Iran Condemns ISIS Attack on Iraq’s PMU Forces

US Will Fail to Extend Iran’s Arms Embargo: Spokesman

In a statement on Sunday, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyyed Abbas Mousavi offered condolences and expressed sympathy with the Iraqi government and proud nation over the martyrdom of the PMU forces.

He also expressed hope that the Iraqi government and nation’s rapport and diligence would help great Iraq immediately get rid of the few weakened remnants of the evil ISIS terrorist group, which has been created and is being supported under the auspices of certain governments.

“History has shown that the pure blood of combatants in the path of God will never be wasted, and the revenge will be taken for such pure blood, which has contributed to the growth of Islam, justice and truth,” he added.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the Iraqi efforts to fight against terrorism and establish peace and stability in that country, and rejects and condemns any measure aimed at upsetting stability and calm in Iraq,” the spokesperson underlined.

At least ten members of Iraqi PMU forces were killed in an attack carried out by the ISIS terror group in the Arab country’s Salahuddin province on Saturday.

ISIS has intensified its attacks in Iraq amid Baghdad’s call on the US to pull out its forces from the Arab country.

Iran Calls Off Nationwide Anti-Israel ‘Quds Day’ Rallies over Pandemic

Iran Calls Off Anti-Israel Quds Day Rallies over Pandemic

Deputy Head of the Coordinating Council for Islamic Development said on Sunday “Certainly, this year we will not … hold Quds Day rallies nationwide due to the outbreak of the virus.”

Nosratollah Lotfi added that there will be a march as in previous years, but only in low-risk cities. In these counties, the march will be the same as in previous years, but after Friday prayers.

He further mentioned various plans have been proposed on how to hold the ceremonies this year.

“In cities such as Tehran and provincial capitals, there is a plan for a car march where motorcyclists will fly a flag and people will follow them. Another plan is to determine specific routes with social distance, and each direction would be taken over by one organisation.”

Meanwhile, Ramazan Sharif, Head of the Intifada and Holy Quds Central Office in Iran, said in a press conference that it is predicted the enemy would launch a media hype on the occasion of Int’l Quds Day, and it is already clear what their scenario is.

“Tehran is the main city, and if rallies are not supposed to be held in Tehran we should announce it clearly and focus on the media and getting messages from resistance figures,” Sharif said.

“As far as we know, the leader of Islamic Revolution will have a speech about Quds, and it would be a good thing if we could have Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh or one of the resistance figures as a guest,” continued Sharif.

The Quds Day, officially known as International Quds Day, is an annual event that has been held on the last Friday of Ramadan upon the initiative of the Islamic Republic of Iran since 1979 to express support for the Palestinians and oppose Zionism and Israel.

Quds Day is also held in many other countries, mainly in the Arab and Muslim world, with protests against Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem al-Quds. Rallies are held in various cities by both Muslim and non-Muslim communities around the world.

Iran to Reopen Mosques in 132 ‘White’ Counties: Rouhani

Iran to Reopen Mosques in 132 'White' Counties: Rouhani

The president noted Sunday that mosques will reopen in low-risk or “white” towns and cities as of tomorrow, but schools will remain closed until late May at least.

“The number of businesses being reopened is increasing. Today, we decided to reopen mosques and Friday Prayers congregations as of tomorrow in 132 towns and cities which are regarded as ‘white’ areas, or ‘low-risk’ areas as some put it,” he said.

However, he added, health protocols should be observed all along.

“This is while they abide by health protocols. I believe there are two beautiful things with regards to mosques where [health] protocols are observed: the spiritual beauty, and the beauty of discipline and order and the enforcement of regulations,” he said.

“Let me put it this way. Two acts are being done at mosques: an obligatory act and a religiously rewarding act. When worshippers maintain their distances, they are doing an obligatory action.

“When they are saying their prayers at the mosque, they are doing a religiously rewarding action. In terms of priority, maintaining one’s social distance is more important than attending mass prayers at the mosque, which is a religiously rewarding act,” the president noted.

“So, when we see this compulsory duty and religiously rewarding act side by side, they become all the more beautiful when done together,” he said.

Be Prepared for Possible Peak in COVID-19 Pandemic

Iran’s president has urged the nation to be prepared in case the coronavirus outbreak might reach a peak in the future.

President Rouhani noted that enough medical equipment as well as basic commodities needed by people should be available, so that the general public will have no concerns in that regard.

