A Look at Iranian Newspaper Front Pages on November 19

The majority of newspapers today covered Israel’s indiscriminate war on Gaza in which over 25 people, including a 14-month-old kid and two pregnant women, lost their lives. Iran had called on the United Nations to take action as soon as possible.

The papers also covered the tension between Iran and the US and the push by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton to wage a war on the Islamic Republic. They say this team is doing its best to force Iran to leave the nuclear deal to pave the ground for an attack on the country.

Iran’s oil sale and possible measures in face of US bullying as well as the resistance movement’s firing of about 600 rockets on Israel were among the other topics highlighted by Iranian dailies today.

The above issues, as well as many more, are highlighted in the following headlines and top stories:

‘Iran Will Soon Announce Measures against US JCPOA Pullout’

Hassan Rouhani - President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

The remarks were made by an official close to an Iranian committee tasked with monitoring the implementation of the Iran nuclear deal.

Rouhani’s live interview will be broadcast on Wednesday, May 8, the anniversary of the day when US President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the nuclear deal with Iran.

Reports say the envisaged plans are within the framework of sections 26 and 36 of the JCPOA.

At present, the issue of leaving the deal is not on the agenda.

However, a partial and total reduction of some of Iran’s commitments and the beginning of some of the nuclear activities that had been stopped under the JCPOA will probably be the first steps by Iran to respond to the withdrawal of US as well as the failure of European countries to fulfil their obligations.

The EU officials, who have failed to fulfil their promises over the past year, have been unofficially informed about this decision, the source said.

Iran, Niger Discuss Promotion of Ties in Tehran

During the Monday meeting in Tehran, FM Zarif pointed to the important position of relations with African countries in Iran’s foreign policy, and highlighted the good and friendly relations of the Islamic Republic with Niger.

“There are many areas for expansion of relations and cooperation between the two countries, and it is imperative that the governments and parliaments of the two countries make more efforts in this regard,” he said.

“There is also good ground for cooperation between the private sectors of the two countries, and they can play an important role in expanding ties,” FM Zarif said.

The Vice-President of Niger’s National Assembly, in turn, gave a report on his trip to Iran and expressed sympathy with the government, parliament and people of Niger on the recent flood in Iran and the damages caused by it.

He also described Iranians as energetic, warm and hospitable people, and expressed his satisfaction over the fact that the two countries’ parliamentary friendship group has been able to take steps to develop ties with the Islamic Republic in the field of telecommunications, as well as academic, political and parliamentary  relations between Tehran and Niamey.

Palestine, Israel Reach Ceasefire Agreement

That was announced both by two Palestinian officials familiar with the agreement and the Hamas Resistance Movement’s media outlet.

“The ceasefire understanding will begin Monday 04:30 (01:30 GMT),” one of the officials told Reuters.

Earlier, Gaza’s Health Ministry said at least 25 people have been killed and 154 others injured in the fresh flare-up of violence in the enclave.

Two pregnant women and a 14-month-old baby were among the fatalities.

The upsurge in violence came after the Israeli prime minister ordered the military to continue massive strikes on the enclave. Benjamin Netanyahu also said Israeli forces around Gaza would be reinforced.

Tensions erupted on Friday following the killing of four Palestinians, two in an Israeli air raid on southern Gaza and two during the regime’s live fire at anti-occupation protesters near a fence separating the blockaded coastal enclave from the occupied territories.

The Israeli military claimed that its initial aerial assault had come in response to the wounding of two of its soldiers by Palestinian gunfire near the Gaza fence.

The latest rocket fire from Gaza killed a 60-year-old Israeli man. A total of some 83 Israelis have also been wounded.

The Tel Aviv regime says about 600 rockets have been fired at the occupied lands over the past few days. The Israeli army says its warplanes have targeted some 180 sites in the Gaza Strip.

‘US to Issue Conditional Waivers for Iraq to Maintain Business with Iran’

Hamid Baeidinejad announced in a Twitter post that some Iraqi political sources have said the US government will grant Iraq exemptions for the economic cooperation with Iran.

“US to extend Iraq’s waiver to continue dealing with Iran economically despite US sanctions if Iraq signs a deal before 14 June with Exxon Mobil,” Baeidinejad retweeted a post by son of MP Masha’an al-Jebouri.

The United States has tightened energy sanctions against Iran, claiming to cut the Islamic Republic’s exports to zero and ushering in a new era of uncertainty for the oil market.

President Donald Trump restored sanctions against Iran last year but granted waivers to eight nations, allowing them to import limited quantities of Iranian crude.

Then, his administration surprised the market by announcing it would not extend the waivers.

US Sending Aircraft Carrier, Bomber to Mideast in ‘Message to Iran’

In a Sunday statement, John Bolton said the US is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the US Central Command region.

According to the hawkish official, the move is aimed at sending a “clear and unmistakable message” to Iran that “any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force.”

The decision has been made “in response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings,” he added.

He noted that Washington “is not seeking war” with Iran, but it is “fully prepared to respond to any attack”, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) or regular Iranian forces.

He did not provide further details, but a US official said the forces “have been ordered to the region as a deterrence to what has been seen as potential preparations by Iranian forces and its proxies that may indicate possible attacks on US forces in the region.”

