“Iran May Launch Attacks on Terrorists at Syrian Government’s Request”

Amir Abdollahian

Amir-Abdollahian, a senior advisor to Iranian parliament speaker, noted that Iran will remain in Syria as long as the Syrian government decides to use the Islamic Republic’s advisory assistance.

According to a report by ISNA, he made the comments on the sidelines of a commemoration ceremony for the martyrs of 2017 terrorist attacks on the Iranian Parliament.

“In the years passed, the Americans were practically on the side of the ISIS and supported terrorism to fulfil their goals, but the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hezbollah and the resistance axis seriously fought against terrorism. Of course, Russia also contributed to the fight against terrorism in Syria.”

“US President Donald Trump explicitly lied in a declaration about the US strategy for 2018 claiming that they have eliminated ISIS,” added the Iranian diplomat.

He also noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran and its allies have fought against terrorism in Syria and Iraq, and the world should be grateful to Iran and the resistance movement.

Earlier in the day, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad declared that Iran has been invited to help Syria defeat terrorists, and thus its presence in the Arab country is a legitimate one.
“The Russians were invited by the Syrian government, their existence in Syria is a legitimate existence, and the same holds true for the Iranians,” Assad said in an interview with Britain’s Mail on Sunday.

“While for the United States, the UK, it is illegal, it is an invasion; they are breaching the sovereignty of Syria – a sovereign country. So, their existence is not legal at all, it is an illegitimate existence,” he added.

Araqchi Assures MPs that Joining FATF Won’t Pose Security Threat to Iran

Speaking at an open session of the parliament on Sunday, Araqchi defended a bill on Iran’s accession to the FATF and said the bill is one of the international instruments to fight against terrorism.

Iran, itself, is a victim of terrorism, he said, adding that last year, the parliament building was targeted in a terrorist attack by Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) militants.

The Iranian diplomat went on to say that terrorism has countless international networks and that without joining international conventions, fighting terrorism and uprooting its financial sources would be impossible.

During the open session of the parliament, the MPs agreed that debates on the country’s accession to the FATF be put on hold for two months.

They decided that dealing with the FATF issue would be shelved until results of negotiations with Europe on saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) become clear.

Established in 1989, the Financial Action Task Force is an inter-governmental body with the purpose of setting standards and promoting effective implementation of legal, regulatory and operational measures for combating money laundering, terrorist financing and other related threats to the integrity of the international financial system.

Trump Proved Ayatollah Khamenei Was Right: Kerry

Speaking in an interview with Switzerland’s Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper, Kerry said President Trump‘s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal is surely “the biggest strategic mistake” since the Iraq war and one of the most significant mistakes in American history.

Because this decision is an agreement in which Iran lived up to its commitments and restricted its nuclear program, but Trump isolated America, he noted during the interview which was conducted on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Those isolated in Iran who stood up for this agreement [reformists] will also be isolated, Kerry noted, stressing that it will have a very negative impact on Iran’s domestic policy and strengthen the hardliners.

It also increases the risk of a war that could involve the US, he said. “That is irresponsible.”

The US ex-diplomat said his country has chosen the strategy vis-à-vis Iran that was once pursued by President Bush against Iraq.

And that’s a strategy of regime change. As history shows, this does not come out well, he added, blasting Trump for choosing a “counter-productive, self-destructive strategy.

He further noted that the Iran nuclear deal’s fate now depends on the Europeans’ decision.

Europe must take action and give Iranians the opportunity to keep their economy running. Otherwise it will be very difficult, he added.

Kerry said the nuclear deal was, to some extent, supposed to be a stepping stone to Tehran’s better relations with other countries in the world, but that did not work out because of the European banks’ refusal to resume financial transactions with Iran.

They were afraid of being sanctioned by the United States with secondary sanctions despite the agreement, he noted. “That kept Iran from reaping the full benefits of the JCPOA.”

“I say it quite bluntly: The Iranians stuck to the agreement, but we did not,” he stressed.

Kerry described the current situation as “a very dangerous” one, with a real potential for conflict, saying that Iran will not just sit around and watch it being slapped by the other parties to the deal.

“It’s the fault of President Trump who unleashed all this. He had every opportunity to start negotiations with Iran. Now the Iranians will not do this anymore, because Trump has proven before their eyes that America cannot be trusted.”

“This is one of the saddest aspects of the matter: Trump has confirmed everything that Iran’s revolutionary Leader [Ayatollah] Khamenei feared about America,” he added.

