Negotiations on dividing territory between Moscow and Kiev ongoing: Trump

Donald Trump

“It’s being negotiated as we speak,” the president told journalists on Friday, referring to a possible solution to both sides territorial demands

Four former Ukrainian territories – Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions as well as two Donbass Republics – officially joined Russia in autumn 2022 following a series of referendums. Kiev has never recognized the votes and continues to claim sovereignty over the regions, as well as over Crimea, which joined Russia back in 2014. The Ukrainian military still controls parts of Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.

Trump did not provide any details about the ongoing negotiations. He added he had had “very good discussions” with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, adding that “we have the confines of a deal.”

He also stated that the two sides were “going to have a ceasefire on a lot of areas” followed by a “full ceasefire.”

Trump’s statement came ahead of meetings on the Ukraine conflict scheduled for Monday. Washington plans to hold “indirect talks” with Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia, according to Keith Kellogg, the US special envoy for Ukraine.

American and Ukrainian delegations held discussions in the Saudi city of Jeddah last week. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that territorial concessions were one of the issues broached at the meeting. Following the negotiations, Kiev said it would agree to a 30-day ceasefire.

Putin has also since stated that he is open to the idea of a ceasefire, but stressed that several issues must first be addressed – including the fate of Ukraine’s forces encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region, as well as guarantees that Kiev will not use the truce to rearm and replenish its ranks.

Russia has previously opposed a temporary truce, emphasizing it would prefer a permanent solution addressing the “root causes” of the conflict instead. Moscow also repeatedly stated that it was ready for a dialogue. Putin has stressed an immediate ceasefire could happen if Kiev begins withdrawing from Russian territory, including the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions.

Two Iranian youths rescued from drug cartel near US-Mexico border home

The mission was carried out by the Iranian Embassy in Mexico City in close coordination with Mexican police.

The two individuals, whose identities were withheld, had attempted to migrate to the United States and found themselves stranded near the border, where they were ensnared by drug trafficking cartels.

Their families, upon learning of their location, alerted the Iranian Embassy, which immediately initiated efforts to secure their release.

After intense negotiations and collaboration with Mexican authorities, the two were successfully rescued and flown back to Iran in the early hours of the Persian New Year on Thursday.

The Iranian Embassy emphasized the dangers of illegal migration and warned against falling prey to human traffickers and misleading social media content.

“Many who post videos of migration routes are fraudsters on cyberspace seeking to attract followers or clients. The reality is far more dangerous, and countless lives have been lost in such attempts,” the embassy warned.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry urged Iranian citizens to avoid risking their lives and to be wary of deceptive promises made by smugglers.

Millions of Iranians participate in Laylat al-Qadr night vigils

Laylat al-Qadr, believed to be worth more than a thousand months, is a night when Muslims believe their destiny for the year is decided. According to Islamic scriptures, angels descend to Earth to listen to the prayers of worshippers.

While the exact date of Laylat al-Qadr is disputed, it is widely observed on the 19th, 21st, and 23rd nights of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan. Many worshippers hold vigils on all three nights to ensure they do not miss the blessed occasion.

Massive congregations were held in the holy cities of Mashhad and Qom, home to the shrines of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam, and his sister, Hazrat Masoumeh, respectively.

Similar large-scale gatherings took place in other cities, including Tehran, where worshippers filled mosques and religious centers for night-long prayers and Qur’an recitations.

The 21st night of Ramadan holds additional significance for Shia Muslims, as it marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ali, the first Shia Imam and the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad.
