Iran Covid deaths stand at 3

COVID in Iran

The downward trend in Covid deaths and infections has been holding for the more than past two weeks.

Officials attribute this to people’s sticking to health protocols and a nationwide vaccination drive that has seen the inoculation over more than 80 percent of the entire population.

Overall, some 150 million doses of Covid vaccine have been administered. Over 27 million people have received their third shot. And a small number of them have got their fourth.

Authorities are urging Iranians to get their booster shots, third or fourth, as this will prevent a resurgence of Covid.

The virus has so far killed 141,296 people in Iran.

Iranian urges UN involvement, regional fund to tackle dust storms,

Air pollution

In the wake of an escalation of dust storms in the region and following Iranian President’s order for the case to be swiftly pursued, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian sent letters to his counterparts in the regional countries from where the dust storms originate and those states affected by the environmental crisis caused by the phenomenon.

“While standing ready for bilateral technical cooperation toward containing the dust particles, the Islamic Republic of Iran calls for the signing of a relevant regional convention, with the participation of the United Nations and its specialized agencies, particularly the United Nations Environment Program and the World Health Organization,” he reiterated.

Amir Abdollahian said, “This environmental phenomenon knows no borders and is linked to the health of all regional people; therefore, all governments of the region are required to seriously and effectively take part in the fight against dust storms, regardless of political issues.”

“It is necessary to form a fund as part of the convention for collecting regional and international aid and fight the phenomenon of dust particles and desertification more quickly and in a more coordinated manner,” he added.

The Iranian foreign minister had earlier held phone conversations with his opposite numbers in Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Kuwait in this regard.

He asked the Iraqi foreign minister to draw the attention of Saudi Arabia, as a source country that is also suffering from the crisis, to the Iranian initiative.

Iran FM: New initiative tabled over nuclear deal, US decision needed

Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdolahian Davos

Amir Abdollahian, who was speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland’s Davos, said the proposals were tabled recently and followed other ones Iran had earlier presented to the negotiating parties in the talks.

The top Iranian diplomat expressed hope that the American side respond to Iran’s initiative with pragmatism.

“With the return of all sides to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, we should [be able to] reap the economic benefits of the deal. All elements of [former US President Donald] Trump’s maximum pressure must be removed. A return to the JCPOA is not possible with Iran being deprived of its economic benefits and elements of Trump’s maximum pressure campaign in place,” he said.

Window of diplomacy remains open

Amir Abdollahian added that US President Joe Biden should make his decision, noting that Iran is committed to reaching a good and lasting agreement.
He stressed that Iran has “kept the window of diplomacy open” and an agreement will be hopefully at hand if the US adopts a pragmatic approach.

Amir Abdollahian, however, noted that the US is yet to show a reassuring stance on the economic guarantees Iran has required.

Iran has other options on table

Amir Abdollahian added that Americans know what they should do to return to the JCPOA.

“The most important issue is that economic sanctions against Iran should be effectively removed. Downplaying this key issue and focusing on another issue is not the correct behavior and response,” he said.

“If the Zionist lobby keeps away from the US interests, Biden can easily take action to reach a good and lasting agreement. If this does not happen, We, Iran, who tolerated 40 years of pressure, will definitely have different options on the table.”

War no solution to Ukraine crisis, US and NATO provoked Russia

The foreign minister also talked about the Ukraine crisis blaming “provocative actions of the US and NATO” for the war in the country.

“We strongly condemned the military attack against Ukraine. We consider the war against Ukraine wrong, just as is the case in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen and Palestine,” he said.

He said, however, that the US and NATO provoked Russia with their attempts to expand military presence in the region.

“Is war the way forward to counter the provocation by the US and NATO? We support talks and political dialog. Last week I told [Russian Foreign Minister Sergei] Lavrov that we are ready to host both sides in Iran,” he said.

Progress made during Iran-Saudi Talks

The foreign minister said Iran has agreed with Saudi Arabia to hold a meeting at the level of foreign ministers or officials of the foreign ministry in a third country, or any other venue of choice.

