Diplomats say NATO should prepare for US to leave amid Ukraine war

Donald Trump NATO

The possibility of America’s withdrawal is a “concern,” one European diplomat told the paper, adding, “Nobody knows what he’s going to do next.”

The former president secured his leadership in the Republican primaries earlier this week as he swept 14 out of 15 states at stake on Super Tuesday and got 995 Republican convention delegates’ votes. His only opponent, Nikki Haley, dropped out of the race for the GOP nomination soon thereafter.

He is now expected to face off against President Joe Biden in November since the incumbent American leader also came out on top in the Democratic primaries.

Earlier, several former senior US officials claimed that a Trump White House could make America withdraw from NATO. Former US Defense Secretary Mark Esper made such a prediction in December 2023. According to him, Trump could start pulling US forces out of NATO countries, potentially causing “the collapse of the alliance”. Reuters also reported on such a possibility at that time.

In mid-February, Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton, made a similar statement.

“NATO would be in real jeopardy,” he said, adding that Trump “would try to get out”.

A European diplomat stated that the rest of the bloc should “do the planning” for a scenario in which Trump follows through on such plans or just weakens America’s commitment to NATO.

“Preparations need to be in place,” the paper’s source added.

Another official described NATO as “so overdependent on the US”. A “discussion” on hedging against risks of a US withdrawal was “necessary”, this person added.

A third source quoted by the daily said European nations should check the adequacy of their own “defense planning” amid such risks.

In the UK, similar concerns were previously voiced by Lord Kim Darroch, a former British ambassador to the US and a prime minister’s national security adviser.

“If I were an official in any prime minister’s office around Europe, I would be commissioning the experts in government to start doing some contingency thinking about how a NATO without the United States would look and function – just in case,” he said in a piece he wrote for Prospect last month.

Trump himself has not made any comment lately about leaving the alliance. Instead, he said in February that he would not “protect” those NATO members that fall short of the 2% spending threshold in case of an attack, including by Russia.

Speaking at a campaign rally in South Carolina on February 10, he recalled what he described as a conversation with “the president of a big country” in Europe. When allegedly asked whether he would rush to the nation’s aid in case of an attack by Moscow, Trump said that if this nation hadn’t spent enough on defense, he “would encourage [Russia] to do whatever the hell they want” to it.

Moscow itself has repeatedly denied any plans to attack a NATO member, adding that starting a global war would go against “common sense”.

Dr. Azadeh Keyvani won the award in the applied and industrial physics section and for her success in developing techniques of using AI in fields ranging from Education to research on cancer.

The award is reserved for physicists who do extra-academic work activities.

According to Ms. Azadeh Keyvani, among her extra-activities that helped her succeed in receiving this award are the creation and management of an educational institution whose main goal is to empower students by focusing on the underprivileged in the fields of science and technology.

In addition to educational activities, she is also active in the field of data science and artificial intelligence, focusing on health and medicine.

Sharif University said Keivani is also trying to create fields for early diagnosis of various diseases, including cancer and heart diseases, by producing different models of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

US pier plan to deliver aid to Gaza ‘step in right direction’: Hamas

Gaza War

“From our side, governmental bodies are ready to help distribute the aid to the people who need it,” he said, adding that he was hopeful the initiative would “alleviate the suffering caused by this humanitarian catastrophe”.

However, he added that the proposed plan was “not the shortest and easiest way” to deliver aid to Gaza and that several questions remain on the logistics and who will operate the pier.

“The Americans have to pressure Israel to open all borders, the sea, the air and the ground, to allow people to get what they need,” he said.

The spokesperson rejected Israel’s repeated claims that aid entering the Strip would benefit Hamas fighters, saying, “Israel as an occupying power has a duty under international law to care for the lives of civilians”.

He stated that Hamas was not “a group of fighters but a legitimate representative of the vast majority of Palestinians” whose main goal is to “secure the aid for our people”.

