Iran and Saudi Flags

Hossein Salahvarzi added that Iran can also provide for the needs of pilgrims during Hajj and Omrah (minor Hajj) ceremonies in Saudi Arabia.

He added that a working group has been formed at the Iranian Chamber of Commerce to expand ties with the Saudis.

Salahvarzi stressed that Iran is ready to set up a joint chamber with Saudi Arabia in cooperation with Iran’s consulate general and embassy in Jeddah and Riyadh.

Iran’s Consul General Hassan Zarnegar for his part underlined the need for coordination between the chambers of commerce of both sides and their private sectors as well.

Iran and Saudi Arabia normalized their relations months ago after nearly seven years.

Iranian FM urges UN to send relief to Gaza

Hossein Amirabdollahian

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, exchanged views with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres over the developments in Palestine.

Amirabdollahian said what happened in the occupied Palestinian territories was a completely Palestinian initiative and a reaction to the war crimes and extremist moves by Israel in recent months.

He was referring to the Saturday surprise attack by the Palestinian movement, Hamas, on Israel.

He warned that Gaza is currently under a complete siege, and water and electricity as well as the delivery of medicine and food to Gazans have been cut off, and attacks and war crimes by the Zionist regime against the people of Gaza rage on.

Amirabdollahian stressed that due to the high number of women and children killed in Gaza, the Zionist regime is responsible for its consequences and the increased complication of the situation.

The top Iranian diplomat declared Iran’s readiness to send humanitarian aid to Gaza.

For his part, UN Chief Antonio Guterres said, “Perhaps no one is more upset than us about what is unfolding in Gaza because hundreds of UN employees are in very dire conditions in the city and so far some of them have been killed. And under such circumstances they are trying to take care of the people of Gaza.”

“We are aware of the deterioration of the situation in Gaza and we are making efforts to prevent an escalation of bombings and fighting through consultations with other countries because anytime soon it is feared that the escalation of the situation will cause a catastrophe in Gaza”, said Guterres.

The UN chief went on to say, “We have always opposed the hardline positions of the Israeli officials, and we believe that through the recognition of the right to self-determination and the formation of an independent Palestinian state, we hope to end these problems.”

Guterres voiced concern that because the power plants in Gaza are out of fuel, the risk of a disaster there is more than likely now.

Nigeria’s prominent Shia cleric arrives in Iran

Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife, Malama Zeenah Ibrahim, arrived at Imam Khomeini International Airport in the capital Tehran on Wednesday and were warmly received by the Iranian people as well as their supporters and followers upon arrival.

The participants, in their hundreds, held placards and waved Iranian national flags as well as portraits of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and late anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani in support of the prominent Nigerian Muslim cleric.

“I am very happy that such a crowd supports the resistance today, and I have nothing to say but to thank you dear ones,” Sheikh Zakzaky said in an address at the airport.

Pointing to the divine promise of the victory of truth over falsehood, he stated, “We are all under a great test, and it is hoped that the Islamic Revolution will bring about change in the whole world, including in the US and Europe, to set the ground for the emergence of the last Shia Imam, Imam Mahdi (PBUH).”

Sheikh Zakzaky, the founder of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, is scheduled to attend an official ceremony held in the University of Tehran on Saturday in recognition of his self-effacing character and distinguished sacrifices in promoting Islam in the African continent.

In December 2015, Nigerian army troops attacked Sheikh Zakzaky’s residence and a place of worship belonging to the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, killing over three hundred and forty of his supporters in Zaria, Kaduna state.

Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife have lost their six sons, three of whom were killed during the Zaria Massacre.

He had remained under state detention in the Nigerian capital pending his release, which was ordered in late 2016. In 2019, a court in Kaduna state granted him and his wife bail to seek treatment abroad but they returned from India after three days due to unfair treatment and tough restrictions by security operatives deployed to the medical facility.

Last year, the Kaduna state higher court exonerated him from any charges and ordered his immediate release after 2,055 days of illegal detention.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria will mark the eighth anniversary of the Zaria Massacre this year. Remembering the massacre has become an annual event where members pray for those who were killed and injured by the security forces.

Hamas says it ‘does not target children’

Israel Hamas Attack

In a statement, it announced the resistance and Al-Qassam Brigades targeted the “Zionist military and security system”.

“We… categorically affirm the falsehood of the fabricated allegations promoted by some Western media outlets, which unprofessionally adopt the Zionist narrative full of lies and slander against our Palestinian people and their resistance, the latest of which was the claim of killing children, beheading them, and targeting civilians.”

More than 1,200 people have been killed in Israel since Saturday and over 3,000 wounded. Israel’s attacks on Gaza have resulted in the killing of more than 1,000 people while over 5,000 have been wounded.