That, the top diplomat said, was among “the little but good” progress made during the latest round of talks with Saudi Arabia.

“We have kept the door open for Riyadh to use it to normalize ties when it is willing to do,” he said.

Yemen truce should be extended

Amir Abdollahian also said the future of Yemen should not be limited to a certain group or factions.

“Ansarullah and its allies in Yemen managed to resist the war. The truce should continue and the blockade on Yemen should be ended and all Yemeni sides should sit at the negotiating table and decide for their country,” he said.

“Value of Iran Exports to Oman can be doubled in years”

Iran Trade

The level of relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Sultanate of Oman

Iran exported about $720 million worth of commodities to Oman and imported about $620 million from the Sultanate.

In total, the value of bilateral trade between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Oman was about $1.4 billion, but given the fact that the two neighboring countries cooperate in other fields such as tourism and joint investment, and part of the trade with Oman is carried out through other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, the real value of trade between the two countries exceeds $1.4 billion.

Expected Level of Trade between Iran and Oman

Forecasts show that the value of exports from the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Kingdom of Oman can be at least doubled and at most increased five-fold within a 5-year process. It is estimated that Iran can raise the value of direct and indirect imports from Oman to $1 billion in 5 years.

Weak points

Unfamiliarity of Iranian exporters with the details and conditions of the consumer markets in Oman are deemed as the main drawback for the expansion of trade ties between Iran and Oman. Also, lack of quality as well as hygiene and packaging standards, discontinued supply of consumer market needs, weakness in marketing, market research, professional negotiation, signing contracts are among the weak points hampering Iranian businessmen’s trade with their Omani counterparts. Another major setback is the absence of the Iranian producers and exporters from Oman market which technically impede their entrance and investment and ultimately prevents market share retention.

The lack of a proper shipping fleet to transport goods to Oman ports is one of the other setbacks facing Iranian exporters. This includes not having enough refrigerated containers to carry agricultural products and perishable food.

Threats

The presence of strong competitors in the Oman market and the lack of proper banking relations between Iran and Oman, the lack of a direct shipping line between the two countries and the impossibility of the presence of Iranian ships and anchoring in Oman ports are considered as the factors threatening expansion of bilateral trade between Iran and Oman.

Strengths and opportunities in the Sultanate of Oman

Here are some of the strong points Iranian businessmen can enjoy in Oman:

Very good political relationship between Iran and Oman, close ties between the Iranian and Omani economic and trade institutions, close geographical distance and low shipping costs compared to other markets, strong cultural and religious bonds and linguistic commonalities.

Also provision or creation of bilateral trade infrastructure, operating direct flights enabling Iranian and Omani businessmen to commute regularly, abolishing visa requirements and issuing visa on arrival at the airport can further facilitate bilateral trade between Iran and Oman. Cordial relations between Iranian and Omani businessmen, simple and proper laws for living and establishing a business in Oman are also among the other benefits for the Iranian businessmen.

On the one hand, the high value of the Omani national currency against the Iranian currency can offer an opportunity for the Iranian exporters. The existence of a joint chamber of commerce (Iran-Oman Chamber of Commerce) seen as one of the most active joint trade entities in the region and the presence of Iranian and Omani trade advisers in the target countries along with active embassies interested in developing economic and trade relations between the two countries can also be considered as advantages for the Iranian exporters.

Similar consumer culture, consumption behaviors and taste, familiarity with Iranian goods, the issue of halal food produced in Iran as well as the appropriate laws of Oman supporting businesses are also among the advantages the Iranian exporters and businessmen have at their disposal.

Report: Israel told US officials it killed IRGC member

IRGC Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei

A spokeswoman for the Israeli prime minister had declined to comment on the assassination of Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, but the paper cited a regime intelligence official, briefed on the communications, that Israel has informed American officials it was behind the killing.

The intelligence official, who reportedly spoke on condition of anonymity, also said the Israelis told the Americans the assassination was meant as a warning to Iran to halt the operations of what the regime alleged was a covert IRGC hit squad, active outside Iran.

