Iran Holds Joint Naval Drills with IRGC

The maneuvers took place off the coast of Muscat within the framework of the Omani-Iranian Military Friendship Joint Committee, reported the media center of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Wednesday.

Units from the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force of Oman as well as the Border Guard Brigade along with units from the Navy of Islamic Republic of Iran Army and the Navy of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) took part in the drills.

The drills come as a high-ranking Iranian military delegation, headed by Brigadier General Ghadir Nezami who leads the joint military committee with Oman, is on a visit to Muscat.

Speaking at a meeting in Muscat with 120 representatives from Iran’s business and economic sectors, Iranian Ambassador to Muscat Mohammad Reza Nouri Shahroudi highlighted a growth in ties between the two neighboring nations in the area of defense and trade.

The diplomat announced that two neighbors plan to create a new direct shipping route by the end of this month.

Shahroudi further pointed to a rise in the number of direct flights between the two countries, adding that the enhancement of maritime transportation between Iran and Oman help further strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.

The ambassador added that Iran-Oman trade hit $700 million in an 11-month period during 2018-2019.

Trump’s Veto of Yemen War Bill Shows Israeli Influence in US: Iran

Asked by reporters about the US president’s move to veto the congressional bill, Zarif said in Ankara on Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cohorts have unfortunately gained such level of influence on the US political society that are challenging the US interests, the assets of Americans, and even a congressional decision.

“For the international relations, it is a new clue about the degree of influence of the Zionist lobby and those working with the Zionist lobby on the US internal affairs,” he noted.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump vetoed a bill Congress passed to end the US military assistance in the Saudi Arabia-led military campaign against Yemen.

In a break with the president, Congress had voted for the first time to invoke the War Powers Resolution to try and stop US involvement in a foreign conflict.

The US provides billions of dollars of arms to the Saudi-led coalition attacking Yemeni people.

Since 2015, the US has provided the aerial refueling of jets, reconnaissance, targeting and intelligence information to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in their campaign against Yemen, according to Al Jazeera.

Saudi Arabia and a coalition of Arab governments have launched more than 19,000 air raids across Yemen.

The fighting in the Arab world’s poorest country also has left millions suffering from food and medical care shortages and has pushed the country to the brink of famine.

Air raids by the Saudi-UAE coalition have hit civilians, hospitals and water treatment facilities. Aid groups estimate as many as 60,000 civilians have been killed in the war and as many as 85,000 children starved to death, with millions more “one step away from famine”.

Iraq Seriously Trying to Mediate between Iran, Saudi: MP

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman meet on April 18, 2019

Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh says the Iraqi officials are doing their best to reduce tensions between Tehran and Riyadh.

In an interview with Tasnim News Agency, he maintained that some of the regions in the Muslim world are prone to crisis and one of these regions is Iraq.

“The Iraqi government knows that if tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia are not resolved in the near future, a crisis may spill over to this country.

He further emphasized that Iraq is in its transition period and knows how important security is to the country. “That’s why the resolving of tensions between Iran and the Arab states has turned into a strategy in Iraq today,” stated Falahatpisheh.

Calling on Iran’s foreign ministry to make the most of this opportunity, the top lawmaker noted that some signs of the willingness to decrease tension with Iran could be seen in Saudi Arabia, and Iran’s foreign ministry must now play an active role.

His comments came after Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi visited Saudi Arabia and its crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, following a visit to Tehran.

Many believe the consecutive visits are aimed at mediating between Iran and Saudi Arabia, the two arch-rivals.

Iran, Turkey to Establish INSTEX-Like Mechanism: Zarif

Iran and Turkey flags

The mechanism will cover five areas covering preferential trade, energy, banking ties and use of each other’s currencies to facilitate mutual ties, Zarif said on Thursday speaking to reporters following his one-day visit to Turkey.

He referred to the growing mutual ties between Iran and Turkey and said the Islamic Republic of Iran appreciates Turkish officials’ stance to slam the US’ unilateral sanctions on Iran as well as the latest decision by Trump to blacklist Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corpse as a terrorist organization, a report by Fars news agency said.

Zarif said during his visit to Turkey he held talks with Turkish officials on ways to continue their trade ties despite the US pressure.

“We agreed to specifically expand our ties in at least five areas including preferential trade, energy, banking and use of joint currency. To this end, the Turkish foreign minister and I are expected to follow up on the agreements made during the visit,” he said.

According to Zarif, special joint commissions are assigned to pave the way for implementing the agreements.

Turkish officials have shown that they are interested in expanding their ties with Iran in various economic, security, political, regional and international issues, he added.

He further noted that Iran and Turkey have established unprecedented cooperation on border issues.

“We are happy to establish similar ties with our neighbours like Azerbaijan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and those in Central Asia,” he said.

Zarif also referred to his visit to Damascus earlier this week and said he discussed the latest developments in Syria with Turkish officials while in Ankara.

