Iranian female journalists face new charges after temporary release

Niloufar Hamedi & Elaheh Mohammadi

A video footage vent viral on social media on Sunday showing the two journalists celebrating their release.

“After footage of the defendants without hijab was released online, a new case has been filed against them,” Mizan said.

They were sentenced to prison for “collaborating with the enemy country” while covering the death of 22-year old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini in 2022 after she was taken in by the police for a briefing on her hijab.

Her death triggered massive protests and deadly riots across Iran.

Hamedi and Mohammadi are currently prohibited from leaving the country until the appeals court’s decision is issued.

Rescue efforts underway in snow-hit areas in Iran

Iran Snow

The head of the country’s Relief and Rescue Organization Babak Mahmoudi said on Monday over 5,800 people affected by the harsh weather conditions in 13 provinces, mainly in the northern and western parts of the country, have received help during the past six days.

He added dozens of teams were dispatched to the affected areas to rush the patients, including 19 pregnant women, to medical centers and help vehicles unstuck from the frigid roads.

The official said rescue teams have distributed blankets, food packages, and potable water among those who were trapped in their vehicles in the snow.

Although the snow has been a boon for the country after a period of low precipitations, the heavy snowfall has cuff off access to hundreds of villages, leaving many of them without water and power.

Israeli actions in Gaza not to avert its demise: Iranian spokesman

Gaza War

Nasser Kanaani posted a message on his X account on Monday on the 100th day of the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian territory.

“100,000 Palestinian victims (including over 23,000 martyrs and more than 60,000 injured) as a result of 100 days of war by the Zionist regime against Gaza, is a dark, disgraceful, and shameful record that has been kept in the pages of history and in the court of human conscience for the fake Israeli regime  and the US government forever,” he said.

“Now, the Zionist regime’s hands are devoid of the least strategic achievements and these crimes will never save the apartheid regime from the danger of collapse and they will add nothing to the regime but a downhill towards collapse as well as disgrace and international responsibility for its known supporters,” the spokesman added.

“The future belongs to Palestine and its oppressed but patient and resistant nation.”

On day 100 of the war on Gaza, Israel’s relentless bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip continues with no sign of easing, amid a growing humanitarian catastrophe and the looming threat of a regional spillover.

At least 23,968 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and 60,582 injured, according to Palestinian health authorities. It’s estimated that around 7,000 others remain unaccounted for.  The remaining people struggle to remain alive.

The United Nations estimates that 1.9 million people, nearly 85 percent of the population, have been internally displaced, while more than 90 percent face acute food insecurity.

US says expects retaliation from Yemen’s Houthis after strikes

Yemen Houthis

While the US is still assessing the damage, officials believe the strikes had “good effect” against Houthi infrastructure in Yemen that has been used to attack shipping in the region, Kirby claimed.

The US government is now watching “very, very closely” for any potential retaliatory strike by the Houthis, Kirby said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. He added the administration hopes the Houthis will rethink their aggressive activity in the region.

“Nobody wants to conflict with the Houthis. We’re not looking for a conflict with Yemen here. We’re trying to get these attacks to stop.”

Last week, the US and UK launched a military operation in the Red Sea in response to the actions of the Yemen-based Houthi group. The Houthis have pledged solidarity with Palestinians amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The Houthis have vowed not to stop attacking merchant vessels until Israel ends its ongoing war with Hamas, which erupted on October 7. More than 50 countries have since been affected in 27 Houthi attacks on ships, according to the White House.

Following the US-UK strikes, the Houthis announced that Washington and London interests are “legitimate targets” for the Yemeni fighters.

Russia calls on West to stop supplying arms to Ukraine if it wants talks

Maria Zakharova

Addressing a news conference in Davos, Cassis said that efforts are being made to bring Russia into peace discussions on Ukraine mediated by other countries and stressed that a peace conference could not be held without Russia’s participation.

“If it is about some countries’ desire to find a way out of the dead end they have been brought into by Washington, this is one thing. In this case, they should stop supplying weapons to Ukraine, stop imposing anti-Russian sanctions, and stop making Russophobic statements,” she told the Izvestia newspaper.

“If this rhetoric is geared toward drawing Russia into some sort of a psychedelic process on the West’s terms to influence Russia’s principled approaches, we won’t be lured into this trap,” she stressed.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has recently published statistics detailing the aid supplied to Ukraine from abroad during the conflict with Russia. According to its figures, Kiev’s foreign backers together have spent more than $203 billion on assisting the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Some 54 countries have been providing assistance to the Ukrainian forces amid the fighting with Russia, the ministry announced.

More than 500 US and NATO spacecraft are working for the needs of Kiev. Those include 70 military surveillance satellites, while the rest are commercial but of double use, the ministry claimed in a post on Telegram.

