Several killed in attacks on Ukraine’s Kharkiv, Russia’s Belgorod

A Russian strike on a crowded DIY hardware store in Kharkiv killed 12 people and wounded dozens more, Ukrainian prosecutors said on Sunday morning, the death toll rising as the country’s second-largest city reeled from two attacks a day earlier.

Two guided bombs hit the Epicentr DIY hypermarket in a residential area of the city on Saturday afternoon, Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov stated on national television.

The strikes caused a massive fire which sent a column of thick, black smoke billowing hundreds of metres into the air.

Forty-three people were injured, the local prosecutors’ office continued, adding that ten of the twelve dead had still not been identified.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated about 120 people had been in the hardware store when the bombs struck.

“The attack targeted the shopping centre, where there were many people – this is clearly terrorism.”

In a post on the Telegram app, Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed 16 people were still missing after the strike.

The past week has seen an uptick in strikes on the city after Russian troops stormed across the border, opening a new front north of the city.

Russia has bombarded Kharkiv, which lies less than 30 kilometres (20 miles) from its border, throughout the war, having reached its outskirts in a failed bid to capture it in 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a plea to Ukraine’s Western allies to help boost air defences to keep the country’s cities safe.

Ukrainian forces carried out multiple drone and artillery strikes on the Russian city of Belgorod and several villages near the border overnight, claiming the lives of four civilians and injuring many others including children, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov stated on Sunday.

Around 30 projectiles were shot down over the Russian border region on between Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, according to Gladkov. Despite the interceptions, the attacks caused multiple casualties.

“It grieves me to say that the number of civilian deaths has increased to four,” the official wrote on Telegram.

Three of the fatalities resulted from rocket strikes on Oktyabrsky village shortly before 7pm. Two people died on the spot, while another man succumbed to “shrapnel wounds to his lower extremities” in a hospital a few hours later.

Another woman “was killed as a result of a direct hit in the yard of a private residential house in the village of Dubovoye”, Gladkov wrote around 9pm, adding that she “was in a greenhouse at the time of the attack and died of her injuries before the ambulance arrived”.

While there were no casualties in the city of Belgorod itself, at least two apartment buildings suffered heavy damage as a result of direct artillery hits. Two schools were damaged by blasts and shrapnel, while several commercial buildings had their facades, windows and roofs partially destroyed. Several vehicles were hit, according to videos from the scene.

By midnight, the number of injured across the region had reached 16 people, including at least two children.

An eight-year-old boy who was wounded in the shelling of Oktyabrsky suffered a “blast injury and external trauma to the lumbar back region,” Gladkov wrote, adding that the child’s “condition has been characterized as of medium severity.”

In another incident, a nine-year-old girl was injured when a “moving car was attacked by a drone on the highway between the village of Borisovka and the village of Plotvyanka in the Volokonovsky district,” Gladkov added.

Belgorod has become the one of the main targets of Kiev’s attacks, following a bombardment on New Year’s Eve that killed 25 civilians at a festive event, with continued shelling and attempts to break through to Russian territory in recent months.

In early May, Moscow’s armed forces began a push into Ukraine’s Kharkov Region, which borders on the Belgorod Region, seizing numerous villages in an effort to create a buffer zone to curb cross-border attacks.

President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed that if Kiev continues to “shell residential areas in border territories”, Russia “will be forced to create a security zone” to deprive Kiev of the capability to make such strikes.

Bahraini official says relations with Iran will be restored soon

“Resumption of political and commercial relations between the two countries is of great importance, because Iran is a neighboring country and Bahrain supports stable ties with all regional states,” Abdulnabi Salman stated on Saturday.

He added that the desire to resume relations between Manama and Tehran has been met with a positive response from the Bahraini government and the Council of Representatives, and the legislature has even put out a positive statement in this regard.

“Compared to other countries along the [Persian] Gulf, we are the closest country to Iran. Iranian expatriates live in Bahrain, and we are also witnessing the presence of Bahraini citizens in Iran. Trade exchanges between the two countries date back many decades,” Salman pointed out.

The senior Bahraini legislator stressed that Manama hopes to resume stable and strong political relations with Tehran, stressing, “This will happen in the very near future and will be based on respect for good neighborliness”.

He went on to note that Russia, interested in the stability of the West Asia region, has been mediating between Bahrain and Iran in order to revive diplomatic ties.