Israeli broadcaster I24 and The Jewish Chronicle claimed that up to 40 Israeli babies were found murdered, including beheadings. The news was picked up by international media, making headlines in many news outlets.

However, Israeli army spokesperson unit told Anadolu on Wednesday that the Israeli army has no information confirming allegations that “Hamas beheaded babies”.

Iranian president urges int’l institutions to abandon biased approach towards Palestine

Ebrahim Raisi

President Raisi made the remarks during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday amid criticism over the West’s double standards and silence over the ongoing Israeli aggression on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinians said on Wednesday over 970 people have been killed and thousands more have been injured as a result of the Israeli regime’s blitz on the besieged coastal strip.

Gaza-based Palestinian groups launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, in response to the Israeli-settler violence against Palestinians and the desecration of the AL-Aqsa Mosque. Hundreds of Israelis have been killed in the operation, seen as a major intelligence failure for Tel Aviv.

Palestine reports Israeli use of banned white phosphorus in Gaza

Gaza Strip

The incendiary weapon was reportedly used during attacks on the al-Karama complex, a collection of residential towers in northern Gaza, which housed hundreds of families.

“Israeli warplanes and artillery use internationally #prohibited_white_phosphorus, destroying #Al_Karama neighborhood in the northwest of Gaza City with a continuous series of airstrikes,” the ministry wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday night.

“There are casualties and wounded, while ambulances and civil defense vehicles are unable to reach the area due to the intensity of the airstrikes and the destruction of the leading roads,” the post added.

Middle East Eye’s sources on the ground reported seeing scenes consistent with past Israeli white phosphorus use in Gaza, including during the 2008 conflict.

Palestinian civil defence teams has also reported the deployment of the munition in Gaza.

Journalists told Middle East Eye that a chemical they believe to be white phosphorus was also used near the Roots Hotel close to the port of Gaza on Wednesday morning.

Eyewitnesses attempted to put out the burning flames of the phosphorus on the ground by trying to put sand on top of it.

The use of white phosphorus is banned in heavily populated areas under international law. Protocol 3 of the UN’s Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons “prohibits the use of weapons primarily designed to set fire to objects or cause burn injuries against civilians.”

As a weapon, white phosphorus is easily ignited, difficult to put out, burns at high temperatures and can spread fire rapidly.

According to eyewitnesses, Israeli warplanes and artillery units dropped around 100 bombs in the area while residents were still inside.

The attacks have resulted in mass fatalities, with Middle East Eye’s reporter on the scene witnessing uncollected bodies lying on the street on Wednesday morning, around 12 hours after the attack first began.

“It was heinous, indiscriminate bombardment without warning,” Abdelaziz Helo, a resident who survived the bombing, told Middle East Eye on Tuesday.

“People were in their homes when the bombs began raining down on the area hysterically. It turned it into a block of flame. No women, no children, no men were able to move or leave the area,” he added.

The bombardment comes as Israel prepares for a ground invasion of the besieged territory, having already cut off fuel, water and food supplies to the area.

At least 1,055 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since Palestinian fighters launched land, sea and air raids in a surprise assault on Saturday morning. More than 1,200 Israelis have been killed since Saturday.

Israeli minister calls for Sderot residents to be armed

Israeli settler

“We’re changing the criteria . . . to make it possible for more and more people to be armed,” Itamar Ben-Gvir told reporters on Wednesday.

“This war proves how important it is to arm the citizenry . . . We’ve decided that from now on every Sderot resident will be able to carry a weapon.”

Local media reported that Sderot residents had been told to stay in bomb shelters until further notice on Wednesday morning, after paramedics confirmed several had been injured in multiple rocket strikes.

The far-right national security minister had announced his ministry is buying 10,000 guns to arm “civilian security teams” across the occupied territories.

The weapons, 4,000 of which have already been bought, will go to the towns close to the borders, but also to illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and to mixed Palestinian-Jewish cities, like Haifa.

Ben-Gvir is a hardline Jewish settler who has past convictions for supporting terrorism and incitement against Palestinians.

Iran says ready to host OIC extraordinary meeting on Palestine

Gaza Strip

The mission also conveyed Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian’s gratitude to OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha for exchanging views during their constructive negotiations on the developments in Palestine.

The mission officially said the Islamic Republic of Iran is fully ready to host the extraordinary ministerial meeting of the OIC.

Following the phone call on Monday, between Amirabdollahian and Brahim Taha, on the beastly crimes being perpetrated by the Zionist regime against Palestinian civilians, especially in the Gaza Strip, “we would like to express Iran’s foreign minister’s gratitude for the opportunity provided to exchange views with the honorable secretary general and his constructive negotiations with him on the issue.”

