Iran Protests: Minister Calls on People to Pursue Demands Peacefully

Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli

Commenting on the recent demonstrations in some Iranian cities over high costs of living and economic issues, Rahmani Fazli hailed people on Sunday for expressing their opinions under lawful methods.

The cases of vandalism and violation of citizenship rights have nothing to do with the peaceful demonstrations, the minister added, praising the police and security forces for exercising self-restraint during the violent rallies.

Rahmani Fazli then said resorting to violence and vandalism would undermine security in the country and disrupt the process of production and job creation, reminding the vandals and arsonists that they have to pay the price for their conducts.

Calm, obedience to law, unity, coordination and cooperation are the best approaches for pursuing the public demands and ensuring security, the minister added.

His comments came against a backdrop of demonstrations in some cities of Iran over the past days to complain about price hikes and economic woes.

According to Article 27 of the Iranian Constitution, “public gatherings and marches are allowed so long as the participants do not carry arms and are not in violation of the fundamental principles of Islam.”

Following the peaceful civil rallies, the Western and a number of Arab media outlets tried to portray the protests as a political uprising against the Establishment.

Iranian officials maintain that people have the right to stage protests to express their opinions, as long as the rallies comply with the legal conditions.

Police have arrested a number of demonstrators that were trying to damage public property in the gatherings.

Official Confirms 2 People Killed in Iran Protests

Habibollah Khojasteh-Poor, the deputy governor-general of Lorestan province for political and security affairs, told the IRIB News Agency on Saturday night that two people were unfortunately killed during an illegal gathering in the city of Doroud earlier in the day.

“On Saturday afternoon, a group of people poured into the streets of Doroud after a call by certain counter-revolutionary groups, and this led to clashes in which two of the citizens were killed,” he noted.

Khojasteh-Poor stressed that the trace of Takfiri [extremist] and anti-Establishment groups as well as foreign agents can be found in these clashes, adding that the investigations revealed the clear role of foreign agencies.

He emphasized that the Iranian police and security forces did not fire a single bullet during the deadly clash.

“We wanted the gathering to end peacefully, but unfortunately it ended up in clashes due to the presence of those groups and individuals, and led to the deaths of two of those attending the rally,” he added.

Several Iranian cities have been the scene of anti-government street protests in recent days. The protesters are demanding a better economic situation and better living conditions, but certain anti-Iran media and foreign officials are trying to make the demonstrations political and provoke people to chant anti-Establishment slogans.

Telegram Blocks Anti-Iran Channel for Promoting Violence

Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi has, on his Twitter page, reacted to the activities of Amad News, a Telegram channel which has been promoting violence, spreading lies and painting a black picture of the situation in Iran.

Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi“A Telegram channel is urging people to incite insecurity and use home-made bombs and arms. Isn’t it time to stop promoting violence?” said the minister addressing the Telegram founder Pavel Durov.

The Telegram director, in turn, responded to Azari Jahromi’s tweet.

“Calls for violence are prohibited by the Telegram rules. If confirmed, we’ll have to block such a channel, regardless of its size and political affiliation,” wrote the director on his Twitter page.

Later on Saturday, Telegram closed the Amad News channel, with over 1.3 million followers.

The move came after Amad News tried to provoke Iranian people to use violent actions against the Islamic Establishment amid the recent protest rallies in Iran.

Several Iranian cities have been the scene of anti-government street protests in recent days. The protesters are demanding a better economic situation and better living conditions, but certain foreign and anti-Iran media and officials are trying to make the demonstrations political and provoke people to call for a so-called “regime change”.

Iranian Centenarian Leading Simple Life with Octogenarian Wife

Iranian Centenarian Leading Simple Life with Octogenarian WifeAli Rajestari, the 121-year-old Iranian pensioner, lives in an old village in the south of the country. He has one son, six daughters, 33 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.

The centenarian does all his jobs himself, reports the Persian-language Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), which has had an interview with him and his family.

The yard of his house is marked by old tall palms trees. His house has a blue-coloured wooden ceiling. He leads a simple life. His 84-year-old wife is hearing-impaired and visually challenged.

The man’s only son told IRNA that not all of her mother’s children survived.

