In a statement on Monday, Khatibzadeh offered condolences over the painful attack, and expressed sympathy with the victims’ survivors as well as the Nigerian government and people.

More than 43 people have been killed in what the Nigerian president has described as an “insane” attack in north-east Nigeria on Saturday.

The attackers tied up agricultural labourers working in rice fields and slit their throats near Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, reports say.

This is one of the worst attacks in recent months in a region where the Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa insurgent groups are active.

No-one has yet claimed responsibility.

“I condemn the killing of our hard-working farmers by terrorists in Borno state. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief. May their souls rest in peace,” said President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Buhari also described “the terrorist killings as insane”, according to his spokesman Garba Shehu.

Mossad, MKO Behind Assassination of Iranian Scientist: Top Security Official

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of burial of the late Iranian scientist on Monday, Shamkhani said Israel and its espionage service, Mossad, have masterminded the complicated assassination attack on Fakhrizadeh.

He noted that the terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) has been also involved in the strike.

Pointing to the clues that Iran has found about the attack, Shamkhani said, “It has become clear to us who has masterminded this and what its background is. The Munafeqin (Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization terrorists) have been involved for sure, and the criminal element in this job is definitely the Zionist regime and the Mossad.”

“Unfortunately, the operation was a very complicated one. It took place with the employment of electronic equipment. No person (assassin) was present at the scene,” he explained, confirming an earlier report by Fars News Agency.

He said the Iranian intelligence systems had “precisely predicted the possibility of occurrence of an attack on him (Fakhrizadeh) and the possible location of the incident”, but the required seriousness was not taken into account this time “because of the frequency of reports (of possible attacks) over these 20 years”.

The enemy had carried many abortive operations throughout these year, which have not been publicized, the senior security official added.

Fakhrizadeh, a senior nuclear and defence scientist, was assassinated in a small city east of Tehran on November 27.

In a message after the incident, Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei called on all relevant administrators to “investigate this crime and firmly prosecute its perpetrators and its commanders” and “to continue the martyr’s scientific and technological efforts in all the sectors where he was active.”

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh Laid to Rest in Tehran

The senior scientist was buried at Imamzadeh Saleh mosque in Tajrish Square of Tehran’s Shemiran district on Monday.

The burial came after a detailed funeral ceremony held in the morning.
The cortege began at the Ministry of Defence in east Tehran, with top state and military officials on hand to pay their respect to a man who played a leading role in bolstering Iran’s defence power and advancing its nuclear energy program.

An honour guard carried the casket containing his remains.

The ceremony was attended by top Iranian officials including Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami and Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

At an outdoor portion of the Defence Ministry, Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Hossein Salami, the IRGC’s Quds Force head Brigadier Gen. Esmail Qa’ani, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Sahei and Intelligence Minister Mamoud Alavi sat apart from each other and wore masks due to the coronavirus pandemic as a reciter read several verses of the holy Qur’an.

Iran Not to Leave Fakhrizadeh’s Assassination Unanswered: DM

On Sunday, Fakhrizadeh’s body was flown to the holy city of Mashhad, where it was taken inside the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the eight infallible imam of Shiite Muslims.

It was then transferred to the holy city of Qom for a visit to the shrine of Fatima Masoumeh, the sister of Imam Reza (AS) and to the mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini outside Tehran.

Iran Not to Leave Fakhrizadeh’s Assassination Unanswered: DM

Speaking at the deceased scientist’s funeral ceremony on Monday, Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami said the enemy knows that the Iranian nation will not leave any crime, act of terrorism, and stupid move unanswered.

“We will definitely track down the criminals until the end. They should know they will be punished for what they did. We will execute the order issued by the chief-commander of Iranian armed forces,” he noted.

The defence minister said the assassination of Fakhrizadeh will only boost the solidarity and determination of the Iranian nation, making Iran more resolved to continue his path and accelerate the country’s progress.

He then addressed the international sponsors of the assassination and said, “You think you’re closing a path or breaking a determination through this move; but you should know that will not happen.”

He expressed gratitude to the nations and governments that felt responsible and denounced the terrorist act, but scolded the other governments and international bodies that failed to condemn it.

“These countries [that didn’t condemn the attack] must know that appeasing terrorists emboldens them. If you fail to take a firm stance and remain trapped in your double views, terrorism will one day haunt you,” he noted.

Hatami said that Iran will continue its fight against terrorism as it did in Iraq and Syria, no matter how other countries treat terrorists.

“Whoever bows to terrorists will abase itself,” the defence minister noted.

Fakhrizadeh’s Efforts to Develop COVID-19 Vaccine in Iran Bearing Fruit: Official

In a message released on Sunday, head of the Coronavirus Battle Headquarters of Tehran paid tribute to Fakhrizadeh as a prominent scientist and distinguished scholar in research, technology and the health sector.

Alireza Zali said the head of the Defense Ministry’s Research and Innovation Organization, who was assassinated on Friday, devoted his life to the promotion of science and technology in the country, and was a pioneer of not only the defense industry, but also the battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

Fakhrizadeh’s programme to make an Iranian vaccine for COVID-19 is yielding results, as the tireless efforts of the late scientist and his colleagues have advanced the project to the stage of human tests, Zali added.

He also noted that the Defense Ministry’s Research and Innovation Organization rushed to help the medical society immediately after the outbreak of coronavirus and manufactured the first Iranian diagnostic test kit for COVID-19.

Iran’s success to produce a homegrown test kit that meets the international standards was a thorn in the side of the enemies, he added.

