Muslim Researchers Discuss Environmental Woes at KANS Competition

The researchers competed with each other in an event called Knowledge Application and Notion for Society (KANS), which was held at Tehran’s Amirkabir University.

The annual competition, organized by Mustafa (PBUH) Science and Technology Foundation (MSTF), looks for scientific approaches to address the problems of the Muslim World in five major fields.

One of the key topics addressed in the competition was the water and environmental issues, which have gripped the Muslim world.

The KANS is a competition in which professors, scholars and students participate to offer their own ideas in the form of videos of three to five minutes. In this way, they seek to offer solutions to community problems based on scientific methods.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review

In the first edition of this competition, most of the works were about water and environmental woes, indicating the importance of this area for scholars, professors and students.

The closing ceremony of KANS was held on November 12 at Amirkabir University. The top 15 scholars presented their works to the jury as well as domestic and international participants.

On the sidelines of the event, all participants wrote their views regarding the challenges of life and society on a wall.

Little Girl Who Survived Iran Quake Finally Gets a House

Setareh Ahmadi is an 11-year-old girl who is the only survivor of a family of six killed in the devastating earthquake that struck Sarpol-e Zahab in Iran’s western Kermanshah province and killed over 600 people.

Little Girl Who Survived Iran Quake Finally Gets a HouseThe promise that the chief of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) gave last year has come true on the first anniversary of the quake, a report by Shahrvand daily said.

One year ago when Dr Ali-Asghar Peyvandi, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, visited the quake-hit areas and saw for himself the tents set up for the quake victims and saw first-hand the situation of the people, he met a calm, young girl. On the night of the earthquake, she had stayed in her aunt’s home where her family members had a get-together. She had stayed in Sarpol-e Zahab and the rest of her family had returned to Nooshirvan.

Now, the only survivor of a family of six was standing in front of the director of the country’s Red Crescent Society.

“I don’t want a doll. I don’t even want a conex box. I want a house … in the same land that my father wanted to build one where we were going to live,” she said. It was a year ago, exactly the early days after the quake.

Little Girl Who Survived Iran Quake Finally Gets a House“A patient and resistant girl like you has every right to make such a demand,” Peyvandi had told her back then.

“I know you are in agony. I think even if I were you, I wouldn’t be brave enough to talk. It is not the Red Crescent’s responsibility to construct houses, but I promise you to build a house in the same place where your father’s house once stood …, so that you would always remember them and finally become an honour for the country,” he said.

Now, the dream of Setareh’s family has been fulfilled on the anniversary of the earthquake by the very same person who had promised to do so.

One year has passed since the quake hit, and we miss all of her family members.

US Making Big Mistake by Relying on MKO Info: Iran

Members of anti-Iran terrorist group MKO along with its guests from the US and its regional allies in its annual gathering in Paris

Jahangiri made the comment at a ceremony to inaugurate a sewage refinery in the southern Iranian city of Ahvaz on Monday.

“Since last year, the Americans had pinned their hopes on the assumption that Iran would not be able to mark the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution,” he said.

“One of the reasons they mentioned was that current Iranian officials would not be willing to celebrate the occasion. Maybe one of the reasons that caused the Americans to make a mistake in this regard was that the news source of the White House was basically the MKO,” he said.

Jahangiri said the Americans’ impression that people have taken to the streets in cities across Iran and that the Islamic Revolution is in disarray is due to the reports they receive from MKO members.

The vice-president underlined that the decisions made by the US government on Iran are based on the false and fabricated news it receives.

“US authorities make decisions that always deal a serious blow to the credibility of this country and their status on the international stage,” he added.

The top official further touched upon Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, saying the move is a loss for the Americans.

“The Americans thought they could disrupt Iran’s economy by withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and beginning [to impose] the sanctions and, hence, spoil the country’s political and social situation, but we saw the opposite happened,” he noted.

“They wanted to stop Iran’s oil exports, but failed as well, and we exported petroleum as much as we needed to,” he said.

Iran Condemns Israeli Attack on TV Station in Gaza

Bahram Qassemi

The bloodthirsty Zionist regime’s opposition to the enlightening mission of media outlets is rooted in journalists’ disclosure of Tel Aviv’s heinous crimes over the past 70 years, Qassemi said in a Tuesday statement.

The informative role played by media has always been a nightmare to the occupying regime, which so blatantly commits such a horrible crime in Gaza, he added.

The headquarters of Al-Aqsa TV station run by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas was razed to the ground on Monday in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza amid a fresh round of violence in the besieged enclave, which the world blames on the Israeli forces.

