WHO official hails Iran’s success in controlling Covid

WHO

Ahmed al-Manzari, Director of WHO for the East Mediterranean region, also praised Iran for handling the crisis while under US sanctions.

Manzari was speaking during an online webinar attended by Tehran-based representatives of international organizations and foreign ambassadors.

He said climate change across the world have brought about a 23 percent rise in diseases.

He cited Covid as an example, saying the root-cause of such diseases must be first identified and then efforts must be made to eradicate them.

The director of WHO for the East Mediterranean region noted that the abating of the Covid pandemic has provided a good opportunity for human beings to have healthier societies.

Covid has killed millions worldwide. The death toll in Iran is nearly 150 thousand, which is way lower than the number of fatalities from the virus in most world countries.

Iran says it is now self-sufficient in the production of Coronavirus vaccine and that it’s now experiencing a downward trend in the number of deaths and infections from the disease.

Iran has attributed the downward trend to a nationwide vaccination campaign that has seen some 150 million doses of vaccine given to people in the country including both Iranians and foreigners. Some 27 million people have received three shots of the jab.

Ayatollah Khamenei: A new world order emerging with US weakening daily

Iran’s leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

Ayatollah Khamenei said this year’s Quds Day is different from the previous years. He said Palestinian youths are now making great sacrifices and the Zionist regime is resorting to any crime with the support of the US and Europeans.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the Palestinian people are powerful, albeit oppressed, as they do not allow the Palestinian issue to slip into oblivion.

The leader added that the Quds Day is a good opportunity to show solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people.

Ayatollah Khamenei strongly criticized the actions of some Islamic countries regarding the Palestinian issue, saying, “Unfortunately, some of the Islamic states acquitted themselves very badly and are not even prepared to talk about the issue of Palestine, and they think they can help Palestine through establishing ties with the Zionists, while this is a grave mistake.”

He said Egypt’s normalization with Israel did not result in a decrease in crimes by Zionists against Palestinians and their desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque in the past 40 years.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that today, the world is on the verge of the formation of a new international order, which has emerged after the bipolar and unipolar orders.

The leader said in this age, the US has been weakening by the day. Referring to the ongoing war in Ukraine, he added that the Ukraine war must be viewed in light of the emergence of the new world order, which will be followed by some difficult convolutions.

Ayatollah Khamenei underlined that under the current circumstances which are so complex, all countries, most notably, the Islamic Republic of Iran, have a duty to have a soft and hard presence in the new world order in order to preserve their national interests and security and avert getting marginalized.

Three Chinese killed in Pakistan’s Karachi blast

Pakistan Blast

The three were among passengers on a minibus travelling near the university when the bomb exploded, killing the Chinese and a fourth person, a Pakistani, police said.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) separatist group claimed responsibility for the blast, adding in an email sent to Reuters that it had been carried out by a woman suicide bomber.

The blast was the first major attack in an urban area of Pakistan since Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took power this month.

He condemned what he called a cowardly act of terrorism.

“I am deeply grieved on the loss of precious lives including of our Chinese friends in the heinous attack in Karachi today,” Sharif announced in a statement.

A university spokesman told Reuters the dead included the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute, a Chinese language and cultural centre, and other faculty members of the institute. Pakistan’s foreign office also condemned the attack.

“The cowardly incident is a direct attack on the Pakistan-China friendship and ongoing cooperation,” Pakistan’s foreign office statement said.

“Pakistan attaches great importance to safety and security of Chinese nationals, projects and institutions in Pakistan,” it added.

The blast was the first major attack against Chinese nationals in Pakistan since last year when a suicide bomber blew up a passenger bus in northern Pakistan that killed 13 people, including nine Chinese.

Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi told reporters the blast killed three foreigners and a local.

“The reports we have got is that they’re Chinese,” he said in comments telecast live from the scene of crime. He added the three Chinese were teachers at Karachi University.

Nabi stated a local guard and another chinese who were in the van are wounded critically The BLA attacked two army bases in southwestern Balochistan province earlier this year, killing seven soldiers, and it lost 13 of the attackers in an hours long gun-battle with Pakistan army.

Baloch separatist guerrillas, who say they are fighting for a greater share in regional resources of mines and minerals, usually attack gas projects, infrastructure and the security forces.

They also attack Chinese projects, and occasionally kill Chinese workers despite Pakistani assurances that it is doing everything it can to protect the projects.

Israeli PM family receives death threat letter with bullet

Naftali Bennett

The police issued a statement saying that a letter containing a death threat and a live bullet was sent to Bennett’s family. The police added the special crimes department and the Shin Bet internal security agency opened an investigation.

Additional details about the case were under a gag order.

Bennett’s office announced in a statement that the prime minister’s family has been given an increased security detail because of the letter.

Bennett formed a government last year following four successive deadlocked elections.

He heads a coalition of eight parties ranging from ultranationalists to a small Islamist party that were all united in their opposition to longtime prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Bennett and other leaders of the coalition received death threats and were provided with additional security in the run-up to the formation of the new government last June.

One of Bennett’s predecessors as prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, was assassinated in 1995 by a religious nationalist extremist following a peace rally in Tel Aviv.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari said during his one-day trip to Baku that the most important part of his visit is pursuing joint projects in the liberated areas of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

“Today, during a meeting with the deputy prime minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, several projects were discussed, the most important of which was the presence of Iranian companies in the construction of roads, dams, power plants, schools, and hospitals in the liberated areas,” he explained.

Safari also said one of the most important bilateral projects, which also has international significance, is building roads between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Iranian territory.

He referred to the construction of a road bridge on the Astarachay River on the border between Iran and Azerbaijan, saying the construction of the new and strategic bridge is important for the two countries because when it is completed, it will facilitate transportation and increase the number of trucks that cross the border.

Iraq military says dismantled Daesh cell, killing dozens

Iraqi Forces

Brigadier General Yahya Rasul said Iraq’s counterterrorism apparatus totally destroyed the cell during a special and unique operation south of the city of Mosul, in northern Iraq.

The general said 43 Daesh terrorist got killed and their weaponry seized by the Iraqi forces. Rasul added that Iraqi assault helicopters participated in the operation as well.

He noted that the remaining pockets of Daesh are in desert areas of Iraq where weather conditions are tough.

Rasul also said the Iraqi forces will continue going after the terrorist cells of Daesh in all areas including in the mountainous regions and valleys.

His comments come as an Iraqi judicial official said deputy governor of Daesh south of Baghdad Abul Hassan Gharibawi has been sentenced to death by hanging.

The terrorist was arrested by Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi.

Last week, Iraqi forces also launched a massive operation in the western province of al-Anbar to dislodge the remnants of the Daesh terrorist group from the region.

Vahidi: Still no visa-free entry for land travelers between Iran, Iraq

Iranian pilgrims travel to Iraq t

“Travel across the land border is not possible without a visa, and pilgrims must have a visa. Of course, our friends are trying and consulting with the Iraqi side so that people can travel to Iraq through the land borders without a visa,” Vahidi told reporters on Tuesday.

The Iranian interior minister noted that air travelers between Iran and Iraq are not required to obtain a visa.

Iraq is a major source of tourists visiting Iran. And a very large number of Iranian pilgrims head for the holy Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala each year.

But coronavirus restrictions have drastically reduced the number of Iranians and Iraqis visiting the two countries.

Iranian and Iraqi officials have been negotiating to waive visas for all forms of travel for their nationals.
