Iran Leader Urges Judiciary to Prosecute Those Disrupting Economy

Speaking in a Wednesday meeting with top judges in Tehran, Ayatollah Khamenei said the Iranian people must have safe business environment and livelihood.

The Judiciary must seriously prosecute those who undermine the economic security, the Leader urged.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s comments came amid a record-breaking decrease in the value of Iran’s national currency, and protests and strikes by shopkeepers who are angry with the ongoing economic crisis.

The Leader further touched upon the international objections to the recent execution of Mohammad Salas, a Sufi dervish who had killed several Iranian policemen and was sentenced to death by the Judiciary.

Our Judiciary is currently under harshest media attacks. Using propaganda tools, they portray a murderer – who has killed several Iranian policemen and is sentenced to death after judicial procedures – as innocent and the Judiciary as cruel, he noted.

We must use professional and artistic methods to offer believable and tangible truths to public opinion, the Leader said.

These days, they use propaganda tools to make you believe whatever they want, but our state bodies underestimate the power of media tools and art in convincing public opinion, Ayatollah Khamenei added.

Iranian MPs Push for Cabinet Reshuffle amid Devaluation of National Currency

“The current economic conditions of the country necessitate efforts by the three branches of power to consolidate the Islamic Republic and lessen economic pressure on the people and prevent a plunge in their purchasing power,” said the statement, which was signed by 187 legislators.

The statement, read in an open session of parliament on Wednesday, urges the president to shore up the economic team of his Cabinet to restore people’s trust in the government.

“You are aware of the sanctions, complicated plots of this country’s adversaries and creation of a war room against Iran,” the statement said.

“Ineffectiveness of the government’s economic team has seriously contributed [to successful implementation of these plots]. The government must make thoughtful planning considering the current situation,” the statement reads.

The dramatic rise in the rate of foreign currencies has adversely affected Iranian markets.

A crowd of businesspeople in Tehran Bazaar shut down their businesses on Monday and Tuesday in protest at the price hike.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Tuesday the exchange rate problems are part of an economic war launched by the US, vowing that the nation will be able to handle the economic plots hatched by Iran’s arch-foe.

US President Donald Trump pulled the country out of the 2015 nuclear deal early March, vowing to impose the “highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

The Central Bank of Iran said on Monday that it had plans to create what it described as a secondary currency market to help ease tensions that plunged the rial against the US dollar to a record low level on Sunday.

Iran Urges Malaysia to Adopt More Balanced Policy towards Regional Crises

In a Tuesday meeting with Deputy Secretary General of Malaysian Foreign Ministry Dato’ Zainol Abidin in Tehran, Jaberi Ansari congratulated him on the recent parliamentary elections held in the country and the new Malaysian government led by Mahathir Mohamad starting its work.

The senior Iranian official elaborated on the trend of developments in the West Asia and North Africa as well as on Iran’s policies on the settlement of crises in those regions.

He also stressed Iran’s preparedness to boost cooperation between the two countries in different areas, including the resolution of regional crises.

The senior assistant to the Iranian foreign minister also touched upon the status of Malaysia and the prominent character of Mahathir Mohamad, saying Iran expects to see a balanced policy by Malaysia on the regional developments and crises.

The Malaysian official, in turn, highlighted the necessity of enhancing relations and partnership between the two countries on different fronts, saying Kuala Lumpur seeks to adopt a balanced and constructive approach vis-à-vis the ongoing crises in the Middle East.

“Iran Attaches Special Importance to Ties with Africa”

The Iranian top diplomat made the remarks in a Tuesday address to a ceremony to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the African Union’s establishment.

Zarif, who was attending the ceremony as a special guest, offered congratulations to African nations and governments on the anniversary of the AU’s establishment.

The Iranian foreign ministry is happy to be hosting the ceremony to mark the Africa Day, which is the pleasant day when Africa got rid of colonialism, he noted.

“Some African countries made sacrifices to help their other brothers and sisters achieve political independence,” Zarif added.

“This indicates their strong commitment to each other and the cause of promoting human culture and raising hopes for the progress of African people at all human levels,” he noted.

“Based on its cultural values and Islamic teachings, the Islamic Republic of Iran has joined the Africans’ celebration of their great success, and accompanies the African nations and governments in this joy,” Zarif said.

He also noted that the African people and governments have shown they make relentless efforts to improve their lives.

“In this path, they use all their facilities and capabilities to gain independence and economic development,” he said, highlighting the significance of Africa’s ties with other regions in the world and its important and special role at international organisations.

Africa’s progress in the past years has been admired by all observes, he noted, adding that several elections have been held peacefully in this continent, many regional conflicts settled through local mediation, and long steps taken for development.

