‘EU Justifications for Delaying SPV Not Acceptable’

Kamal Kharrazi, the Head of Iran’s Strategic Council of Foreign Relations, said the Islamic Republic cannot accept the Europeans’ justification that they remain incapable of supporting their firms to defy the US sanctions and keep their operations in the country.

Speaking in a meeting with a delegation from Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) from Italy on Saturday, Kharrazi underlined that the US President Donald Trump is not after merely exerting pressure on Iran.

“Trump is also after undermining and disintegrating the European Union and the upcoming Iran-focused conference slated for next month in the Polish capital Warsaw is organised to this end,” he was quoted as saying in a report by Fars News Agency.

He then describes the mutual ties between Iran and the EU as significant and said the two sides dialogue on various issues is highly beneficiary for both of them.

The Iranian diplomat then referred to the US violations of its pledges under the Iran nuclear deal and said Trump’s approach towards the international treaty is unacceptable under international laws.

He then referred to the repeated delays of the European Union in the implementation of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) and said this is not acceptable to say that Europeans cannot support their firms against the US sanctions.

“This means that the Europeans’ signatures under the international treaties are of no value anymore and the main question lingering in mind is that why the Europeans entered talks with Iran if they were aware of their zero-influence on their firms.”

He underlined that the Islamic Republic has paid a heavy price for its independence and added Iran will not give in to the pressure and has already adopted appropriate measures to cope with them.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Kharrazi said the US has held hostage the EU and “that’s why, the bloc will face further problems in its relations with the US in future.”

According to Kharrazi, the US is seeking to establish itself as the superpower in the world. “But the Europeans should take lessons from Russia and China and stand against the US pressure.”

For their parts, members of the Italian delegation underlined that the capacities of cooperation between Iran and Europe goes beyond the JCPOA and added Iran rightly expects the European sides to take long strides in providing the Islamic Republic with appropriate grounds to take its legal economic benefits from the nuclear accord.

They added that the US has violated international laws by unilaterally withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and underlined that Europe is heavily dependent on the US.

Iran has warned that it cannot wait forever for the establishment of the SPV.

“We’ve so far witnessed that the European countries have the political will [to maintain business relations with Iran], and have not seen any sign that proves otherwise,” Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said last month.

Iran and the EU have been discussing ways to conduct non-dollar trade in order to offset the US sanctions. On September 24, Iran and the remaining sides of the JCPOA released a joint statement announcing the setting up of the SPV to facilitate continued trade with Iran, bypass the US financial system, and avoid any impact of America’s secondary sanctions.

‘Details of Diplomatic Meeting Between Araqchi, Europeans Released’

In a report published on Saturday, Entekhab news website said the meeting, held in Tehran on January 8, was held at the request of French, British, German, Danish, Dutch, and Belgian diplomats who had refused to disclose the reason for the meeting.

According to Entekhab, the meeting goes awry after one of the European diplomats brought up a written statement to read it.

Araqchi, angry at the European envoys’ criticism of Iran’s missile activities and their terrorism allegations against Tehran, interrupted them and responded furiously.

“I thought you have come here to talk about your laxity regarding the JCPOA and terrorists who you have sheltered in Europe, and make apologies [for them],” the report quoted Araqchi as saying.

“The meeting is finished,” Araqchi said, followed with him walking out and slamming the door.

The report said the European diplomats, surprised by Araqchi’s behavior, asked other Iranian diplomats to receive the statement. But no one took it and they eventually left the Foreign Ministry.

Iran had refused to talk about the stormy meeting up until Saturday.

Last Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi had refused to provide details on the meeting.

Qassemi just said that Iran had announced it reserves the right to reciprocate the arrest of Iranian diplomats over terrorism charges and it will not leave such moves without a response.

 

Contradicting Narratives

The new details came shortly after Reuters published a report on the meeting, claiming the European officials had conveyed the message that Europe could no longer tolerate ballistic missile tests in Iran and “assassination plots” on European soil.

