Amir Abdollahian : Tehran supports Iraqi govt., people, regional peace

Speaking at the Baghdad summit, Amir Abdollahian expressed hope that regional nations agree that regional peace is not possible in the absence of trust. He added that the new Iraq is in need of construction and improved regional relations.

The Baghdad summit kicked off earlier on Saturday with delegations from Iraq’s neighbors and some other countries in the region and beyond.

The Iranian delegation is chaired by Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. French President Emmanuel Macron, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim, King Abdullah II of Jordan, the ruler of Dubai, and the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Turkey are also in attendance.

Iraq says the meeting is aimed at defusing tension in West Asia, expanding relations among regional countries and resolving differences among Iraq’s neighbors.

The full text of the Iranian Foreign Minister’s speech:

In the Name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

I am very pleased to be present today at the conference in support of Iraq in Baghdad on behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran and esteemed President Dr. Raeisi. This meeting, with regional countries in attendance, confirms the efforts of the Republic of Iraq in creating areas for cooperation and interaction among the countries of the region, and I hope that, through these meetings, we can make a prosperous, developed and free region.

Dear participants

Today, Iraq is playing an important role in the region thanks to its constructive efforts and vision. The Islamic Republic of Iran was one of the first regional countries to recognize the new Iraq and to develop its political, economic and trade ties with Iraq by supporting the political processes in this country.

The new Iraq, liberated from terrorism, today needs internal reconstruction and strengthening, and the expansion of cooperation in the region. The Islamic Republic of Iran, while supporting the stability, security, independence, territorial integrity, dignity, authority and promotion of Iraq’s regional and international status, declares its readiness to develop bilateral and regional cooperation.

In recent years, trade between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Iraq has reached more than 12 billion dollars. The existence of eight official active border crossings between the two countries and the continuation of trade exchanges via these crossings, even despite the Coronavirus pandemic, indicate the economic entanglement of the two nations. In recent years, Iran has made a significant contribution to the development of Iraq’s economic and trade relations by exporting technical and engineering services, gas and electricity.

Dear attendees

The rise of Daesh was one of the most important dangers faced by the region and left irreparable damage. Unfortunately, Iraq has suffered a lot from the emergence of terrorist groups. Were it not for the will of the Iraqi people, the support of the honorable religious authority and the convergence of the Iraqi people from all walks of life, it would not have been clear what would happen to Iraq and other regional countries and how deeply the region and the world would be endangered by terrorist threats.

The Islamic Republic of Iran rushed to the aid of the friendly and brotherly country of Iraq in its fight against terrorism and did not withhold any assistance in this direction. The Iraqi people, parties, various groups and the Iraqi government have sacrificed thousands of lives for independence and the fight against terrorism.

However, the US government committed a heinous crime and martyred two fighters of the anti-Takfiri and counterterrorism front, Martyr Sardar Soleimani and Martyr Abu Mohandi Al-Mohandes. Not only did the US not bring peace and security to the people of this region, but it’s the main cause of insecurity, and this is clearly visible in many countries in the region.

Here, I would like to emphasize the role and support of regional nations in stabilizing and resorting security to Iraq including the friendly and brotherly country of the Syrian Arab Republic. I would like to express regret that Syria is not attending this summit.

Dear participants

The fate of the governments and nations of this region are intertwined according to common religious and cultural, traditional, historical and geographical interests. The Islamic Republic of Iran has always emphasized that peace is possible only through dialogue and negotiation within the region and hopes that regional nations will agree that security will only be achieved through mutual trust, reliance on national capabilities, strengthening relations and good neighborliness as well as through the non-intervention of extra-regional governments. This common belief can pave the way for many joint political, economic and cultural efforts in the region and guarantee the grounds for all-round growth and development of regional countries in the shadow of common and lasting security and by utilizing their God-given wealth.

Our region has all the religious, cultural and civilizational characteristics as well as material and spiritual capacities for regional cooperation and convergence, but unfortunately, due to foreign interventions and the dominance of security-oriented ideas, it has many problems, including war, instability and insecurity.

What we need today more than ever before is “sustainable regional security” with the participation of regional countries. Regional security will materialize depending on the use of economic resources to build a coalition for peace and development.

The Islamic Republic of Iran expresses its support for the Iraqi government and people and its internal decisions including the withdrawal of foreign troops and holding early elections, and it welcomes Iraq’s constructive role in promoting a culture of dialogue and regional cooperation. Iran considers cooperation within the region as the basis for establishing stability and peace in this way. The Islamic Republic of Iran, emphasizing the important role of other countries in the region, declares its readiness to advance these goals.

