Nearly half of Ukrainians want peace negotiations with Russia: Poll

Russia Ukraine War

According to the survey, the respondents’ sentiments differ in various regions, although the average figure for Ukraine is 44%. Residents in the country’s south are most in favor of negotiations (60%).

The vast majority of Ukrainians, 84%, are not willing to accept Moscow’s territorial demands. A total of 77% of respondents oppose the lifting of sanctions against Russia, while 58% oppose the introduction of provisions on the nuclear-free and non-aligned status of Ukraine into the constitution.

The poll was conducted on June 20-28. According to the Mirror of the week daily, no military personnel took part in the poll, so it reflects “the opinion of the home front.”

Last week, the Strana weekly reported that bloggers and some opposition politicians in Ukraine had started to speak out in favor of finding ways to resolve the conflict as soon as possible, accusing the authorities of seeking to profit from the fighting. Recently, Ukrainian social networks have been increasingly calling on the authorities to negotiate peace as soon as possible, noting that the goal of “reaching the 1991 borders” declared by the president’s office is unrealistic.

Even influencers with millions of followers, many of whom had previously tried to avoid political topics, began to take this stance. This trend was said to reflect the mood in Ukrainian society. Since last fall, a growing number of people has been calling for an early end to hostilities, even if this would involve the loss of part of the territory. The Ukrainian Security Service has already “held talks” with a number of these influencers.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that Russia remained open for any dialogue on Ukraine, including with the participation of mediators, as long as it achieved its goals.

On June 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to build a new architecture that would take into account the concerns of all. He also listed conditions for peace talks with Ukraine. Among them are the withdrawal of the Ukrainian armed forces from Donbass and Novorossiya and Kiev’s pledge not to join NATO. Ukraine should also remain neutral and commit to having no nuclear weapons, while all Western sanctions against Russia should be removed. Putin pointed out that if Ukraine and the West rejected these conditions, they could change in the future. Kiev rejected the Russian peace plan.

Zelensky says Russia expected to attend second Ukraine conference

President Volodymyr Zelensky

Three preliminary meetings will be held ahead of the conference, Zelensky told reporters in Kiev. According to him, the first meeting, to be convened sometime in late summer in Qatar, will be focused on energy security, while the second one, to be held in August in Turkiye, will be dedicated to the free navigation in the Black Sea. The third one, to be held in September in Canada, will be a platform to discuss prisoner exchange with Russia, the Ukrainian president said.

“After these three points, if they work out, a plan for the implementation of all points will be completed. I set the task so that in November, we will have a drawn-up plan … Everything will be ready for the second summit … We will be ready to hold the second summit as soon as possible, and I believe that Russian representatives should be present at the second summit,” Zelensky added.

The US has consulted with Ukraine on inviting Russia to the second Ukraine summit and will back Kiev’s decision on the matter, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday.

“That’s something that we discussed with them but as we said before any decisions around diplomatic negotiations are decisions that Ukraine has to make,” Miller continued, adding, “It’s for Ukraine to decide when and how and in what shape to undertake diplomatic negotiations. As their partner, as their backer, we will support them if that’s the path that they choose to take.”

Switzerland hosted a high-level conference on Ukraine at the Burgenstock resort outside of Lucerne from June 15-16. Russia did not receive an invitation. The Russian officials have noted that they would skip the event in any case.

The Kremlin announced Tuesday Russia first needs to understand what Zelensky means when he says “peace summit” before accepting any invitation to talks.

“The first peace summit was not a peace summit at all. So perhaps it is necessary to first understand what he means,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Zvezda news outlet, responding to Zelensky’s comments.

Everywhere in Gaza is ‘a potential killing zone’: UN head

Gaza War

“The extreme level of fighting and devastation in Gaza is incomprehensible and inexcusable…Everywhere is a potential killing zone,” Guterres said on X.

It is high time for the parties to the conflict to show the political courage and political will to finally reach a deal, he added.

Separately, Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric stressed the UN is calling on all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and to take constant care to “spare civilians and civilian objects”.

“I can further tell you that we and our humanitarian partners continue to assist families who are being displaced from northern Gaza to areas in the south,” he told the reporters.

Dujarric highlighted that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that with each new evacuation directive, families in Gaza are being forced to make impossible choices: Stay amid active hostilities or flee to areas with little space or services.

“There is no safe place in Gaza. Not shelters, not hospitals, and not the so-called humanitarian zones,” he stated.

