Israeli strikes kill 16 in central Syria

Israel Fighter Jet

“The number of martyrs resulting from the Israeli aggression on a number of sites in the vicinity of Masyaf has risen to 16 martyrs and 36 wounded including six critically,” official news agency SANA reported on Monday citing a medical source.

The attack on Sunday also sparked a fire and caused material damage near the city of Masyaf, west of Hama, according to SANA, Syria’s official news agency.

An unidentified security official told SANA that Israel launched an “aerial aggression” from Lebanese airspace against several Syrian military instalments. The source added that Syrian air defences confronted and shot down some of the missiles.

Israeli jets have launched attacks against Syria from Lebanon, likely to avoid Syrian airspace – where multiple regional and international forces, including those of Russia and the United States – operate.

The director of the public hospital in Masyaf said the casualties were civilians, SANA reported.

Throughout Syria’s 13-year war, Israel has regularly carried out air raids in the country – mostly targeting Iran-linked sites. But the Israeli military does not confirm or comment on its operations in Syria.

Sunday’s attack comes amid growing regional tensions, with Iranian officials still pledging to respond to the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July.

Iran, which maintains a military presence in Syria, had promised “harsh punishment” for Israel over the killing, but no Iranian attack has materialised more than 40 days after the assassination.

Iran launched a direct attack on Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles in April in response to the Israeli bombing of an Iranian diplomatic facility in Damascus.

Israeli and US air defences in the region helped shoot down most of the projectiles, minimising the damage of the attack.

Separately, Hezbollah carried out its own attack against Israel on August 25, responding to the killing of one of its top commanders in an Israeli air raid in Beirut which also killed several civilians.

Israel had claimed that it thwarted the operation with a preemptive attack, but the Iran-allied Lebanese group stressed it successfully hit an Israeli military intelligence site near Tel Aviv.

Cross-border hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel have continued on a near-daily basis. Hezbollah announced it is targeting military sites in northern Israel and Syria’s occupied Golan Heights in support of Palestinians in Gaza, where the ongoing Israeli offensive has killed more than 40,900 people.

The Lebanese group has promised to continue its military operations until the war on Gaza ends, while Israeli officials have promised to push Hezbollah off the border, including by all-out war if necessary.

Thousands rally in Pakistan to demand former PM Imran Khan’s release

Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party organised the rally in Islamabad on Sunday, marking its first show of strength since the disputed national and regional elections in February.

Images and videos posted on the social media platform X showed Khan’s supporters marching towards the capital from various parts of the country.

“We will not rest until Khan is released from jail,” said Khan’s close aide Hammad Azhar in the opening speech that set the tone of the rally.

Khan is the only person who can save this country from the “clutches of corrupt and incompetent politicians”, said Salman Akram Raja, a prominent lawyer and PTI leader from Lahore.

The Islamabad administration had blocked key entry points into the city, with shipping containers and riot police deployed to prevent possible unrest. Social media videos showed dozens of PTI activists successfully pushing away containers to clear the way at one of the entry points.

“It was very difficult to reach the rally. All roads had been blocked. But we are determined. If there is a call from Imran Khan to protest and we don’t come, that’s not possible. We are with him till our last breath,” Robina Ghafoor, a PTI supporter, told Al Jazeera.

PTI announced the authorities were harassing workers to suppress attendance at the rally. Visuals aired on local broadcaster Samaa News showed enraged attendees throwing rocks at riot police, who also hurled tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, stated it was the first time since Khan’s arrest a year ago that the PTI was allowed by a Pakistani court to hold a rally on the outskirts of Islamabad.

“But the authorities have made rules along the routes by placing containers, making it difficult for people to reach the venue,” he added.

A spokesman for the Islamabad police, in a statement, in turn accused the protesters of pelting police personnel with stones, injuring many of them, including a senior official.

Khan, a former cricket star, was ousted from office through a no-trust vote in April 2022.

He has been in jail since August 2023 and is facing trial for allegedly inciting violence on May 9 of that year – the day when his supporters went on a rampage and attacked military installations.

