Nowruz commemorated at United Nations

Nowruz

Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani hosted his counterparts from different countries, as well as UNGA president Dennis Francis and the representative of UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Addressing the audience, Iravani said, “With the beginning of the spring and the new solar year, and concurrent with the rebirth of nature, Nowruz calls on all human beings to renew and refresh their bodies and souls.”

In the venue of the celebration of Nowruz a Haft Sin table, containing symbolic elements that are believed to bring good luck and wellbeing for the New Year, represented Iran and the other participating countries added symbols of their own cultures to the richness of the table.

This year’s Nowruz ceremony coincided with the holy fasting month of Ramadan and was welcomed by ambassadors and representatives of other Muslim countries too.

Live music was performed and a clip of Nowruz displaying symbols and rituals of the 12 countries that celebrate the event was screened.

With the start of the spring, people in Iran, Republic of Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and parts of Turkey, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, India, as well as Persian-speaking communities across the world celebrate Nowruz.

On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian congratulated his counterparts in countries that celebrate Nowruz, saying, “The ancient ritual and beautiful traditions of Nowruz are a symbol of the deep human, cultural, and civilizational ties between the nations of the region.”

Hamas: Israel intensifying civilian attacks to get concessions in truce talks

Gaza War

“With every round of negotiations, it escalates its crimes against our people, thinking that with such crimes it may achieve gains at the negotiating table,” said Hamdan.

“We affirm again that what the occupation does not take in the military battle and the crime of genocide, it will not take it with the machinations of politics and the games of negotiations.”

He added “approvals” previously agreed on in talks have now been retracted by Israel, calling it a “policy of procrastination”.

Israel’s response to Hamas’ latest counterproposal on a ceasefire and hostage release deal “was negative in general” and did not meet the demands of Hamas, according to Hamdan.

Hamas, which is believed to be holding nearly 130 Israeli hostages, demands an end to Israel’s ongoing offensive on the Gaza Strip in return for any hostage deal with Israel.

A previous deal in November 2023 saw the release of 81 Israelis and 24 foreigners in exchange for 240 Palestinians, including 71 women and 169 children.

Israel has waged a deadly military offensive on the Gaza Strip since an Oct. 7 cross-border attack led by Hamas in which some 1,200 Israelis were killed.

Nearly 32,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have since been killed in Gaza, and more than 74,000 injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities.

The Israeli war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid a crippling blockade of most food, clean water, and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to ensure its forces do not commit acts of genocide, and guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.

US imposes fresh sanctions against Iran over its missile, nuclear programs

United States Department of the Treasury

The Treasury announced on Wednesday that its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) targeted three procurement networks based in Iran, Turkey, Oman, and Germany, accusing them of supporting Iran’s ballistic missile, nuclear, and defense programs.

It claimed that these networks had engaged in procuring carbon fiber, epoxy resin, and other material for Iran’s missile program.

These supplies were allegedly used by the Self-Sufficiency Jihad Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force, the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) and other organizations sanctioned by the United States.

“Through complex covert procurement networks, Iran seeks to supply rogue actors around the world with weapons systems that fuel conflict and risk countless civilian lives,” said Brian Nelson, under secretary of the Treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence.

Nelson added the US Treasury will continue to use its tools to disrupt these networks and hold countries assisting in Iran’s drone and missile activities accountable.

Last month, the US Treasury introduced punitive measures targeting Iran’s ballistic missile and drone procurement programs as Washington looked to increase pressure on Tehran for supporting the Axis of Resistance against the Israeli aggression in Gaza.

The Joe Biden administration, which has claimed a diplomatic approach to Iran and efforts to return to the 2015 nuclear program, has not only failed to return to the agreement but has also tightened the sanctions regime against the country.

The United States under former president Donald Trump reinstated crippling sanctions on Iran after unilaterally walking out of the nuclear deal in May 2018, despite Iran’s full compliance with the terms of the JCPOA.

Iran has repeatedly said that its military programs, including its missile industry, are meant for deterrence and defense and not subject to negotiations.

Afghanistan tops list of world’s unhappiest country: Report

Taliban

In findings released on Wednesday, the World Happiness Report revealed that the US has slid from its 15th place last year to 23rd place this year.

The report, created via a partnership involving Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the World Happiness Report’s editorial board, pointed to happiness decreasing in all age groups for the US. It also found a significant decline among young people, who are now the least happy age group.

