Tehran and Rome.

Iran Determined to Fight Cell Phone Smuggling: Minister

According to the minister, regulating the cell phone market in Iran has its own costs, adding the smugglers began to stigmatize anyone who enters the fray to make the market regulated.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, he said, “They can proceed with their stigmatization, but we won’t allow them to continue their smuggling.”

According to a Farsi repot by IRNA, Azari Jahromi also stressed smuggling of cell phone can erode the public’s trust in the government.

“We are determined to implement the plan of registering the cell phones imported into the country because most of these phones are smuggled.”

He went on to say smuggling of cell phones will also deprive Iranian users of appropriate after-sales services.

“The smuggling of cell phone has led to the violation of ownership rights as well.  Meanwhile, with such a huge amount of smuggled cell phones in the country, we cannot put pressure on the cell phone produces with over 40 percent of Iranian market’s share to offer the required software needed by the Iranian users because when they see their products are distrusted easily, they see no reason to accept our demands,” he noted.

Azari Jahromi also added smuggling of cell phones has caused his ministry to lose its full control over the market.

Earlier this year, a business official told Financial Tribune that each year 12.5 million cell phones are brought into Iran illegally, depriving government coffers $350 million in tax revenues.

Chairman of Iran’s Imports Federation, affiliated to Iran Chamber of Commerce, Hossein Qaravi said, “Our assessments show mobile phones smuggled into the country in a year are worth almost $2.5 billion.”

“Demand in the market is for nearly 14 million cellphones per year. According to official data, less than 10% of this number enters legally,” Qaravi said.

Iran’s total annual imports are in the region of $50 billion. It is highly disconcerting to see that smuggled cell phones account for a massive 5% of the nation’s total imports about which officials have talked too often but done nothing to stop or punish the smugglers

France Urges Saudi Arabia to Stop Funding Terrorist Groups

Macron and Bin Salamn

Saudi Arabia finances groups overseen by the Mecca-based Muslim World League, which for decades was charged with spreading the strict Wahhabi school of Islam around the world.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman recently claimed he is going to cleave to a more open and tolerant interpretation of Islam.

“He never did it publicly, but when I went to Riyadh (this month), he made a commitment, such that we could give him a list and he would cut the financing,” Macron said during an interview with France 24 television.

“I believe him, but I will follow up. Trust is built on results,” Macron added.

The head of the Muslim World League told Reuters last week that Bin Salman’s focus was aimed at annihilating extremist ideology.

“We must wipe out this extremist thinking through the work we do. We need to annihilate religious severity and extremism which is the entry point to terrorism,” Mohammed al-Issa said in an interview.

Water Resources Discovered under Earth’s Hottest Spot

Aghakouchak, an associate professor at the University of California, is one of the most renowned researchers and experts in hydrologic sciences and has managed key research projects in the field of hydrology, including drought.

Water Resources Discovered under Earth’s Hottest SpotThe results of his surveys have been published in well-known magazines.

In an interview with the Persian-language Khabar Online news agency, the researcher weighed in on a whole range of issues related to his expertise, including reports that he has discovered subterranean water resource in Iran’s Lut Desert.

Aghakouchak said he along with a research team had toured the desert several times to conduct research work.

He says they learned that underground water resources existed in some areas in Lut, but that, “We don’t know the volume and size of these desert water resources.”

He says the Lut Desert is one of the “exceptional” places in the world and has “special features.”

“From a hydrologic point of view, [the desert] has been identified as the hottest place on earth,” he says.

Highlighting that water consumption is on the rise in today’s world, the researchers said measures should be adopted to meet people’s need for water such as investing in new technologies and improving the consumption pattern.

Aghakouchak recently won the prestigious 2017 Hydrologic Sciences Early Career Award of the American Geophysical Union. He is the first Iranian who has won the prestigious award.

Without Iran’s Support, Baghdad Would Have Collapsed: Iraqi General

“Iranians stood by us as military advisors within a mechanism agreed with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi. Today we have a comprehensive security establishment equipped with the required factors to achieve victories,” Al-Amiri said.

In an interview with Alforat TV Channel on Wednesday, Al-Amiri touched on the US Congress’ decision to put the names of some members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units in its list of terrorists and said “we don’t care about the issue because what we are doing is just to defend the dignity of our country.”

He went on to say the Congress’ decision was made with the aim of protecting Israel’s interests in the region.

“The US Congressmen have closed their eyes to what is going on in Iraq. We call on the US military forces as well as its military advisors to leave our country as soon as possible,” he said, as quoted in a Farsi report by Tasnim.

He stressed fight against ISIS had been focused mainly on eradicating the Takfiri group. “We entered the war following a Fatwa (religious decree) by Iraq’s top Shiite cleric Seyyed Ali Sistani. If it had not been for the Fatwa and the following rise of the Iraqi nation, the Iraqi forces would not have the fighting spirit to counter the ISIS threats. The victory was achieved thanks to the Fatwa and the Iraqi public’s uprising.”

The Iraqi politician called the victory of PMU a victory for all Iraq, saying the popular forces will remain united based on the top cleric’s Fatwa.

The secretary general of Badr Organization also said the PMUs are not allowed to fight against the enemies outside Iraq. “Our presence in such wars depends on the agreement of the chief-commander of armed forces.”

He also referred to the fall of the ISIS in Iraq and said the end of military operations against the terrorists does not mean that the group no longer exists because there are still some inactive terror cells in Iraq that should be eliminated.

“Our mission after military action is to engage in intelligence activities to find the elements of ISIS and eliminate them wherever they are,” he added.

Al-Amiri stressed the Iraqi intelligence forces including PMUs are not legally allowed to take part in the elections. “The PMUs commanders can enter elections but only after resigning from their military posts otherwise they can only vote.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the Iraqi politician referred to the latest verdict of the Iraqi Federal Court to declare illegal the results of the recent secession referendum in the Kurdistan Region and said the ruling of the court is a good opportunity for beginning of talks between the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional government but the KRG views the verdict negatively.

Al-Amiri also said the central government in Baghdad has not yet taken control of the border areas. “This has already hampered talks between Baghdad and the KRG because some of the main border crossings are still under the control of KRG and Baghdad is angry with it.”

“The federal government insists on nullifying KRG referendum results and expanding security in all border crossings. Meanwhile, Baghdad has not yet managed to take full control of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports. KRG rejects the presence of federal forces in the border crossings. We have prudently succeeded to expand security in Kirkuk without any bloodshed. Now we hope to restore security in the border crossings soon,” he concluded.