An unprecedented arrest and subsequent court martial of a former spy chief, who is widely believed to have been close to Khan when he was prime minister, also complicated his case.

Khan denies the allegations. All of his convictions have been either suspended or overturned in recent months.

Moreover, in July, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced in a press conference in Islamabad that the government would ban Khan’s PTI party, citing accusations of inciting violent protests last year and leaking classified information.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan called the attempt to ban PTI “an enormous blow to democratic norms” and said it “reeks of political desperation”.

A United Nations panel of rights experts also found in July that Khan’s detention “had no legal basis and appears to have been intended to disqualify him from running for political office”.

France, the host of the games, finished in the 8th place with a total of 75 medals, 19 gold, 28 silver, and 28 bronze.

China won 1st place with 220 medals, Britain came 2nd with 124, and the US made 3rd place with 105 medals.

Allenby bridge shooter identified as Jordanian citizen

Israeli media identified the shooter as Maher Dhiab Hussein al-Jazi, 39, from the southern Jordanian town of Udrah in Maan governorate, a town that supplied troops to fight in the 1948 Battle of Jerusalem.

Jazi is a descendant of Maher al-Jazi, the commander of the Jordanian army in the 1968 “Karameh” battle between Israeli troops and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) and Jordanian armed forces.

The Israeli military said Jazi “approached the area in a truck from Jordan, exited the truck, and opened fire at the Israeli security forces operating at the bridge” before he was shot dead.

Three Israelis were pronounced dead at the scene after a military medical team had performed resuscitation efforts, the Israeli military added.

The Israeli manager of the crossing said the three security guards, identified by Israeli media as Yohanan Shchori, Yuri Birnbaum and Adrian Marcelo Podzamczer, were shot at close range by the driver crossing from Jordan.

The shooting took place near an Israel-controlled commercial cargo area, where Jordanian trucks offload cargo entering the West Bank from the kingdom.

Jordan has closed the Allenby Bridge crossing, also known to Palestinians as al-Karamah Bridge, until further notice as authorities investigate the incident, the interior ministry announced.

Israel also closed all three of its land border crossings with Jordan.

Thousands of Jordanians marched on Sunday evening from Al-Husseini Mosque in the old city of Amman to participate in a “martyr’s procession” following the Karameh crossing operation carried out by Jazi.

A large number of Jordanians attended the march, although activists reported that security forces prevented the marchers from bringing in a car equipped with loudspeakers.

“We are surrounded by a murderous ideology led by Iran’s axis of evil,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the start of a cabinet meeting following the incident.

“In recent days, abhorrent terrorists murdered six of our hostages and three Israel Police officers in cold blood. The murderers do not differentiate between us. They want to murder us all, right and left, secular and religious, Jews and non-Jews, until the last one.”

Prior to the shooting, in comments reported by Al Quds, former Jordanian Prime Minister stated: “The enemy who targeted Palestine is clear that it will target Jordan.”

He added that “every Arab or Muslim, civilian or ruler” who does not show solidarity with Palestinians “is a traitor to his country, to the Arab nation and to his religion”.

Hamas said the attack was a “normal response” to Israeli “crimes”.

A Jordanian border official told Reuters at least two dozen Jordanian truck drivers in the offloading area have been detained by Israel’s military for interrogation.

The crossing, which lies north of the Dead Sea, is the only international entry point for Palestinians from the West Bank that bypasses Israel. It is operated by private security guards and Israeli security forces stationed there.

The attack comes amid mounting tensions between Israel and Jordan over fears of the mass expulsion of Palestinians to the kingdom.

Last month, Jordanian King Abdullah II said that Jordan will “not accept having the region’s future held hostage to the policies of the extremist Israeli government”.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi denounced Israel as a “rogue state,” warning that the Israeli push for the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza could spark a regional conflict.

Meanwhile, according to Israeli reports, Israel’s longest and traditionally most peaceful border is increasingly becoming a source of concern for Israeli authorities.

In August, report in Maariv claimed that in recent months, over 40,000 people breached the border with Jordan into the West Bank.