“This is a big change from 2006-10, when the young were happier than those in the midlife groups, and about as happy as those aged 60 and over. For the young, the happiness drop was about three-quarters of a point, and greater for females than males,” the report said.

Among people below the age of 30 from 2021 to 2023, the US ranks 62nd in happiness. Meanwhile, among those who are 60 and above, the US ranks 10th.

“In comparing generations, those born before 1965 are, on average, happier than those born since 1980. Among millennials, evaluation of one’s own life drops with each year of age, while among boomers life satisfaction increases with age,” according to a summary of the report.

Finland, for the seventh straight year, has been ranked the world’s happiest country. It is followed by Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Israel. The least happy country is Afghanistan, the report added, followed by Lebanon, Lesotho, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The report’s rankings are not based on any index of factors including GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption. Instead, the scores are based on individuals’ own assessments of their lives, according to researchers.

Over half of Gaza’s population on brink of famine: World Bank

Gaza War

The international organization called for urgent action to save lives.

“We join the international community in calling for immediate, free, and unimpeded access of medical supplies, food and life-essential services through all available means at speed and scale to the people of Gaza,” it said in a statement.

The World Bank Group’s board of directors in December approved the commitment of $35 million in funds to development partners which are active in Gaza, including the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Program (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

This funds include a $10 million package to the WFP to purchase food parcels and vouchers to reach an estimated 377,000 people.

The head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has also expressed concern about food security in the Gaza Strip.

“The hunger in Gaza serves as a stark reminder of the immense hardships civilians are enduring,” Jagan Chapagain wrote on X, saying, “desperate times call for urgent action.”

Stressing that the hunger serves as a stark reminder of the “immense hardships civilians are enduring,” he added the food crisis in the besieged enclave demands immediate attention and decisive measures.

“An increased, rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid is needed to reach those in need – now,” he noted.

“There is barely any food available,” and children are suffering from malnutrition.

Israel has waged a deadly military offensive on the Gaza Strip since an attack by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas last October, which killed nearly 1,200 people.

More than 31,900 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have since been killed in Gaza, and almost 74,000 injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities.

The Israeli war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid a crippling blockade of most food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Rights groups urge EU to suspend trade agreement with Israel over Gaza war

Gaza War

The Committee for the Abolition of Illegitimate Debt (CADTM) published an open letter on its website, which was addressed to many EU officials, including President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Council Charles Michel, and the bloc’s Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell.

More than 200 NGOs across Europe, including Oxfam, called on the EU to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, noting that human rights violations in Gaza “constitute a violation of the ‘essential elements’ clauses which state that the Agreement is conditional upon the parties’ respect for human rights and democratic principles.”

The groups also said that the “violation of the so-called ‘essential elements’ clauses enables the EU to terminate or suspend fully or partially the agreements.”

Despite all those violations, Israel’s economy “continues to enjoy privileged access to the EU market” via this agreement, and the bloc is Israel’s primary trade partner,” accounting for 28.8% of its trade in goods in 2022,” the letter read.

The groups also criticized the international community for “political and moral failure” which resulted in the current developments in Gaza and called on the EU to send a “strong message” by suspending the agreement with Israel.

Israel has waged a deadly onslaught on the Gaza Strip since a Hamas attack last October, which killed 1,200 people.

More than 31,900 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have since been killed in Gaza, and more than 74,000 injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities.

Axis of Resistance has foiled US schemes in West Asia: Iran Leader

Ayatollah Khamenei

Ayatollah Khamenei was extending his remarks during an address marking the Persian New Year in Tehran on Wednesday.

The Leader said the United States’ long-standing ambition to dominate the region has been undermined by the resilience of the Axis of Resistance.

The United States is now left with no option but to withdraw from the region, Ayatollah Khamenei added.

He refuted Western allegations that Iran orchestrates every act of resistance in the region, clarifying that while Iran supports these movements, they operate on their own.

Highlighting the plight of Palestinians, Ayatollah Khamenei said no conscientious person can remain silent in the face of the genocidal oppression undertaken by the Israeli regime in Gaza.

The Leader stated Washington has emerged as a “big loser” in the war in Gaza.

The unwavering support the United States gives to Israel has severely damaged its global reputation, inciting ten times more hatred towards Washington in the region, Ayatollah Khamenei added.

