JCPOA ‘Least Costly Way’ to Meet National Interests: Rouhani

President Rouhani

“JCPOA had adversaries and even now, not only in the US, Europe, and the Middle East, but also certain neighbouring countries that are wrongfully afraid of Iran’s power are regrettably making every effort to undermine the nuclear deal,” President Rouhani said.

He made the remarks during an Iftar banquet on Saturday night, July 2, in a meeting with Iranian officials who had played a part in the realization of Iran nuclear deal.

Therefore, Rouhani added, preserving this national achievement is necessary and we should give no excuse to our enemies for compromising Iranian interests.

The President further stressed the need to avoid unnecessary and ineffective rhetoric, saying, “Shouting out loud will not strengthen our national security and interests. What increases our national power, however, is an actual strengthening of our defence system, advancing policies of Resistance Economy and objectives of the 20-Year Vision Plan, conducting defence research and attracting investment.”

“Raising certain slogans will merely provide an excuse for those seeking to promote Iranophobia and will strengthen their positions,” he added.

Rouhani maintained that Iran’s nuclear issue was brought into spotlight by certain powers as a result of the Iranophobia discourse, saying, “In return, we tried to tell everyone that constructive interaction with Iran will benefit all and that Iran is not a threat and does not seek to obtain nuclear weapons.”

The President further noted the various step-by-step attempts by the country’s enemies before the nuclear deal such as reducing oil revenues, blocking banking activities and increasing financial transactions costs up to 20 per cent, adding “bringing Iran’s case to the Security Council and placing us under Article 40 and 41 of Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations meant that at any moment, the country could come under a military conspiracy from our enemies.”

Rouhani asserted that ‘serious negotiations’ with the other side with a win-win approach was one way to resolve the issue.

“As of now, the nuclear rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran have been established,” Rouhani said.

“Iran is selling UF6 and heavy water and purchase yellow cake in return; at the same time, the costs of imports have declined, banking relations have been facilitated and conditions for investment have been provided.”

Poland Buys 2m Barrels of Iran’s Crude Oil: NIOC Official

Mohsen Qamsari

Qamsari said Poland’s Grupa Lotos has bought two million barrels of Iran’s crude oil in a one-off purchase, adding that the cargo was loaded at Iran’s main oil export terminal Kharg Island last week.

“Signing a long term contract would depend on the two countries’ situation,” he added as cited by Shana news agency.

On June 27, the Atlantas Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), destined for Gdansk, left Iran’s Kharg Island laden with 2 million barrels of crude.

The cargo was the first Iranian crude sold into this part of the Baltic Sea market.

In May, Poland’s deputy energy minister said the country was in talks with Iran over cooperation in the oil and gas sector.

Before sanctions, Iran was exporting about 2.2m barrels per day (bpd). July exports are expected to be around 2.1 million bpd, up about 70 per cent year-on-year.

The sanctions were lifted after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached an agreement on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16.

Renault to Come to Iran with Five New Models

Fardad Daliri, IDRO deputy for industrial investment development, told IRNA on Saturday, July 2, that talks on the issue have been held with two Iranian car producers including Saipa Corporation and Iran Khodro Industrial Group.

France’s Renault Group will produce five new makes of cars in Iran, three in collaboration with Saipa and two with Iran Khodro, Daliri said.

Iranian car manufacturers are to cooperate with Renault to make new models of cars in order to upgrade the domestic products, he added.

After January announcement of ‘Implementation Day’ of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and world powers, the country resumed car cooperation with Asian and European companies, Daliri said.

Renault Group is among top ten car manufacturers in the world.

Iran Ranks 12 in World Dental Science

According to a report by IRNA, as translated by IFP, “Iran has managed to move two steps up and attain the twelfth place in dentistry in the world, outranking Switzerland and Canada”, Saeed Askari, the Secretary of Oral Health Council of Ministry of Health and Education, said.

“Although Iran has not made any progress in overall science production and remained the 16th country for two consecutive years [2014 and 2015], it has managed to claim the 12th rank in the field of dental sciences within the same period of time,” he noted.

“Fortunately, the Islamic Republic of Iran has the first rank in science production in the Middle East by a narrow margin from Turkey; however, in medical and dental sciences, it holds the second rank after Turkey”, Askari added.

Based on Iran’s 20-Year Vision Plan, authorities are required to take practical measures to pave the way for a considerable science growth and achievement of the first rank in medical and dental sciences.

Iranian Journalists Shocked after Receiving Threatening Message

Journalists

“All contact and collaboration with hostile elements based abroad, by mail or other methods of communication, is a crime and will be brought to justice. This text message is the last warning,” the message said.