He also pointed to the AU’s stances as the representative of African countries, saying, “The AU’s reactions to global and regional developments, including its support for the Iran nuclear deal, its condemnation of the use of chemical weapons, its emphasis on concerns over the US’ withdrawal from JCPOA, which violated the rules and regulations of international law, and its logical reaction to those insulting the African people show that the African nations and countries and the AU have great political understanding.

“Today we see that Africa is active in all fields to meets its needs. They seek to provide equal social opportunities for men and women, improve their economic conditions, raise the standards of living, help establish peace and stability, and promote democracy in the Continent,” he noted, praising the valuable and great measures already taken to fight against corruption.

He further reminded the participants that Iran has always stood by Africa, and attaches special importance to the continent in its foreign policy.

“My recent visits to several African countries and the meetings of joint committees and business conferences held with the countries I visited are witnesses to efforts we made to expand our relations with Africa,” he said.

“We seek to promote our business relations with Africa, and the Economic Department recently established at the Iranian Foreign Ministry attaches special importance to Africa,” he concluded.

Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) (now known as the African Union) on 25 May 1963. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world.

Africa Day continues to be celebrated both in Africa and around the world, mostly on 25 May, although in some cases these periods of celebrations can be stretched out over a period of days or weeks.

Iran Blasts Saudi-led Coalition’s Latest Airstrikes on Yemen

In a Tuesday statement, Qassemi expressed sympathy with the bereaved families of the victims of the brutal and inhumane attacks, which have left tens of innocent Yemenis, including women and children, dead and wounded.

Increased airstrikes on residential areas show the Saudi-led coalition’s desperation and failure to meet the goals they had in mind when invading Yemen, Qassemi noted.

He also regretted that certain Western countries are still providing Saudi Arabia with their arms support and reinforcing the kingdom’s arsenals while failing to take a major and serious step to prevent the Saudis and Emiratis from committing war crimes.

Qassemi called on all international bodies and organisations to preclude the two countries from committing such crimes and slaughtering the Yemeni people.

Attacking residential areas and civilian targets, and preventing international organisations and relevant authorities from offering relief and aid are in violation of humanitarian principles and rules, he added.

The Iranian spokesman finally urged the UN and countries influential in the Yemen crisis to increase their efforts to immediately stop the attacks and adopt required measures to protect the lives and security of civilians, particularly women and children.

The Saudi-led coalition launched two attacks on a residential home in the al-Dhaher district of the Sa’dah Governorate, killing four children and wounding six other children and a woman.

Also on Tuesday, at least nine civilians were killed and nearly a dozen others sustained injuries after warplanes belonging to the Saudi-led military coalition struck a bus carrying internally displaced persons (IDP) in war-battered Yemen’s western province of Hudaydah.

Yemen’s Arabic-language al-Masirah satellite television network, citing its correspondent in the area, reported on Tuesday that the deadly airstrike hit the bus on a road linking the two towns of Jarrahi and Zabid earlier in the day, adding that three of the dead had been torn to pieces beyond recognition.

The report further said that at least 11 other people on-board the ill-fated bus had been wounded in the aerial aggression.

Iran Hails Uzbekistan for Starting New Era of Ties with Region

Zarif made the comments in a meeting with Secretary of the National Security Council of Uzbekistan Viktor Makhmudov and the high-ranking politico-economic delegation accompanying him in Tehran.

During the Tuesday talks, Zarif expressed pleasure with the visit of the high-ranking Uzbek delegation to Iran, and said he is optimistic about the future of bilateral relations between the two sides.

“We are happy to see the beginning of a new and constructive era of relations between Uzbekistan and the region as well as the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

“We believe the development of cooperation between Tehran and Tashkent is in the interests of both nations and in line with reinforcing regional cooperation, maintaining peace, stability and security in the region,” he added.

The Iranian top diplomat said that contributing to the process of strengthening security, stability and economic cooperation in the field of transit in Afghanistan is among the common goals pursued by both Iran and Uzbekistan.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran wants a powerful region based on cooperation,” he added.

The Uzbek official, for his part, hailed the historical and cultural commonalities between the two countries and their common stances on regional and international issues.

“The leadership of Uzbekistan believes in [the need for] expansion of ties with Iran in all fields,” he noted, adding that Tashkent wants to boost its business ties with Tehran in a range of areas including transit, transportation, energy, culture and tourism based on the two countries’ common resolve.

He also described his meetings with Iranian officials as very constructive.

Makhmudov, who arrived in Tehran on Tuesday morning, had earlier held talks with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.
