US voices concern over Iran rocket launch

On Thursday, Iran announced it has successfully launched a domestically-built satellite carrier rocket, named Simorgh (Phoenix), sending three research devices into space.

The State Department spokesperson told The Hill Iran’s space program, which Tehran describes as for civilian purposes, violates a resolution in the United Nations Security Council that calls upon Tehran not to undertake activity related to ballistic missiles “designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”

“The United States continues to use all its nonproliferation tools to prevent the further advancement of Iran’s missile programs and urges other countries to take steps to address Iran’s missile development activity,” the spokesperson continued.

The United States had expressed concern that Iran’s satellite launches are part of an effort by Tehran to develop ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

Iran, which has long maintained its nuclear program is entirely civilian in nature, stressed its satellite launches and rocket tests do not have a military component. Tehran denies Washington assertions that such activity is a cover for ballistic missile development and states it has never pursued the development of nuclear weapons.

Tehran has repeatedly stressed Iranian missiles have nothing to do with United Nation Security Council 2231.

To Commander: Iran pursuing harsh revenge against killers of General Soleimani

General Ali Fadavi said various methods are being followed for this purpose to satisfy the people of Iran. Fadavi made those remarks at the burial place of General Soleimani in the Iranian city of Kerman.

Iran has said it is going after those who murdered General Soleimani through legal channels as well.

The top military commander was killed in a drone strike directly ordered by former US president Donald Trump. General Soleimani was at the forefront of fighting the Daesh terror group in Iraq and Syria.

Following the assassination, Iran launched a salvo of ballistic missiles at a base in northern Iraq that hosted US forces, injuring dozens of American troops and causing huge material damage to the base.

The majority of Iranians hailed the missile attack as a legitimate act, saying they were behind any move to exact revenge on those responsible for General Soleimani’s assassination.

“Russia, China do not meddle with Iran’s stance in Vienna talks”

Mikhail Ulyanov said, “I do not like this language.” Ulyanov added, “We interact, we listen to each other, and we correct our positions based on the arguments we hear”. He said the talks between us and Iran are no more than recommendations, adding, “If the Iranian side heeds to our proposals, we will be grateful.”

On the verification of sanctions removal in the Vienna talks, Ulyanov said Iran’s pursuit of this issue is understandable. He however noted that he could not disclose the content of the current talks, saying the negotiations are a process and the atmosphere is positive and progressing.

Ulyanov added that all participants in the talks agree on this issue. Russia’s chief negotiator said, “We must be patient and be determined in our efforts. Eventually, we can overcome all problems”.

Ulyanov stressed that it’s possible to reach an agreement on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, also known as JCPOA, and that reaching this stage by February 2022 is a realistic assessment.

Meanwhile Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has denied claims that Iran is hampering the Vienna talks.

Zakharova said there are no signs corroborating this allegation.

She maintained that the Vienna negotiations are underway and the parties involved are working to reach an agreement on the final document.

She criticized the US government’s measures against the JCPOA, saying “it is always more difficult to revive than to destroy.”

Zakharova also slammed the US policy of maximum pressure against the Islamic Republic of Iran. She said, “We know what the consequences of US policy of maximum pressure were and what the consequences of US sanctions were.”

She said Russia is ready to help revive the JCPOA and advance the Vienna talks. Zakharova underlined that the nuclear deal has no alternative as the agreement helps strengthen stability in the Middle East.

Dey 9 Epic: Iran marks anniversary of 2009 pro-establishment rallies

Iranians have marked the anniversary of pro-establishment rallies that were held on December 30, 2009 and helped put an end to post-election unrest that year.

People attended rallies in many cities including the capital Tehran on Thursday, marking the occasion which is known as the “Dey 9 Epic”.

In the Iranian capital Tehran, a gathering was held at Imam Hossein Square with many people from all walks of life in attendance, with health protocols for Covid-19 in place.

The Leader of Islamic Revolution’s representative to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said during the ceremony that the Iranian nation is today capable of distinguishing right from wrong and recognizing danger and sedition.

“Our nation has been detecting all the seditions of the enemy in the same way for 42 years”, Hojjatoleslam Abdollah Haji Sadeghi stated.

He said the United States and other arrogant powers must know that the days when they thought they could use deceived elements inside Iran against the establishment and the Islamic revolution are gone.

He said the enemy seeks to disappoint Iranian people about the future, but it must know that people will not back down in the face of pressure and threats and will remain on the scene with their vigilance and insight.

On December 30, 2009, millions of Iranian people marched in the streets of Tehran and several other major cities to denounce the unrest, which broke out following the 2009 presidential poll.

The pro-establishment demonstrators also vented their anger at a group of protesters who days earlier offended the sanctities on the Day of Ashura, which marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam.

Iran Meteorological Organization warns of continuing air pollution

Air Pollution in Tehran

The Meteorological Organization issued a yellow alarm and urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.

It added that from Friday to Saturday, in the event of failure to control fixed and mobile pollutant sources, pollution will increase to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups and in high-traffic and industrial areas, it’s likely that air pollution will increase to unhealthy levels for all groups.

In these weather conditions, the Meteorological Organization recommends citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in cities, especially for the elderly, children and people with a history of disease. People should eschew physical and sports activities outdoors and manage fossil fuel consumption and industrial units should also decrease the time of operation of polluted areas.

A yellow alert means that an atmospheric phenomenon will occur that may interfere with travel and daily activities. This alert is issued to raise public awareness so people can be prepared to deal with the atmospheric phenomenon that is slightly more severe than usual.

Iranian health officials say air pollution is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths each year in Iranian cities. Each winter, Iran’s capital Tehran suffers some of the worst pollutions in the world through thermal inversion. This is a phenomenon that traps hazardous air over the city.