Israel, flouting a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7 attack last year by the Palestinian group Hamas.

Nearly 38,700 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and more than 89,000 injured, according to local health authorities.

More than nine months into the Israeli onslaught, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Assad says will only meet Erdogan if ‘core’ issues addressed

Bashar Assad

“The problem is not the meeting, but its content,” a video clip released by the presidency showed Assad telling reporters in Damascus.

Turkey severed ties with Syria in 2011 after the outbreak of the Syrian war, in which it supported rebels looking to oust Assad. The Syrian leader views the rebels as terrorists.

Ankara also established a “safe zone” in northern Syria where Turkish forces are now stationed, and it has carried out several cross-border military operations against militants it says threaten Turkey’s national security.

Erdogan said earlier in July he would extend an invitation to Assad “any time” for possible talks to restore relations.

“What is the basis for the meeting? Would it be ending the reasons for the problem, which are supporting terrorism and withdrawing from Syrian lands?… This is the core of the problem.”

“If there were no discussion about the core of (the problem), what would such a meeting mean?”

Assad added that he would respond positively to any initiative aimed at improving bilateral ties but that the basis for such talks must be set first.

Millions in Iran mark Ashura, mourn Imam Hussein’s martyrdom

Muharram Imam Hussein

Iranians commemorate the tragic events of Ashura, the culmination of the ten-day procession, with elegies, beating their chests as a sign of grief, and Tazieh passion play which re-enacts the battle in Karbala.

Holy shrines and religious centers in the country, including Imam Reza’s holy shrine in northeastern city of Mashhad and Hazrat Fatemeh Masumeh’s shrine in Qom, are densely packed with mourners from all across Iran.

Mourning ceremonies are being held in all Iranian cities, towns and villages marking the high-profile event.

They also hand out votive food and drinks, called Nazri, to the mourners and the needy.

Imam Hussein and 72 of his companions were martyred on the 10th day of the first Islamic month of Muharram in 680 AD in Karbala, southern Iraq, in a battle against the much larger army of the then ruler Yazid I.

Shias in Iran and other parts of the world have kept the rituals alive for centuries to relay Imam Hussein’s message of courage and fight against oppression, injustice, and tyranny to the next generations.

EU puts sanctions on far-right Israelis over rights abuses against Palestinians

Israeli Settlers

It announced in a statement that their violations include “abuse of the right of everyone to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental integrity, the right to property, the right to private and family life, to freedom of religion or belief and the right to education”.

The bloc sanctioned Baruch Marzel for “openly calling for an ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians” and targeted Ben-Zion “Bentzi” Gopstein, the founder and leader of the far-right Lehava organisation, along with Isaschar Manne, founder of the illegal outpost “Manne Farm” in the South Hebron Hills.

Gopstein is a close confidant of far-right Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Israeli settler Moshe Sharvit and his “Moshe’s Farm” in the Jordan Valley are also on the list after attacks on Palestinian farmers and shepherds were launched from the site. The bloc listed Zvi Bar Yosef and his “Zvi’s Farm” in the occupied territories as well.

Tensions have been high across the occupied West Bank since Israel launched a deadly military offensive against the Gaza Strip, which has killed nearly 38,600 victims since Oct. 7 last year following a Hamas attack.

At least 574 Palestinians, including at least 136 children, have since been killed and nearly 5,350 others injured by Israeli army fire in the occupied territory, according to the Health Ministry.

Iranian acting FM meets UNGA president, talks Palestine

Iranian acting FM meets UNGA president, talks Palestine

The meeting was held on Monday on the sidelines of Bagheri’s trip to New York to to take part in UN Security Council meetings on Palestine and multilateralism.

During the meeting, the General Assembly president hailed Iran’s constructive role in the region, especially in establishing stability and security through expansion of ties with the neighboring and regional countries.

For his part, the Iranian caretaker foreign minister highlighted the latest developments in Palestine and Gaza and the Zionist regime’s crimes.

Bagheri praised the General Assembly and its president for their resolutions and constructive measures in support of Palestine aimed at stopping the onslaught and genocide in Gaza.

The Iranian diplomat demanded greater effective efforts to stop the Zionist regime’s attacks against the people in Gaza as well as the crimes and genocide against the Gazans.

He further shed light on Iran’s cooperation with international organizations and thanked the General Assembly for its efforts to confront unilateral sanctions.

Meanwhile, Francis stressed that measures against unilateralism should continue and expressed hope that the move would bear fruit.