“The foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran expressed his deep hatred and concern about the criminal actions by the Zionist regime against the Palestinian people as vivid examples of war crimes and genocide, and announced that the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the massive military and savage moves by the Zionist regime of Israel in Palestine that have so far led to the martyrdom and injury of hundreds of children of the Palestinian nation, especially infants, kids and women,” it added.

Amirabdollahian thanked Brahim Taha for his timely condemnation of the regime’s actions and emphasized that the apartheid and child-killing regime is responsible in this context, according to the mission.

The Iranian diplomat also stressed that considering the high sensitivity of the case, the OIC should swiftly deal with the important matter at the highest possible level and informed the secretary general of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s full readiness to host the emergency meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Tehran, in the first agreed opportunity, Iran’s Permanent Mission in OIC said.

It was decided that the proposal would be submitted to the secretariat in writing, it added.

“Hereby, we would be grateful if the OIC secretariat immediately starts the necessary consultations with the member states of the organization on the proposal by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s government and announce the final result to the mission in order to advance the procedures.”

The latest escalation between Hamas and Israel began early on Saturday, when the Palestinian fighters launched a surprise attack on multiple locations along the Gaza border in response to Israel’s repeated aggression against Palestinians and desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israeli officials estimate that more than 1,200 people have been killed in the Hamas assault and over 3,000 have been wounded.

Israeli massive air strikes on the densely-populated Gaza Strip, has so far killed almost 950 people.

Hamas rejects Biden’s remarks on Israel

Joe Biden

“These remarks are an attempt to cover up the crimes and terror of the Zionist government,” Hamas said in a statement on its website.

Hamas stressed Biden’s remarks overshadowed the “criminality and terrorism of the Zionist government” and criticized the US president for not addressing “massacres committed by the Zionist forces against people in cold blood.”

Hamas concluded the statement urging the American administration to reassess its position and accusing it of exhibiting a “policy of double standards” when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Biden has pledged unwavering support for Israel as its military pummels Gaza with bombardment, in the wake of an unprecedented attack from the Palestinian group Hamas over the weekend.

In a White House speech on Tuesday, Biden said that Washington will provide additional military assistance to Israel, which has since declared war on Hamas.

He also stressed the brutality of Saturday’s attack — which killed hundreds of people and saw others taken captive — and compared Hamas to Daesh, accusing it of “terrorism”.

“This is what they mean by human tragedy, an atrocity on an appalling scale,” Biden stated, adding, “We’re going to continue to stand united, supporting the people of Israel who are suffering unspeakable losses and opposing the hatred and violence of terrorism.”

The US president, however, did not provide details about the Israeli war in Gaza or its aims — only backing what he called Israel’s “duty to respond to these vicious attacks”.

US aircraft carrier arrives in eastern Mediterranean

US aircraft carrier

The forces include the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford; its eight squadrons of attack and support aircraft; the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Normandy; and the Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyers USS Thomas Hudner, USS Ramage, USS Carney and USS Roosevelt, according to a Pentagon statement.

In addition, Washington has moved US Air Force F-15s, F-16s and A-10s “to augment existing fighter squadrons in the region.”

“The arrival of these highly capable forces to the region is a strong signal of deterrence should any actor hostile to Israel consider trying to take advantage of this situation,” US Central Command head Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla said in a statement.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin first announced Sunday that the US carrier strike group had moved closer to Israel in response to the Palestinian group Hamas launching a major attack on Israel.

Politico reported Tuesday that the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, which was previously scheduled to deploy from Norfolk, Va., may join the USS Gerald R. Ford in the eastern Mediterranean.

In a coordinated surprise attack that began Saturday, Hamas sent forces into multiple Israeli towns by land and sea and struck multiple targets with rockets.

More than 1,200 Israelis and Palestinians have been killed in the conflict along with 14 US citizens as of Tuesday. American citizens also are among those being held hostage by Hamas, the White House has confirmed.

The violence has prompted the United States to send air defenses, munitions and other equipment to Israel, with promises to send more.

Moving the US ships and aircraft to the Eastern Mediterranean is also meant to act as a deterrent to other nations or groups stepping into the conflict, according to national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

“Let me be clear, we did not move the carrier for Hamas,” Sullivan told reporters Tuesday at the White House.

“We moved the carrier to send a clear message of deterrence to other states or nonstate actors that might seek to widen this war,” he added.

Though he did not identify specific groups at the time, US officials have said they’re worried the Lebanese group Hezbollah could make “the wrong decision” and choose to open a second front to the conflict.

Sullivan stated that President Biden ordered contingency planning.

“The president has also tasked us with engaging in contingency planning for any and all escalation scenarios,” he said, adding, “And we are now deeply engaged in that planning. And we’re consulting with allies and partners as well about all of the potential scenarios that might unfold in the days ahead.”
