Is Press TV Journo Caught in Crossfire as Trump Intensifies Iran Standoff?

On January 16, Iranians were shocked to know that the US-born anchorwoman Marzieh Hashemi had been detained in the US three days earlier.

The 59-years-old widow was arrested by the FBI on January 13 at St Louis airport after visiting relatives in the New Orleans and just before boarding a plan to see her sick brother in Denver.

But it took days for the case to be publicised, as her family had been kept in dark and had no idea what had happened to their beloved one.

While the case grabbed headlines in international media, nothing was known about the reason for her confinement.

Her daughter, Sarah, who was eventually contacted by Marzieh on January 15, quoted her as saying that she was being treated disrespectfully by the US police.

They had handcuffed and shackled her, removed her hijab, and offered her only pork as a meal, which is banned under Islam.

Marzieh was suffering the same US discrimination against women, Muslims and African-Americans she had been trying to expose for decades.

Manufactured Pretext?

Further fueling suspicions and outrage, American officials did not confirm her detention until January 18.

On the day, a US federal judge formally announced the confinement in a statement, saying she is not accused of a crime, but her testimony is required over an unspecified case in Washington.

The statement said Hashemi was arrested on “a material arrest warrant” and will be released after the completion of her testimony to a jury investigating unspecified “violations of US criminal law.”

The statement did not elaborate further, refusing to mention what judge ordered the arrest and on what alleged evidence.

Material witness warrants are used to arrest potential witnesses or suspects after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, to ensure that people with knowledge of others’ crimes are available to testify, especially those with a perceived flight risk.

But Hashemi’s family said she had not been contacted by the FBI before she was detained and she would have been absolutely willing to cooperate with the agency.

Moreover, such warrants appear to be unconstitutional and illegal, according to law experts.

Ricardo Bascuas, a professor at the University of Miami School of Law, has said the US government uses such tactics when it needs a reason to arrest somebody but it doesn’t have one.

According to a Washington Post report, material witness warrants are rare, with the US courts’ records indicating only two such cases were filed last year.

Justice Department Behind Case

Following the storm of controversy over Hashemi’s detention, a US official hinted the Justice Department was behind the case.

The unnamed official told Reuters on Saturday that a US grand jury was investigating Press TV itself over charges that the station was a “propaganda outlet” and should have been registered with the Justice Department as an agent of a foreign government.

Perhaps, Hashemi, who had filmed a Black Lives Matter documentary in St Louis, was taken in for questioning in connection with the foreign registration case against Press TV.

If the channel Hashemi was working for is found to be violating the US law, Hashemi herself could face prosecution for filming a documentary in the US for the station.

On Sunday, Peyman Jebelli, CEO of IRIB World Service and the head of Press TV, responded by arguing that Press TV did not need to register in the US.

Jebelli said, “Our activities are conducted through social media and limited satellite broadcast. Why should we register Press TV with the US Department of Justice? Do all outlets with international broadcasting register in all countries?” he said.

In a similar case in late 2017, Russia’s RT was forced to register as a foreign agent in the US, after a registration case filed by the US Justice Department was about to put the channel’s US bureau at risk of blockage.

It’s unclear how Press TV would react to such a court case, as it holds no office in the US.

Even if the channel wants to register its name with the DoJ, it might not be able to do as Iran is subject to heavy US sanctions.

Big Dilemma

Anyway, assuming the US DoJ is behind the unusual case, why has it decided to act now?

Press TV was founded in 2007, and Hashemi has been working for the channel since its launch.

According to her family, Hashemi used to travel to her homeland once a year to visit her relatives, usually working on documentaries as well.

Undoubtedly, something has changed, and that change could be the Trump administration.

Hashemi’s arrest comes following two years of deteriorating relations between Iran and the US, in the wake of Washington’s stepped-up pressure campaign against Tehran.

Trump Gets Angry

The incident came right after the news came out that Iran has arrested another American citizen.

On January 9, Iran confirmed it is holding ex-US sailor Michael White at a prison.

White, who had traveled to Iran for what his relatives claim was visiting a “girlfriend” in Iran’s holy city of Mashhad, was arrested in July over espionage charges.