Ukrainian troops are also relying on more than 20,000 Starlink terminals from Elon Musk’s SpaceX, according to the figures.

Kiev has been supplied with more than 1,600 units of missile and artillery equipment, over 200 air defense systems, some 5,220 tanks and armored vehicles, and more than 23,000 drones, the ministry said.

The Russian military’s estimates also claim that over 13,500 foreign mercenaries came to Ukraine to fight for Kiev. Among these were some 8,500 Europeans and over 2,700 from North and South America, while the rest traveled from Asia and Africa, it added.

Officials have estimated that a total of 5,900 visiting soldiers of fortune have been killed, while over 5,600 have fled the battlefield. The number of foreigners in the ranks of the Ukrainian military currently stands at over 1,900, according to Moscow.

In late November, Zelensky announced that Ukraine would switch from attacking to building fortifications, acknowledging that the counteroffensive, which had begun in early June and aimed to cut Russia’s land bridge to Crimea, had ended without success. Moscow estimates that Kiev has lost over 125,000 troops and 16,000 pieces of heavy equipment, including a lot of Western-supplied hardware, in its failed attempts to advance.

Since then, President Vladimir Putin and his Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu have both said that Russian forces have been holding the initiative in the conflict.

The flow of foreign military aid to Kiev has significantly reduced in recent months. In the US, Republican lawmakers are resisting attempts by the Biden administration to push through another $60 billion in assistance for Kiev, while Hungary has vetoed the EU’s planned four-year, €50 billion ($55 billion) aid package for Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba told recently CNN that authorities in Kiev “don’t have a plan B” if the US funding doesn’t arrive in time.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that deliveries of weapons to Kiev by the US, EU and their allies will not prevent it from achieving the goals of its military operation and will only increase the risk of a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO. According to Russian officials, the provision of arms, intelligence-sharing, and training of Ukrainian troops means that Western nations have already become de-facto parties to the conflict.

Hamas says destroyed 1,000 Israeli military vehicles in past 100 days of Gaza war

Hamas

Abu Obaida, the spokesman for al-Qassam Brigades, which is Hamas’ military wing, made the announcement in a statement on Sunday.

“During these 100 days, we have destroyed or rendered out of service about 1,000 Zionist military vehicles that had infiltrated the Gaza Strip in its north, center, and south,” he said.

The regime began its brutal military aggression following Operation al-Aqsa Storm by Gaza Strip-based resistance movements. Its genocidal war has killed nearly 24,000 Palestinians so far, most of them women and children, while leaving over 60,000 others injured.

The spokesperson confirmed that the brigades have conducted “hundreds of successful military operations” throughout the past 100 days, adding that the battle against the occupation forces “is expanding day after day and is burning this enemy and all those who supported and assisted it”.

Abu Obaida also scoffed at the Israeli regime’s claims about alleged gains during its military aggression on Gaza.

“The alleged achievements that the enemy announces about controlling or destroying what it calls weapons depots, ready-to-launch missile platforms, and kilometers of tunnels are ridiculous…and the day will come when we prove that these claims are false.”

Abu Obaida also rejected any prospect of negotiations with the Israel regime before a complete and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, saying, “Any talks before stopping the Israeli aggression are worthless.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Abu Obaida reflected on the situation of Israeli captives in the Gaza Strip.

He asserted that “the fate of many enemy captives has become unknown in recent weeks … due to the Zionist aggression and most likely, many of them have been killed”.

“The rest [of Israeli captives] remain in imminent and significant danger every hour, and the enemy bears full responsibility for their safety,” he continued.

US showed its aggressive nature by striking Yemen: Iran’s president

US UK Yemen Attack

In a phone call with Head of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council Mahdi al-Mashat on Sunday, Raisi said all freedom-seeking nations in the world condemn the US aggression against the Yemeni people.

He added the Yemenis have resisted the aggression of foreign powers for years and are still playing an effective role in defending the oppressed Palestinians.

The president praised the Yemeni people’s support for the Palestinians and placed a premium on maintaining security of shipping lines for countries.

Raeisi stated Israel was a genocidal regime for committing crimes against Palestinian civilians, particularly women and children in Gaza.

The president reiterated Iran’s principled stance on the support for the Palestinian people and emphasized that Israeli aggression will end with the final victory of the Palestinians.

In their first assault in the early hours of Friday, the US and Britain, backed by Bahrain, Australia, Canada and the Netherlands, struck more than 60 targets at almost 30 locations in Yemen, killing five people and injuring six others.

The Yemeni fighters have been attacking commercial ships transiting the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, and have said they will continue until Israel withdraws from the Gaza Strip.

Israel launched its hostilities in Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance carried out an unprecedented operation against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

So far, the Tel Aviv regime has killed nearly 24,000 people, mostly women and children, in Gaza.

