Plight of Palestinians in northern Gaza “unbearable”: UN chief

Gaza War

The plight of Palestinian civilians trapped in North Gaza is unbearable, Guterres’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.

Israel, vowing to stop Hamas fighters from regrouping in the north of the Palestinian territory, has launched a major air and ground assault on October 6 and ordered residents to flee South, while no food or clear water arriving in the region.

The UN spokesperson stated that according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, hundreds of people have been killed in recent weeks and tens of thousands were forced to flee.

The Secretary-General is shocked by the harrowing levels of death, injury and destruction in the north, with civilians trapped under rubble, the sick and wounded going without life-saving health care, and families lacking food and shelter”, Dujarric added.

Israeli authorities are continuing to deny attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need, Dujarric stressed, “with few exceptions, putting countless lives in peril”.

European Union foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell has also issued a statement underscoring what he called “the urgent need to respect” international humanitarian law in the besieged enclave

“By signing the Geneva Conventions, signatories have a legal responsibility to ensure adherence to international law by all parties involved. It is our duty to protect civilians and human rights, and it is high time to act on it,” he said.

“The too little information coming out from North Gaza still attests to a catastrophic level of killing, destruction and starvation, in addition to forced displacements of civilians while an entire population is under bombings, siege and risk of starvation, as well as being forced to choose between displacement or death,” he added.

The Israeli army has intensified its assault in northern Gaza amid a suffocating siege that has left tens of thousands of people without food and water.

The aggression, which began in early October, is the latest episode in Israel’s brutal offensive that has killed nearly 43,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured more than 100,000 since last October following an attack by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.

The Israeli onslaught has displaced nearly the entire population of the territory amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.

Israel army killed over 1,000 Palestinians in northern Gaza in 3 weeks: Report

Gaza War

Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesman for Palestinian Civil Defense, said in a video shared on social media that the Israeli army has killed over 1,000 Palestinians during its three-week-long military offensives in northern Gaza, which are still ongoing.

“More than 100,000 Palestinians in the areas of Jabalia, Beit Hanoun, and Beit Lahia are suffering from an Israeli siege and bombardment, while the other half of the population, which numbered around 200,000, has been forcibly displaced towards Gaza City, the closest governorate to the north,” Bassal told Anadolu.

He continued: “The Israeli army is killing anyone who tries to provide aid to the Palestinians trapped in the northern Gaza Strip, who are suffering from a lack of water, medicine, and food.”

“The Israeli occupation is practicing a policy of ethnic cleansing in northern Gaza amid international silence,” Bassal lamented.

He urged international and humanitarian organizations “to work immediately and urgently to save the Palestinians in northern Gaza.”

The Israeli army has continued a devastating offensive on the Gaza Strip since a Hamas attack last year, despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire.

Nearly 43,000 people have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 100,000 others injured, according to local health authorities.

The Israeli onslaught has displaced almost the territory’s entire population amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.

38,000 illegal Afghan migrants expelled from Iran’s Kerman province

Afghan Refugee in Iran

In a meeting with officials of the province, General Nasser Farshid emphasized the need for cooperation from local businesses to prevent the employment of illegal foreign nationals.

Kerman is among the hardest-hit provinces in Iran, facing significant challenges with illegal immigration from neighboring Afghanistan, which has led to population imbalances and increased unemployment.

While Iran has been praised for its inclusive policies, such as allowing Afghan children to attend school regardless of their documentation status, it has also faced criticism for its leniency towards undocumented immigrants.

The recent expulsions are part of the ongoing efforts to meet the target set by the government to repatriate 2 million illegal migrants before the Iranian year ends on March 20.

Earlier this month, General Ahmadreza Radan, the commander of Iran’s Law Enforcement Force, announced that since the initiation of the plan to expel illegal foreign nationals, there has been an increase in both voluntary surrenders and arrests of undocumented migrants.

The number of illegal immigrants in Iran is unofficially estimated to be around 10 million, with many seeking better economic opportunities or fleeing conflict in their home country, especially since in the 2021 takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban.

X suspends Hebrew account of Iran’s Leader

Ayatollah Khamenei

The account was suspended early Monday with a note saying, “X suspends accounts which violate the Rules,” without explaining further on the nature of violation.

The Leader’s account had opened Sunday with a message in Hebrew reading, “In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful,” as a sign of Islamic greeting.

Following Ayatollah Khamenei’s speech in Tehran on Sunday, KHAMENEI.IR media posted a second post in Hebrew from the Leader on X, formerly Twitter, regarding the recent Israeli strikes on Iran’s military sites on early Saturday, which spurred the media platform to suspend the account.

The message read, “The Zionist regime made a mistake and miscalculated regarding Iran. We will show them the power, capability, innovation, and will of the Iranian nation.”

X, owned by Elon Musk, has gained notoriety for suppressing or removing altogether pro-Palestine content since the Israeli regime unleashed its relentless onslaught on Palestine in October 2023.

Back in February, Meta removed Facebook and Instagram accounts on behalf of the Leader over his support of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas after its unprecedented operation against Israel on October 7, 2023.

Pezeshkian says Iran does not seek war with Israel but vows “an appropriate response”

Pezeshkian Aref

“We do not seek war, but we will defend the rights of the people and the nation, and we will give an appropriate response to the Zionist entity’s aggression,” President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday.

The Iranian president warned tensions would escalate if Israel “continues its aggression and crimes” and accused the United States of “provoking the regime into committing these crimes”.

On Saturday, the Iranian Air Defense Forces said in a statement that the country’s integrated air defense system successfully intercepted and countered the Israeli strikes targeting military locations in Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam provinces.

The attacks caused limited damage in some locations and the dimensions of the incident are under investigation, the statement added.