He at the same time noted that enough equipment have been produced to meet domestic need for items needed to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the president said figures show 83% percent of people, on average, have abided by health protocols, which shows people’s respect for health directives.

The president also touched upon screening tests conducted nationwide to detect people infected with coronavirus.

“In the first phase, 78 million people were screened,” he said.
The president underlined some 30 million people are also scheduled to be screened in the second phase, which, as he added, is more accurate.

Extension of UN Arms Embargo to Sound Death Knell for JCPOA: Iran

Extension of UN Arms Embargo to Sound Death Knell for JCPOA: Iran

Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Vice Admiral Ali Shamkhani said in a tweet that Washington’s attempt to circumvent UN Security Council Resolution 2231 will deal the coup de grace to the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“This virus of sanctions is a tool used by the White House to maintain the United States’ declining hegemony,” he added.

The top official also lashed out at the European signatories to the JCPOA for failing to act decicisvely.

“On which side is Europe standing: Saving face and boosting multilateralism, or accepting humiliation again and contributing to unilateralism?” he asked rhetorically.

His comments came after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed a few days ago to use all means available to extend a UN arms embargo on Iran.

A ban on selling conventional weapons to Iran ends in October under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that endorsed the JCPOA.

“We’re not going to let that happen,” Pompeo told a news conference.

He said he would ask the UN Security Council to prolong the ban, and that the United States will seek action from Britain, France and Germany — which remain part of the nuclear accord.

However, China and Russia are certain to oppose an extension. They only agreed to the five-year ban in 2015 as a compromise reached with the Obama administration.

Meanwhile, Pompeo referred to the US as a participant in the JCPOA during his comments.
Iran reacted the claim, saying US President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, and, hence, Washington was no longer a part of the deal.

Iran Rejects US ‘Selective’ Approach to Nuclear Deal

Iran Rejects US 'Selective' Approach to Nuclear Deal

Iran’s Ambassador to France Bahram Qassemi also berated Washington for breaching UN resolutions.

“By withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the United States both violated its JCPOA obligations and the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and moved toward undermining the UN and even other partners to the Iran nuclear deal,” he said.

“It is not acceptable for a country to both breach its commitments and seek fabricated and selective interests in a deal by withdrawing from it,” he said.

“Playing a roguish and double-standard game with the JCPOA using UN resolutions as a tool to ratchet up the pressure and restrictions and violate the natural rights of Iran and any other independent country is not justifiable by any logic and criterion,” he said.

“Even the international community is against this interpretation and logic which defies globally recognized norms,” he said.

Qassemi’s comments came after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said recently that Washington would not allow Iran to purchase weapons after a UN arms embargo on the country expires in October 2020.

Pompeo also said the US is still a participant in the JCPOA, a claim rejected by Iran.
Tehran said the US unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, so it is no longer considered a party to the nuclear deal.

Iran to Publicly Sell Shares of Four State-Owned Oil Refineries

Iran to Publicly Sell Shares of Four State-Owned Oil Refineries

Ali Rabii said public offerings of shares of oil refineries in Isfahan, Tehran, Tabriz and Bandar Abbas will start on June.

He noted among the key measures adopted by the government to spur economic growth is to offer state-held shares and stocks.

This initiative, he added, will trigger re-investment in the economy and industry, which is the key contributor to the boosting of production, stimulation of employment and new investments.

“The government is pursuing the strategy of offering shares and handing over state-run companies as another step towards downsizing the government and expanding the public sector and private industrial sectors in the country,” he added.

Tehran Stock Exchange Index Hits Record High of 900,000 Points

Tehran Stock Exchange Index Hits Record High of 900,000 Points

The index gained an unprecedented 38,481 points to stand at 916,583 units on Saturday and the market value on the Tehran Stock Exchange reached more than 34,390 trillion rials (about $7.5 billion).

According to experts, the main reason for the unprecedented increase in the stock market index and its record-breaking is the influx of stray liquidity into the stock market and the pressure to buy stocks of limited companies on the stock exchange and over-the-counter.

Also trading permission granted for “Justice Shares” held by low-income Iranian families and the initial offering of major state-owned companies as well as the four-time return of the stock market index over the past year have led people to invest in this market.

Some economists warn that people should avoid emotional behaviour in the stock market and be careful, as risk is a natural part of the stock market.

On the other hand, the recession in parallel markets such as real estate, gold, foreign currency and cars has led people to invest in the stock market. Therefore, the managers of listed and over-the-counter companies should seize the opportunity to issue securities to implement development projects and new investment projects.