“The two countries may have political differences; but such differences will not last forever. Currently, they should take advantage of playing a central role in promotion of regional stability.”

Bahrain followed Saudi Arabia’s decision by severing diplomatic relations with Iran on January 4, 2016, after Iranian protesters, enraged by the execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr by the Saudi government, stormed its diplomatic mission in Iran.

Back in March 2023, Iran and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement in the Chinese capital of Beijing to restore their diplomatic relations and re-open embassies and missions.

During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on May 23, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifah said Manama looked forward to improving its relations with Iran.

King Hamad added that there was no reason to postpone the restoration of diplomatic relations between Bahrain and Iran, according to the official Bahrain News Agency (BNA).

Last Wednesday, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani visited Tehran to offer condolences on the passing of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who lost his life alongside seven others in a helicopter crash in northwest Iran on May 19.

Hamas says killed, captured Israeli soldiers in Gaza

The Hamas armed wing spokesman did not say how many soldiers had been abducted, and showed no proof of the claim.

“Our fighters lured a Zionist force into an ambush inside a tunnel … The fighters withdrew after they left all members of the force dead, wounded, and captured,” Abu Ubaida, the spokesman for Al Qassam Brigades, said in a recorded message.

The Israeli military on Sunday denied the claim.

“The IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) clarifies that there is no incident in which a soldier was abducted,” the military announced in a statement.

The comments by Abu Ubaida came hours after prospects for a resumption of mediated Gaza ceasefire talks grew on Saturday.

An official with knowledge of the matter said a decision had been taken to resume the talks next week after the chief of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency met the head of the CIA and the prime minister of Qatar.

The source, who declined to be identified by name or nationality, added it had been decided that “in the coming week negotiations will open based on new proposals led by the mediators, Egypt and Qatar and with active US involvement”.

A Hamas official later denied Israeli media reports the talks would resume in Cairo on Tuesday, telling Reuters: “There is no date.”

After more than seven months of war in Gaza, the mediators have struggled to secure a breakthrough, with Israel seeking the release of hostages held by Hamas and Hamas seeking an end to the war and a release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

Nearly 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive, Gaza’s health ministry has confirmed.

Hamas rejects talk of new negotiations with Israel over Gaza war

Israel Hostages

In a phone interview with Al Jazeera Arabic on Saturday, Hamdan said that the immediate requirement is for Israel to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and for all aggression to stop.

“We do not need new negotiations,” he stated, adding that Hamas has already agreed to a ceasefire proposal that Israel has rejected.

“There is no guarantee that it [Israel] will accept new proposals to go to negotiations … If there are no serious guarantees, this means giving Israel more time to continue the aggression,” he continued.

Earlier this month, Hamas approved a proposal for a ceasefire in the seven-month Gaza war put forward by mediators Qatar and Egypt although Israel said the proposal falls short of its demands.

On Saturday, according to Israeli media, officials involved in the negotiations said the Israeli government intended to renew talks for a Gaza captive release deal the in coming days, after a meeting with mediators in Paris.

According to the reports, Israeli intelligence chief David Barnea had agreed to a new framework for the stalled negotiations with mediators — CIA Director Bill Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

The new offer was drafted by the Israeli negotiating team and contains possible solutions to points of disagreement in previous discussions. But defence ministry officials believe that even if Israel agrees to a temporary ceasefire, it will be able to return to war again when needed after months.

Hamas has insisted that it is not willing to accept only a temporary ceasefire, but that an end to the fighting has to be permanent.

Israel has insisted that the war will not end before its goals are met, including the total defeat of Hamas. However, Israel is coming under growing international pressure to stop and is increasingly isolated. Among recent blows for Israel are an International Court of Justice order for it to stop its Rafah offensive, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court seeking arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and a decision by Ireland, Norway and Spain to recognise Palestine.

Meanwhile, Washington announced top diplomat Antony Blinken had also spoken with Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz about new efforts to achieve a ceasefire and reopen the border crossing in Gaza’s far-southern city of Rafah.

Al-Qahera News said Cairo was also continuing “its efforts to reactivate ceasefire negotiations and exchange prisoners and detainees”.

It added that Egypt was exerting “all kinds of pressure on Israel to urgently let in the aid and fuel” stranded at the Rafah crossing after its closure by Israel earlier this month.