Zali finally made it clear to the enemies that assassination of Fakhrizadeh would not slow down Iran’s scientific progress and will instead strengthen his students’ resolve to make headway more vigorously.

Fakhrizadeh, a senior nuclear and defence scientist, was assassinated by unknown gunmen in a small city east of Tehran on Friday evening.

After sustaining injuries from a car explosion and bullets, Fakhrizadeh was taken to the hospital with a helicopter, but succumbed to injuries a few hours later.

Iranian Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami has lauded Fakhrizadeh as a key figure in Iran’s fight against coronavirus, saying the deceased was the leader of a team that developed one of the first Iranian kits for diagnosis of coronavirus.

Zarif Says His Relationship with Biden Based on Mutual Respect

In an interview with the Entekhab news website, Mohammad Javad Zarif said Biden looks at foreign policy from a perspective different from that of outgoing President Donald Trump.

Zarif noted that his past relationship with Biden cannot be described as friendly; rather, it was only a professional relationship.

“The relationship between an Iranian agent and an American senator is not a friendly one and can be described as a work-related one,” he said.

“These relations cannot even be called personal and good; rather, they can be described as professional relations based on mutual respect,” Zarif added.

“When I was Iran’s representative to the UN, I had several meetings with Biden at a specialized level. Biden surely has a different view toward foreign policy from that of Trump,” said Zarif.

“Biden has had a role in the United States’ foreign policy arena since 1970 and is more familiar with foreign policy than Trump is, but this does not mean that his stances are acceptable. We should note that Biden’s positions reflect the US government’s approach anyway,” he said.

“Definitely, Biden acts in line with the United States’ national interests. But the key issue during the Trump era was that the White House had handed over foreign policy to Israel and [its prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu. There is no doubt that Zionist pressure groups have had an effective role in the US foreign policy since the establishment of the Israeli regime. However, Trump hand handed over this significant arena to Netanyahu, who is an extremist figure in the Zionist regime, and to an extremist and radical circle which was actually run by the ISIS, Al-Nusra Front and all extremists in the region and across the world,” he said.

Zarif Says His Relationship with Biden Based on Mutual Respect“The US government will definitely have fundamental problems with the Islamic Republic of Iran during the Biden administration as did Obama. During Obama’s presidency, relations between Tehran and Washington were not friendly, either, and there were differences to some extent; however, part of unnecessary tensions between the two sides had subsided. But during Trump’s presidency, tensions between Iran and the US were at their highest in 40 years. It seems there is no need for this trend to continue,” said Zarif.

The top diplomat underlined that the issue of Tehran’s stance on the US should not turn into a partisan matter in Iran.

“I don’t see foreign policy as a partisan matter. In other words, foreign policy should be planned based on a non-partisan basis. But, unfortunately, this issue is ignored in our country by some parties. We should be seeking [to safeguard our] national interests, whether in the 12th administration (Hassan Rouhani’s second four-year term in office) or in the 13th administration,” he said.

“Negotiations between Iran and the US began in the 10th administration with the Supreme Leader’s blessing. The same people in the eleventh and twelfth administrations who were opposed to talks with the US had been opposed to negotiations in the tenth administration, too,” he said.

He urged Iranian political factions not to turn foreign policy into a partisan row as it will be to the detriment of Iran’s national interests.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Zarif described the Trump administration a “rogue” one which pulled out of numerous agreements, including the 2015 Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Zarif said the JCPOA was a strong agreement which Washington tried to abuse.

He said the US government failed to fully abide by its commitments even during the Obama administration.

The Iranian foreign minister said the US keeps violating one of the fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter, i.e., the principle of not resorting to force.

“For example, the US attacked Iraq,” he said.

Zarif said the United States has always had power in the outside world and has been able to exert force.

“But what was important was that we refused to succumb to Washington’s pressure,” he noted.

Even under Obama, said Zarif, the US was able to make the moves that it did during the Trump administration, but it didn’t.

Zarif Says His Relationship with Biden Based on Mutual Respect

Elsewhere in his remarks, Zarif touched upon the US presidential election.

“I feel two groups support Trump in Iran. One group is those who call themselves opponents of globalists and they feel they and Trump are like-minded, which is regrettable. Of course, Mr. Trump may be an isolationist, but he is definitely not an anti-globalism element,” said he top diplomat.

“In the foreign policy arena, Mr. Trump is an agent of Zionists and implements the policies of reactionary countries in the region,” he said.

“The analysis by all of us until six months ago suggested that Mr. Trump will be re-elected, … but the tables were turned,” he added.

Zarif criticized those who tied their victory in the upcoming Iranian presidential vote to the reelection of Trump.

“They said they would certainly win in the 2021 Iran presidential election if Trump won, but now this certainty has been questioned,” said Zarif.

“It would be bad for us to plan our elections based on developments outside Iran,” said the foreign minister.

“Another point is that they are supporting Trump, who has killed general Soleimani and has been involved in the murder of thousands of Iranians, who have lost their lives due to a lack of medicine, poverty and unsuitable social conditions. Trump has had a role in all of these cases. Even he himself had said that the US wanted to exert so much pressure on Iran that it would destroy Iran’s economy,” he said.

Zarif underlined it is not understandable why some people are backing a person who wanted to destroy the economy of their country.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Zarif touched upon Iran’s relations with other countries.

“At the same time that we have good relations with China and Russia, we should have good relations with Turkey and Europe as well,” he said.

Zarif said Russia and China have had key roles in Iran’s foreign policy.

“We should have a tension-free relationship with the US, too,” the top diplomat said.