“My father has had four wives, and my mother was his fourth one. Of course, none of his first three wives could have children, and that’s why my father married my mother. My mother, too, had 18 deliveries, but, so far, only my six sisters and I have survived,” says the son.

Rajestari used to be a fisherman until he was 80 or 90 years old. After the Fishermen’s Insurance Law was passed, he started paying insurance fees for 10 years and then was put under insurance coverage. He has been a pensioner ever since.

He sings songs with a very pleasant local accent. The songs he sings suggest he has not enjoyed life very much.

One of his daughters says that his children visit him every day and do not let him feel lonely.

At the end the interview with them, IRNA’s team and the man along with his family members had their picture taken as a memento.

Iran Warns Nationals against Visiting Turkey on New Year’s Eve

Iran Warns Nationals against Visiting Turkey on New Year's Eve

“Dear compatriots, given the state of emergency in Turkey and the warnings of security officials in the country, you are requested to avoid making unnecessary trips and attending gatherings [in Turkey],” the embassy said in a statement on Thursday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The statement also called on the Iranian nationals to immediately contact the embassy in Ankara or consulates in Erzurum, Istanbul and Trabzon in case of any security problem.

The statement came as Turkey said it will more than double the number of police officers on duty in Istanbul and cancel or ban public celebrations in key districts of its largest city on New Year’s Eve for security reasons.

On Dec. 31, 2016, a man with an assault rifle shot dead Turks and visitors from several countries at the exclusive Reina nightclub in Istanbul.

A year on, 37,000 police officers and some 4,000 gendarmes who maintain security in rural areas will be on duty over New Year, Istanbul governor Vasip Sahin told reporters on Thursday, according to Reuters.

Rouhani Vows to Tackle Livelihood Problems as Top Priority

“The government, under the auspices of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and relying on the public support, will implement the general policies of Resistance Economy with a special focus on production and employment, while regarding the resolution of people’s livelihood problems as its top priority,” president.ir quoted Rouhani as saying on Thursday.

Resistance Economy is a set of principles aimed at making the country immune to economic wars waged by foreign powers, through curbing the economy’s dependence on oil export revenues, improving productivity and reducing the government role in the economy.

It was first proposed by the Leader in 2011, amid the tightening of economic sanctions against Tehran by the US and its allies over unproven allegations that Tehran intends to build nuclear weapons.

Rouhani’s remarks came a day after a renewed call by the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei for the full enforcement of Resistance Economy by the government to ensure the national economy would weather imminent fresh US sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Time to Take Action

“Officials must pay more attention to resistance economy and stop only talking about it, and know that resistance economy is inconsistent with unfettered imports and weak domestic production,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei has frequently advocated resistance economy in his speeches this year, particularly since the controversial US President Donald Trump came to power to harden the line on Iran.

Trump has revived the nearly forgotten US mantra that “all options are on the table” when it comes to Iran, and has imposed various sanctions to increase pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Rouhani highlighted the importance of preserving national unity and convergence among the three branches of government in the face of the hostile, divisive US policies.

“Any move that stokes rifts among government branches and organizations, magnifies short-lived weaknesses and problems and creates disillusion in the public opinion about the country’s future is a move in the opposite direction and along the path plotted by Iran’s ill-wishers,” the president said.

In his Wednesday speech, the Leader cautioned incumbent and former officials not to play into the hands of the Islamic Republic’s adversaries by making groundless allegations against state bodies.

“Those who had been controlling government facilities and those who hold management posts are not entitled to play the role of opposition. They should be responsible [for their own record].”

He was apparently referring to recent remarks by former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accusing the judiciary authorities of corruption, as well as senior officials in Hassan Rouhani’s administration blaming Ahmadinejad for the economic woes facing the country.

“Of course our judicial system is not faultless and I’m not unaware of deficiencies of the judiciary and government, but we should see positive and negative points together,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“Iranians Pay No Heed to Trump’s Opportunistic Comments”

Bahram Qassemi

In a statement on Saturday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the “cheap, worthless, and invalid” comments recently made by US President Donald Trump and the US State Department, saying, “The Iranian people pay no heed to the opportunistic claims of American officials, particularly President Trump.”

