No Prospect for US Success in Reinstating Iran Sanctions: Vaezi

No Prospect for US Success in Reinstating Iran Sanctions 22

Mahmoud Vaezi, the chief of staff of the Iranian president, said an overwhelming majority of UN Security Council members have opposed Washington’s demand.

“I don’t see any prospects for success for the US,” he said

“The United States’ alleged ‘snapback’ mechanism needs to go through a month-long process, but so far, 13 of 15 UN Security Council members have opposed the US demand. It means if the Council goes through the process properly, it is a foregone conclusion that this event will amount to a defeat for the US worse than before,” Vaezi added.

“However, the US has resorted to threatening countries today,” he noted.
He said it has been unprecedented to see the US threatening the UN Security Council with sanctions or tough action if the world body did not meet the US demand.

Vaezi also touched upon the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“Sometimes it is said that the US pulled out of the JCPOA because the agreement was flawed. But the reality is that the US also withdrew from many conventions, charters and old multilateral accords which were probably stronger the JCPOA,” he said.

“The JCPOA suffered serious blows due to the fact the US used all its resources, power and influence to destroy the agreement altogether, but failed to, and because it couldn’t achieve its objective, now it is using all its resources to undermine the deal,” he noted.

However, he said, the JCPOA, despite all pressure it has been under, is so strong that it has defeated Washington in the UN Security Council arena.

Number of Non-Coronavirus Patients in Iran Down by 40%: Official

Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi urged non-coronavirus patients to refer to hospitals without being worried.

“Due to the coronavirus outbreak and the high number of such patients going to hospitals, we have seen a decline in the number of hospital patients suffering from other diseases,” he said.

“Now that we have witnessed an around 40% decrease in the number of inpatients compared to the previous months, patients suffering from diabetes, heart problems and other diseases may go to hospitals to continue their treatment,” he added.

The official noted that there are no coronavirus patients in some hospitals.

“In other hospitals, too, safety principles are observed and there is no cause for concern,” he said.

Diplomats from the guarantors of the Astana format and United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen held the meeting at the United Nations Office in Geneva on Wednesday, August 26, and discussed the developments in Syria, particularly the third meeting of the Constitutional Committee, the situation in Idlib, and the task force on the exchange of abductees and missing persons.

At the beginning of the gathering, Pedersen gave a report on holding the first round of the third meeting of the Constitutional Committee.

The UN Special Envoy for Syria also expressed hope that the ceasefire in Idlib would continue, stressing the need for the exchange task force to proceed with its activities.

Diplomats representing the three guarantor states of the Astana Process also expressed their views in the meeting.

Ali-Asghar Khaji, a senior assistant to the Iranian foreign minister, expounded on Tehran’s stances on Syria at the meeting. He stressed the need to respect Syria’s national sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to fighting against terrorism in the region, especially in Syria.

He also emphasized the necessity of resolving the crisis in Syria through Syrian-Syrian dialogue and for the continuation of the Constitutional Committee’s activities, and voiced Iran’s readiness to support the continued performance of the Committee.

Khaji further called for the removal of the cruel and unilateral sanctions on the people of Syria and for the delivery of humanitarian aids to Syrians, specifically in the battle with the coronavirus pandemic.

The Iranian diplomat also highlighted the necessity for implementation of the existing agreements on Idlib, expressing hope that carrying out the agreements would establish sustainable calm in Idlib.

Khaji finally underlined the need for the resumption of activities of the exchange task force as a humanitarian and trust-building measure.

Iran’s Behaviour to Be Commensurate with IAEA’s Approach: Envoy

Iran’s Behaviour to Be Commensurate with IAEA’s Approach: Envoy

Kazem Gharibabadi urged the agency not to overstep the provisions of a joint statement between the IAEA and Tehran issued at the end of talks with the IAEA delegation led by its director general Rafael Grossi during his visit to Iran.

“Iran showed its goodwill in its interaction with the new director general of the agency,” said Gahribabadi.

“Should the agency, under any circumstances or pretext, want to trample the terms of this joint agreement underfoot in the future, or fail to act in good faith, as stipulated in the statement, … Iran’s cooperation and engagement with the agency will be affected,” he added.

“We seriously expect the agency’s director general to fully abide by the agreements reached because Iran will not tolerate it if the agency goes beyond them,” he added.
The Iranian ambassador further said Iran is the most important partner of the IAEA and is a country where one-fifth of the agency’s inspections are conducted.

“During his trip which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, Grossi met with the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), the foreign minister and the president,” he added.

“During these meetings, he heard the same thing from all those he met, [he heard] that the agency should be professional, independent and impartial, that the agency should remain on the watch for the plots hatched by enemies of Iran which themselves refuse to allow IAEA inspections and which are in possession of nuclear weapons,” said Gharibabadi.
“If Iran sees that the agency is acting in good faith, the country is ready to move forward with, and further boost cooperation with the agency within the framework of, and not beyond the law,” he noted.

Gharibabadi underlined that Grossi opted for the path of cooperation, not confrontation, with Iran.

The top Iranian envoy further said Tehran will provide the agency with “voluntary access” to its nuclear sites.

