IRGC Releases Sailors after US Apology

The IRGC Public Relations in a statement on Wednesday said the sailors were freed following an apology from the US and after technical and operational investigations indicated that the intrusion into Iranian territorial waters was “unintentional”.

It also underlined that the US has pledged to prevent such mistakes in the future.

The seizure took place at 4:30 P.M. local time, Tuesday, when the two American combat vessels, with 10 armed sailors on board, entered Iran’s territorial waters near the island of Farsi.

The IRGC said the captured US troops, including 9 men and a woman, were treated properly, are fully safe and have been transferred to an appropriate location.

The USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier had been drifting out southeast of the Iranian island of Farsi in the international waters when the Iranian forces seized the two boats, while the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle had been also patrolling in the international waters northeast of the island at the time of the seizure, the IRGC added.

Later, US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif about the issue.

Commander: US in new crisis if not for Iran’s goodwill

Were it not for the good intentions of the Iranian commanders, he said, the US was facing yet another crisis now.

The incident showed the vigilance of the Iranian armed forces, the commander noted.

Iran released ten US marines it was holding for crossing into Iranian territorial waters.

IRGC Public Relations Department, in a statement, said that the US navy boats were stopped Tuesday at 4:30 PM (local time) when they entered Iranian territorial waters near Farsi Island in the middle of the Persian Gulf.

IRGC declared that the US navy boats entered Iranian territorial waters illegally.

The US boats lost contact with their central commanding units due to technical problems but were rescued by Iranian forces.

US Sailors Likely to Be Freed: IRGC Navy Commander

The two American vessels that were seized near Iran’s island of Farsi in the Persian Gulf had inadvertently drifted into the country’s waters, Rear Admiral Fadavi said, noting that the captured sailors will be probably released.

“The two US combat vessels had entered into Iran’s territorial waters because of a failure in their navigation systems, and the issue (illegal entry) is being settled,” he explained.

The commander noted that it will not take a long time for receiving the “necessary orders for the final action.”

He also pointed to “good interaction between the military and diplomatic organizations” in Iran, saying a process in underway to address the case.

Earlier in the morning, Rear Admiral Fadavi had touched on the diplomatic contacts about the incident, saying Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has adopted a “firm stance” when US Secretary of State John Kerry made a phone contact with him.

Foreign Minister Zarif has made it clear that the US sailors had entered into Iran’s territorial waters and that the US needs to “make and apology,” the commander had explained.

It came after reports that the top Iranian diplomat has assured Kerry that the US vessels will be allowed to go their way soon.

The Iranian foreign minister told his American counterpart in a telephone conversation that “the US sailors would be allowed to continue their journey promptly”, Reuters had quoted a senior Obama administration official as saying on Tuesday.

10 armed US navy troops -nine men and one woman on board two military vessels- were captured near the Iranian island of Farsi in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday.

Iran: US must apologize over trespassing of its vessels into Iran’s waters

Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, the commander of the IRGC Navy, said on Wednesday that two US Navy crafts carrying 10 Marines had reached three miles into the waters surrounding the Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf, saying the IRGC forces took into custody the crewmembers of the vessels following the act of trespassing.

“From the very beginning, diplomatic contact were established, and we were communicating with Mr. Zarif and he was briefed on the developments,” Fadavi said in reference to Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. The IRGC commander said US Secretary of State John Kerry had also contacted Zarif, asking that the American crewmembers be released.

“Mr. Zarif adopted a strong and firm stance and declared that ‘they (the crew) were in our territorial waters and you must apologize,’” the IRGC commander said, adding, “Any country’s territorial waters are where the presence of vessels should come with prior notification and permission.”

Broken navigation system behind trespassing

Fadavi noted, however, that the trespassing occurred because of technical problems with the navigation systems of the US vessels, and that “they will probably be released.”

“The IRGC Navy will act promptly upon directives from higher ranks regarding the crew,” he said.

US Navy acted unprofessionally

Recounting the process of impounding the two US vessels and taking the US Marines into custody, Fadavi said that following the impounding of the American vessels, “the US Navy and [a nearby] aircraft carrier resorted to unprofessional behavior as well as aerial and seaborne provocations in the area, which were deflected through the IRGC’s timely action.”

The provocations ran counter to Washington’s assertion about the provision of security for the region, he said, adding, “Through IRGC forces’ timely action, calm was restored to the area and it came under our full control.”

“The IRGC Navy has full control over the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” the senior IRGC commander emphasized.

Captured US Navy Troops Being Interrogated: IRGC Spokesman

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Wednesday, General Ramezan Sharif said “the officials will definitely take the necessary measures” if the investigations and interrogation of detainees indicate that the purpose of the intrusion had been “intelligence or irrelevant” activities.

Back on Tuesday, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy seized two US Navy combat vessels that had entered into Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, near the island of Farsi.

General Sharif said the IRGC acted “mightily” after violation of the country’s maritime borders, noting that the US troops “heeded the warnings.”

