Iran President Visits Quake-Hit Areas, Promises Help in Reconstruction

Upon arrival in Kermanshah, Rouhani offered his condolences on behalf of the Iranian nation to the quake-stricken people of Kermanshah.

He said the government will give reconstruction grants and loans to the quake-hit people to help them rebuild their houses as soon as possible.

He also vowed that the Iranian people and his administration will stand by the people affected by the deadly earthquake.

Rouhani also wished that his next visit to the province would be aimed at opening construction projects.

The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has also sent a delegation to the province. The delegation includes the Leader’s representative in the Iranian Red Crescent Society and his representative in Kermanshah who arrived in the province on Tuesday to personally monitor the relief and rescue operations and the degree of damages caused to the region.

They will finally submit a report to the Leader on the quake-hit areas and the people’s problems there.

Rescue operations are underway in the western regions. According to the latest figures, at least 430 people have lost their lives and at least 7,370 others sustained injuries in the tremor. Some 12,000 homes have also been completely destroyed in the incident.

“We keep the families of those who were killed, and injured, in our thoughts as well as the communities that have suffered damage to homes and property,” she added.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also expressed their regret over the deadly incident.
Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, and President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev extended their condolences in separate messages to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Egypt and Jordan also condoled with Iran over the earthquake and offered sympathy to the bereaved families of the victims.

Earlier on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah condoled with Iran over the tragedy.

Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Azeri President Ilham Aliyev, Irish President Michael Higgins, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini were among other high-ranking officials who offered sympathy to the Iranian nation.

In a message on Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif appreciated the messages of sympathy.
“Heartbreaking images from the earthquake damage and loss of life in Kermanshah (and in Iraq). We are grateful for global expressions of sympathy and offers of assistance. For now, we can manage with our own resources. Many thanks for all offers and we will keep you posted,” he tweeted.

“Iran FM’s Visit to Central Asia Had Major Achievements”

“The trip to Uzbekistan was aimed at attending a conference on security in Central Asia in which five central Asian countries and some officials from other countries and international organizations participated,”Qassemi said in his weekly press conference on Monday, adding that the visit was made at the proper time.

Qassemi went on to say that the focus of the conference was on the development of the fight against terrorism, and FM Zarif made a good speech.

“On the sidelines of the conference, two important meetings were held with the President and the Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, and the two sides discussed a wide range of issues and the Uzbek government was willing to cooperate.”

Qassemi also noted that the two sides agreed to send delegations to pave the ground for President Rouhani’s visit to Uzbekistan in order to sign a number of MoUs. He pointed out thata new chapter has opened in the ties with Uzbekistan.

“In Uzbekistan, FM Zarif also met with EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini. At this meeting, Zarif and Mogherini held talks on the JCPOA and Iran’s relations with the European Union,” said Qassemi.

“In Tajikistan, we had two good and detailed meetings with the President and the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, in which the issues were explicitly raised and relative agreement was reached.”

Qassemi also mentioned that the two sides have agreed to send delegations within the coming months adding that Iran-Tajikistan Joint Commission will hold a meeting in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe this Tuesday, which would be chaired by the two countries’ Ministers of Energy.

“The current talks that we have begun with Tajikistan could result in a meeting between the presidents of the two countries. Given the commonalities of the countries, the level of relations can be improved to a more appropriate level, which can happen after the visit of delegations,” he underlined.

Iran Declares One Day of Mourning after Quake Tragedy

The Iranian government has issued a statement saying that the tragic earthquake in the west of the country, which resulted in the death, injury and displacement of a number of fellow countrymen in this region, especially in Kermanshah province, deeply grieved the Iranian nation.

“The Iranian government offers condolences over this tragic incident to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the Iranian people, especially the devoted people of Kermanshah Province, and the survivors of this sad incident in the west of the country.”

“The government of Iran also expresses sympathy to the wounded and wishes health for them.In order to pay respect to all the victims and sympathize with their honourable families and all the affected ones, November 14is announced as a day of public mourning across the country,” reads the statement.

At least 430 people were killed and over 7,000 injured after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the border of Iran and Iraq late Sunday.

The epicentre of the quake was in the city of Azgeleh, but the highest casualties occurred in the city of Sarpol-e Zahab.

The quake was so powerful that the tremors were felt as far away as Turkey, Kuwait, Pakistan and the UAE.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were among the first world leaders who condoled with Iran over the tragic incident.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev in separate messages expressed sympathy with the Iranian nation and government.