With great pleasure, I declare, at the inauguration of Iran’s new government, that our foreign policy, being “balanced, active and smart”, emphasizes the priority of relations with neighbors and other countries in the region, and we warmly shake hands with all neighboring and regional nations .

I once again thank the Iraqi government for hosting this summit, and I wish success and honor for the Iraqi people and government.

Iran FM: US must be held accountable for Soleimani assassination

General Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were assassinated in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020. Amir Abdollahian laid a wreath at the memorial site.

He spoke to reporters about the incident, saying the drone strike was a terrorist attack against General Soleimani whom he praised as a national and international hero of fighting terrorism.

He added that Iran will seriously pursue the matter through international legal channels and will bring those responsible for the crime to justice.

He said the US must be held accountable and Iran will not allow those who were behind the crime to get away with it.

Iran’s foreign minister is in the Iraqi capital to attend a regional summit there.

Raisi’s Unannounced Visit to Khuzestan under Media Spotlight

Jomhouri-e Eslami, a moderate newspaper, recommended Raisi report to people on the performance of his administration only when a job has been done.

Jomhouri-e Eslami, a supporter of former President Hassan Rouhani and his camp, urged the Raisi administration to replace the customary language used by governments, i.e., “should be done,” with “has been done,” wrote the paper in an editorial.

“Tell people whenever you have actually done something,”

“Ceremonial moves such as visiting the holy shrine of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Khomeini, posing for a photo with employees of the morgue of the Behesht-e-Zahra Organization (an institution charged with handling the burial procedure), and ministers’ going to their ministries in the middle of night … were just a show and they would work only if they swell the family purse, bring down prices and push down COVID-19 deaths to near zero,” the newspaper said.

“Otherwise, the 13th administration would be similar to the previous administrations, especially the ninth and tenth ones, which had focused on staging shows,” the newspaper added.

The newspaper said people are tired of simply hearing words but seeing no action.

Meanwhile, many Twitter messages suggested that residents of Ahvaz were pleased to see their president visiting their city despite the coronavirus outbreak.

The conservative Kayhan newspaper said Raisi’s trip raised hope among people at a time when citizens are waiting to see the new administration solve their economic problems.

Kayhan added Raisi talked to people face to face and got a firs-hand account of their problems and listened to their grievances.

IRNA also said the president confidently took his first step with that trip.

Raisi, who ran on a platform of administering justice and tackling corruption in the 13th presidential election, saw his proposed ministers receive votes of confidence from Parliament, and immediately started his work, wrote IRNA.

“He appeared among people without luxury car and created a wave of happiness among them,” the news agency added.

Meanwhile, an MP said such day-long trips will not solve any of the problems facing Khuzestan province.

Aftabnews website quoted Majid Naserinejad a principlist representative of Shadegan as saying
problems such as sewage issues, unemployment, drought the destruction of palm trees, etc., are problems which need constant attention and major decisions.

President Raisi made an unannounced trip to Khuzestan of Friday. The province has faced water shortage amid a widespread outbreak of covid-19.

Ayatollah Khamenei: US to blame for Afghan sufferings, carnages and recent blasts

Ayatollah Khamenei was speaking on Saturday in a meeting with President Ebrahim Raeisi and his cabinet members. 

The leader said the US occupied Afghanistan for twenty years and oppressed its people in different ways. Ayatollah Khamenei said the US is responsible for all the incidents happening in Afghanistan including Thursday’s bomb blasts and all other carnages there. 

Ayatollah Khamenei added that the Americans themselves also bombed wedding and mourning ceremonies, increased drug production ten-fold and imprisoned some people in the country. 

He noted that the US did not take a single step to construct Afghanistan, saying Afghanistan has not made any progress compared to the past, if it is not more underdeveloped than what it used to be.  

Ayatollah Khamenei reaffirmed Iran’s support for the people of Afghanistan, adding Afghans “have the same religion and language as ours”. 

The leader said governments come and go but people remain and Iran’s relations with any government depend on that government’s relationship with Iran. 

He expressed hope the situation will improve in Afghanistan.

The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution condemned the US as being shameless regarding the nuclear issue. He said the US withdrew from the nuclear deal before the eyes of the world and now they are speaking in such a way as if it was Iran that left the agreement.

The leader said Europeans were no better than the US in terms of hampering [the deal] and bad behavior. Ayatollah Khamenei also noted that the current US administration is no different than the previous one. He reiterated the US officials are “wild and predator wolves” when it comes to diplomacy, saying no one should be deceived by their smiles.

Ayatollah Khamenei also urged the new Iranian administration not to tie economic problems to sanctions and make plans to resolve the problems.