Following the report, Yitzhak Wasserlauf, the Israeli minister for the Negev and Galilee, called for a plenary session of the government to discuss what he called “mass infiltration from Jordan” that presents “a real threat to the integrity of the state of Israel”.

“The open borders are used as a channel for smuggling weapons, drugs and dangerous materials, and allow our enemies to infiltrate our territory,” Wasserlauf added.

Armenia vows to maintain territorial connection with Iran amid corridor dispute

He emphasized Armenia’s opposition to any unblocking efforts based on the concept of a corridor.

In a meeting with Mehdi Sobhani, Iran’s Ambassador to Armenia, Grigoryan thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for supporting Armenia’s territorial integrity and the inviolability of international borders.

He highlighted that the border between Armenia and Iran symbolizes peace, friendship, and coexistence.

Grigoryan also reaffirmed that any unblocking within Armenian territory would remain under the control of Armenia’s national institutions and sovereignty, rejecting any corridor-based approach.

Russia has recently sided with the Azerbaijan Republic to launch the Zangezur corridor, linking the republic to its enclave in Nakhchivan at the cost of cutting off Iran’s direct access to Armenia.

Iran’s stance, reiterated during meetings with Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, stresses the unchangeability of international borders and opposes any geopolitical shifts.

The connection between Tehran and Yerevan is viewed by Iran as a vital geopolitical advantage, providing access to Georgia, the Black Sea, and Europe.

Iran has firmly stated that it will not tolerate any disruption to this strategic linkage, regardless of regional developments or internal changes in other countries.

Brother: Iranian political activist Abdollah Momeni released after Supreme Court overturns ruling

Evin Prison

In an interview with Shargh Daily, Fazlollah Momeni, Abdollah’s brother, confirmed the news of his release, explaining the legal developments that led to it.

According to Fazlollah, the charge against Abdollah carried a sentence of six months to one year in prison. However, the initial court failed to justify the maximum sentence imposed on him.

Following an appeal, the Supreme Court annulled the ruling and referred the case to another court of equal standing.

The brother said: “Unfortunately, the second court did not comply with the Supreme Court’s decision, prompting a further appeal.”

He went on to say: “This time, the case was sent to a third court, which upheld the Supreme Court’s view and issued a ruling for his release, considering the time he had already served.”

He added that the case is now officially closed.

Fmr. Iranian lawmaker raps declared ballistic missile sales to Russia

Iran Missile

He warned that Iranian officials are turning the country into a pawn in a war where Russian President Putin will not emerge victorious.

Falahatpisheh added that tensions between Iran and the US will persist until Putin finds a way out of the Ukraine conflict.

His remarks follow a statement by Fada Hossein Maleki, a member of Parliament, who claimed that Iran profits from selling arms to Russia and circumventing sanctions through their partnership.

Maleki stated, “Europe sells weapons to Ukraine, and NATO is involved. Why shouldn’t we support our ally by providing missiles and drones to Russia?”

The developments came after the Iranian UN Mission in New York released a statement in response to reports suggesting that Tehran had delivered short-range ballistic missiles to Moscow.

The statement reads: “Iran’s position vis-à-vis the Ukraine conflict remains unchanged. Iran considers the provision of military assistance to the parties engaged in the conflict—which leads to increased human casualties, destruction of infrastructure, and a distancing from ceasefire negotiations—to be inhumane. Thus, not only does Iran abstain from engaging in such actions itself, but it also calls upon other countries to cease the supply of weapons to the sides involved in the conflict.”

Meanwhile, the principlist Kayhan newspaper defended Russia as a crucial ally and accused reformist critics of trying to damage Iran-Russia relations, despite the failure of the Iran nuclear deal.

The paper warned against creating unnecessary challenges with non-Western powers.

Iranian powerlifter sets records, grabs gold at 2024 Paralympics

Gharibshahi received his gold medal on the last day of the Paralympic Games after breaking the record twice.

This victory adds to Gharibshahi’s impressive career, which includes four world championship titles and one Asian championship title.

The Mongolian and Mexican powerlifters secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Gharibshahi’s gold medal marks the seventh gold for Iranian athletes at the Paris Paralympic Games, which took place from August 28 to September 8.
