Iranian, Italian Foreign Ministers Hold Talks in Rome

In the Monday meeting, the Iranian foreign minister reviewed bilateral collaborations in political, economic, and cultural fields, highlighted the historical relations among Iranian and Italian people and the 160-year-old ties between the two countries’ governments, and pointed to the existing capacities for economic cooperation, especially among private companies and small- and medium-sized enterprises of the two states.

He further highlighted the Iranian people’s positive attitude towards cooperation with the Italian side, and underlined the necessity of removing the barriers and preparing for resumption of interactions between the two sides’ economic sectors in line with the interests of Iran and Italy.

Referring to the virtual emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), where the Zionist regime’s racist and hawkish measures against the people of occupied territories and Gaza were strongly condemned, and also pointing to his meeting with the Damascus-based leaders of Palestinian groups, Foreign Minister Zarif elaborated on Iran’s principled viewpoint regarding the need for holding a referendum in which all Palestinians with any faith and religion can participate.

The Iranian top diplomat once again condemned the Zionist regime’s move to launch brutish attacks against the people of Palestine.

Issues related to cooperation with Persian Gulf littoral states and regional arrangements among the countries of the region, issues related to Yemen, Afghanistan, Iraq, and the latest developments pertaining to the Vienna talks were also discussed by Zarif in this meeting.

The Italian foreign minister, in turn, expressed his country’s interest in expanding its bilateral cooperation with Iran, especially in political, economic, and cultural fields.

He expressed support for the full implementation of the JCPOA by all parties, and called for active consultations and exchange of views with Iran on important regional and international affairs.

Italy is the second leg of his European tour which earlier took him to Madrid, Spain.

The Austrian capital of Vienna was also on his itinerary, but the visit was called off in protest at Austria’s move to hoist the Israeli flag on top of government buildings.

Zarif’s meeting with his Italian counterpart coincided with the delivery of 1.4 million doses of Italian-made AstraZeneca vaccines to Iran.

Iranian Filmmaker Killed, Dismembered by His Father

Pieces of Khorramdin’s body was found in a trash bin near his house in Tehran’s Ekbatan neighbourhood, Mohammad Shahriyari said on Monday.

The father has confessed that he has drugged his son before dismembering him and throwing him in the trash bin, the head of Tehran’s Criminal Court added.

Babak Khorramdin was born in 1974 in Tehran. He graduated from Tehran University of Fine Arts in 2009, and moved to London to further his education.

His most important work is “An Eulogy for Yashar”, which was made in 2013 and was inspired by the life of a student studying abroad.

Khorramdin had also made several other short and feature films, for which he received awards at various festivals.

Iran to Receive 1.4 Million Doses of Italian-Made COVID-19 Vaccine

According to Kianoush Jahanpour, the vaccines will be imported as part of Iran’s purchases from the UN-backed COVAX program.

Earlier in the day, Iran received one million doses of the Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine.

According to Jahanpour, these two deliveries increase the total number of jabs imported into Iran to 5.6 million doses.

So far, according to the Health Ministry’s statistics, 2.26 million doses of vaccines have been administered.

Some 1.9 million people have so far received the first shot, and more than 370,000 have received both doses.

Rouhani, Erdogan Say World Must Show Powerful Response to Israeli Aggression

In a telephone conversation on Sunday, Rouhani referred to Israel’s recent “acts of aggression” in the Holy Quds and the “cowardly” killing of the oppressed people of Palestine, and said, “The issue of Palestine is the most important common issue of the Islamic community and confronting these crimes and the rapid termination of brutal attacks and killing of oppressed, defenceless people is a must.”

“Islamic countries, especially Iran and Turkey, as two important and effective countries in the region, should collaborate with each other and take advantage of all international potentialities, including the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, to confront the aggressions and crimes of the Zionist Regime,” he noted.

He also stressed the importance of taking common stances and developing Tehran-Ankara relations for resolving regional crises, including in Syria and Yemen, adding, “The continuation of this cooperation within the framework of the Astana Process negotiations can facilitate the settlement of the crises.”

Rouhani also referred to the successful holding of the recent meeting of the Joint Economic Commission of Iran and Turkey, expressing hope that the economic and commercial relations, including the facilitation of banking cooperation and the activity of the two countries’ border crossings, would further facilitate.

The President went on to refer to the negotiations in Vienna for revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), stating that the Islamic Republic of Iran has laid the groundwork for the revival of the deal by showing its good will.

“Today, the entire world, including the United States as the party that has imposed sanctions on Iran, has come to the conclusion that sanctions and maximum pressures have failed.”

He said the only solution is the lifting of sanctions and observing international rules and regulations and the full implementation of the JCPOA.

“There is no doubt that if the parties to the international agreement, especially the US, have serious and good will, these negotiations will have positive and constructive achievements.”

Rouhani also referred to the conditions of Iran and Turkey amid the outbreak of coronavirus, and Iran’s achievements in controlling the fourth wave of the disease, stressing the two countries’ cooperation by sharing experiences in fighting the pandemic.
Erdogan, in turn, said, “Unfortunately, these days we are witnessing Israel’s crimes and brutal attacks in Palestine, which is very worrying.”

“The international community must show powerful, deterrent reaction to Israel’s insolent attacks on the oppressed people of Palestine,” he added.

Referring to today’s extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Erdogan expressed hope that an appropriate decision would be made at the meeting to end these crimes and brutal killings.

Referring to the recent meeting of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation between the two countries, the Turkish President stressed the need to strengthen and deepen economic and trade relations between Turkey and Iran, as two friendly and neighbouring countries, and expressed hope that the meeting of the two countries to develop strategic cooperation would be held in the near future.”

Iran Launches ‘Simorgh’ Supercomputer, Will Build Another in Memory of Mirzakhani

Azari Jahromi made the remarks in a tweet on Sunday, when the country launched a homegrown supercomputer named “Simorgh”, which is a benevolent, mythical bird of prey in Iranian mythology and literature.

In his tweet, the ICT minister vowed that the next supercomputer, whose development began today, will be named “Maryam” in memory of Mirzakhani.

He said the capacity of “Maryam” will be 100 times more than Simorgh.

Maryam Mirzakhani, the internationally-renowned Iranian mathematician and the first female winner of Fields Medal, died of breast cancer in July 2017.

The 40-year-old mathematician, a professor at Stanford University, was the first Iranian woman elected to the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in May 2016, in recognition of her “distinguished and continuing achievement in original research.”

With past honourees, including renowned physicist Albert Einstein, and inventors Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell, being a member of the organization is considered to be as one of the highest achievements for scientists in the United States.

Born in 1977 in Tehran, Mirzakhani was raised in the Iranian capital. As a brilliant teenager, she won gold medals in both the International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong 1994), in which she scored 41 out of 42 points, and the International Mathematical Olympiad (Canada 1995) with a perfect score of 42 out of 42 points, ranking her first jointly with 14 other participants.