During the Sunday phone call, the Yemeni official reiterated his country’s steadfastness in the fight against Israel in support of the Palestinian people.

Biden “running out” of patience with Netanyahu over Gaza war: Report

Biden Netanyahu

Citing US officials with knowledge of the matter, the Axios news website reported that Biden and senior American officials are getting frustrated with Netanyahu and his refusal to comply with the administration’s requests concerning the conflict in Gaza.

“The situation sucks and we are stuck. The president’s patience is running out,” Axios quoted one US official as saying.

The report also noted that Biden has not engaged in conversation with the Israeli prime minister for the past 20 days.

The last phone call between the two men, which occurred on Dec. 23, was described as “tense”.

“There is immense frustration,” another US official told the Axios.

Among the US requests from Netanyahu are the release of the Palestinian tax revenues Israel is withholding, Israel’s inaction to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, Netanyahu’s rejection of the US plan for a reformed Palestinian Authority to have a role in post-Hamas Gaza and a reduction in Israeli operations in Gaza.

Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen, who the Axios said has been in close contact with the American officials about the conflict, stated, “At every juncture, Netanyahu has given Biden the finger.”

“They are pleading with the Netanyahu coalition, but getting slapped in the face over and over again,” the senator told the Axios.

Israel has launched relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by the Palestinian resistance group which Tel Aviv claims killed 1,200 people in Israel.

At least 23,968 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and 60,582 injured, according to Palestinian health authorities.

According to the UN, 85% of the population of Gaza is already internally displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure is damaged or destroyed.

Israel committed horrific crimes during 100 days of Gaza war: Palestine foreign ministry

Gaza War

In a statement released on Sunday, the ministry said that 100 days have passed “and the Israeli occupation has turned Gaza into an uninhabitable place, committed horrific crimes, and forcibly displaced approximately 2 million people”.

The ministry also strongly denounced unwavering support by the US-led Western countries for Israel during the continued brutal aggression.

“Hundred days have passed and some countries are still unconvinced that the occupation’s massacres have eroded Israel’s ‘defense’ argument. These countries need to reassess their support for the war,” the ministry added.

The ministry noted that “the international community was, once again, failing to implement international resolutions related to the Palestinian cause”.

Meanwhile, the ministry also condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments in which he pledged “to continue the genocidal war in defiance of both the international community and the role of the International Court of Justice”.

“States that have enabled, encouraged and participated in Israel’s genocide are also complicit in these attacks against the Court and its officials.”

On Saturday, the Israeli prime minister stated that the ICJ was not able to stop Israel’s war in Gaza.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague began hearings on Thursday over a charge that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

South Africa, in an 84-page suit filed against Israel at the top UN court on December 29, asked the top court to urgently declare that the Tel Aviv regime has breached its responsibilities under international law since October 7, 2023, when it launched hostilities in the besieged territory.

At least 23,968 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and 60,582 injured, according to Palestinian health authorities.

It’s estimated that around 7,000 others remain unaccounted for. The remaining people struggle to remain alive.

UN rapporteurs say half of the population are starving, and nine out of 10 are not eating every day.

Schools, mosques, churches, Hospitals and ambulances have been a frequent target of regime strikes which have left only a handful of the medical facilities partially operational.

AFC Asian Cup 2023: Iran seals a comfortable win against Palestine

Iran Football Team AFC 2023

As Israel’s war on Gaza wages on its 100th day, Palestine opened their AFC Asian Cup 2023 campaign against Iran.

Huge cheers greeted the Palestine squad before their national anthem was played as the Iranian fans showed solidarity with their Middle Eastern counterparts, with some holding the Iran flag side-by-side with the Palestine colours.

Fans of Iran and Palestine also paused for a moment’s silence for Palestinian victims of the war in the blockaded enclave. Since the start of the aggression, Israel has killed more than 23,800 Palestinians, mostly women and children. Nearly 60,300 Palestinians have also been wounded, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Goals from Karim Ansarifard, Shoja Khalilzadeh, Mehdi Ghayedi and Sardar Azmoun gave Iran all three points while Tamer Seyam scored a consolation for Palestine

Iran got the game rolling in a vociferous arena, striking a goal in the match’s first minute, leaving the Palestinian defence surprised.

The early goal in the match edged fans in their seat as Iran loomed in ball possession, eventually scoring another goal in the 12th minute of the game.

Continuing to press down, Iran shot in another goal before half time, showcasing their dominance in the tournament.

Finally, before the end of the first half of the game, the Palestinians got their break, striking a goal into the back of Iran’s net.

After the half, Iran reigned in its dominance as substitute Sardar Azmoun taped in a goal from close range.