President Joe Biden said during his State of the Union address on Thursday night the US Army will construct a temporary pier on the Gazan coast in order to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian enclave.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in Gaza since October, according to local Hamas-run authorities. Almost 90% of Gaza’s pre-war population have become refugees, with UN aid chief Martin Griffiths warning last week that life is “draining out of Gaza at terrifying speed”.

Israel has rejected calls for a comprehensive ceasefire, insisting on its goal to completely “eliminate” Hamas in Gaza.

Yemen’s Hothis say struck US vessel, destroyers with naval missiles, drones

Yemen Yahya Saree

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a video statement on Saturday that Yemeni forces implemented “two qualitative military operations” targeting a ship and a number of American warship destroyers in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden with a “number of naval missiles and 37 drones”.

“The first operation targeted the American ship ‘Propel Fortune’ in the Gulf of Aden with a number of suitable naval missiles, while the second operation targeted a number of US destroyers in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden with 37 drones.”

“The two operations successfully achieved their goals,” he added.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces will continue to carry out their military operations in the Red and Arab Sea until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted,” the spokesman stressed.

Earlier on Saturday, top Yemeni official Mohammed Ali al-Houthi warned the US against the continuation of its hostile moves in the Red Sea, saying the Yemeni Armed Forces are fully aware of the “loopholes” of American aircraft operations in the strategic waterway.

“The heroes in the armed forces know about the loopholes that can be exploited while the take-off or landing of American aircraft on the ships,” Houthi wrote in an Arabic-language post on his X social media account on Saturday.

“I advise the United States and its allies to issue a decision not to fly at all.”

Speaking in a weekly televised address on Thursday, leader of the movement Abdul-Malik al-Houthi stressed the United States is the main culprit in the Israeli genocide in Gaza and the silence of the international community on the regime’s crimes is a source of shame.

Two women to referee Tehran’s 103rd Derby match from VAR room

Tehran derby football match Persepolis and Esteghlal

President of the Iranian Football federation said Ms. Mahnaz Zokaii will be the second female referee of the match which is the 103rd one in the history of the two most popular football clubs of Iran, Esteghlal F.C. and Perspolis F.C.

Zokaii, along with Ms. Mahsan Ghorbani, will referee the match from within the VAR room at Azadi Stadium in the Iranian capital.

Asif Ali Zardari voted Pakistan’s president for second time

Asif Ali Zardari

Zardari was voted in with 411 votes to 181 for the opposition-backed candidate, the Election Commission of Pakistan announced after tallying the votes by national MPs, provincial MPs and senators.

Lawmakers of Bhutto’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) voted Zardari into the largely ceremonial post, backed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party in an alliance forged after the February 8 polls.

Under the terms of the coalition pact, which also includes a handful of smaller parties, PML-N’s Shehbaz Sharif was sworn-in as prime minister on Monday.

Zardari is expected to be sworn in at a ceremony on Sunday.

Pakistan’s February 8 election was tainted by allegations of pre-poll rigging and vote tampering, with former prime minister Imran Khan jailed and barred from contesting and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party targeted by arrests and censorship, with members forced to stand as independents.

They defied expectations to win more seats than any other party last month, but fell far short of the majority needed to govern — clearing the way for the alliance between PML-N and PPP.

However, PTI claim a polling day mobile internet blackout and a massive delay in results were used to cover up nationwide rigging preventing their landslide victory.

PTI nominated Mehmood Khan Achakzai, a lawmaker from the western city of Quetta, as their presidential candidate.

Zardari, 68, was previously boosted to presidential office in 2008 on a sympathy vote following the gun and bomb assassination of Benazir Bhutto as she campaigned for re-election.

He has been battered by recurring bouts of graft allegations and spent more than 11 years in jail, a long time even by the standards of Pakistani politicians.

But he has a reputation for bouncing back from scandals that might prove career-ending for others.

During his first stint in office — which ended in 2013 — he rolled back the powers of the presidency.

But as the PPP’s patriarch he is expected to steer his party through a coalition analysts regard as shaky after the fraught results of last month’s election.

