Iran Election 2021: People Start Voting for New President

The polls opened at 7 am local time for the vote.
Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Khamenei Khamenei cast the ceremonial first ballot in the election.

Opinion polling and analysts have put judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi as the dominant front-runner in a field of four candidates.

Former Central Bank governor, Abdolnasser Hemmati, is running as the race’s moderate candidate.

More than 59 million voters are eligible to vote among Iran’s more than 80 million people.

However, the state-linked Iranian Student Polling Agency has estimated a turnout of just 42%, which would be the lowest ever since the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran.

Iran’s Zarif in Turkey to Attend Antalya Diplomacy Forum

Iran’s Foreign Minister Leaves Turkey for Russia

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh, the Iranian Foreign Minister will deliver a speech at the Forum on Iran’s neighbourliness doctrine and elaborate on Iran’s policies regarding the issue.

“On the sidelines of this forum, the Iranian Foreign Minister will hold meetings with a number of high-ranking officials, including the Foreign Ministers participating in the event, and will also take part in a trilateral meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Iran, Turkey and Afghanistan,” Khatibzadeh said on Thursday.

The Antalya Diplomacy Forum will open on Friday, June 18, 2021, with a speech by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The meeting will be attended by high-ranking officials and foreign ministers of various countries, the heads of international and regional organisations, and prominent diplomats.

New opportunities for peace and cooperation in the South Caucasus, reinforcement of regional solidarity, regional collaborations in Asia, relations with Africa, the issues of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, transatlantic relations, the issues of refugees and immigrants, economic diplomacy and trade, communications and the spread of fake news in the cyberspace are among the most important issues which will be discussed at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.

Iran’s Leader Urges Huge Turnout in June 18 Presidential Election

Iran’s Leader Urges Huge Turnout in June 18 Presidential Election

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said people’s choice on election day will definitely influence all key economic and non-economic issues the country is facing.

The Leader also touched upon efforts by the enemy to create voter apathy, undermine Iran and then ratchet up pressure on the country and interfere in the country’s political and economic affairs.

“People, especially the deprived class, are right to have grievances as to why not enough is done to solve their livelihood problems, but these problems should be settled by choosing a strong, powerful and indefatigable person,” said the Leader.

Ayatollah Khamenei urged a huge voter turnout on election day to deal a blow to the enemy.

“In Friday’s election, the turnout is the first priority, and the choice that people make comes next,” he explained.

He said the enemy’s propaganda campaigns are aimed at ruining people’s mindset about the election and, if possible, intervene in the ballot.

“They (the enemy) wouldn’t like the grandeur and glory of Iran’s election to be revealed, but to the enemy’s dismay, elections have always been held on time and with the participation of people,” he noted.

Jalili, Zakani Drop Out of Iran’s Presidential Race in Favour of Raisi

Jalili announced his decision on Wednesday afternoon, and Zakani did so on Thursday morning.

In reaction to Jalili’s withdrawal, Raisi said, “Dr. Saeid Jalili’s commitment-driven and timely decision indicated his revolutionary commitment and devotion.”

“I appreciated his untiring efforts,” he added.

“Today, is the day for a major campaign to help Iran take a leap,” the message further read.

Earlier, the reformist candidate Mohsen Mehralizadeh had dropped in favour of Abdolnasser Hemmati, the former moderate governor of the Central Bank of Iran.

Now only Mohsen Rezaei, Abdolnasser Hemmati, Amir-Hossein Qazizadeh Hashemi, and Ebrahim Raisi have remained in the race.

Reformist Leader Khatami Praises Mehralizadeh for Dropping Out of Election

In a message on Wednesday, Khatami described Mehralizadeh’s move as a “responsible act of sacrifice” at the current “sensitive juncture”, where the Republicanism of Iran is in serious danger.

He said the move by Mehralizadeh will help prevent the split of the votes of those who seek to vote and not give in to the rival’s imposition of its demand on society.

Iranian Reformist Presidential Contender Withdraws from Race

Mohsen Mehralizadeh

In a letter to the Interior Ministry, the nominee announced his withdrawal from the election.

“Mr. Mohsen Mehralizadeh has, in a letter to the Interior Ministry, announced his pullout from the election,” said Ali Tajernia, the spokesman for Mehralizadeh’s election headquarters.

“An official statement will be issued in this regard in a matter of hours,” said the spokesman.

The positions of Mehralizadeh and Abdolnasaer Hemmati, another presidential contender, are close to those of reformists.

However, the reformist camp had announced earlier that it will not field any candidates in this election, and did not endorse Hemmati, either.

Iran’s presidential election will be held on June 18, 2021 and, with Mehralizadeh having withdrawn, six candidates have remained in the race.

There are also reports that Alireza Zakani will withdraw from the race in favour of Raisi.

Top Sunni Cleric Endorses Ebrahim Raisei for Iran’s Presidential Election

In a statement, Molana Abd-ul-Hamid’s office announced that he backs the stance of the Sunnis’ Consultative Council in support of Raisei.

“The discussions and a statement by the [Sunnis’] Consultative Council signed and agreed by most members of the council are approved and supported by Sheikh-ul-Eslam Molana Abd-ul-Hamid,” the statement read.

“The verdict has been issued based on the deliberations and consultations of some members of this committee with the [presidential] candidates, especially Ayatollah Raisei, as well has his phone conversation with Sheikh-ul-Eslam Molana Abd-ul-Hamid, and [based on] the pledges given by Ayatollah Raisei and senior members of his [election campaign] headquarters regarding the administration of justice and tackling problems, injustice and inequality,” read the statement.

Iranian Intranasal COVID-19 Vaccine in Pre-Clinical Trial Stage

“With the production of an Iranian intranasal coronavirus vaccine, which is going through the final stages of pre-clinical trials, a national and global overhaul will take place in the domain of health technology and vaccines,” said Kianoosh Jahanpour, the spokesperson for the organization.

“The development of this intranasal vaccine has raised much hope and will amount to a giant step and indicate Iran’s leading role in the vaccine and health technology domain on the international stage,” he added.

“Iranian researchers have been working on this vaccine for months, and we are waiting to see it enter clinical phase studies,” said the spokesman.

“This vaccine will be used as a nasal spray in two to three phases,” he said.

“Early studies of this vaccine conducted on different animals were rather successful,” said Jahanpour.