US Meddling in Venezuela, North Africa

The Iranian foreign minister then referred to his discussions with Turkish officials on the developments in Venezuela and North Africa.

“I also exchanged views with Turkish officials on Venezuela developments and the US illegal meddling in the Latin country. We also discussed the US’ worrisome decision to use force in North Africa,” he said.

Letters to Foreign Counterparts

On his recent letter to his foreign counterpart on the repercussions of the US decision to blacklist the IRGC as a terrorist organization, Zarif said immediately after the US announced its decision, he wrote a letter to the UN on the dangers of the decision.

“Then after the US officially blacklisted the IRGC on April 15, I wrote a letter to my foreign counterparts and outlined the dangerous repercussions of the move.”

In the letter, Zarif warned against the political and legal fallouts of the US unilateral move which violates all international law.

Israel’s Growing Influence in US Politics

He then referred to the growing influence of the Israeli prime minster in the US politics and said “unfortunately, Benjamin Netanyahu’s influence in the US politics has increased so much that today, we see Israel impacts not only the US interests but also its politics. This shows how deep Israel has penetrated into the US politics.”

Zarif made a one day visit to Turkey for talks with the country’s officials on mutual and regional issues. Earlier he paid a visit to Syria on Monday for talks on regional issues.

Region’s Fate Unclear Had Iran Not Fought ISIS: Leader

During a meeting with military commanders in the capital Tehran on Wednesday ahead of National Army Day, Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to the presence of the Iranian Army and the Armed Forces in the region and their contribution to the fight against “enemies’ seditious acts” and said, “If the Army and the IRGC did not engage in the fight against ISIS, today what had become of the region and neighboring countries and who would rule over them?”

“Each and every single country that was engaged [in the fight] countered [terrorists] and took necessary measures but the role of Iran’s Armed Forces cannot be ignored,” the Leader added.

The Leader said Iran’s Armed Forces were among the “manifestations and elements of national power,” contrary to many countries even those claiming to be advocates of freedom and human rights, where the military is the element of power that counters people, an example of which we see in the Saturday [protests in] Paris.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said the Armed Forces both in Islam and in the Islamic Republic of Iran are considered a “safe protection for nations,” noting that’s why enemies are seeking to disrupt peace of the nation through portraying the Armed Forces agitated.

The Leader said the US made baseless remarks about Iran to undermine the morale of the nation.

“The United States is struggling with thousands of billions of debt and various problems, and despite some years after floods and storms in areas such as Carolina they have not yet been able to deal with these problems, but they are ranting and raving to weaken the morale of the Iranian nation.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei commended the army and the IRGC as well as the unprecedented presence of people in flood-hit areas to help their fellow country men and women.

The Leader also underlined the importance of “ever-growing unity” among Iran’s Armed Forces, He also hailed the unity between the Armed Forces and the IRGC in the face of a recent move by the US to blacklist the IRGC.

“Whatever measure that enrages enemy is good and right but all should refrain from any act that emboldens and bolsters enemy,” Ayatollah Khamenei further said.

The United States on Monday officially registered the IRGC as a “foreign terrorist organization,” according to a notice published on the website of the US Federal Register.

US President Trump said in a statement on April 8 that he had designated the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization, adding that the Iranian elite forces’ designation “makes crystal clear the risks of conducting business with, or providing support to, the IRGC. If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism.”

The US measure was met with severe criticism from Iranian officials and military commanders as well as the nation that voiced support for the IRGC.

On Tuesday, the Iranian parliament overwhelmingly approved the general outlines of a motion devised by the legislature to counter the US blacklisting of the IRGC.

Shortly after Trump’s statement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also slammed the US government as “supporter of terrorism,” designating American forces in West Asia, known as the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), as a “terrorist organization.”

US Blacklisting of IRGC Insult to Iranian Nation: Rouhani

The Iranian president made the remarks in an address to a Thursday ceremony marking the National Army Day in Tehran.

The United States last week officially registered the IRGC as a “foreign terrorist organization,” according to a notice published on the website of the US Federal Register.

US President Trump said in a statement on April 8 that he had designated the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization, adding that the move “makes crystal clear the risks of conducting business with, or providing support to, the IRGC. If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism.”

Shortly after Trump’s statement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also slammed the US government as “supporter of terrorism,” designating American forces in West Asia, known as the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), as a “terrorist organization.”

In his Thursday remarks, Rouhani further said the Armed Forces of Iran are not against regional countries and their national interests. He said they stand against invaders, but the root cause of problems are the Zionist regime and American imperialism.

President Rouhani called on countries in the Middle East to push back Zionism.

“The regional nations have lived next to each other for centuries and never had a problem. If there is a problem, it is caused by other countries.”

Further, the Iranian president called on Muslim nations to be united to protect the right of the nation of Palestine stressing that Zionism has been committing crimes in the region in the past 70 years.

“The final victory will certainly be with the righteous,” he underlined.

Iran’s annual Army Day celebrations are a chance for the Iranian military to put on show its latest weaponry.