But a Hamas official denied Israeli media reports that Gaza ceasefire talks would resume in Cairo on Tuesday.

“There is no date,” the unnamed Hamas official told the Reuters news agency when asked about the reports.

Talks aimed at reaching a hostage release and truce deal for Gaza ground to a halt this month after Israel launched a military operation in Rafah.

At least 35,900 people have been killed and 80,400 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7.

The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s attack stands at 1,200, with dozens still held captive.

On Saturday, thousands of Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv to demand urgent government action to bring home captives held in Gaza, after the bodies of several were retrieved.

Another protest, calling for the resignation of Netanyahu and an early election, was also held nearby.

Despite the immense pressure, Netanyahu and his government have so far failed to strike a deal with Hamas, with many critics doubting their desire to reach a deal.

WHO says Covid-19 killed nearly 13mn in two years

COVID in US

The deadly disease was the third highest cause of mortality globally in 2020 and moved up to second place in 2021. Covid-19 was among the top five causes of death in all regions of the world except Africa and the Western Pacific.

According to the WHO, the pandemic “wiped out nearly a decade of progress” in improving life expectancy in just two years. The report highlighted that between 2019 and 2021, global life expectancy dropped by 1.8 years to 71.4, the same level as in 2012. Similarly, global healthy life expectancy dropped in 2021 back to the 2012 level of 61.9 years.

The WHO report said the Americas and Southeast Asia were hit the hardest, with life expectancy in the regions dropping by approximately 3 years and healthy life expectancy by 2.5 years between 2019 and 2021. Meanwhile, the Western Pacific region was “minimally affected” during the first two years of the pandemic, it said.

“We must remember how fragile progress can be,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, adding that “in just two years, the Covid-19 pandemic erased a decade of gains in life expectancy.”

Covid-19 initially emerged in late 2019 and developed into the largest epidemic in nearly a century. The medical journal Lancet previously suggested that the number of Covid-related deaths may be as high as 18 million.

The WHO report mentioned that noncommunicable diseases such as ischemic heart disease and stroke, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and diabetes, which were the biggest killers before the pandemic, accounted for 78% of non-Covid deaths in 2020-2021.

Ayatollah Khamenei says mass participation in funeral of late president proved Iranians loyalty to Islamic Revolution

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a Saturday meeting held in the capital Tehran with the families of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and six of their companions who lost their lives in a helicopter crash in the northwestern Iranian province of East Azarbaijan last week.

Pointing to the enemy’s propaganda and claims regarding the estrangement of Iranian people from the Islamic Republic, the Leader said, “This incident, before the very eyes of the world and in practice, proved the attachment and loyalty of the Iranian nation to the president and those who embodied the mottoes of the Revolution.”

Iran’s Islamic Revolution against the Western-backed Pahlavi dynasty was spearheaded by the late Imam Khomeini in 1979 and led to the establishment of the Islamic Republic.

Praising President Raisi as a manifestation of the mottoes of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Khamenei stated, “Mr. Raisi relied on the slogans of the Revolution and the words of the Imam from the very beginning when he ran for the elections, and the whole world knew him as the president of the Revolution.”

“When people support and honor this man in such a great way, it means supporting the slogans of the Revolution,” he stressed.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that working for the people and serving the public was the most prominent feature of the martyrs of the incident.

“Martyr Raisi worked tirelessly day and night and was literally indefatigable,” the Leader added.

He touched on the epic funeral processions in the cities of Tabriz, Qom, Tehran, Shahr-e-Rey, Birjand, Mashhad, Maragheh, Zanjan and Najafabad, noting, “This glorious funeral showed that the Iranian nation is alive.”

Expressing his condolences to the families of the martyred individuals, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “Recounting the services and efforts of Mr. Raisi and Mr. Amirabdullahian in the domestic and foreign front is a long and detailed story.”

Iranians in their millions gathered in various cities across the country to commemorate the martyrdom of the late president and his companions as part of ceremonies held following the Leader’s declaration of five-day national mourning over the tragic loss.

Dozens of world leaders, presidents, ambassadors and international personalities as well as high-profile figures of the Axis of Resistance have over the past days participated in ceremonies across Iran to pay homage to the martyrs.

On Sunday, the helicopter carrying Raisi and his entourage crashed as it was on its way to Tabriz, the capital of Iran’s East Azarbaijan province, from a location on the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan where the Iranian president had opened a major dam project.