The Leader said the Israeli campaign of death and destruction in Gaza has illustrated the fragility of the regime given its struggle to get out of the “quagmire” of the besieged Palestinian territory.

“The Zionist regime is defeated whether it gets out of Gaza or not.”

Israel is no beset by deep divisions from within, the Leader added, and the internal strife is hastening the decline of the regime.

Ayatollah Khamenei censured the indifference of certain Western leaders toward the situation in Gaza and their continued support for Israel.

“Over 30,000 people are massacred, from infants to teens to youth to the elderly, men or women, to patients… Their houses are destroyed,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“The civilized world watches and not only keeps from preventing [these atrocities] but facilitates them.”

The Leader added the Israeli occupation of Palestine is a “great injustice.”

On the New Year’s theme of enhancing production through people’s participation, the Leader reiterated that economy remains the government’s top concern.

He urged mobilization of all resources and called for collective efforts by the entire nation to bolster economic growth.

The Leader highlighted the importance of implementing international economic agreements and improving efficiency as key strategies to further stimulate economy.

Despite ongoing attempts by adversaries aimed at “dismantling” Iran’s economy through sanctions and other tactics, the Leader said, these efforts have been consistently foiled by the resilience of the Iranian people.

The Leader stated Iran’s adversaries are attempting to instill despair among the nation by exaggerating the challenges and minimizing the achievements.

Ayatollah Khamenei underscored the significance of keeping hope and recognizing Iran’s remarkable run of successes in the face of such tactics by the enemy.

Emphasizing the critical role of national unity, Ayatollah Khamenei urged more work to foster solidarity among all Iranians.

The Leader called on the people to refrain from propagating animosity and division and, instead, unite in confronting Iran’s enemies.

Vice-president: Iran’s knowledge-based exports increase by 200%

Rouhollah Dehghani Firouz Abadi

Rouhollah Dehghani Firouzabadi added that the number of knowledge-based companies has also doubled during the period.

According to Dehghani, the increase in Iran’s knowledge-based exports in the past year indicates the proper foundation, dynamism and leapfrog growth in the innovation and technology ecosystem of the country.

Iran’s achievements in the knowledge-based sectors come at a time when the country has been under harsh sanctions imposed by the US and its allies.

Hamas leader: Israel sabotaging truce negotiations

Ismail Haniyeh

Brig. Gen. Fayeq al-Mabhouh, the head of police operations in Gaza, was killed Monday in an Israeli raid on Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

Al-Mabhouh was responsible for coordinating the entry of humanitarian aid with Palestinian tribes and the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) into the northern Gaza Strip, according to a statement by the Gaza Media Office.

“The occupation’s targeting of police officers and government agencies in the enclave depicts its attempt to spread chaos and perpetuate the blood shedding in Gaza,” Haniyeh said in a statement.

He emphasized that it “also reflects the occupation leaders’ attempts to sabotage the negotiations taking place in Doha.”

“This will not succeed in achieving Israel’s criminal plan, and Hamas will remain committed to the rights of our people and their clear demands to stop the aggression, withdrawing the army, and return the displaced,” he added.

Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas continue in Doha, mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the US, amid Israel’s ongoing devastating war on Gaza for nearly six months.

Israel has waged a deadly military offensive on Gaza since a cross-border incursion by the Palestinian group, Hamas, on Oct. 7 which killed nearly 1,200 people.

More than 31,900 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have since been killed in the enclave, and over 74,000 injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities.

The Israeli war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid a crippling blockade of most food, clean water and medicine, while 60%of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.

Holidaymakers flock to cities across Iran during Nowruz

Iran Travelers

Up north with its lush green sceneries, Hamedan, Shiraz, and Isfahan with their historical monuments, Yazd with its desert and star-studded sky at night, the holy cities of Mashhad and Qom, with their mausoleums, the Azeri-speaking provinces in northwest of the country with their cuisines, and the Kurdish-speaking west with its millennia-old cultural heritage are among the long list of the spots travelers would like to go to during the 13-day holidays.

However, there are those who prefer to stay in their hometowns and enjoy visiting their extended families and relatives during Nowruz and extend felicitations.

This year, the travelers to the western and southern provinces are advised to stay away from riverbeds because of the larger than normal rainfalls, which are predicted to cause flashflood.

The holidaymakers also have to bear in mind not to disrespect the holy month of Ramadan by eating or drinking in public, as this year the fasting month coincides with the New Year.