No encounter took place during the operation, he added, saying the captured Americans were equipped with “technical gear as well as light and semi-heavy weapons.”

Asked about speculations that diplomatic contacts will lead to the prompt release of the US sailors, the general said Iran “shows no tolerance when it comes to the national interests.”

However, he gave an assurance that the sailors will be treated with Islamic kindness, saying he would “neither confirm nor deny” the reports that they will be released immediately.

IRGC Navy Seizes 2 US Navy Vessels in Persian Gulf, Captures 10 Sailors

According to the IRGC Navy Public relations, the seizure took place at 16:30 local time, Tuesday, when the two American combat vessels, with 10 armed sailors on board, entered Iran’s territorial waters near the island of Farsi.

According to the IRGC, the captured US troops, including 9 men and one woman, were treated properly with the Islamic manner, are fully safe and have been transferred to an appropriate location.

The USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier had been patrolling southeast of the Iranian island of Farsi in the international waters when the Iranian forces seized the two boats, while the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle had been also patrolling in the international waters northeast of the island at the time of the seizure, the IRGC added.

Later, US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif about the issue.

The top Iranian diplomat has reportedly assured Kerry that the US vessels will be allowed to go their way soon.

US wants to demote Iran struggles to Saudi level: Basij chief

“They [Americans] intend to replace the main enemy in Iran’s public opinion and downgrade Iran’s struggles from confrontation with the US to confrontation with Saudi Arabia,” Naqdi said on Tuesday.

“The US’s objective is to trigger conflict in the region and engage us with Saudi Arabia. We should not be deceived,” he added.

Naqdi said the US is the root cause of all “acts of mischief” against Iran, adding that Washington is behind Riyadh’s execution of top cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and attacks on the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

“The purpose of Sheikh Nimr’s execution and attacks on the Saudi embassy [in Tehran] was to pave the way for the advancement of the US policies in the region,” he said.

Naqdi noted that the US is doing its utmost to infiltrate Iran, saying that Washington is training terrorists and arming them along Iran’s eastern and western borders.

The general’s remarks came amid growing criticism of Saudi Arabia following the January 2 execution of Nimr, who was a vocal critic of Riyadh’s policies, alongside 46 other people. The execution provoked global popular backlash, including in Iran.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran on January 3 following demonstrations held in front of the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad by angry protesters censuring the Al Saud family for the killing of Nimr.

Some people mounted the walls of the consulate in Mashhad while incendiary devices were hurled at the embassy in Tehran. Some 60 people were detained over the transgression.

Iran condemns Istanbul terrorist blast

At least 10 people were killed and 15 others injured in an explosion which hit central Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet Square at 10:20 a.m. local time.

Jaber Ansari condoled the Turkish government and nation over the deadly incident, sympathizing with the families of the victims.

This terrorist operation once again underlined the priority of collective efforts of all regional countries and the entire world to fight terrorism and extremism and the need for finding a political settlement to regional crises, Jaber Ansari said.

He said that Iran will stand by the Turkish government and nation in fighting terrorism.

US may push Iran to reconsider N-deal: Iran Judiciary chief

“For them to say,‘we have lifted sanctions as regards enrichment, but we can adopt new sanctions for missile activities and the human rights issue’ is not sensible or acceptable,” Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli-Larijani said.

“With such an approach, they would take the Islamic Republic of Iran to the point of a revision on the JCPOA issue,” he said, in reference to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Under the JCPOA reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, the US is obliged to remove sanctions on Tehran.

The US administration, however, said last month it would announce new sanctions against nearly a dozen companies and individuals for their alleged role in developing Iran’s missile program.

While the White House delayed the sanctions announcement, it said the new measures remain on the table.

The talk of the new sanctions came after Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) successfully test-fired its first guided ballistic missile dubbed Emad.

Washington slammed the test, claiming it had violated UN resolutions that ban the testing of missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Iran says the missiles are not designed for that purpose.

Ayatollah Amoli-Larijani said new US threats show “the Americans are not committed to their pledges in practice.”

“Such instances of behavior reflect their internal differences,” he said.

“We ask executive officials to deal with this issue with vigilance and shut the door to deception of domineering governments,” Ayatollah Larijani added.

‘Irrational Saudi attitude’

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Judiciary chief pointed to Saudi Arabia’s “irrational” behavior and activities, which he said, are tarnishing Islam’s image.

He referred to Saudi Arabia’s “inhumane” attacks against Yemen, saying they violate all international principles.

More than 7,500 people have been killed and over 14,000 others injured since the kingdom launched its attacks in late March.

Amoli-Larijani also touched on Riyadh’s decision to sever ties with Iran after assaults on Saudi diplomatic missions in two Iranian cities in reaction to the execution of Sheikh Nimr.

“Our country’s authorities denounced the incident, but Saudis used it as an excuse to attack Iran,” the Iranian Judiciary chief said.