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the United States was not expecting any imminent attack on US forces, Reuters reported.

The move by the US comes as it had earlier vowed to cut Iran’s oil exports down to zero, prompting Tehran to warn that it will not allow any other country to export oil through the Strait of Hormuz if Tehran cannot sell its crude.

Iran Strongly Condemns Israeli Attacks on Gaza Civilians

In a Sunday statement, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said in light of the US’ unlimited support for the Israeli regime and the shameful silence of some Muslim governments, there is no end in sight to the Zionists’ crimes in the occupied territories of Palestine.

Praising the legitimate struggles and the forbearing resistance of the oppressed people of Palestine against the occupying regime, Mousavi highlighted the legitimate right of the Palestinians to defend themselves against the crimes of the Zionist regime.

He also called for urgent action by regional and international organisations and associations to prevent the continuation of the regime’s aggression against the innocent and defenceless people of Palestine.

Israel is indiscriminately targeting residential areas in the Gaza Strip and the civilian death toll from air raids on the besieged territory has increased to 21.

Israeli fighter jets pounded Gaza after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to continue massive strikes in the enclave. Gaza’s Health Ministry says a number of Palestinians have been killed in the latest Israeli air strikes on Saturday.

A pregnant woman and a 14-month-old baby are among the victims. Dozens of Palestinians have also been wounded. Palestinians have fired hundreds of retaliatory rockets, striking some areas in southern Israel.

Iran’s Annual Tourism Revenues Hit $11.8bn: Official

‘Iran Great Travel Destination for Globetrotters during Pandemic’

Speaking in a Saturday ceremony, Mounesan referred to tourism industry as the third largest industry in the world and said tourism creates social vitality along with new jobs and benefits.

He downplayed the impact of sanctions on Iran’s tourism industry and said due to its immunity to sanctions, the industry can play an important role in the country’s economic growth.

A new report on global security portrayed Iran as safe as much of western Europe for travellers in what could be an evidence that the country’s tourism industry has a good potential to provide a serious source of revenues in face of draconian US sanctions.

The 2019 Travel Risk Map prepared, launched by global risk experts International SOS in collaboration with Control Risks, shows the danger level in each country and territory based on the current threat posed to travelers by political violence (including terrorism, insurgency, politically motivated unrest and war), social unrest (including sectarian, communal and ethnic violence) and violent and petty crime.

Factors such as the robustness of the transport infrastructure, the state of industrial relations, the effectiveness of the security and emergency services and the country’s susceptibility to natural disasters are also taken into consideration, according to a report by The Independent.

The map lists five categories of risk: insignificant, low, medium, high and extreme.

Iran is among the world’s top potential tourist destinations with a variety of ancient sites, including 17 places listed by the UNESCO.

Iranian officials have said they wanted to annually attract 20 million tourists by 2025 in order to generate $30 billion of revenues as the country seeks to wean itself off the oil money.

Official figures earlier released showed that over six million tourists had traveled to Iran over a period of six months starting March 2018. This was higher than the same period last year by above 50 percent.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) recently said tourism contributed a total of $30.7 billion to Iran’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2017. The WTTC added that Iran’s global ranking in terms of contribution of tourism revenues to the economy stood at 35 out of 185 countries.

Apart from Iran, the only other countries in the region with the least security risks have been identified as Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Other “low risk” regional countries are Jordan, Oman, Qatar, the UAE, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Uzbekistan

The security for travelers in Turkmenistan and Saudi Arabia has been described as “average”. However, other countries in the region including Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan have been described as “dangerous”.

“Extreme” risk countries are almost exclusively in Africa and the Middle East, including Syria, Yemen, Libya, South Sudan and Somalia.

Very few countries manage to make it into the “insignificant” bracket; in Europe, only Luxembourg, Denmark, Slovenia, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Greenland are put in this category, The Independent added in its report. Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand are all low risk too.

Brazil Says Ready to Help Iran in Face of US Sanctions

Rodrigo Di Assardo Santos made the remarks on Sunday in a meeting with the governor of Kermanshah Province.

Santos said a number of Brazilian banks interact with Iranian banks and “we can work together in the economic and capital transfer sectors.”

“We do not have any problems with the transfer of funds from the banks of Brazil to Iran, but if we are faced with the problem of transferring the currency and capital of Brazilian companies to Iran, we can do this through barter.”

Referring to his meeting with Iranian Minister of Health, he said, “We had good negotiations to export hospital and sanitation equipment to Iran.”

The diplomat said he had travelled to the Islamic Republic four times before being appointed as the ambassador, noting that during these trips he had found Iranians are resilient people and could solve problems.

He went on to say that after meetings with the ministers and governors of the Islamic Republic of Iran, “I realized that Iran is a large country in the region, and it is becoming a big power in the world with such speedy progress.”

Santos also welcomed Brazil’s cooperation with Kermanshah province in the field of petrochemicals, water, agriculture and natural minerals, and promised to prepare the ground for Brazilian traders’ transactions with Iranian province of Kermanshah.

Trade volume between Brazil and Iran was about $2.5 billion last year, of which most were goods imported by Iran.

Corn, meat and soybeans are Iran’s most important imports from Brazil, and floorboards, grapes, pistachios, raisins and glassware are the most important export items of the Islamic Republic to Brazil.