Ukraine rejects proposed peace summit with Russia

Zelensky Putin

“We don’t see Russian representatives at such a summit,” Zelensky said at a joint conference with the Turkish leader in Istanbul, reiterating his old thesis that a peace plan should be prepared by other countries without Moscow’s participation – an idea already repeatedly rejected by Russia.

Erdogan said that Ankara is ready to host a peace summit on Ukraine with Russia’s participation. He recalled that the Black Sea Initiative prevented a global food crisis.

“We are ready to hold a peace summit with Russia’s participation. The Black Sea Initiative helped prevent a global food crisis. This agreement was again concluded in this hall. We are ready to provide all possible support to the new agreement, as before,” the Turkish leader stated during a press statement with the participation of Zelensky in Istanbul on Friday.

Moscow has repeatedly indicated that it is ready for talks, but Kiev has introduced a legislative ban on them. The West ignores Ukraine’s constant refusals to engage in dialogue.

According to the Kremlin, the conflict in Ukraine can move to a peaceful course if the de facto situation and new realities are taken into account, and all of Moscow’s demands are well known.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that if Ukraine wants a negotiation process, performative gestures are not the way. It is necessary to cancel the decree prohibiting negotiations with Russia. According to the president, Russia has never been against the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine by peaceful means, but insists on the observance of Russian security guarantees.

Iran: UN human rights mechanisms ‘plaything’ for western governments

Iran Protests

Kanaani stressed the report released by the so-called international fact-finding committee repeats groundless allegations rooted in inaccurate and biased information, and therefore, lacks legal credibility and is fundamentally rejected.

“The so-called fact-finding committee, was established with a farcical show of human rights by some Western countries, especially Germany, and with the money donated by them, in November 2022, and after a scheme to destabilize the situation inside Iran failed.”

“The committee has not only not found any facts by releasing a report containing an organized collection of distorted realities and lies, but also distorted realities in a targeted manner,” he added.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran regards the report, which has been drawn up through the machinations of the Zionist regime, the United States and certain Western countries, as a clear example of abusing lofty human rights concepts and values in order to advance short-sighted political objectives, and dismisses it as lacking in any legal value and effect,” the spokesman continued.

“By presenting its recent report, the so-called international fact-finding committee has shown that it acts upon the agenda of the German, British, American and Zionist masterminds of the report and is in their pay and has compromised the United Nations’ human rights mechanism for the wicked and illegal objectives of the above-said regimes.”

Kaanani explained that the countries behind the establishment of the so-called fact-finding committee are “furious” with the security and stability in Iran as well as with “the failure of their involvement in the riots back in 2022” and they are seeking to take revenge on the Iranian nation by publishing this report.

“We recommend these countries deal with cases of rights violations in their own countries rather than making unwarranted interference in Iran,” he said.

“If they have a modicum of honesty and compassion with regards to human rights and women’s rights, they should have paid attention to the killing of more than 30,000 Palestinian citizens – over 70% of whom are women and children – over the past 5 months and stopped genocide and crimes against humanity in Gaza,” the spokesman noted.

He stressed that whatever has been presented over the almost past two years in verbal and written reports by the so-called fact-finding committee to the Human Rights Council has been unilateral finger-pointing by those behind the establishment of this committee against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“The countries which themselves have violated the rights of other nations and are accomplices in all crimes committed by the Zionist regime, namely the massacre of civilians, especially women and children, cannot claim to be advocating or judging the situation of human rights in a given country; rather, they should be accountable for their crimes with regards to blatant violation of human rights,” Kanaani added.

“It goes without saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran has committed itself to making every effort for the ever-increasing development and progress of its women and girls, and future of Islamic Iran will be built by women and girls who are a source of pride and honor for the country, and all along this path, they will vigilantly foil interventionist plots.”

US says in process of preparing troops to deploy in Gaza pier mission

Pentagon

“The department is moving quickly to deploy its joint logistics, over-the-shore capability to provide the expeditionary pier to enable the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza,” Ryder said during a press briefing on Friday.

