Iran Rejects Pompeo’s ‘Baseless’ Claim about Tehran’s Ties to Al-Qaeda

In a Tuesday statement, Saeed Khatibzadeh dismissed the allegation as a rehash of old accusations.

“Repeating accusations and showing fabricated documents under the name of revealing confidential information by Pompeo, the US secretary of state, in the one week left until the rebellious rule of the Trump regime ends, shows their desperation and the failure of the ‘maximum pressure’ policy against Iran,” he said.

“Resorting to such ploys and threadbare and baseless claims can, by no means, help the terrorist US regime correct its path, which is full of mistakes, and restore the unjustifiable image of the officials of this regime,” Khatibzadeh noted.

“Earlier, Pompeo had, once again, during the time he was the head of the CIA, and in exchange for petrodollars, sought to establish a fabricated link between Iran and al-Qaeda in order to use chantage and false propaganda to shift responsibility and pressure from US allies, which were the accused in the case of Al-Qaeda and support for the September 11 disaster,” he added.

“However, until the end of the tenure of the Trump administration, he failed to make the US and the world’s public opinion believe the story he had made up,” he said.

He stressed that Iranian officials have given the proper response to such blame games and Hollywood-style scenarios through all these years.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, which itself has been a victim of the US state terrorism and the groups it supported, has a brilliant and defensible track record in fighting al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorism, and believes this page of the show staged by the radical camp in the US will not contribute to their thirst for, and addiction to sanctions or acts to trigger tensions,” he added.

Rouhani Dismisses Concerns over COVID-19 Vaccine Supply

Speaking after a trilateral meeting of heads of the theee Iranian branches of power, held on Tuesday, President Rouhani dismissed the speculations about the COVID-19 vaccine supply in the virtual space that may concern people.

“One of the important issues for the administration at this juncture is undoubtedly supplying the (coronavirus) vaccine needed by people,” the president emphasized.

President Rouhani then gave an assurance that the administration would take all necessary measures to develop a homegrown vaccine and make purchases from the reliable companies that are a hundred percent trustworthy.

“The administration has also applied for vaccine from COVAX and has made a payment. Millions of doses of vaccine have been purchased in that way that would be supplied and the vaccination will be carried out,” the president added.

The president then pointed to the topics discussed in the trilateral meeting with the Judiciary chief and the Parliament speaker, citing the health of people, livelihood conditions, and the nullification of the cruel sanctions.

Highlighting the administration’s success to reduce the coronavirus death toll to a two-digit number after months, the president said it is important to preserve the declining fatality rates.

On the plans to support and improve the livelihood of people, President Rouhani said Iran has been grappling with a massive economic war for three years, but the people have overcome major problems with resistance and fortitude.

The president noted that the next year’s national budget proposed by the administration has focused on the livelihood conditions, expressing hope that the coordination with the heads of the Parliament and the Judiciary would help achieve the budgetary targets and serve the national interests and development.

Like the past two years, the administration has cut off the current budget’s dependence on the oil revenues in the proposed budget bill, the president added.

He further denounced the cruel sanctions the enemies have imposed on Iran, stressing that the sanctions must be lifted in order for “commitment vis-à-vis commitment”.

Echoing remarks by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the president said Iran would take a practical step in response to every practical step from the other side.

Iran Condemns US Designation of Cuba as State Sponsor of Terror

In a Tuesday statement, Saeed Khatibzadeh stressed Iran’s solidarity with the ideals of the Cuban government and nation in resisting the symbols of global hegemony.

“Like other baseless allegations raised by the US, the claim that Cuba has been working with Venezuela on terrorism stems from the Americans’ disgusting habit of levelling false accusations against their opponents,” he said.

“The officials of the failed Trump regime keep trying to fulfill their unfulfilled desires and take unilateral actions during their final days in power,” Khatibzadeh said.

Euphoric at their country’s exceptionalism, he added, the Trump administration has turned into a source of tension in the world and has done nothing but destroying international achievements and making the US more hated.

Khatibzadeh said the Trump administration’s officials have not even learned a lesson from their defeat in the recent US election and once again showed their unruly and chaotic nature in the recent US Capoitol incident.