White is the fifth American known to be held by Iran on such charges, and the first to be arrested during Trump’s tenure.

The others are Iranian-American Siamak Namazi and his 82-year-old father Baquer, Iranian-American art dealer Karen Vafadari, and Chinese-American graduate student Xiyue Wang.

Trump could have seen the arrest of White unhealthy for his credit, seeking a tit-for-tat move or something.

To get a better grasp of Trump’s style of politics, one would only have to look at his decision to postpone House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s upcoming trip to Brussels and Afghanistan in return for her move to postpone Trump’s 2019 State of the Union address to the Congress.

During his 2016 electoral campaigns and after taking power in the US, Trump had mocked his predecessor Barack Obama for being “too soft” on Iran.

Famously, he once threatened Iranian boats would be “shot out of the water” if they inappropriately approach US warships in the Persian Gulf during his presidency.

Since coming to power, Trump has bragged about his achievements on Iran, claiming his strong-arm tactics have pushed Iran not to threaten US interests in the Persian Gulf, among other interests.

Retaliatory Move?

A clear hint about Trump’s approach towards the case could be found in remarks by unidentified US officials in interviews with CBS News earlier this month.

The US-based outlet reported on January 9, four days before Hashemi’s arrest and on the same day Iran publicised the detention of White, that it has learned “Iran floated the idea of a prisoner exchange last year”.

The outlet reported US State Department officials “have not said whether the Trump administration is willing to negotiate”, noting that contact between the two countries was cut off after Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in May.

Again, on January 16, CBS News points to the prisoner exchange issue in its article covering Hashemi’s arrest.

The outlet quoted US sources as saying that they believe Iran is holding the Americans to try to get concessions, pointing as an example to a prisoner exchange deal with Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama.

However, this time the agency claimed it was the Trump administration who had offered Iran to discuss prisoners last year, contradicting its own narrative.

“A senior administrative official told CBS News Iran turned that offer down, leaving the fate of the Americans unclear,” it said.

Childish Game

Hashemi, a familiar face on the Iranian television, could be a valuable hostage for Trump.

Marzieh is a person Trump has every reason to hate: An African-American Muslim woman who works as a journalist for Iran.

Interestingly, the way she was arrested is Trump-style: unpredictable, unmannerly, and illogical!

Has Hashemi been detained on spurious grounds to serve as a bargaining chip in talks with Iran, as Trump might believe?

If so, we ought not hope she will return home anytime soon.

However, the case would most likely turn out to be a PR victory for Iran, as the global public opinion is not a fan of Trump and his childish games.

It remains to be seen if Hashemi has fell in the crossfire of Iran-US tensions.

Perhaps more information will be revealed on Wednesday, when another hearing session on the case will be held.

Iran Condemns Suicide Attack in Afghanistan

Bahram Qassemi

Bahram Qassemi offered condolences to the Afghan government and people as well as the families of victims of this heinous crime.

The spokesman slammed any use of violence and killing, and stressed the need for dialogue as well as national understanding in Afghanistan in order to achieve peace, stability and tranquility in the country.

The Taliban militant group launched an attack on a military training centre in Afghanistan’s central province of Maidan Wardak on Tuesday.

Some say over one-hundred members of the Afghan security forces were killed. Local officials say at least 65 killed in this attack. The raid started with a car bomb explosion inside the military training centre. Afghan forces gunned down the militants after five hours of fighting.

Iran Deputy FM Holds Talks with His Polish Counterpart

Lang arrived in Tehran on Monday at the head of a political delegation for talks with the Iranian official.

During the meeting, the polish diplomat referred to the “very good” mutual relations between Iran and Poland throughout history and reiterated his country’s resolute support for the Iranian nuclear deal.

Elaborating on the upcoming conference in Warsaw, Lang said “the conference will generally discuss ways to press ahead with peace and security in the Middle East, and there will be no stance against any country including the Islamic Republic of Iran during the conference.”

He underlined that Poland maintains that Iran, as one of the main players of the Middle East, has an influential role in the regional developments.

“Our goal of holding such a conference is to contribute to efforts to resolve regional problems, and Poland as a friend country for Iran will not allow any anti-Iran move during the conference,” he said.