The Iranian Army also announced that four of its servicemen had been martyred in the raids.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has also condemned the Israeli assault as a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, reiterating the country’s right to defend itself against foreign acts of aggression.

IRGC: Four killed, four detained in connection with Iran’s Taftan terrorist attack

Iran Police

Following the “terrorist” incident on Saturday in the southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, which led to the killing of 10 Iranian law enforcement forces, the operational and intelligence units of the Quds Base of the IRGC’s Ground Force, in cooperation with the provincial intelligence and police forces, managed to identify the hideout of the “terrorists” and attack them using combat drones, said the report.

It added that during the operation, four “terrorists” were killed, four others were arrested, and several sustained injuries, while noting that a number of them managed to escape.

According to the report, a manhunt has been launched to arrest the rest of the “terrorists”.

The Jaish al-adl group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Talks on Israeli hostages, Gaza ceasefire resumed in Qatar: Source

Israel Hostages

Top negotiators from the United States, Israel and Qatar were slated to meet in Doha on Sunday to discuss efforts to reach an agreement, CNN reported on Thursday.

This is the first round of high-level talks in more than two months. US officials have argued for renewed momentum following Israel’s killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

Earlier Sunday, Egypt publicly proposed a two-day ceasefire deal in which four Israeli hostages in Gaza would be exchanged for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.

The proposal was announced by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at a news conference Sunday. Sisi did not specify the number of Palestinian prisoners that would potentially be released.

Under the proposal, if the two-day ceasefire held, the two sides would then have 10 days to negotiate a permanent ceasefire to get desperately needed humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave, Sisi stated.

Officials in Gaza say the Israeli military has not been allowing the small amount of aid that does reach the enclave to be distributed in parts of northern Gaza, where it is carrying out renewed military operations.

Dozens of hostages taken from Israel during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks are still being held in Gaza. There are 101 hostages still held in the blockaded strip, Israeli authorities say, but as many as one-third of them are thought to be dead.

Israel has continued its military onslaught on Gaza following an attack by Hamas last October, despite a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire.

Nearly 43,000 victims have since been killed, mostly women and children, and more than 100,000 injured, according to local health authorities.

The Israeli offensive has displaced almost the entire population of the territory amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.

Mediation efforts to reach a Gaza ceasefire and prisoner swap agreement between Israel and Hamas have failed over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to halt the war.

As of April, more than 9,500 Palestinians were being held in Israeli prisons, including more than 3,500 without charges, according to Addameer Prisoner’s Support and Human Rights Association, a Palestinian NGO. That figure doesn’t include detainees from Gaza, the group added.

Palestinians ‘starving to death’ in northern Gaza amid Israeli siege

Gaza War

An Oxfam official told Al Jazeera on Sunday Israel is using starvation as a weapon in its genocide against the Palestinians and that the United Kingdom-based NGO was unable to reach people in the north because of Israel’s ongoing bombing campaign.

Mahmoud Alsaqqa, who is Oxfam’s food security and livelihood lead in Gaza, warned that some Palestinians are “starving to death” from hunger in northern Gaza and more people will die in the coming days.

“There is nothing. You are talking about tens of days that they are not receiving any supplies,” he said, adding that most Palestinians in the area rely on aid supplies.

Aid agencies say about 96 percent of Gaza’s population is facing high levels of food shortages. According to UNICEF, nine out of 10 children lack the nutrition they need for growth and development. At least 37 children have died of malnutrition or dehydration in a year of war.

The United Nations says Israel has blocked the entry of 83 percent of food aid into the Strip since the war began. It added about 50,000 children below the age of five need urgent treatment for malnutrition by the end of the year.

On Sunday United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire, for the release of hostages and “accountability for crimes under international law”.

“The devastation and deprivation resulting from Israel’s military operations in North Gaza are making the conditions of life untenable for the Palestinian population there,” he said on X, adding, “This conflict continues to be waged with little regard for the requirements of international humanitarian law.”

The Oxfam warning came as Israeli soldiers bombed more neighbourhoods in northern Gaza on Sunday and humanitarian officials sounded alarm about the ongoing ground assault by Israeli forces which is forcibly displacing tens of thousands of residents out of the area.

Israel’s strikes on the towns of Jabalia, Beit Hanoon and Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza have so far killed about 800 Palestinians during the ongoing siege, the Ministry of Health in Gaza announced.

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, said on social media platform X that “the entire population of Gaza is at risk of dying in a genocide that has been announced and executed under our watch”.

Albanese was responding to a statement made by UN humanitarian chief Joyce Msuya on Saturday, warning that “the entire population of north Gaza is at risk of dying” under Israel’s siege.

The International Committee of the Red Cross on Saturday noted the ongoing Israeli evacuation orders and restrictions on the entry of essential supplies to the north had left the civilian population in “horrific circumstances”.

“Many civilians are currently unable to move, trapped by fighting, destruction or physical constraint and now lack access to even basic medical care,” it added.

Palestinian health officials say the siege had crippled the healthcare system in northern Gaza and was blocking medical teams from reaching bombed sites.

Israel maintains that its forces have returned to northern Gaza more than a year into the war to root out Hamas fighters who had regrouped there.

Iranian civilian killed in Israel air strike on Iran

A farewell ceremony for the martyr, Allahverdi Rahimpour, was held this Sunday in Tehran.
Rahimpour, originally from West Azerbaijan Province, lived in Nasim Shahr, Tehran Province, where his funeral will take place.

The Iranian Army’s Public Relations Office clarified that the recent attack claimed the lives of four military personnel, and this number has not increased.

The civilian martyr Rahimpour was not an army employee.

The Israeli regime’s assault was conducted against some military sites in the early hours of October 25, in the Iranian provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam.