“It is necessary to remind the terrorist US regime that Cuba, as an active member of the UN and a leading country in the fight against imperialism and global hegemony, and in line with its right to national sovereignty, is completely free to establish contacts with its neighbours in the Latin American region or other areas in the world and promote its cooperation levels, and no country, especially the United States, has the right to interfere in Cuba’s internal affairs or dictate to Cuba what country to establish or not to establish relations with,” the spokesman noted.

“We dismiss this move by the terrorist US regime and its political officials for its double standards on masterminds and perpetrators behind the assassination of General Soleimani as well as the US supporting and leading of operations by the ISIS terrorist group, and reiterates its determination and will to back and cement ties with Cuba,” he said.

Iran Rules Out Fresh Talks with Incoming US Administration

New US Sanctions Not to Affect Iran’s Activities: Spokesman

“What the US needs to do is to stop breaking the law and violating its international commitments under the UN Security Council resolutions. That doesn’t need negotiation, because a country’s fulfilment of its duty shouldn’t be the subject of negotiation or give-and-take,” Rabiei said in a press conference Tuesday.

“Iran, in turn, has repeatedly announced that it will return to the full implementation of its commitments once the US lives up to its commitments and lift the sanctions. This doesn’t need any negotiation, either,” he added.

However, Rabiei said, some Western countries want to renegotiate issues that have already been negotiated and included in the JCPOA.

“In our view, this is not possible. Iran, Russia, and China have earlier expressed their clear opposition to this. If the next US administration delivers its commitments and abandon the previous methods, it is possible [to hold talks] to reach a settlement on Iran’s return to its commitments within the pre-existing and legal frameworks.”

“As I said, we don’t currently need any negotiation. Our return to our commitments doesn’t need any talks. The other issues have already been discussed; and we have already said how far the JCPOA can go. Adding them to the nuclear deal is not acceptable to Iran. So we won’t hold talks on these issues, either,” he added.

International Water, Electricity Exhibitions Kick Off in Tehran

The two events were opened at Tehran’s international fairground in a ceremony attended by Ardakanian, Iraqi Trade Minister Alla Ahmed Hassan and several other foreign guests.

Some 275 Iranian and foreign companies are taking part in the WATEX 2021 and IEE 2021, which are held in compliance with health protocols.

The exhibitions will remain open until January 15, 2021, from 9 am to 5 pm only to water and electricity professionals and experts as well as industry managers and economic activists.

Iran, Iraq Resolved to Meet $20 Billion Trade Target: Energy Minister

Iran, Iraq Resolved to Meet $20 Billion Trade Target: Energy Minister

Delivering a speech to Iran-Iraq Economic Conference on Tuesday, Ardakanian said the main and common target of the two neighbors at the level of political leaders is to increase the value of annual bilateral trade exchanges to $20 billion.

The energy minister explained that achievement of the trade target requires plans to allow the private sector to get involved in the economic activities freely, remove the trade obstacles, set up a joint investment fund, and settle the problems arising in the transportation industry, standard and customs issues, or the preferential trade arrangements.

The Iranian Energy Ministry has been tasked three months ago with handling the affairs of Iran-Iraq Economic Cooperation Joint Commission, he noted, saying the first successful plan was to convene the commission after six years.

“The main purpose of the fourth meeting of the Economic Cooperation Joint Commission is to create facilities for the private sectors in the trade and economic activities,” the minister said, adding that there are also plans to strengthen cooperation between the state-run organizations.

Ardakanian further expressed hope that negotiations among the participants in the conference, held on January 12 and 13 within the framework of four expert sub-committees on technical and engineering services, consular affairs, monetary and banking issues, and trade affairs, would result in agreements.

The Iranian minister also stressed the need to expedite the implementation of joint projects in the energy and transportation industries, customs affairs, as well as construction and health sectors, and warned the state organizations to avoid the obstructive and bureaucratic obstacles that may impede the activities of private sectors.

At the conclusion of the conference, Ardekanian and Iraqi Trade Minister Alla Ahmed Hassan visited an exhibition of Iranian and Iraqi products, held at the Energy Ministry of Iran.

The 4th session of Iran-Iraq Economic Cooperation Joint Commission kicked off on Tuesday morning, attended by high-ranking officials and business people from the two countries.