Iran’s Pezeshkian: My administration will continue supporting Palestinians

Iran Pro-Palestinian Rally

Pezeshkian made those remarks in a telephone conversation with Hamas leader Ismaiyl Haniyah who initiated the phone call.

He said this support is inspired by Islamic, humane and ethical teachings as well as the guidelines of founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini and leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

Pezeshkian condemned the latest crimes by the Zionist regime in Gaza and offered condolences to the Palestinians over the killing of large numbers of people.

He noted that the continuation of the atrocities shows that the Zionist regime is bent on killing Palestinians with the aim of crushing their spirit of resistance.

Pezeshkian however said that Israeli will not succeed in achieving that goal.

The Iranian president-elect stressed that the Palestinian issue will be a top priority for his administration, adding that he will use all diplomatic and political leverages to bring an end to the war on Gaza in cooperation with neighboring countries.

He said he believes that only the Palestinian people can decide the future of Gaza under a purely Palestinian deal and that without taking this into consideration, any initiative or project will be doomed to failure.

Hamas leader Ismaiyl Haniyah for his part  outlined the latest situation in Gaza, saying more than 9 months have passed since Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, which he described as one of the greatest battles of the Palestinian people for the liberation of their land. “The Zionist regime and its supporters have committed the most heinous and terrifying crimes and massacres during the period”, he said.

The Hamas header also pointed to the massacre committed by the Zionist regime in Khan Yunis on Saturday, saying every time the Zionists have committed such atrocities, they justify their crime by saying they seek to martyr the main commanders of Hamas, but these claims are meant to mislead the world public opinion and is completely false.

Trump assassination attempt reflects ‘suicidal state’ of American democracy: Russia

Donald Trump

The Kremlin has repeatedly been at the center of allegations and strong evidence that it carried out assassination attempts against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s political opponents or challengers.

“Moscow does not think that the attempt to eliminate the politician was organized by the current government. However, the atmosphere created around Trump provoked the attack,” read a statement from the Kremlin pool news group posted on the social platform X.

The statement further said that Putin does not plan to call Trump.

The FBI says early evidence points to a lone shooter carrying out the attack on Trump at a Saturday rally in Pennsylvania, though investigations are ongoing over whether the shooter had any other connections that may pose a threat to the former president. Trump sustained minor injuries in the shooting; a rallygoer was killed and two others critically wounded.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated the assassination attempt “is a reflection of American democracy ‘brought to a suicidal state’ by liberalism”.

The Kremlin often seeks to use turmoil or violence in the U.S. as demonstrating the failures of American democracy in its domestic and global public influence campaigns, particularly among countries that straddle relations between Moscow and Washington.

The Kremlin pushes these narratives in attempts to break down international support for Washington, and counter U.S. efforts to rally an international coalition backing Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia.

But the Russian government under Putin has been accused of numerous assassinations and assassination attempts against perceived political enemies and oppression of these individuals through unjust jailing.

Putin was widely condemned for the death in a Russian jail of top political opponent Alexei Navalny in February, who had survived a poisoning in August 2020.

Other high profile deaths include Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the private military group Wagner, who was killed in August when his plane exploded and fell from the sky, occurring two months after he launched a failed military coup against the Kremlin.

In 2018, Russia was blamed for the poisoning of former Russian intelligence official, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter Yulia, in the U.K. town of Salisbury.

China says ready to work with new Iranian government

Masoud Pezeshkian

China appreciates the remarks made by Pezeshkian on China-Iran relations and stands ready to work with the new government to promote the steady and long-term development of bilateral relations, Lin said on Monday.

In an article published on Saturday in Iran’s Tehran Times, Pezeshkian said Iran cherishes its traditional friendship with China and looks forward “to collaborating more extensively with Beijing as we advance towards a new global order”.

When asked to comment on Pezeshkian’s remarks at a daily press briefing, the spokesperson stated China and Iran enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges, and the bilateral relations have maintained sound and steady development since the establishment of diplomatic ties more than half a century ago.

In the face of complex regional and international situations, China and Iran have always supported each other and worked together to consolidate strategic mutual trust, steadily promoted exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and maintained sound communication and coordination on regional and international affairs, Lin added.

“This has not only benefited the Chinese and Iranian people, but also contributed to regional and world peace and stability.”

“China attaches great importance to the development of China-Iran relations and stands ready to work with the new government to promote the steady and long-term development of China-Iran comprehensive strategic partnership,” he continued.
