Iran Pushing on with Economic Plans Despite Coronavirus: Rouhani

Addressing a ceremony held in Tehran on Thursday to inaugurate several national projects carried out by the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, President Rouhani said economic activities are currently underway across the country despite the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The strict restrictions placed on businesses in February and March have been lifted, the president noted, but emphasized that all economic activities must fully comply with the health regulations to prevent any problem.

President Rouhani also noted that inauguration of new road and housing projects in a very tough year when Iran is struggling with severe sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic at the same time has given the world the message that “the Iranian nation’s move towards honor and excellence does not stall and Iran keeps to the path to development.”

The president further highlighted the significant role of transportation industry in dealing with the coronavirus-related problems, saying the administration gives priority to the health and the livelihood of people.

“Transportation accounts for a large share of the currency revenues, the exports and the production,” President Rouhani added, saying the process of exports and imports relies on the land, railway, maritime, and aerial transportation.

Pointing to the pressure that the coronavirus outbreak has put on the transportation and tourism industries in Iran, the president said the transportation has begun to revive since May.

“Thank God, we are witnessing very good movements in the maritime routes and the ports, particularly in Chabahar, as well as in the railroad and land transportation,” President Rouhani added.

Iranian Navy Fires New Long-Range Cruise Missiles in Combat Drill

Iranian Navy Fires New Long-Range Cruise Missiles in Combat Drill

Iran’s Navy launched a naval combat war game in the Sea of Oman and the northern parts of the Indian Ocean on Thursday morning.

In the exercise, codenamed ‘Ramadan Martyrs’, the Navy tested new short-range and long-range cruise missiles manufactured by the Iranian Defense Ministry.

The long-range naval cruise missiles hit the targets at a distance of 280 kilometers. The range of the new homegrown missiles may be extended.

A variety of coast-to-sea and sea-to-sea missiles with short and long ranges were fired simultaneously from the coastal launchers and the deck of naval vessels, and they could successfully detonate the targets with great accuracy.

The Thursday war game was held on the fortieth day after the martyrdom of a number of Navy forces in an incident involving the Konarak vessel.

Nineteen Navy servicemen were martyred and 15 others injured in the accident on May 10 when a number of vessels were carrying a naval training exercise off the coasts of Jask and Chabahar in the Sea of Oman.

Iranian Spokesman Supports UN Human Rights Council Meeting on Racism in US

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi on Wednesday issued a statement on the emergency meeting of the UN Human Rights Council on June 17-18, held to address the murder of George Floyd and the issue of combatting racism in the United States.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the idea of holding the meeting and the resolution passed by the Human Rights Council in Geneva, and believes that the capacity, resources and energy of the United Nations-associated human rights mechanisms must be geared to approaches such as countering phenomena like racism,” he added.

“According to its religious, cultural and national teachings, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been always a pioneer of confronting and fighting against racism, and believes that systematic racism in certain parts of the world, particularly the US, should be tackled at its roots,” the spokesman noted.

“The people of Palestine have been also victims of prejudice and racism over the past couple of decades, and what we are witnessing in the US society today is the result and upshot of the systematic racism and injustice that have existed and continues to exist in the pillars and structures of the US’s political establishment,” he stated.

“As announced earlier, this is not only the American people and society that have been and are victims of racism and injustice from their ruling governments, but the nations in other countries have also had very bitter experiences of the US administrations’ discriminatory attitudes and approaches coupled with oppression and injustice, and have seen many of their rights violated because of prejudice and injustice, as the responsibility for it lies directly with the US administration,” Mousavi added.

He further highlighted the capabilities and potential of the United Nations organs for the principled and fundamental addressing of issues such as combatting racism, and noted, “At the same time, concerns must be taken into account about a possibility that such efforts might be diverted to the paths that are far from their primary objectives.”

“Racism is one of the very old subjects and agendas at the United Nations, but, in spite of the efforts and measures for several decades, we witnessed such atrocities and brutalities in the US today on the eve of the 20th anniversary of adoption of the Durban Declaration and on Africa Day. This demonstrates that combatting racism must enter a new era, so that we’d ultimately see a day when people are not victimized by racism anywhere in the world,” he added.

Iran Condemns US Sanctions on Syria

Iran Urges GCC Chief to Stop Blame Game, Focus on Ending Yemen War

In a statement on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi condemned the imposition of new US sanctions under the so-called Caesar Act against Syria as a violation of the international law and humanitarian principles.

“While the world is gripped by the coronavirus pandemic, the imposition of such inhumane sanctions will only add to the sufferings and pains of Syrian people,” he noted.

“As already announced, the Islamic Republic of Iran does not give any credence to such cruel and unilateral sanctions that are passed and imposed on the basis of bullying, and deems them to be economic terrorism against the ordinary people of Syria and a continuation of the US attempts to destabilize that country (Syria),” Mousavi added.

“We will continue economic cooperation with the resisting nation and government of Syria like the past, and will strengthen our economic relations with Syria in spite of the sanctions,” he stated.

On Wednesday, the US State Department and the Treasury said 39 Syrian individuals, including President Bashar al-Assad and his wife, had been designated for a load of new economic and travel sanctions.

The sanctions are the result of legislation known as the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act.

‘Knowledge-Based Firms Make Iran Exporter of Coronavirus-Related Items’

Addressing a Tuesday meeting of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, President Rouhani expressed gratitude to the local scientific centers, universities, and knowledge-based enterprises for developing innovative ideas that have prevented a halt to domestic production amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.

“Under such difficult conditions, the new ideas of the knowledge-based centers turned Iran into a powerful exporter of certain new products,” the president added.

He also paid tribute to all Iranian individuals in the health, medical, security, and economic sectors for assisting people and the country in the battle with coronavirus.

President Rouhani also praised Iranians for their stellar efforts, resistance and fortitude in dealing with the foreign sanctions and pressures, saying the country has continued to make progress despite a cut in revenues caused by the sanctions and the coronavirus outbreak.

While the entire world is facing tough conditions and the statistics show that economies have shrunk after the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, Iran has managed to revive non-oil exports in many sectors, has gradually reopened border-crossings, and continues to improve the situation step by step, the president noted.