Irish President Michael Higgins and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni were among other officials who offered their countries’ condolences.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also extended his “deepest condolences” to the people of Iran and said “the UK stands ready to help the victims and the recovery efforts.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini in separate statements expressed their preparedness to help the relief and rescue operations in Iran.

The UN resident coordinator in Iran Gary Lewis also conveyed “sincere condolences to Government and People of Iran following last night’s deadly earthquake on western border” and said, “The UN will assist if requested.”

“[We are] considering options for support to Iran if needed. Members of the international diplomatic community also present in support.”

Meanwhile, the Times of Israel reported that Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz has offered his sympathy to Iran.

“My condolences to the people of Iran and Iraq over the loss of human life caused by the earthquake,” said Katz, who is also transportation minister.

With successive aftershocks still rumbling through western Iran more than 18 hours after the massive earthquake, the province of Kermanshah, hit hardest by the temblor, declared three days of mourning.

After a terrible night and ongoing blackout, Sarpol-e Zahab is receiving more rescue team and sniffer dogs searching for survivors buried under the rubble.

Officials say the access to rural areas is still limited.

Field hospitals have been set up in the quake-hit areas.

Hogan, who is in Iran at the head of a high-ranking economic delegation, discussed issues of mutual interest with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi at the Iranian foreign ministry’s building.

During the Monday meeting, Hogan stressed the necessity of removing obstacles to banking relations, and said, “The EU has already tried to encourage European banks to establish relations with Iran, and will continue to do so.”

“The EU is serious in further development of its relations with Iran in all fields including agriculture and food products.”

He also pointed to EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini’s visit to the US, which was aimed at convincing senior US Congressmen to back the nuclear deal.

“Regardless of what the US president says, the EU will continue to encourage the country to implement the JCPOA,” he added.

Sarmadi, for his part, referred to Iran-EU relations after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and underlined the need for immediate resolution of banking problems.

“We expected the EU to not only support the nuclear deal, but also encourage all parties to live up to the deal and refrain from spoiling the atmosphere of business and economic ties with Iran,” he added.

Pictures and videos posted on social networks show that a number of people in Tripoli and other parts of northern Lebanon are burning the posters of Mohammad bin Salman.

Tasnim News Agency in a Farsi report has quoted some Lebanese media as saying that Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk has contacted North Lebanon Governor Ramzi Nahra, asking him to work immediately on removing all posters in the northern areas.

Machnouk condemned the act, adding that such an event was “suspicious at a sensitive moment, when some are working to create such incidents in order to drag the country into further tension.”

He also emphasized that such moves do not represent the people of northern Lebanon and Tripoli.

Although there are some speculations about Saad Hariri’s arrest in Riyadh, one week into his resignation, it has almost been proven that the Lebanese Prime Minister is under pressure in Saudi Arabia.

Now, the authorities and parties in Lebanon with different political inclinations have called on Riyadh to modify its behaviour towards the prime minister of their country.

Meanwhile, Lebanese President Michel Aoun has stressed that he will not wait for more than a week to determine the fate of Saad Hariri saying that he will be forced to ask the international community to decide on the issue.

India's First Wheat Cargo Arrives in Afghanistan via Iran

The shipment of almost 15,000 tonnes of wheat dispatched from India’s western port of Kandla late last month reportedly reached the Afghan province of Nimroz, which borders Iran, on Saturday.

The media quoted Manpreet Vohra, India’s ambassador to Kabul, as saying that the shipment demonstrated the viability of the new route that connected India with Afghanistan through Iran.

“The ease and the speed with which this project is already working is evident from the fact that as we are receiving the first trucks of wheat here in Zaranj, the second ship from Kandla has already docked in Chabahar,” Vohra was quoted as saying by news agencies.

He said there would be seven shipments between now and February and a total of 110,000 tonnes of wheat would come to Afghanistan through Chabahar. The official added that the shipments were part of a promised 1.1 million tonnes of wheat as India’s “gift” to Afghanistan out of which 700,000 had already been sent to the country.

The new route would create a unique opportunity for India to send its goods to landlocked Afghanistan through a safe route. It would to the same effect enable Afghan merchants to export their commodities – mainly fruits and vegetables as well as nuts and minerals – to global markets through Chabahar.

India signed a deal with Iran in 2003 to develop the same port through an investment that could amount to $500 million.

Located on the confluence of the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman in southeastern Iran, Chabahar is India’s first foreign port project. Once completed, the project would enable India to send its goods Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond.