“We are in the process of identifying, sourcing, and, in some cases, preparing forces to deploy [to Gaza].”

The Pentagon anticipates it will require more than 1,000 US military personnel to build a temporary port in Gaza.

“We anticipate that it’ll take over 1,000 US forces to participate in building this capability,” Ryder highlighted.

The effort is expected to take several weeks, likely up to 60 days, Ryder added.

The Gaza pier mission is said to involve presence of US military personnel being on military vessels offshore, and not on the shore in Gaza, the Defense Department claimed.

“[The Pentagon] maintains the ability to provide unique capabilities from offshore without a US military presence within Gaza,” Ryder said, adding, “The concept that is being planned involves the presence of US military personnel on military vessels offshore, but does not require US military personnel to go ashore.”

According to the spokesperson, the mission will involve an offshore floating pier that will be able to receive commercial vessels with aid that will be offloaded onto the floating pier and then transloaded onto Navy support vessels. Those vessels will then take it to the floating causeway, which is approximately 1,800 feet or 500 meters long, and then transported onto land and then distributed into Gaza.

“Among other places, Cyprus has been highlighted as a place where aid can be loaded onto ships, and then taken to the floating pier, transloaded onto these logistics support vessels, transported over to the causeway and then again transported into Gaza,” Ryder stated.

The US has reportedly made more than 100 “quiet” arms sales to Israel, including thousands of bombs, since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas. Despite half-baked calls from the administration for Israel to spare civilian lives, the US has continued to restock their supply of weapons, helping to create one of the most intense bombing campaigns in military history.

On October 7, 2023, Palestinian movement Hamas launched a large-scale rocket attack against Israel from Gaza and breached the border, killing 1,200 people and abducting around 250 others. Israel launched retaliatory strikes, ordered a complete blockade of Gaza, and started a ground incursion into the Palestinian enclave with the declared goal of eliminating Hamas fighters and rescuing the hostages. Almost 31,000 people have been killed so far in the Gaza Strip, local authorities announced.

Germany says nobody wants to send military servicemen to Ukraine

Russia Ukraine War

Pistorius was in Finland to visit the German troops taking part in NATO’s Nordic Response wargames in the Arctic Circle. While there, he held a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart Antti Hakkanen.

“Nobody really wants to have boots on the ground in Ukraine,” Pistorius said Friday, responding to a question about recent remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron suggesting that the matter was open-ended.

Discussions about that “should stop”, he added.

“Nobody is now supporting ‘boots on the ground’,” Hakkanen agreed.

Macron said last week that no option should be ruled out, including ground troops, because Russia can’t be allowed to win. Only two Baltic states endorsed the idea, however, with most other NATO members publicly denouncing it.

Pistorius argued that what the West needs to do instead is ramp up the delivery of ammunition and equipment to the Ukrainian military.

“Germany is the second-largest supporter of Ukraine world wide,” donating €7.5 billion ($8.2 billion) this year alone, Pistorius noted, adding that Berlin has sent “air defense, artillery, ammunition, what[ever] Ukraine needs.”

Addressing questions about Germany’s decision not to send Ukrainie its long-range Taurus missiles, Pistorius said that would be a step too far.

“We always emphasize that long-range missiles won’t decide that war,” he told reporters, adding that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said “there is one decisive line we never will cross, and this is being participants, being party to the war”.

Last week, RT published an audio recording and a transcript of a conversation between senior German Luftwaffe (air force) officers from mid-February, in which they discussed the use of Taurus missiles to destroy the Crimean Bridge. The generals assumed the missiles would be delivered and tried to come up with ways of helping Ukraine use them while maintaining plausible deniability.

Russia has repeatedly warned the US and its allies that deliveries of weapons to Ukraine will not prevent Moscow from achieving the goals of its military operation, and will only serve to prolong the fighting and increase the risk of a direct confrontation with NATO.