“There was a lot of drama, they didn’t like it, but we felt we had to convey our serious concerns,” one of the diplomats told Reuters.

The report, citing European envoys, said Araqchi’s move was an “extraordinary break with protocol.”

Quoting four EU diplomats, Reuters reported Europe was angry at Iran’s firing of short-range ballistic missiles into Syria on Sept. 30, missile tests, a satellite launch earlier this month and alleged assassination plots in France and Denmark last year.

The same day as the meeting, the Netherlands publicly blamed Iran for terror attacks on its soil in 2015 and 2017.

On Jan. 9, the EU designated a unit of Iran’s intelligence ministry as terrorist organisation, froze its assets and those of two men.

Iran has ruled out involvement in the alleged assassination plans, describing them as plots designed to damage Iran-Europe relations at a time when the US is pressuring Europe to toe its hardened line on Iran.

 

Europe Siding with US?

The new spat came months after the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear accord, which was followed by the return of anti-Iran sanctions suspended under the nuclear accord.

In recent months, the US has been working to hamper Iran’s foreign trade and pushing countries to cut down to zero their purchase of Iranian oil.

Iran has announced its continued fulfilment of nuclear deal obligations hinges on the EU compensating for the US withdrawal.

The EU has sought to show Iran that compliance with the nuclear accord would still mean economic benefits, vowing to create a special mechanism to protect trade with Iran.

However, Iran is lamenting Europeans have failed to bring into operation the mechanism by the end of 2018, the initial deadline.

A day after the January 8 meeting, the European Union imposed its first sanctions on Iran since world powers agreed the 2015 Vienna nuclear arms control deal with Tehran.

Reuters reported Europeans are preparing a set of new sanctions against Tehran, probably including asset freeze and travel banks on Iranian firms contributing to Iran’s missile program.

The agency quoted four European diplomats as saying that getting all 28 EU members to agree will take time.

The spokesman also empathized with the relatives of the victims of this tragedy and wished good health for all of the injured.

Mexican authorities have put the number killed in Friday night’s fuel pipeline blast at 66, with scores more injured.

It is believed the explosion took place after the line was ruptured by suspected fuel thieves in the town of Tlahuelilpan, in Hidalgo state. Officials say scores of people had been scrambling to fill up containers and were engulfed in an inferno.

Ingredient:

1 cup of sugar

3 cups of milk

¼ cup of rosewater

1/3 cup of cream

1 tsp of salep

1 tbsp of cardamom

½ tbsp of brewed saffron

Pistachio; as much as needed

First pour the milk into a container and put it on the heat. Then, add a little sugar (50 g) and wait until it reaches the boiling point. Take another container and mix the remaining sugar with salep. Add the sugar and salep mixture slowly to the milk container. To completely dissolve the salep and sugar in the milk, use a mixer to stir the ingredients. At this point add the rosewater, but before that turn off the flame. Now add saffron. Add the cream and cardamom after the ingredients are cooled down. In order to dissolve the cream in the milk, keep stirring. Take a metal container to pour the mixture into it. Place the container in freezer. To get a nice ice cream repeat the last step 3 times every hour. Perhaps some people tend to use dried cream in their ice cream. In that case, mix 100 grams of cream with 1 tsp of sugar and then pour it into a tray and place it in the fridge to get frozen.

Grave Belonging to Iron Age Warrior Discovered in Northern Iran

Shahram Ramin, who is a member of discovery team, says in the explorations of this site, several graves were discovered with burial gifts. “The works found next to them show that these graves belong to the Iron Age.”

According to Ramin, this site was at risk of destruction due to the implementation of a construction project; therefore, a team of archaeologists began the emergency exploration of the site.

Grave Belonging to Iron Age Warrior Discovered in Northern Iran“The skeleton belongs to a forty-year-old man with a height between 160 and 167 centimetres. Considering the importance of it, the team plans to register the grave and the findings by laser. In addition to the Iron Age graves, a number of tools have been discovered at lower depths, which according to preliminary studies by the experts of the National Museum of Iran, are probably related to the Epipaleolithic period.”