Sari; Ancient Hub of Iranian Culture, Tourism

Resket Tower is located 40 kilometres south of Sari in a village with the same name in Dodangeh County. In the year 231 in solar calendar, a mega meteorite collapsed in the Farim area, known as Espahbod-e-Sherwin. Some researchers consider the tower a multipurpose memorial near the site of the fall of this meteorite.

Most historians have called Sari “the ancient city of myth” and refer to it as the capital of the orange blossoms in the north of the country.

The historical city is more than six thousand years old. People from Sari are called Saravi. The climate of Sari in the summer is mild and damp, and in winter it is relatively cold and dry.

The southern mountainous parts of this city have long and very cold winters. Historic buildings, the daily markets, parks, old neighbourhoods, and the city’s entertainment centres are among its important tourist attractions.

The most significant sources of income of rural people in this city have been livestock breeding, fishing and farming. Rice and citrus are the most famous products of Saravi farmers in the north of the country. At the beginning of the rule of Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar and before Tehran, Sari was for some time the capital of Iran, and during the first period of the Pahlavi regime, it was the first city where the construction of the national railway began.

What follows are ISNA’s photos of Sari‘s tourist attractions:

Iran, Mongolia Call for All-Out Expansion of Mutual Cooperation

“Tehran is ready to develop and strengthen its economic and trade ties with Mongolia, and all the capabilities and opportunities existing in the two countries should be used to deepen the bilateral relations,” Rouhani said at a Sunday meeting with his Mongolian counterpart, Khaltmaagiin Battulga, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China.

He further emphasized that closer economic cooperation between Tehran and Ulaanbaatar serves the interests of both nations, adding, “We encourage the Iranian private sector and businessmen to participate in Mongolia’s development projects.”

Battulga, for his part, hailed the relationship between the two countries as developing and said Ulaanbaatar is determined to strengthen its relations with Tehran in all fields, the economy in particular.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Rouhani has traveled to Qingdao in China’s eastern province of Shandong to participate in the SCO summit at the official invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

During his trip to the East Asian country, Rouhani is accompanied by a number of senior officials, including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, Central Bank Governor Valiollah Seif, Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Massoud Karbasian, Vice-President for Economic Affairs Mohammad Nahavandian, and the president’s Chief of Staff Mahmoud Vaezi.

The SCO was formed in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to curb extremism in the region and enhance border security.

Last year, it formally approved membership for India and Pakistan. The total population of the alliance’s member states now exceeds 3 billion.

The intergovernmental organization seeks to strengthen mutual trust and good-neighborly ties between the member countries, contribute to regional stability and facilitate cooperation in different sectors, including political, trade, economic and energy issues.

The SCO counts four observer states, namely Iran, Afghanistan, Belarus, and Mongolia. It has six dialogue partners, including Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka.

Several papers today covered the ongoing visit to President Hassan Rouhani to China, where he held several meetings with his Russia, Pakistani, Afghan, Belarusian, and Mongolian counterparts, and addressed a meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Also a top story was the isolation of US President Donald Trump in a recent meeting of the G-7 group of industrial countries.

The Iranian Parliament’s Sunday meeting to vote for or against the country’s controversial accession to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) also received great coverage.

Terrorist Cell Smashed by IRGC in Northwestern Iran

The public relations office of the IRGC Hamzeh Seyed al-Shohada Base said in a statement on Saturday that the forces killed all members of the terrorist team “tied to global Arrogance” in the Oshnavieh border region in Kurdistan Province on Friday evening.

The statement said that the terrorist group had planned an attack in northern Iraq before crossing the border into Iran.

“Elements of the terrorist team received orders from the heads of terrorist groups in northern Iraq and had precise plans to carry out terrorist and anti-security actions after infiltrating the country,” the statement read.

Iran’s northwest has repeatedly witnessed attacks by terrorist and anti-Islamic Republic elements.

In June 2017, 40 members of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group who intended to carry out acts of terror inside Iran in the holy month of Ramadan were identified and arrested in the cities of Piranshahr, Sardasht, Mahabad, Bukan and Takab in West Azarbaijan Province.

Iranian Netizens Shocked, Saddened by Death of Anthony Bourdain

The famed cook, writer and host of the CNN’s award-winning series “Parts Unknown” killed himself Friday in a luxury hotel in France.