IRGC cmdr.: Iran getting more powerful by the day

Arms Embargo Won’t Affect Iran’s Defence Power: Top General

General Hossein Salami was speaking at a ceremony held in the holy city of Qom on Thursday to mark the second anniversary of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani’s assassination by the US.

Salami referred to the depth of Iran’s influence across the region, saying today, the axis of resistance is in pursuit of enemies in all Islamic territories and has prevented them from reaching their goals.

Salami noted that if this power had not been born, the adversaries would have infiltrated all Islamic lands.

The commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said the nation’s foes aimed to cause division between the Islamic establishment and people but that conspiracy was foiled thanks to people’s vigilance and prudence.

Salami also spoke of the need to resist all sanctions and military threats. He said the Islamic Republic will resolve all problems of the nation by relying on domestic potentials and the people’s will.

Russia: Iran not stalling nuclear talks

MOSCOW, RUSSIA - DECEMBER 9, 2021: Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova during a press briefing on Russia's current foreign policy. “We don’t see any reasons to assert that the Iranian side is stalling this process,” she noted.

“Actually, this is not in its (Iran’s) interests either as Tehran has repeatedly stated because, while the JCPOA is stuck, illegitimate American sanctions continue to be in effect,” the diplomat explained.

According to the spokeswoman, Washington “has already regretted several times the fatal decision by the previous administration to end the nuclear deal with Iran” when the US unilaterally “simply ran away” from the JCPOA breaching the methods and ways of withdrawing from an agreement that US diplomats themselves developed.

“It is always more difficult to restore than to destroy,” the diplomat continued.

“Washington has to tangibly support its numerous promises to return to the JCPOA with practical action. It is obvious that the position of an offender of the UN Security Council resolution creates more and more discomfort for the Americans. On our part, we are doing everything necessary in order to help rectify the situation and we hope that intensive negotiating efforts at the Vienna venue will continue despite the counteraction of the opponents of the nuclear deal,” Zakharova added.

“We proceed from the premise that there is no alternative to the JCPOA,” the diplomat stressed.

“We are confident that its full implementation will have a favorable impact on the political climate in the Middle East and in the Persian Gulf region and, of course, will facilitate a decrease in tensions and the strengthening of trust in the region as well as make it possible to remove those acute issues in the humanitarian sphere that emerged in relation to such an illegitimate turn of events related to the US withdrawal from the deal,” she asserted.

“There is a clear understanding that the path to the stated objective lies through the American side amending all the committed violations and Tehran’s reciprocal steps on unfreezing the previously suspended voluntary obligations on limiting its nuclear activity,” she concluded.

Blinken discusses Iran, Russia with E3 top diplomats

Antony Blinken

“Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke today with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, and UK Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss,” Price stated.

“They discussed the importance of continued coordination to deter any further Russian aggression against Ukraine and affirmed the consensus among Allies and partners to impose massive consequences and severe costs on Russia for such actions. They reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” he continued.

“The Secretary and his counterparts also discussed their shared concerns about the pace of developments in Iran’s nuclear program as time runs short for Tehran to return to the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action),” Price added.

Iranian officials have rejected western diplomats’ remarks about a deadline for reaching an agreement in Vienna talks, and stressed Tehran is only after a good agreement.

On Tuesday, Tehran gave upbeat view about talks that kicked off this week to salvage the nuclear deal with global powers, although western nations have claimed the negotiations are going too slowly.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has voiced optimism about the ongoing talks with the P4+1 group in Vienna, saying the negotiations are “on a good path”. He added Tehran believes that if the other sides continue talks in good faith and with seriousness, a win-win deal is possible in the near future.

On Wednesday, top Iranian nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani said if the parties to the Vienna talks reach an agreement, the US must first lift anti-Iran sanctions and then Tehran, after verifying the sanctions removal, will conduct its nuclear activities in accordance with the nuclear deal, JCPOA.

Bagheri Kani made the comment after bilateral and multi-lateral meetings with the heads of the negotiating teams of the European troika and the EU’s Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora in Vienna.

Bagheri Kani also added talks are going on well.

Former Qatar PM warns against anti-Iran sabotage

“A future agreement between Iran and the Western countries on the country’s nuclear activities will be a key opportunity to reduce tensions in the region, especially as, any acts of mischief and sabotage against Tehran will directly affect regional countries and does not serve our interests in the short and long terms,” he said on twitter.

The warning by Sheikh Hamad comes as the eighth round of the Vienna talks to remove anti-Iran sanctions and revive the 2015 nuclear deal resumed on December 27.

Over the past years, Israeli officials have openly expressed discontent about the talks and a possible agreement with Iran and have even talked about preparation for military action against Iranian targets. Tehran has warned that its response to any such move will be crushing.

New Iraqi parliament to convene early next year

Lawmakers will elect a parliamentary speaker and two deputies in their first session. They will later elect a new president who will task the leader of the largest bloc to form a government as prime minister.

The main winner of the October 10 election was Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Sadr’s bloc, already the biggest in the 329-seat parliament, will expand to 73 seats from 54. Its main rivals for years, the Fatah bloc, meanwhile, saw its parliamentary representation collapse to just 17 seats from 48.

Fatah bloc political leaders held a meeting with cleric Sadr at his home in the southern holy city of Najaf on Wednesday to discuss the formation of the government, but no clear results have been announced after the meeting, stated two Shi’ite officials who attended.

“Atmospheres were positive and we think we need to hold more meetings to reach common ground,” noted one Shi’ite official.

Because no coalition won a majority, Shi’ite, Sunni and Kurdish coalitions have been jockeying for position in the new government.