For his part, the Iranian official underlined that the Middle East crisis is rooted in the Zionist regime’s occupation.

“The Zionist regime and its occupational and suppressive policies are the main problem of the region and the region will not gain peace until the Palestinians are given their legitimate rights.”

The diplomat said the absence of such a significant issue on the agenda of the conference reveals its unilateral nature. “It is clear that the US is seeking other goals through holding the conference,” he noted.

Araqchi also cited the US adventurous policies as another problem of the region and said how the US can claim it is after resolving regional problems while it is seeking to destroy the Iran nuclear deal as the only fruit of diplomacy and negotiations in the sensitive region?

The Iranian diplomat then described as unacceptable the reasons put forth by the Polish government to accompany the US in holding Warsaw conference and added the Polish government should figure out the real intentions of the US by holding the conference and remain fully aware of its consequences.

Araqchi finally underlined that the Islamic Republic has always been seeking to restore peace and security to the region and has proven its intention through waging war against terrorist groups like ISIS “but we do not allow any country in the region or outside to make alliance against our interests.”

Days before heading to Tehran, Lang had called hosting the conference a “success” for his country saying “the conference has pivotal importance for the Polish-US relations. It is the expression of our strategic partnership and trust. A total of 70 states from all over the world were invited to partake in the conference.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said earlier that the Warsaw conference would focus on stability and security in the Middle East, including the “important element of making sure that Iran is not a destabilising influence.”

In protest, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Polish chargé d’affaires in Tehran Wojciech Unolt last week to provide answers as to why Warsaw had agreed to host the event.

Reports say officials from several European Union countries and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini will likely skip the conference.

The conference is to be held as part of the US growing anti-Iran campaign since the US President Donald Trump took office in 2017.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has dismissed the planned summit a “desperate anti-Iran circus.”

In a post on his tweeter account, Zarif said that “while Iran saved Poles in WWII, it now hosts desperate anti-Iran circus.” He was referring to Iran hosting more than 120,000 Polish refugees during the Second World War.

How Linear Actuators Work

Being one of the most frequently implemented in the modern mechanical industry mechanism to produce the linear motion, the electric linear actuator has a number of main components without which it would be impossible to produce and transform energy into any kind of motion. These spare parts are Motor, lead screw, acme drill nut, gearbox.

Some linear actuators also have built-in end travel limit switches, which prevent the actuator from retraction and extension to unnecessary redundant extent.

The electric motor is the heart of the electric linear actuator working principle. When working it produces the rotational motion later transformed into the linear motion. But how does it all work? The mechanism is quite simple. The gearbox connected to the electric motor reduces its rotational motion. Only a few of such gears meshed together are capable to increase the torque and thus produce much faster and better energy conversion efficiency to turn the lead-screw.

However, the role of the toothed parts meshed together is not only of increasing the speed of movement or transmitting the torque. There are also cases when the gearbox has the reduction ratio “100=1” to, on contrary, to decrease the motor’s speed. In such kind of the electric linear actuators, 100 rotations of its motor will produce just a single rotation of its lead-screw.

Consequently, every turn of the lead-screw pushes the acme drive nut. And here are where linear actuators have a wide variety of options due to their TPI (turns per inch) specification. But how to realize the principle of TPI work. Quite easy – each linear actuator has its manual where you will likely find the specific to a concrete electric linear actuator TPI index. For example, if the TPI index is 10, then for every 10 turns of the lead-screw it will push the drive nut for one inch.

Hence, we came to the three top characteristics determining the speed of the electric linear actuator: gear reduction, the speed of the electric motor and the TPI index of the lead-screw used in the linear actuator assemblage. Depending on the customer’s needs the linear actuator can be of various models with different specifications.

The function of the built-in end travel switches also cannot be underestimated. These small parts are capable to prevent the linear actuator from unreasonably fast breakage. Before this element was introduced to the inner construction design of the electric linear actuators they were tempted to exceed its physical movement limits and it often caused to the breakage of the motor.

How does linear actuator work under different conditions? A tricky question. However also can be answered quite simply. Some kinds of linear actuators are created solely for lifting, some of them, on contrary only for pulling the heavyweight. One of the brightest examples of such kind of actuators is a jack-screw actuator quite familiar for engineers and mechanics who definitely saw it more than just once. The lead-screw and the hydraulic cylinder to which it is placed both can be made for only pulling, lifting or even for both directions for generating force depending from the customer’s needs.