“The great nation of Iran for sure has closely watched the active participation of Mr Trump in violating the human rights of Palestinian, Yemeni, and Bahraini people,” he noted.

“Moreover, they definitely remember the US president’s malignant hostility towards the educated people of Iran, the restrictions he imposed on the entry of Iranians to America, and the arrest of many Iranian nationals living in the US on fabricated pretexts.”

Therefore, he added, the Iranian nation views the opportunistic and deceptive support of these officials for gatherings in some Iranian cities in recent days as nothing but the US administration’s hypocrisy and deception.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Constitution has provided democratic frameworks for legal support of people’s civil demands, and it is totally possible to pursue such demands within the framework of law,” he added.

“The Iranian people are the biggest assets behind the country’s security and development,” Qassemi noted, adding that the people’s turnout in the elections with the aim of deciding their fates and the active participation of the entire nation in monitoring and criticising the country’s state bodies guarantee the prosperity and progress of Iran and the Islamic Revolution.

“The Iranian nation’s insightful presence is the most important factor behind the country’s resistance to ill-wishers,” he said, adding that the Trump administration has proved to be the head of those ill-wishers.

Qassemi finally referred to 70 years of interference in Iran’s domestic affairs by various US administrations, including the US’ role in plotting and leading the 1953 coup against Iran’s national and legal government, Washington’s full support for the Pahlavi regime’s crackdown on Iranian freedom-seekers, and its all-out support for the criminal regime of Saddam Hussein during the eight-year war on Iran, and said, “The US officials are not in a position to show sympathy for the great and wise nation of Iran.”

Iran Not to Let Enemies Fulfil “Regime Change” Dream: Top General

“The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will not allow the realisation of the nefarious and evil dream of weakening and changing Iran’s ruling system and the Islamic Revolution,” said the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Iran, Major General Mohammad Baqeri in a statement on Friday.

The statement came as certain foreign officials, in meddlesome comments, tried to provoke the Iranian people against the Islamic Establishment.

Following a series of protest rallies in a number of Iranian cities, where people expressed their protest at the country’s economic woes, US President Donald Trump said, “Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime’s corruption and its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad. Iranian gov’t should respect their people’s rights, including right to express themselves. The world is watching!”

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also tried to take advantage of the popular protests to pursue their own so-called “regime change” policies.

This comes as hundreds of thousands of supporters of the Islamic Republic on Saturday poured into streets on the 8th anniversary of the “9 Dey Epic”, the day when pro-Establishment rallies in 2009 put an end to the post-election unrests.

Here are photos of the Saturday demonstrations across Iran retrieved from various news agencies:

Disabled Iranian Devises System to Make Life Easier for Invalids

Vahid Rajabloo, a disabled Iranian man, has devised a startup system which can make life easier for the disabled. The 30-year-old man has 98-percent disability and does things with only 20 percent of his right hand’s ability.

He was born with the genetic disease SMA, and gradually lost the power of his limbs. However, he has been able to earn a living for 11 years now. He is making ends meet by writing programs and designing webs. In a competition of startups, he finished third by presenting his own startup system.Disabled Iranian Devises System to Make Life Easier for Invalids

In a Farsi interview with the Mehr News Agency, Rajabloo has explained how he launched the initiative.

He has studied up to the second grade of high school only and was not able to continue his education because of his physical condition. Then he began working with his computer and learned programming on his own before entering the job market.

Before starting school, his disability was between 30 to 40 percent, which has reached 98 percent now.

“Only 20 percent of my right hand works, and I use it a lot,” he says.

He has been designing web pages for 7 years now. “I work alone. I cannot do team work because I’m not able to commute.”Disabled Iranian Devises System to Make Life Easier for Invalids

He says the system he has devised brings together different businesses which are ready to offer services to the disabled.

“For example, I can call the barber and ask him to come to my home.”

According to Rajabloo, he was also invited to an event where companies and businesses are called on to use disabled people as employees.

“They asked me to take part, and I came in third among 22 startups that had participated in the event,” he adds.Disabled Iranian Devises System to Make Life Easier for Invalids

Rajabloo also teaches computer programming. “I charge ordinary people, but teach the disabled for free.”

He says he seeks to further promote his startup system to better serve invalids.