Bourdain visited Iran in 2014, as part of his tour around the Middle East for his TV show.

Iranians took to Twitter and Instagram on Saturday to praise Bourdain for offering a different picture of their country to the usual Western media reports and government rhetoric.

Commentators praise him for his ability to tell stories that went beyond the superficial picture painted by the daily news cycle over the course of his TV career.

After visiting Iran, he came back with a confusing picture of the country, as what he experienced was so at odds with what he understood of the country from the vision portrayed by the US government, CNN reported.

“Because the Iran you see from the inside, once you walk the streets of Tehran, once you meet Iranians, is a very different place than the Iran you know from the news”, Bourdain wrote on his trip.

“Nowhere else I’ve been has been so extreme between what one sees and feels from the people and what one sees and hears from the government,” he wrote.

In the episode CNN aired on his visit to Iran, Bourdain says, “Forget about the politics if you can for a moment. How about the food? The food here is amazing.”

“Iranians are the descendants of Ancient Persia, an empire of poetry, flowers, the highly influential culture that goes back thousands of years.”

“The road back to Tehran. Along the way, reminders of just how far back this culture goes. The ruins of ancient caravansaries, highway rest stops from when armies, merchants, traders traveling by camel, by foot all passed along these same routes. This right here a stop on what was once the Silk Road extending all the way to China.”

“In this part of the world, whatever your background, bread is a vital, essential, fundamental, and deeply respected staple.”

“It is worth mentioning, whatever you think, wherever we are now, that Saddam—supported by the US government and with our full knowledge — used sarin and mustard gas on hundreds of thousands of Iranians. Less known in America, known and felt by everyone in Iran.”

“Iran does not look and does not feel the way I had expected. Neither East nor West, but always somewhere in the middle.”

Lawmakers Ratify Iran’s Accession to Palermo Convention

136 MPs voted for the bill, 89 voted against it, and 11 abstained.

The previous version of the bill was amended after the Guardian Council announced there are some mistakes in the document. The newly passed bill, which was approved amid harsh protests by certain conservative lawmakers, still needs to be approved by the Guardian Council to be signed into law.

According to a report by Jam-e-Jam Online, the final approval of the Palermo Convention bill will allow Iran to join the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC).

The UNTOC, adopted by General Assembly resolution 55/25 of 15 November 2000, along with its protocols, is the main international instrument in the fight against transnational organized crime. It opened for signature by Member States at a High-level Political Conference convened for that purpose in Palermo, Italy, on 12-15 December 2000 and entered into force on 29 September 2003.

The Convention represents a major step forward in the fight against transnational organized crime and signifies the recognition by Member States of the seriousness of the problems posed by it, as well as the need to foster and enhance close international cooperation in order to tackle those problems.

States that ratify this instrument commit themselves to taking a series of measures against transnational organized crime, including the creation of domestic criminal offences (participation in an organized criminal group, money laundering, corruption and obstruction of justice); the adoption of new and sweeping frameworks for extradition, mutual legal assistance and law enforcement cooperation; and the promotion of training and technical assistance for building or upgrading the necessary capacity of national authorities.

Iran Says Time Running Out for Europe to Preserve JCPOA

larijani

Addressing lawmakers in the Parliament on Sunday, Larijani said, “If Europe believes it has what it takes to preserve the nuclear agreement, it should announce its decision more explicitly and more quickly.”

According to Fars News Agency, he also referred to comments made by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei regarding the JCPOA, and said, “His warnings about the nuclear issue was not only significant for talks with Europe, but laid the groundwork for parts of the nuclear industry to become active.”

“The Leader’s orders were very timely and appropriate at this sensitive juncture. Mr [Ali-Akbar] Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization [of Iran], should act on those orders decisively, and [Parliament’s] National Security Commission should constantly follow up the issue to make sure the orders are carried out,” said Larijani.

He further touched upon Israel’s efforts to rally support for the US, saying Tel Aviv seeks to get Europe on board with pulling out from the JCPOA.

“With the terrorists having suffered a blow in Iraq and Syria, this adventurous regime seems to be going to create another crisis in the region to cover up some of the domestic and foreign problems Israel is facing,” he noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani lashed out at recent comments by US President Donald Trump.

“The point is that they speak of imposing tough sanctions against Iran, and at the same time claim there is a need for a kind of new dialogue to settle issues,” said Larijani, dismissing the remarks as amateurish.