Thanks to its non-complicated inner construction electric linear actuators may be dense or bulky, pull or lift the heaviest or the most aerial small weights. Their work is possible due to the process of the energy transformation. The rotary motion of the motor transforms into the linear motion, the power and speed of which, in fact, can be calculated due to a simple construction of electric linear actuators.

Detained Iranian Anchor to Attend US Court Again

Hashemi was arrested in St Louis airport on January 13 while she was on a regular visit to the US to see her family and an ailing brother.

American officials had not confirmed her detention until January 18, when a US federal judge said she is not accused of a crime, but her testimony is required over an unspecified case.

The order said that Hashemi was arrested on “a material arrest warrant” in a case in Washington, without elaborating further on the case.

Hashemi had attended her first court session the same day.

It is unknown why the judge has ordered her arrest and on what alleged evidence.

Iran has asked the US to free the senior journalist immediately.

English-Speaking Police Forces to Serve Tourists in Iran’s Yazd

Seyyed Mostafa Fatemi, the head of the provincial branch of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organisation told ISNA recently that they are searching to find a location for the headquarters of the unit.

“Soon, police forces fluent in foreign languages and familiar with tourism issues will be deployed to historic parts of Yazd,” he added.

Fatemi noted that Yazd has hosted more tourists since its historic parts were registered in UNESCO’s world heritage list.

The official mentioned that Yazd is capable of becoming the country’s top tourist destination.

“Fortunately, in recent years, Yazd has welcomed a big number of tourists, particularly foreign tourists,” he underlined.

The tourism police had been established in Yazd in 2002, but the unit was dismantled after a few months over unknown reasons.

Yazd, known as the “City of Windcatchers”, was inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2017.

Polish Deputy FM in Tehran over Hosting Anti-Iran Conference

The visit comes after the strong criticism voiced by Iranian officials regarding this summit.

The Polish diplomat, who is heading a politico-economic delegation, is to hold talks with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, IRNA reported.

The US State Department announced on January 11 it will host a global conference in Poland on February 13-14 to discuss the Middle East, and Iran in particular.

Poland claims the conference would not target Iran, but Iranian officials believe it is part of the intensifying US pressure campaign against the country.

Southern Iran Major Habitat for Seabirds

These migratory birds come from the countries to the north of Iran and Siberia and go to stay in areas in the south.

Bushehr province boasts intact areas and pristine nature, making it a major habitat for different types of animals, says a top provincial environment protection official. Bushehr is home to different types of habitats for rate species of flora and fauna. The protected areas on Bushehr’s coastline and islands are natural habitats for different types of native and migratory birds and serve as a major hub for the reproduction of seabirds in the Middle East.

There are several species of birds in Bushehr which make the atmosphere all the more pleasant for visitors and locals.

One of the interesting forms of entertainment is feeding seabirds which is one of the favourite pastimes of tourists in winter.

The following are images of seabirds on Bushehr coastline retrieved from IRNA.

‘Israel Collapsing Due to Its Tyranny against Palestinians’

“The Israeli regime is moving in the direction of tyranny and oppression, and will have no fate but annihilation,” Ali-Akbar Salehi said in a Sunday ceremony in Tehran.

The ceremony, called “Gaza, the Symbol of Resistance”, focused on the Israeli atrocities against the Palestinian nation, and the oppressed people’s struggle against the Tel Aviv regime during the past decades.

Salehi also highlighted the efforts made by the Islamic Republic of Iran to contribute to these struggles, saying that the 1979 Revolution of Iran managed to help Palestinian resistance forces get on the right track and even revive Islam for them.

He further noted that “the golden key to the region is in the hands of Iran.”

Salehi, who is also the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said Iran is a developing country and enjoys a lofty status in terms of international relations.

He noted that the AEOI is the symbol of the country’s power and dignity and is in a position where it is engaged in a major challenge with world powers.

“At one side of the table sit the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, and on the other side of the table sits the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said Salehi.

He also said the Iranian nation has a very bright future ahead.