The commission is going to weigh plans for stronger cooperation in various sectors with an eye to the geographical, cultural and religious commonalities between the two Muslim neighbors.

Participants in the meeting are also planned to discuss the ways to boost economic ties, promote exports, and evaluate the markets for optimum productivity in various sectors, such as the transportation and energy industries, tourism sector, construction projects, and water and electricity industries.

Makran Forward Base Ship Joins Iran’s Navy Fleet

The huge ship is said to be the biggest forward base ship in the Middle East, and enjoys special support capabilities.

Makran can serve both the naval flotilla of the Iranian Army, and other Iranian cargo vessels.

Admiral Hossein Khanzadi, the commander of the Iranian Navy, said in September that Makran will be able to carry six to seven helicopters.

He said the ship can also be used for a wide range of missions, including e-warfare, missile, drone, chopper, and even special operations.

He did not give details about its size, but said Makran will be 24 metres longer than Iran’s Kharg vessel.

The forward base ship is said to be similar to the American-made Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) ships.

Trump’s Moves in Region Discrediting US: Iran

No Change in Iran’s Borders as Karabakh Peace Deal Unfolds: Spokesman

Speaking in a Monday press conference, Saeed Khatibzadeh said Iran condemns Washington’s backing for the Saudi war on Yemen.

“The US has supported an unfair war in Yemen for years, an embarrassing war against defenceless people,” he said.

“They have put 20 million Yemenis under complete blockade. The people of Yemen will never forget that they were under a complete blockade where they were unable to receive medicine, foods, bread and water,” said the spokesman.

“Epidemic diseases have gripped the whole of Yemen. These things would not have happened if the US hadn’t given Saudi Arabia and its allies carte blanche to do so,” he said.

“After years of bombarding Yemen, they have now got to a point where they are hiding their inability behind these actions which are doomed to fail,” Khatibzadeh noted.

He said US actions in the region like its support for the Yemen war and the blacklisting of officials who are against Washington will further erode the United States’ credibility.

“During its final days in power, this bankrupt government of the United States is not unlikely to deal another blow to the US credibility and make the legacy it has left behind in the region all the more poisonous,” he said.

“The US is very concerned about the Iraqi parliament’s legislation which demands the expulsion of American troops from Iraq,” he added.

“Neither the US nor any other unruly country in this region can make a move unless they respect realities in this region. The day is close at hand when they will sit down for talks with domestic groups in different countries, including Yemen.”

“The measures they adopt are worthless, and the Trump regime is going through its final days in office,” he explained.

Iran President Praises Local Firms Working to Develop COVID-19 Vaccine

President Hassan Rouhani said the government seeks to procure and produce a safe vaccine.

Hence, he added, the government supports all knowledge-based firms and centres which are trying to develop and purchase vaccines for the COVID-19 virus.

“The government’s top priority is to secure people’s health. So, among the key objectives in the fight against this virus is to provide, buy and produce a safe vaccine for coronavirus,” the president said.

“The government will stand by knowledge-based companies and the executive committee tasked with producing a vaccine for coronavirus, and will support all scientists working in this field to produce a safe vaccine,” he noted.

Iran‌ Says Won’t Remain Indifferent toward South Korea’s Seizure of Its Assets

“$7 billion in assets belonging to the Iranian nation have been blocked at South Korean banks for more than two years now,” Hemmati said in a meeting with South Korea’s First Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jung-kun.

“This is something unacceptable, and Iran will definitely not remain indifferent if this continues,” he added, expressing hope his talks with the South Korean official will bear fruit.

“South Korean banks have seized our assets for years, and they refuse to clarify the issue,” said Hemmati.

“Our assets have even gained no interest,” he said.
He underlined Tehran’s key challenge with South Korea is its seizure of Iranian assets.

“We had assets in other countries as well, but we gained access to them and were able to use them despite the US sanctions,” he noted.

“But regarding South Korea, which is one of Iran’s key trade partners, still we have not been able to gain access to our assets in this country,” he said.

“This behaviour of South Korea is a big mistake, and it is basically unacceptable for South Korea to block Iran’s assets upon orders by a third country,” he noted.

He said if this issue is not settled, Iran will move forward with the legal proceedings which it has already started.