“It means Iran will not work with the agency based on a recent resolution of the [IAEA’s] Board of Governors, which Iran has rejected; rather, Iran will cooperate of its own volition,” he added.

He said Iran made it clear to the vising IAEA delegation that any political move at the IAEA’s Board of Governors will impede cooperation with the agency.

Iran ‘Voluntarily’ Allows IAEA to Access Two Locations

IAEA

That was announced in a joint statement issued by Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) following intensive bilateral talks in Tehran.

What follows is the full text of the statement:

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran) agreed to further reinforce their cooperation and enhance mutual trust to facilitate the full implementation of Iran’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement (CSA) and the Additional

Protocol (AP) thereto, which is provisionally applied by Iran since 16 January 2016.

After intensive bilateral consultations, Iran and the IAEA reached an agreement on the resolution of the safeguards implementation issues specified by the IAEA, in good faith. In this regard, Iran is voluntarily providing the IAEA with access to the two locations specified by the IAEA and facilitating the IAEA verification activities to resolve these issues.

Dates for the IAEA access and the verification activities have been agreed. The IAEA verification activities will proceed in accordance with the CSA and the AP, and the IAEA’s standard verification practice as implemented for all States with CSAs and APs on equal basis and without discrimination.

In the context of resolution GOV/2015/72 adopted by the Board of Governors on 15 December 2015, the IAEA and Iran recognize that these safeguards implementation issues are exclusively related to nuclear material and activities subject to safeguards under the CSA and the AP.

In this present context, based on analysis of available information to the IAEA, the IAEA does not have further questions to Iran and further requests for access to locations other than those declared by Iran under its CSA and AP.

Both sides recognize the independence, impartiality and professionalism of the IAEA continue to be essential in the fulfilment of its verification activities.

The IAEA will continue to take into consideration Iran’s security concerns, by protecting all safeguards confidential information in accordance with the IAEA’s Statute, the relevant provisions of the CSA and the AP, and the established IAEA confidentiality regime, standards and procedures.

Heavy flooding in northern and eastern Afghanistan has killed at least 100 people, as the deluge ravaged large parts of Charikar city, the capital of Parwan province, officials have said.

Wahida Shahkar, spokeswoman for Parwan province, said on Wednesday the number of casualties may rise as rescue teams work to locate people buried under destroyed houses.

Containing the incident and helping the affected families was beyond the capacity of the local government, and the central government should step in quickly, Shahkar said.

Many children were among the dead in Charikar, which was hit by heavy rains overnight, the Ministry of Disaster Management said in a statement.

In the Wednesday meeting, Khaji reiterated Iran’s backing for a political settlement of the Yemen crisis. He also highlighted Tehran’s constructive efforts to help put in place a nationwide ceasefire, fully lift the blockade on the country and advance the peace process.
The Iranian official also underscored the need for the UN to press ahead with its efforts to settle the Yemen crisis in a fair and realistic manner, restore the Yemeni nation’s rights, stop bloodshed and the killing of innocent people, and lift the sanctions slapped on the country, especially at a time of the coronavirus pandemic.

Iran to Continue Cooperation with IAEA: Rouhani

Iran to Continue Cooperation with IAEA

President Hassan Rouhani expressed hope the level of cooperation between Iran and the agency will increase day by day.

“In addition to its technical and specialized duties regarding the Safeguards Agreement and the Additional Protocol, which Iran is implementing voluntarily, the IAEA has an important responsibility, too, with regards to the JCPOA and the preservation of this multilateral agreement,” said Rouhani in a Wednesday meeting with visiting IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

Rouhani referred to the precise and expert reports prepared by the agency about the implementation of the JCPOA during the cooperation of the seven countries which were signatories to the deal.

“The JCPOA was a very important deal for Iran and the 5+1 group and brought about tranquility for the whole region and the world,” added the president.

Rouhani said the US withdrew from the agreement in 2018 for no good reason.
“More than two years on since the US pullout from the JCPOA, the American have well realized that what they did was not a right move,” said Rouhani.

“We hope the US will understand one day that days of unilateralism are gone,” he said.
He underlined UN Security Council members can very well feel the significance of the JCPOA.

President Rouhani said the US and one or two other countries are trying to wreck the JCPOA, saying, “We and the international community keep trying to preserve the JCPOA.”

He also said it is “very important” for the IAEA to remain independent, impartial and professional.

President Rouhani further touched upon the “good agreement” reached between the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and the IAEA.

“The agency should pay attention to a very important point, and that is Iran has sworn enemies that are always seeking to create problems for us,” said the president.

“They are the ones that both possess nuclear weapons and refuse to work with the IAEA,” he said.

The IAEA chief, in turn, expressed content with the agreement it reached with the AEOI during his trip to Iran, and emphasized the need to boost cooperation between Iran and the Agency.

He said the JCPOA was an achievement in the true sense of the word and a major yardstick for all parties, adding, “We shoulder an important responsibility for preserving it.”
He expressed hope all issues as well as technical and professional questions will be settled through further cooperation between Iran and the agency.

Grossi said Iran-IAEA cooperation should not be affected by foreign voices.