Domestic Violence in Iran Less Than That in Other Countries: VP

Domestic Violence in Iran Less Than That in Other Countries: VP

Vice President for Women and Family Affairs Masoumeh Embtekar has, in an interview with Khabar Online, weighed in on how serious domestic violence against women in the country is amid the coronavirus outbreak and ensuing restrictions which have forced many to stay at home. Highlights of the interview follow.

Ms. Ebtekar, there was much word about a rise in domestic violence after the coronavirus outbreak, violence against women and children. In your opinion, what measures should be adopted to reduce or control that violence during this period?

The first point which I think is very important is that we do have domestic and family violence in Iran; but figures and indices show that our situation is not very bad comparted to global statistics; our situation is even better that the global average in terms of the prevalence of domestic violence. Of course, to what extent domestic violence is reported is another issue which needs to be discussed.

The second point is that the Social Emergency Organization and the Center for Intervention in Families’ Social Crises was establish have been established nationwide over the past twenty years, which was a good development. At the moment, all towns with a population of over 50,000 have a centre for social emergency and intervention in crises. There is also a phone line through which people can receive counselling.

How does the Office of Vice President for Women [and Family Affairs] work with, and support this emergency centre?

Since the beginning of the tenure of the 12th administration, we have backed the policy of supporting social emergency adopted by the Office of Vice President for Women [and Family Affairs] because it has worked well and has been an effective method of intervention in family problems. So, we took into consideration the issue of domestic violence as well as ways of interfering in it.

We conducted surveys and received reports whereby we found out that the public had not been informed well enough about the social emergency services. So, we tried to introduce these cerntres to people better.

After the coronavirus outbreak, we received reports from other countries suggesting a percentage of people were suffering from such problems and violence, which, of course, is natural. The reason is that people have restrictions and can’t leave home, so they spend a lot of time together. Moreover, economic pressure may have increased on families. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a lot of mental pressure, especially in the first two or three weeks. Meanwhile, some individuals lost their jobs, especially those who were bread-winners, which contributed to domestic violence.

Ms. Ebtekar, did you adopt any measure to prepare reports on the extent to which domestic violence against women had risen after the coronavirus outbreak?

In addition to the reports coming in from abroad, we received some reports from inside the country as well about this issue. Under those circumstances, our only concern was to take care of families more.

So, we held some meetings to discuss the issue, and finally we had a meeting with the Rehabilitation Organization and the Social Emergency Centre, which was very promising. Finally, it was decided to send text messages to people to introduce social emergency services in a bid to further strengthen the foundation of family and consolidate relations among family members. Fortunately, people saw that SMS, and it seems the move was welcome.

These text messages have three uses. Firs, if somebody is subject to harm, be it a child, an elderly or a spouse, they can get help through this. Second, a person may know of a domestic violence case; for instance, he or she may know that somebody in the neighbourhood is subjected to unusual harm, and that this is repeated over and over again. He or she can report the case. The third point is this: a person who violates people’s human, individual and religious rights and who shows violence and, for example, harasses a child or spouse, when that person sees that everybody is receiving the text message so easily and that they can seek help through it so easily, and that police may go to that person’s home accordingly, that person will rethink his actions. This deterrent aspect is very important to us.

You said that domestic violence in our country is less than the global average. Do you think that’s the case after the coronavirus outbreak, too? I mean do you believe there has been no rise and figures are the same as before?

At the moment, we do not have precise statistics to which we can scientifically refer and about which we can speak with certainty. However, it is important to us that the need has been felt to take care of this, and that measure shave been adopted to inform the public.

Will just one phone number suffice to report cases of domestic violence? As you know, social emergency agents have no right to enter houses.

They can immediately get warrants to get into homes. What they do is to verify reports to see what problem the person has. First, they try to solve the problem with counselling and giving guidance. Then, if they realize that the case is an emergency one and somebody’s life may be at risk or the condition may be such that it is not tolerable for the person, then they act accordingly such as calling in the prosecutor or police or talking to the person who has been harmed.

A bill has been proposed on supporting children and the youth. The bill mentions the issue of social emergency. It even refers to national labour division to counter violence against children, a large number of whom are girls. We asked Parliament to give priority to this issue.

Finally, inside families, we need a series of skills and some information to maintain respect for, and the rights of family members to strengthen human and emotional relations, so that family members of different age groups and generations can live together in peace and harmony.