Iranian media reported that numerous journalists and public figures including women and child rights activists received the text message on Thursday, June 30.

Lawmaker Ali Motahari told ISNA that the message had “created worry among journalists.”

“The intelligence ministry’s cyber-police must find the origin of this SMS and inform the public, and the judiciary must act against those responsible,” he said.

“The Press Supervisory Board is responsible for the media, and other bodies must not interfere.”

Some journalists who received the message said on social media that they would lodge complaints.

According to a report by Vaghaye Ettefaghieh daily, as translated by IFP, the text message was sent after the information of 20 million Iranian mobile phone users were hacked in the same day.

Mohammad Ali Vakili, an Iranian MP who also runs the reformist newspaper Ebtekar, told Vaghaye that the Ministry of Culture should follow up on the issue through the High Council of Cyberspace.

“We should provide minimum mental security and privacy for reporters and media outlets,” he urged.

“The message has been sent either as a personal threat, which is alarming for the media community, or as a security message from the Establishment, which should have been earlier communicated to the Culture Ministry, and thus, has now legal basis.”

Therefore, Vakili added, I advise journalists and those who received the message to calm down and I hope that nothing threatens them.

“The fact that a person can gain access to the privacy of many journalists and intimidate them, even to settle personal scores, is alarming for the country’s security, and should be legally dealt with seriously,” he went on to say.

“Mohsenin plan only applies to those families whose parents [or guardians] are sick or incapable of work and are in desperate need.”

“Sponsors donated 13,710,252,000 rials [nearly $400,000] for orphans and needy children. […] The donation amount has increased 63% compared with the same period last year,” Allahyari went on to say.

“Since the beginning of holy Islamic month of Ramadan, more than 1,800 orphans and needy children have been introduced to new sponsors”.

Smart Phone Penetration in Iran Up 120%

Here is IFP’s translation of a report by Young Journalist Club:

Official statistics suggest that internet penetration in Iran has reached 50% this year. 5,000 people used to have access to the Internet in 1997, but the figure rose to 700-800 in 2001 since dial-up internet technology made its way into the country. In this year, Iranians turned to blogging en masse to mark a sudden surge in Internet usage.

Since 2001, the number of Internet users has grown exponentially to the extent that today, there is a population of 42m users across the country.

Davood Zare’eian, an expert in the areas of communication and media, believes that a renaissance in Internet development is intertwined with the growth of social media.

“Following the release of third and fourth generations of smart phones, we experienced a boom in the growth of social media in the society, for which we urgently need a competent management strategy”, he underlined.

“Communications have inflicted widespread damages on Iranians because we have not been able to pass on the needed skills to our people. The only way out of this is to promote media literacy,” Communication Journal quoted him as saying.

“Developed countries should devote attention to three factors in order to make good use of communication technology: The necessary infrastructure for information technology, the rate of usage, and the extent of user’s acquaintance with the required skills,” he went on to say.

Stampede in Mecca Once Again Wounds Pilgrims

Iran Officially Declares Cancellation of This Year's Hajj Pilgrimage

Here’s IFP’s translation of a report by IRNA:

According to Saudi media, Mecca’s emergency department dispatched a team of rescue workers on an emergency call about a stampede in front of “Dar al-Tawhid” Hotel near Masjid al-Ḥarām [Grand Mosque], where 18 injured pilgrims received outpatient treatment.

Mecca’s Department of Health Affairs added that 4 hospitals have been put on high alert near Masjid al-Ḥarām and 8 rescue teams dispatched to the location.

The night before the accident was Laylat al-Qadr or the Night of Value [the night when the first verses of Holy Quran were revealed]; therefore, more than 750 Sunni pilgrims had gathered in Masjid al-Ḥarām to perform Tarawih prayer [extra prayers performed by Sunni Muslims at night in the Islamic month of Ramadan].

The accident is reminiscent of the deadly stampede in Mina on September 24, 2015, when a crush caused the deaths of thousands of Muslim people visiting the holy site. The pilgrims, including more than 460 Iranians, suffocated or crushed to death, which attest to the inefficiency and lack of foresight of the Saudi government.

Last year’s Hajj killed more than 2,000 pilgrims in the worst disaster to ever strike the annual ritual.

According to figures from foreign officials, at least 2,297 pilgrims died. Saudi Arabia issued a death toll of 769.

The Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages bring millions of Muslims to the holy places in Saudi Arabia every year.

Saudi authorities allege that they are unveiling new safety measures for this year’s Hajj in September.