This ancient site was explored for the first time by the Japanese archaeologists for five years between 1973 to 1978 followed by explorations by Mohammad Reza Khalatbari during the years 1986 to 1988.

The result was the acquisition of works from the first millennium to the Sassanid period.

Also, during excavations in 2014 by the archaeologists some graves belonging to the first millennium BC were discovered.

“Why the heck are they awarding symbols of Iranian architecture as their own achievements?” Khabaronline news website wrote.

A windcatcher is the traditional Iranian architecture found throughout the country, particularly in the central parts of Iran.

The tower is a simple yet effective solution for cooling air in warm climates, allowing hot air to rise out the top of it, and cooler directed winds to flow down into the home.

Yazd, a city in central Iran known as the “City of Windcatchers”, was inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2017.

The wind towers were introduced to Arabs in southern Persian Gulf in 1850s, when Iranian traders created structure built of stone or mud to ventilate their mansions.

The Berlin Bride festival has been held annually, but the presence of an Iranian fashion designer at the event over the past two years has come into the spotlight.

Fashion designer Mahboubeh Bolandi, who has managed to create some 200 direct and indirect job opportunities over the past 15 years, has been front-page news with her presence at the festival, reported IRNA.

She says European models put on the clothes of different brands at the festival and hit the catwalk to draw the audience’s attention. During the event, the manager of each brand rents a few models to show off his/her products on the stage.

However, European models showed an interest in wearing Islamic bride’s clothes without eying any financial gain at the 2019 Berlin Bride. Around 15 European models had been lining up to display Islamic bride’s gowns on the stage.

Other Islamic clothes designed by the same Iranian designer and entrepreneur, including mantillas and party dresses, were also warmly welcomed by the models at the event.

According to Bolandi, Iranian brands and Islamic clothes were not allowed to take part at the 2017 event. She says she managed to attend the festival at the 2018 festival, and that she was officially invited by festival managers to attend the event in 2019.

She says she tries to take to international festivals in 2020 a number of her colleagues working in the field of fashion designing.

Enemies’ Plot to Trigger Unrest in Iran Foiled: Police Chief

Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari said opposition groups and the enemies were plotting to disrupt the ceremonies marking the anniversary of the revolution’s victory on February 11, but their conspiracy was thwarted.

He said police and security forces will, like in previous years, ensure security during this year’s rallies which will be marked by a huge turnout of people.

He urged people and officials to remain vigilant and prepared.

He noted that police need to take action carefully, swiftly and prudently.

Placards Against Arrest of Press TV Anchor Projected on BBC Building

An Islamic rights group has protested the arrest of Hashemi, the Press TV’s anchor, on the BBC building in London Friday night.

Hashemi was arrested Sunday at the St. Louis airport on a visit to see an ailing family member, Press TV has announced.

The placard, projected by the Islamic Human Right Commission, a London-based rights group, called for the immediate release of Hashemi.

“Journalist who has been abducted for exposing US crimes against the oppressed”, the placard said, protesting the reported mistreatment of Hashemi at the hands of the US police.

Masoud Shajareh, the chairman of the rights group, told IRNA on Friday the commission has sent a letter to UN human rights rapporteurs, voicing protest against the arbitrary arrest.

Hashemi, born in the US in 1959, converted to Islam and moved to Iran following the 1979 revolution of Iran.

Iran has protested the arrest of Hashemi calling on the US to disclose the basis for her detention.

A US court on Friday confirmed the arrest of Hashemi saying she is not accused of a crime, but her testimony is required over an unspecified case, AFP reported.

The order said that Hashemi was arrested on “a material arrest warrant” in a case in Washington.

She will be released after the completion of her testimony to a jury investigating unspecified “violations of US criminal law,” the statement said.