Iran, however, said after the assassination that Khodaei had formerly fought Daesh and other terrorists in Syria and was a veteran of the 1980’s Iran-Iraq war.

Reports also say, that’s amid an ongoing defamation war against Iran, which Israel is using to undermine the talks for an agreement to revive the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

Against that backdrop and similarities with previous assassinations by Israel in Iran, Iranian officials were quick to blame the regime and vowed a strong response.

“We will make the enemy regret this and none of the enemy’s evil actions will go unanswered,” IRGC’s Commander in Chief Major General Hossein Salami said at Khodaei’s funeral.

Iranian officials have in the past blamed Israel for a series of assassinations, including the killing of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh near the capital Tehran as well as three other nuclear scientists who were targeted by hit squads and bombs, just before the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Locals mourn victims of tragic building collapse in Iran’s Abadan

Iran building collapse

On Wednesday, which was declared a day of mourning in Khuzestan Province in southern Iran, groups of teary-eyed people gathered in the streets near the site of the 10-story Metropol commercial building to mourn the victims.

Several mourners chanted slogans against Hossein Abdolbaghi, the builder and owner of Metropol.

They rejected official reports that he had been among the victims.

In the wake of the tragedy, Iranian official have made multiple arrests.

Abdolbaghi was initially announced to have been among the detainees, but judicial officials later reported that he had been killed on the spot.

The conflicting reports have led to speculation that he might be alive and allowed to escape.

The unfinished Metropol building, located on Abadan’s busiest street, collapsed on Monday, leaving dozens trapped in the ruins.

A rescue operation is underway to find possible survivors or dead bodies.
Khuzestan’s Deputy Governor Ehsan Abbas Pour told reporters on Thursday that the death toll has reached 18, with two more bodies retrieved.

He said 37 people had also been found alive and sent to hospital for treatment.

Nasrallah: 2000 war ended myth of Israel’s invincibility

Hezbollah Leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah

Nasrallah said this was a historical victory that “shattered Zionists’ superiority and ended the myth of their invincibility”.

“The victory of the year 2000 destroyed Zionsits’ major project and raised Palestinians’ hope for the liberation of their homeland,” he said.

Nasrallah added that after Israel withdrew from Lebanese territories, it began to plot to foment civil war in Lebanon, but this project was also undermined by the resistance.

“The Zionist regime became weak and weaker after the victory of the year 2000. Even [former Israeli prime minister] Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged this fact,” he said.

Nasrallah further stressed that Hezbollah resistance movement has been the only such group in the world that never went for taking over the government after its victory.

“We never wanted to rule because, basically, we did not fight to take over power. We only fought for the liberation of our lands and protection of our nation’s honor and dignity. Even when we entered the government, the aim was to support the resistance,” he said.

The Hezbollah secretary general also talked about the recent wave of Israeli atrocities and the violations against al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, al-Quds.

He warned that any act of aggression against the holy site will “blow up the region”.

Iran writes to Guterres, urges UN to condemn murder of IRGC member

IRGC Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei

In the letter to Guterres, Majid Takht-e Ravanchi, Iran’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations, said the murder of Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, who played an active role in fighting terrorism in the region, was in line with the “systematic” assassinations of innocent Iranian citizens and scientists.

Khodaei was assassinated by two motorcyclists who shot him five times near his home in eastern Tehran before fleeing the scene on Sunday.

Such assassinations, Takht-e Ravanchi added, had been planned and carried by certain regimes as a tool to advance their illegitimate foreign policy agenda.

Committing such crimes are against the UN Charter, international law, and basic human rights principles, and pose a serious threat to regional and global peace and stability, said the diplomat, warning that the terrorists will be responsible for the repercussions.

Takht-e Ravanci said an intensive investigation is going on into the case, adding that the UN should condemn the crime in line with its responsibility to truly fight terrorism, without any discrimination.

The international community, he said, needs to be gravely concerned over the dangerous consequences of such terrorist actions and fulfill its duty of severely condemning atrocious assassinations targeting citizens of other countries by certain “known state terrorists.”