The building of Al-Aqsa TV station located in an-Nasr district, west of Gaza, was totally destroyed by the Israeli raids, footage of the attack shows.

Many local residents had reportedly fled after calls to evacuate, witnesses said. The TV station said it would resume broadcasts soon.

The raid was part of the fresh airstrikes and rocket attacks by Israeli warplanes and artillery which are targeting areas “throughout” the Gaza Strip and have so far killed several people, including a Hamas commander.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health puts the number at 10, within around 24 hours, according to media reports.

Iranian papers today widely covered a report by The New York Times which revealed a plot by Saudi Arabia to assassinate IRGC Quds Force Commander Major General Qassem Soleimani and disrupt the Iranian economy.

Also a top story was comments by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif about the opponents of Iran’s adoption of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global anti-money laundering body. In his controversial remarks, Zarif accused the critics of being engaged in money laundering.

Why Should We Take Sunburn Seriously

Severe sunburns are as serious as skin burns and may have the same general effects as blistering, swelling and fever; therefore, sunburns should not be overlooked.

The sun’s ultraviolet radiation is abundant in all three UVA, UVB and UVC bands, but due to the UV absorption in the atmosphere of the ozone layer, 99% of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the earth is the less harmful UVA band.

Among the positive effects of UVB exposure is the stimulation of the skin to produce vitamin D. It is estimated that tens of thousands of American citizens die every year only due to cancer-related deficits and vitamin D deficiency.

Why Should We Take Sunburn SeriouslyOsteoporosis also occurs due to deficit in absorption of this vitamin. However, getting too much exposed to sunlight also has its own disadvantages including sunburn.

Sunburn is a skin inflammation that results from prolonged exposure to sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet radiation.

This burn is caused by ultraviolet rays in the sun or tanning devices (solarium). Unlike thermal burns, sunburn does not appear immediately. So, when the pain and reddening of the skin begins, skin damage has already occurred. The pain is most severe 6 to 48 hours after exposure to sunlight. In severe cases, it may cause blistering and the swelling of the skin, especially in feet, is common.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review

After sunburn, some toxins are released in the body causing fever to appear as a common symptom. Exfoliation usually occurs three to eight days after exposure to severe sunlight. There are some factors that can worsen sunburn including exposure to the sun at its peak hour (10 am to 4 pm), especially in infants and children that are more sensitive than adults.

People with bright skins are more likely to get sunburns than those with darker skins. Using some medications, including antibiotics and birth control pills as well as some cosmetics could exacerbate sunburns.

The sunburn with blistering doubles the risk of cancer of the coloured skin cells called melanocytes.

Moreover, sustained exposure to sunlight can cause skin aging and wrinkles. Age spots (lentigo) are the result of skin exposure to the sunlight. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of your skin against harmful rays of sunlight, as they can become extremely dangerous in some cases and may need special ways to be treated.

Israel Razes to Ground Hamas TV Channel’s HQ in Gaza

In retaliation, the Palestinian resistance has so far fired over 400 rockets, mortar bombs, and at least one anti-tank missile from Gaza into the occupied territories, including military positions, Israeli and Palestinian media reported.

A spokesman of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, said the Joint Operations room for Palestinian Resistance has vowed to expand the range of military strikes deeper into the occupied territories.

Ashkelon is just the beginning as a million Zionist colonists may enter the range of our rockets, Abu Obaydah said in his tweet.

The Qassam Brigades also said two Israelis were killed and 19 others were wounded in its counter-attacks against Ashkelon early Tuesday.

In one of the rocket attacks, an Israeli bus in the northeast of Gaza was directly hit and exploded by a Kornet ATGM.

The Israeli military claimed in a statement that the aerial aggression was in response to the rockets and mortar shells fired against the southern parts of the occupied territories, wounding over 40 Israeli settlers, one in critical condition.

However, the international community blames the Israeli regime for the renewed violence in the impoverished enclave.

inevitability of the victory of the oppressed and in the forefront of them the conscious and resisting Palestinian people,” it said in a statement.

Russia, Jordan and an Egyptian delegation all declared Monday that Israel is responsible for the violence in Gaza.

The Russian condemnation came after an Egyptian delegation to Gaza, set up with the purpose of creating a ceasefire, placed the blame on Israel for starting the violence.

The European Union and the United Nations also urged the immediate end of rising tensions surrounding the Gaza Strip.

In a written statement, Maja Kocijancic, the spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, said that “the escalation of violence in and around Gaza during the last hours is very alarming”.