He said Iran must expand trade with 15 neighbors and many other countries of the world except a couple of them.

He stressed that diplomacy must not be tied to the nuclear issue either because the nuclear case is different and must be resolved appropriately.

Iran’s leader then turned to the Coronavirus pandemic, describing it as an urgent issue that must be addressed because it affects people’s health. While praising efforts by the previous administration to fight Covid including vaccine imports, Ayatollah Khamenei said treatment, prevention, screening and public vaccination as highly important.

Mortazavi, who suffers from Down’s syndrome, had said in a video going viral on social media that he wished to become the manager of Esteqlal one day and have Farhand Majidi, the current Esteqlal manager, as his assistant.

In a nice move, and in coordination with Esteqlal’s Assisant Manger Farzad Majidi, Mortazavi attended a training session of the team.

First, he talked to the players for a few minutes, and later monitored the training session like a real manager.

Persepolis and Esteqlal, two long-running Iranian football clubs, have millions of avid fans both across the country and among Iranian expatriates around the world.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic reared its ugly head, the 100,000-capacity Azadi Stadium in Tehran would become filled with spectators, who would throng the venue to watch the capital’s Derby held regularly between the two powerhouses.

There was such a huge crowd that many enthusiasts would not be allowed into the filled-to-capacity stadium and would be deprived of being present at the event.

Esteqlal have, so far, become champions for two times at the Asian club competitions.

Tehran to EU: Nuclear talks must meet Iranians’ rights

The foreign minister also said the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran treats the law approved by the country’s parliament regarding the nuclear issue as binding.

The law obliged the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization to increase its nuclear activities including uranium enrichment at 20 percent purity. Under the law, the government is also bound to suspend the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

In a telephone conversation, Amir Abdollahian also told Borel that any negotiations over the nuclear deal known as the JCPOA must enable the verification of any side’s actions by other parties.

After congratulating Amir Abdollahian on his appointment as Iran’s foreign minister, the top EU diplomat said the bloc was hopeful a date would be set as soon as possible for resuming the Vienna talks following the formation of the new administration in Iran. The nuclear negotiations continued for months between Iran and other sides under former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to revive the JCPOA.

After the US withdrawal from the agreement under former president Donald Trump in 2018 and his reinstatement of sanctions on Tehran, Iran reduced its nuclear commitments in retaliation. It now says it will return to full compliance only after the US removes all the sanctions in one go and return to the JCPOA.
Iran also says the European signatories to the nuclear agreement have failed to stick by their side of the JCPOA under pressure from Washington.

Kabul blasts death toll rises to 170

The explosions happened at the gates of the Kabul International Airport where thousands of people had gathered to take evacuation flights following the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban.

Reports say 132 bodies have yet to be identified.

At least, 13 US troops were also killed and a number of others injured. Over 200 people were also wounded in the bombings.

Immediately after the explosions that happened successively, the Daesh terror group claimed the attacks.

The Taliban who are in control of Afghanistan have condemned the blasts as terrorist attacks.

Meanwhile US president Joe Biden has vowed to exact a heavy price from those behind the explosions.

China says ready to expand strategic ties with Iran

China’s State Councilor and Top diplomat Wang Yi has sent a message to Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian to congratulate him on his appointment to the post.

In his message, Wang Yi highlighted the age-old and traditional friendship between Iran and China and referred to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties.

He said Tehran and Beijing have maintained and deepened their relations based on a strategic partnership.

Wang Yi also referred to the recent telephone conversation between the presidents of Iran and China and their agreement to promote ties, saying he’s ready for joint efforts with the Iranian foreign minister toward coordination, cooperation and further expansion of the strategic ties between Tehran and Beijing.

Iran and China have recently signed a 25-year-old Cooperation Program that reportedly covers various areas including military and energy sectors.

3 Afghan Airliners Land in Iran to Avoid Violence; No Passengers Aboard

“Three airplanes operated by the Afghan airline Kam Air have landed in Mashhad due to the current crisis in this country,” said the Public Relations Office of Shahid Hasheminejad International Airport on Thursday.

“Given the flare-up of violence in Kabul, the Kam Air airline today requested three of its aircraft with no passengers on board to land in Iran,” said the office, adding, “They touched down at Mashhad airport today.”

The airline has requested that the three aircraft remain grounded at the airport for a few days, said the Public Relations Office.

“One of the planes came in from Kabul and the other two from Dubai,” it noted.

On Thursday, scores of Afghan civilians and at least 13 members of the US military were killed and many more injured in Kabul suicide bombing attacks claimed by the Daesh terrorist group.

Two explosions also hit Kabul International Airport.