“The EU urges both parties to step back from the brink and avoid any further actions that would contribute to the escalation, put civilians’ lives at risk, and jeopardize recent efforts towards reducing tensions,” she said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the situation in Gaza “an extremely worrying situation,” stating that “the suffering of the people of Gaza is unimaginable”. The UN chief said that the tensions in Gaza should be defused as soon as possible, warning that otherwise it could turn into a “massive tragedy”.

“He (Guterres) urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint. The United Nations Special Coordinator, Nickolay Mladenov, is working closely with Egypt and all concerned parties to restore calm,” Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman for Guterres, said in a statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency security meeting with his minister of military forces and other senior Israeli military officials in Tel Aviv on Monday, a day after the Israeli raid on Gaza ignited new tensions in the region.

The flare-up came just a day after Israeli special forces infiltrated the Gaza Strip, assassinating a top Hamas commander, while subsequent Israeli airstrikes killed six others, including another commander with the Palestinian resistance movement. Reports also said that an Israeli officer was also killed during the ensuing clashes.

Tensions have been running high near the Gaza fence since March 30, which marked the start of a series of protests dubbed “The Great March of Return.” The Palestinian protesters have been demanding the right to return for those driven out of their homeland by Israeli wars and other acts of aggression since 1948.

Iran’s Largest Origami Structure Folded in Shiraz

The dinosaur has been put on display in Shiraz Sun City at a land of 100 square metres. The structure has been erected by 15 students from the Faculty of Art and Architecture at Shiraz University as part of a project headed by Reza Sarvari, a member of the Origami Society of the US.

Origami (from ori meaning “folding”, and kami meaning “paper”) is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with the Japanese culture.

On November 11, the Origami Day is celebrated in different parts of the world. In Japan, the art of folding paper has become a symbol of peace.

What follows are IRNA’s photos of the origami dinosaur of Shiraz:

Tehran City Council Elects Pirouz Hanachi as New Mayor

By securing 11 votes from the 21-member council, Hanachi was elected as the new mayor, leaving behind his main rival Abbas Akhoundi with a narrow margin.

The two final candidates had briefed the City Council on their plans for running the city on Sunday.

Hanachi was a deputy mayor for urban development and architecture, and Akhoundi was President Hassan Rouhani’s former minister of roads and urban development. The new mayor is a well-known expert in urban development and revival of historical cities.

Seyyed Kamel Taqavinejad, the head of the National Tax Administration, and Gholamreza Ansari, a former ambassador to Russia, were the other two candidates who were defeated by Hanachi and Akhoundi in the previous round of voting.

It was the reformist council’s third pick for the post since members took office last year.

The first session of the fifth Tehran City Council was held on August 23, 2017. The Council first named Mohammad Ali Najafi as the mayor, but he remained in office for almost 7 months, and then resigned due to his deteriorating health.

Samiollah Hosseini Makarem then became the caretaker and a month later in mid-May Mohammad Ali Afshani was elected as the new mayor. A few months later, a new law was passed by the parliament banning the retired to be working in state bodies. According to the law, Afshani had to leave the office by mid-November.

So, the council started the process to elect a new mayor who can run one of the busiest cities of Iran for the third time in less than two years.

Iran Knew about Saudi Plot to Kill Gen. Soleimani: FM

“Tehran had credible information on this,” Zarif said in an interview, which will be published in full on Tuesday.

His comments came after a Sunday report by The New York Times, revealing a March 2017 meeting in Riyadh to assassinate Iranian officials, namely Iran’s Major General Qassem Soleimani.

The meeting brought together businessmen that also “pitched a $2 billion plan to use private intelligence operatives to sabotage the Iranian economy,” read the Times report released.

As the meeting came at a time that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was consolidating his power in the kingdom, the report concluded that planning for assassinations, like that of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, started “since the beginning of Prince Mohammed’s ascent.”

Zarif further exemplified other atrocities by the Saudi government, including support for terrorism, attacking Yemen as well as blockadingQatar and kidnapping Lebanese Prime minister Saad Hariri.

“All the world has opened its eyes to what Riyadh is doing such as blockading Qatar, bombing Yemen, detaining the prime minister of Lebanon and the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi,” Zarif said.

This is while the US has emerged as a passionate supporter of the monarchy ever since President Donald Trump appeared in office.

Trump has also withdrawn Washington from the internationally backed nuclear deal with Tehran and re-imposed illegal sanctions on Tehran.

The Trump administration announced the sanctions on November 5 to target Iran’s banking and energy sectors with the aim of cutting off its oil sales and crucial exports.
